#Crystal Cove Shopping Center

Tumblr media
The photo above was taken by our friend Dolly whose idea it was for all of us to scootch our feet close to the fire like this. Our moment around the campfire represents the end of Saturday, our last full day of adventure. The way it started, though, was something completely different from this little moment of community.
So to begin at the beginning...
Yesterday. Was lazy morning day.
Breakfast leftovers for me... and a haircut.
No joke. Kimmer took one look at the shaggy hair dangling down from under my hat over my forehead... and declared it to be hair cutting time.
Did not. See that coming.
As a result of Friday's travels, we're at Moro Campground now, overlooking Crystal Cove, and we're coming to grips with the fact that we don't have a hookup here so...
No power.
As in got no electricity.
So now there are the logistics of recharging our phones and laptops. Which is funny 'cause technically...
We're camping.
What can I say?
Call it the best of both worlds. 😉
Derek's got a solar panel, though, and it's charging a battery we can all tap.
Only our phones, though.
Because if we wanna charge our laptops, well...
That's gonna involve Starbucks.
Before we get to that, though, let's quickly review lazy morning day in which we take roughly four hours to accomplish what we normally get done in under an hour at home.
Yup.
We're taking everything, every minute of the morning in the slowest way possible because we are in no rush. We're not motivated to hit the gas. We can take our time. And we can choose to be distracted by nothing in particular. Sometimes several nothings.
We can take in the scenery. We can fully appreciate the view, the breeze, the sun, the Pacific Ocean, the horizon that travels forever, the sailboats lined up between the horizon and the shore.
And we do. We indulge all that. We allow Time to flow around us until, basically, it's one in the afternoon when, for no particular reason, no agenda to follow, we actually feel inclined to do something.
So finally we drive the mile to that Starbucks at Crystal Cove Shopping Center and camp there, inside, to power up my battery pack, charge up Kimmer's laptop, continue the business planning from the day before that delved into a lot of lessons we learned through professional experience over the years touching on multiple businesses, different leaderships, both good and bad decisions, and both sustainable and unsustainable courses of action.
Around this time, Kimmer also figures out our next day's logistics. I took a crack at it a coupla days earlier to no avail. With her laptop, though, Kimmer hits on something that's largely the reverse of what we've already done... with one addition.
What we're gonna do is... on the morning we leave camp, we're gonna drive straight to the Escape Campervan location in Inglewood to return Big Foot the campervan. After that, we Uber or Lyft to LAX to pick up the rental we'll need for maybe six hours. After that, we'll drive to SNA and check in our four largest bags. Then we drive to Irvine for the afternoon and, at the end of the afternoon, we drive back to SNA, turn in the car. BAM. Done.
By the time we wrap up business planning and travel planning, it's 330 and, after a quick bit of shopping at Trader Joe's, we head back to camp, only then realizing we forgot to pick up the ice we promised Derek.
So back at camp I drop off Kimmer, pick up the boys, and head down the Pacific Coast Highway on our way to Ralph's grocery store to score us some twenty pounds of crushed ice.
The ride down is chatty, believe it or not, covering reddit, acts of congress, q-anon, and learning hacks when your teacher's not making any sense to you. After the ice, we're back at camp around 430 to join Kimmer on a beach walk that involves a bunch of walking and even more taking of photographs. Because hey. There's a lot of nature down there along the shore, on the beach, and at the base of the cliff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Five forty-five we're back at camp to keep an eye on Cookie the Chihuahua whilst Derek drives off to pick up close family friends.
Why?
Because we're gonna do another round of celebrating Kyle's upcoming birthday!
Whooohoooo!!!!!
The close family friends, Don & Dolly, arrive around 630 bearing a home cooked pasta dinner, red wine (for the adults), crackers 'n white fish and, of course, CAKE.
Delicious.
Chocolate.
Cake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have a fantastic time as conversations break out all over the place as day turns into evening turns into night. There's some catching up, right off the bat. There's some news of the day. Some topics about which we're individually passionate. And other random stuff progressing straight through dinner all the way to cake which means it's time for all of us to sing the Happy Birthday song followed by the other Happy Birthday song that goes
Happy happy birthday
From all of us to you
We wish it was our birthday
So we could party too
HEY!!!
The song involves thunderous clapping on the beat and a big finish.
So it really can get quite loud. 😁
After that, we all take chairs around the propane-fueled campfire. We're close enough that our feet are almost touching the fire so Dolly tells us to put our feet up close and she snaps a picture.
This one. Right here...
Tumblr media
Afterward, I'm struck by the thought that, because it is cold outside tonight, we're all better off being closer to the fire together. We're better off sharing stories and opinions and personal history and just stuff. Random stuff. Family stuff. Health stuff. A little past, a lot of present. Even sometimes about the future.
And it's in this space, this tiny community, with human beings connected to each other through family and friendship, it's in this social space, this relational vibe where our pre-celebration ends, where our Saturday comes to its conclusion: around the campfire with well wishes and fare-thee-wells, and a deep conviction that this experience is good for the soul.
As the night comes to a close, fog continues to roll in from the ocean and I wander over to stand on a perch above the shore where I can see the fog's beginning to wrap around all the campfires along the cliff. In a way, instead of obscuring those fires, the fog serves to highlight, contour each family, each group of friends, huddled around their campfires. It places emphasis around all these little groups. These tiny communities.
And the flames that bring them warmth.
😊

Best Beaches of Mexico To Visit in 2023
Are you looking for an unforgettable beach vacation in Mexico next year?
With its pristine white sand, crystal-clear water, and tropical climate, Mexico is home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches.
From secluded coves to bustling party spots, here are some of the best beaches in Mexico to visit in 2023.
Playa Sisal
Located on the Yucatan peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico, this breathtaking beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and other water sports.
As well, Playa Sisal has turquoise waters that are crystal clear and pristine white sand that stretches up to two kilometers along the shoreline. It has numerous reefs that offer excellent spots for scuba diving and fishing.
Basically, the ancient city of Tulum is located just north of Playa Sisal and offers a glimpse into Mayan culture and history through its amazing archaeological sites and structures.
Tips: The best part about Playa Sisal is its incredible seafood. From grilled shrimp to fresh ceviche, you can enjoy mouthwatering meals right by the beach!
Cancun
Cancun is not just any barrier island off the southeast coast of Mexico; it's an absolute paradise packed with rich history and jaw-dropping beauty.
From the moment you step onto its beaches, you'll be entranced by the breathtaking views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea and golden sands that stretch for miles. But there's more to Cancun than just its beaches.
We highly recommend the tranquil and less crowded Playa Chac Mool for families or couples seeking solitude. Meanwhile, Playa Delfines offers the best opportunity to spot playful dolphins in crystal-clear waters.
But that's not all - you can also explore the underwater museum at Isla Mujeres, where you'll be mesmerized by the unique and awe-inspiring sculptures.
Playa Carrizalillo (Puerto Escondido)
Of course, you might want to escape the crowds and find a secluded and serene place to relax. Playa Carrizalillo is the perfect spot for that.
Tucked away in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, this crescent-shaped beach boasts turquoise waters and breathtaking views.
To reach Playa Carrizalillo, you must walk down and then back up around 155 stairs, but the journey is worth it. Once you arrive, you can relax on the soft sands and enjoy the beautiful views.
Tips: Playa Carrizalillo isn't just a beach for regular beachgoers; it's also a popular place for beginners and intermediate surfers to go surfing. Surfboards can be rented from one of the many surf shacks on the beach for 150 MXN per hour. You can rent shortboards, longboards, and bodyboards when you arrive.
Playa del Carmen beaches
Playa del Carmen is a beach town that has gained popularity recently for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history.
As you walk along the palm-lined beaches, you can't help but feel the cool breeze coming from the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The city was once a Mayan fishing village known as Xaman Ha, which means "waters of the North." It was a significant trading center and religious site for the ancient Mayan civilization. Today, you can explore the remnants of this ancient culture by visiting the Mayan ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza.
Tips: The fastest way to travel from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is via ferry, which will take 35 minutes to reach your destination.
Costa Maya
Costa Maya, located on Mexico's east coast, used to be undeveloped until a large pier was built, attracting a lot of beachgoers.
The region maintains a beautiful balance between traditional Mayan identity and modernity, making it a recommended beach for tourists.
Tourists can experience costumed Mayan entertainers, Mayan architecture, luxury shopping, beach clubs, and restaurants.
Divers should go to the underwater wonderland of Banco Chinchorro, and history buffs should check out Dzibanch, Kinich-Na, and Kohunlich, three underrated Mayan ruins in the area.
Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit
Punta Mita is a luxurious paradise located in the Mexican Riviera Nayarit, just a short drive away from Sayulita
What sets Punta Mita apart from other beach destinations in Mexico is the abundance of five-star hotels, luxury vacation rentals, and world-class golf courses.
Whether you prefer modern, minimalist, tropical, or rustic lodging, Punta Mita offers upscale oceanfront views that take your breath away.
Punta Mita Ocean Sports allows you to go sport fishing, kayaking, whale watching, surfing, paddleboarding, sailing, diving, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, and more.
Aside from the beach activities, Punta Mita has a bird sanctuary nearby. You can also explore recreational trails that abound in the landscape.
Playa Balandra (La Paz)
Playa Balandra is an stunning beach in Baja California Sur State, about one hour from La Paz, Mexico. Its crystal clear waters and brilliant white sandy beaches make it a popular spot for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking.
One of the most iconic features that make Playa Balandra unique is the "mushroom rock" on the beach's north side – it's a must-see!
Tips: due to its growing popularity on social media, it's essential to arrive early to secure a spot at the beach. Both the parking lots and the beach itself tend to fill up quickly,
Sayulita
This secluded beach is rarely crowded, so it's a great place to get away from the busyness of Playa Sayulita.
We all know it's also a great spot to catch the sunset, but be sure to have a secure way to get back to town after dark.
Sayulita is a sleepy beach village about 26 miles northwest of Puerto Vallarta, known for its world-class beaches and water activities.
Surfing is a popular activity among locals, with Playa Carricitos being the mecca for experienced surfers and surf schools available for beginners.
Tips: To get to Playa Sayulita, you can take a taxi, rent a car, or book a private transfer from the airport.
La Lancha
Visitors to Playa La Lancha are greeted with an idyllic paradise of white sands and clear waters. It's the ideal spot for an adventure-filled getaway, offering both surfboard rentals and lessons and incredible photography opportunities.
Basically, the waves here are perfect for surfing but can be too strong for swimming. There's even a tree that provides a shady spot for photos.
Those looking to explore further can take a hike down from the highway, but do so with caution - the beach is located near swamps which can be home to crocodiles during certain times of the year.
Tips : Getting there is easy; visitors can take a bus or Uber straight to the OXXO convenience store nearby, park in the lot across the highway, and make their way over on foot.
Wrap Up
Now that you are familiar with some of the best beaches Mexico offers, it's time to start planning your 2023 vacation! Taking a trip to a beach paradise can be just what you need for a mid-year reset.
Whether you want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life or spend some quality time with friends and family in a tropical paradise, these best Mexican beaches will make your journey memorable.

Crystal River CatBoat Adventure Tour with Crystal River Water Sports
Tumblr media
“Shall I bring my big camera?” I asked Mike Engiles, the owner and operator of Crystal River Water Sports as we filled out the paperwork for our CatBoat Adventure Tour. He looked directly at me. “You will get wet.” I had driven through a morning downpour on my way to Crystal River Water Sports, located just behind the Days Inn on US 19 on the north end of Florida’s famous manatee town. Was the weather following me? I wondered. “Are these boats easy to flip?” I’d seen people dump themselves from canoes, kayaks, and river tubes, but Mike assured me these uniquely designed CraigCat compact watercraft were very stable.  CraigCats are top-of-the-line, compact yet comfy powerboats and make the perfect eco-tour craft for Florida’s Nature Coast. Crystal River CatBoat Adventure Tour with Crystal River Water Sports I left the big camera behind, donned a lightweight life vest, and boarded the two-seater CatBoat beside NatureCoaster’s own Diane Bedard. The CatBoat trip we signed up for was a 2.5-hour Adventure Tour. Our guide, Mark, took the bright yellow lead boat and the rest of us boarded the aquamarine mini catamarans.   We were pushed off from the floating boat ramp like launching a kayak. “They’re like go-karts on the water,” Diane told me, taking control of the driving. The drivers were given a lesson in maneuvering around in the lagoon in front of the watersports shop. NatureCoaster Diane Bedard and Crystal River Watersports owner and operator MikeEngiles. Photo by Sally White Boater Safety Education You must be 18 or older and have a Florida Boating Education Certificate or be born before January 1st, 1988, to operate the CraigCats. We were notified of this prior to our arrival and given links to the state-approved boater safety courses in the tour email. The least expensive is $10 and lasts 30 minutes. And once you take the course, your certificate is good for 90 days. This is NOT a captain’s license- that’s a whole other ballgame. If you are a resident, you can obtain a lifetime Boating Safety Education ID Card after taking an FWC-approved course. It costs more but lasts longer. My son had taken the boater safety course along with his hunting safety course via Florida Virtual Schools Outdoor Education Course when he was in high school. It’s free to 12–18-year-olds. It was a class he could do online, counted towards a high school credit, and got him a Boating Safety Education ID Card. Driving the CatBoats The CatBoat is essentially a variation of a mini catamaran with two hulls that look a lot like two surfboards, and a central framework on top. Driving it takes two hands, much like those zero-turn riding lawnmowers. On the side is a throttle that you push forward for forward, neutral, and reverse. There is also a center stick to move the rudder to turn the boat left and right. The seats are really comfortable. It's idle speed and no wake zones throughout King's Bay to provide a safer environment for the manatees. Photo by Sally White. Wildlife in Crystal River Preserve State Park We spotted our first manatee, swimming in the lagoon. It came up for air and then disappeared with a swirl of its tail, beneath the depths. We didn’t want to take a chance of injuring it with our CatBoat’s propeller, so we made sure we gave the manatee plenty of space. We followed Mark and the yellow cat leading the way on the waterway from the lagoon. A neighborhood of houses lines one side of the canal and wild parklands on the other. A no-wake zone, it provided the perfect place to master the mini-cat driving skills and s-curves before reaching the river. We rode under the bridge to the Crystal River Archeological State Park, and entered the Crystal River Preserve State Park lands, spotting our first alligator, who sunbathed in a peaceful little cove. We motored through the canal that divides the Crystal River Preserve State Park from the Crystal River Archeological State Park on the Crystal River CatBoat Tour Adventure. Photo by Sally White. The waterway spilled into two ways. To the right was the Mullet Hole fishing spot in the preserve and their kayak launch point, and to the left was the channel that led to Crystal River. We turned left, taking a scenic ride past limestone ledges and cypress trees that lined the edges of the channel. This waterway runs parallel to the Crystal Cove hiking trail in the preserve. Turtles sunned on logs in the muddy water as we motored past a sailboat moored in another lagoon, safe from the elements. An alligator watched nearby, his body submerged, and only his head showing. Mark pointed out the wildlife along the way, communicating through walkie-talkies that we all had been issued at the start. These lightweight devices hung around our necks on lanyards but required pushing a button to talk back, allowing us to talk without airing our conversations to others on the tour. On the River The trees eventually gave way to a sea of sawgrass lining the channel. In the distance, hammocks of palms rose among the grasses to line the horizon in a scene straight from a Florida Highwayman painting. And finally, we reached Crystal River. The trees ended at a sea of sawgrass at the end of the state park channel. We could see the scenic overlook of the Crystal Cove hiking trail from the water. Photo by Sally White. Crystal River is a town, a waterway, and a state of mind. The spring-fed water glistens under the sunlight, making its 7-mile journey out towards Shell Island and the Gulf of Mexico sparkle. “This is where the fun starts,” our guide’s voice said over the walkie-talkie. “You can go full throttle out here.” He turned left onto the river and picked up speed. We followed, the last in our tour’s CatBoat line, and riding the wake of the others like a tandem jet-ski. These go-kart boats can reach speeds of 25mph!   The fresh-water spray misted us and the boat smoothly cut over the waves like a professional surfer. There was no ‘whomp’ like you get from a motorboat. CraigCats proved to be easy riders. The sun rose higher in the sky. It was destined to be another scorcher of a Florida day, but the breeze and the spray kept us cool. We both had sunscreen on and caps, but should we have needed more sun protection, each boat has a shade canopy as well. Between us, a small cooler with cold water was strapped to the deck, and behind us, a secure lock box was fitted to keep additional belongings. Onto Kings Bay CraigCat boats can run up to 25mph, the perfect speed to zip up the river. Photo by Sally White.  We sped past a trawler and up to the No Wake sign at the entrance to King’s Bay, where our guide waited to explain the next portion of our trip.  The No-Wake zones around Crystal River and throughout Kings Bay protect ecologically sensitive areas and for manatees. We followed the lead boat in an idle past Christmas Island and Pete’s Pier, where Mark gave us a run-down on the story behind the holiday-named island. The former resident of the island didn’t rely on local utilities, because, it was an island, so when the No Name storm swept through, it knocked out all the power in the area. The island lights, run by a generator, were the only lights on around, twinkling like Christmas lights in the night. Pete's Pier and Marina provided a useful waypoint in Kings Bay during our tour up the various waterways in Crystal River. Photo by Sally White. Hunter Springs & Caging the Grass We idled past Hunter Springs where families watched our colorful boat parade from the sandy beach as we curved around the second magnitude spring, one of 30 named springs that feed Kings Bay and Crystal River with its crystal-clear fresh water. Local fifth graders recently aided in planting seagrass in the shallows at the park. Read about it here. The aquatic grass is then caged with circular metal cages which are left in place until the plants establish their roots. Native seagrass provides vital food for manatees, helps water clarity, and provides shelter for the aquatic animals of the river. Save Crystal River partnered with local schools to engage 5th graders in the ecology and restoration of seagrass at Hunter Springs. Photo by Sally White. Just past Hunter Spring, near Jurassic Spring we rounded a small island of trees. Nesting cormorants filled the trees. Other cormorants and anhinga birds dried their wings from their island roosts and watched us idle past. Outside the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge We backtrack to Pete’s Pier, an unmistakable waypoint in the bay, and take another channel under a bridge. This way leads us alongside the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. We reach the entrance into the Three Sister’s Springs, a crystal-clear pool consisting of three spring vents, but closed to boats. Just near the entrance channel into the springs is the famous Idiot’s Delight Spring Basin consisting of the three freshwater main springs that entice the winter gathering for hundreds of manatees. When the gulf water temperatures drop below 64F, manatees must seek warmer water to survive, and they head to the 72F springs. The springs maintain their temperature year-round, but in winter, 72F feels warm. We idled by Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, home to several freshwater springs and the world-famous wintering hole for manatees. Photo by Sally White. These springs around the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge are roped off during the manatee wintering from November to March, depending on the temperatures, but there are no manatees in sight here today. We idle back to Kings Bay, passing kayakers and paddleboarders, and head out of the No Wake zone for some wave-riding down the river. It’s wind, sun, and spray out here, almost like a Jimmy Buffet song. Passing the Chieftain’s Mound at the Crystal River Archeological State Park, the yellow lead CatBoat slows to turn into the channel at the Crystal River Preserve State Park and stops to wait for us all to catch up. Beginning our ride back to the launch point, we keep an eye out for the gators we had seen on the way out, but they have moved on by now. The fallen tree beside the sailboat has become an afternoon turtle haven. Crystal River Watersports CatBoat Tour boats are available for guided tours daily by appointment. Image by Sally White. Mark gives us directions on parking our CatBoats and docks up first. The next boat does a smooth park up the ramp, but both us and the other CatBoat have to try it twice, before doing a perfect slide up the ramp, much like kayaking up a launch. And just in time for lunch as well. Located at 2380 N Suncoast Blvd in Crystal River, (Behind the Days Inn), Crystal River Watersports is one of the area's most established tour operators, with over 20 years of experience. They combine their eco-tours with Florida fun. Read the full article

Yacht Charter vs. Cruise Ship: Which is Right for You? Gary Blonder Weighs In
Welcome to the world of luxury travel! If you're considering a memorable vacation on the open seas, you may find yourself torn between two incredible options: yacht charter or a cruise ship. The decision can be overwhelming, as both offer unique experiences and advantages. To shed some light on this topic, we turn to Gary Blonder, a prominent figure in the yacht industry. With years of experience and his own successful mega yacht charter business in Florida, Blonder is the perfect authority to weigh in on the yacht charter versus cruise ship debate.
The Allure of Yacht Charters
Unparalleled Luxury and Privacy
Imagine cruising through crystal-clear waters, surrounded by opulence and privacy. Yacht charters epitomize luxury, providing an exclusive experience tailored to your desires. From lavish interiors and personalized service to state-of-the-art amenities, every detail is crafted to exceed your expectations. Unlike a cruise ship, where you share communal spaces with hundreds or even thousands of passengers, a yacht charter ensures privacy and intimacy for you and your loved ones.
Customized Itineraries
One of the major advantages of a yacht charter is the ability to create a customized itinerary. Whether you want to explore hidden coves, visit exotic islands, or simply relax in secluded anchorages, the choice is yours. Yacht charters offer unparalleled flexibility, allowing you to design a journey that suits your preferences. With the guidance of experienced captains and crew, you can discover hidden gems and enjoy personalized activities tailored to your interests.
Personalized Service
Blonder emphasizes that personalized service is a key differentiating factor in yacht charters. The dedicated crew members onboard ensure that your every need is catered to, providing a level of attention and care that is unmatched. From gourmet dining prepared by talented chefs to personalized excursions and activities, the crew goes above and beyond to create an unforgettable experience. Every detail is meticulously planned to ensure your journey is nothing short of extraordinary.
The Allure of Cruise Ships
Wide Range of Amenities and Entertainment
Cruise ships are renowned for their vast array of amenities and entertainment options. From sprawling water parks and Broadway-style shows to world-class restaurants and shopping centers, cruise ships offer a plethora of activities to suit every taste. Whether you're seeking relaxation or adventure, there is something for everyone aboard a cruise ship. The sheer variety of onboard facilities ensures that boredom is simply not an option.
Extensive Destinations and Accessibility
Cruise ships often traverse diverse itineraries, providing access to multiple destinations in a single trip. This appeals to travelers who wish to explore a range of places without the hassle of planning individual journeys. With well-established routes and ports of call, cruise ships offer convenience and accessibility. From bustling cities to remote islands, you can embark on an unforgettable voyage that showcases the beauty and diversity of different regions.
All-Inclusive Packages
Cruise ships are known for their all-inclusive packages, which can be appealing to travelers seeking a hassle-free experience. With accommodations, meals, and onboard activities included in the fare, budgeting becomes more straightforward. Additionally, cruise lines often offer various packages and promotions, allowing you to choose options that align with your preferences and budget. This convenience and affordability make cruise ships an attractive choice for many.
Making the Decision
Deciding between a yacht charter and a cruise ship ultimately comes down to your personal preferences, priorities, and the type of experience you seek. Gary Blonder advises that if you value privacy, exclusivity, and the ability to tailor every aspect of your journey, a yacht charter is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a wide range of onboard amenities, entertainment options, and the convenience of visiting multiple destinations, a cruise ship may be more suitable.
Closing out!
In conclusion, whether you opt for a yacht charter or a cruise ship, both choices offer incredible opportunities to indulge in luxurious travel experiences. The decision ultimately hinges on your specific desires, preferences, and the type of adventure you envision. Consider the unparalleled privacy, customized itineraries, and personalized service of a yacht charter or the extensive amenities, diverse destinations, and all-inclusive packages of a cruise ship. Whichever path you choose, may your voyage be filled with unforgettable moments and cherished memories.

It’s worth the trip to this beautiful park with its three miles of Pacific coastline, historic beach houses, and inland chaparral canyons. If you’d rather have a pillow and comfy bed (rather than a campground experience), you can lay your head down at the nearby Newport Beach Marriott Bayview.
The lobby bar and onsite restaurant make it a perfect choice to settle down after a day at Crystal Cove State Park. If you’re driving to the park in the morning, you’ll notice a long line of cars on the PCH at a tiny restaurant called the Crystal Cove Shake Shack. The Shack is a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch with a stunning view of the beach and ocean. 3. Located on the southeast end of the Balboa Peninsula, the Wedge has powerful surf and big swells perfect for bodysurfing, bodyboarding, and surfing. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to let the experts ride these waves, as they can get up to 30 feet. This Newport Beach, California, spot is not for the faint of heart! There are also beautiful oceanfront homes at the beach worthy of admiration. Many visitors like to sit on the jetty and watch the sunset across the Pacific Ocean while the boats come in and out of the harbor. Not only can you see the Wedge from the helicopter, but you can also see other prominent Newport Beach attractions on the Balboa Peninsula. Whether you choose the helicopter tour or not, the Lido House is a perfect place to stay on the Balboa Peninsula, giving you access to the Wedge and everything else the area provides. There are just over ten short piers where fishing is allowed without a license. You can find all types of bass fish, halibut, white seabass, small sharks, and giant bat rays. Dining in Newport Harbor is drool-worthy, with some of the best seafood restaurants in California. While Nobu may be an international chain, it’s still one of the best sushi restaurants in the state. And if you’re looking for other restaurants in the harbor, Javiers and The Winery are two very popular upscale restaurants. If you prefer a guided experience, you can see Newport Beach’s top attractions, including waterfront mansions, with this private 2-hour Newport Beach cruise. There are many options for accommodations in the area, so if you’d rather dock your boat and walk to your hotel, check out the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. 5. Go Shopping at Fashion Island and Lido Marina Village If you’re in the mood to shop, you must put Fashion Island on your travel itinerary. This outdoor shopping mall is for high-end shopping, including stores such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. Opened in 1967, Fashion Island is a relaxed yet sophisticated spot for shopping with views of the Pacific Ocean. If you still have more shopping on your list, head to Lido Marina Village, a stylish waterfront shopping center with boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. Many of the restaurants offer al fresco and dockside dining. After dining in the California sunshine, head to Billy’s At The Beach for the best Mai Tais in town. These Newport Beach, California, shopping areas offer the best of California shopping, with large anchor stores and small boutique shops. 6. Visit the Balboa Pier and Balboa Fun Zone Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 1 Balboa Pier, Newport Beach, CA 92661 Most people are familiar with the Balboa Pier because of the Balboa Fun Zone just in front of it. This local attraction brings in roughly seven million visitors annually and offers affordable fun for all ages. This vintage amusement park has been open since 1936, offering Ferris wheel
rides, arcade games, and more! Unlike most beachfront amusement parks, there is no admission fee to enter, so you can wander around the Newport Beach boardwalk, watch the sea lions, go shopping, or grab a bite to eat. The pier is popular for fishing, but most people stroll on the Balboa Pier to see the surfers or head to Ruby’s Diner at the end. The old-timey casual atmosphere with vinyl booths and soda fountains make Ruby’s Diner a California favorite. They offer delicious staples such as hamburgers, fries, and shakes, the perfect way to end your day at Newport Beach. Ride the Balboa Island Ferry Kim Magaraci / ViaTravelers Address: 510 Palm St, Newport Beach, CA 92661 If you’re heading to Balboa Island, the Balboa Island Ferry is the easiest way to get there. This ferry service shuttles visitors from the Balboa Peninsula at Newport Beach to Balboa Island. Since it’s less than 1,000 feet between the island and the Balboa Peninsula, the ferry ride is only about five minutes. They are open 365 days a year, only stopping service between midnight and 6 am. If you want to explore the island, head down Marine Avenue for all the best restaurants and shops. Traditional Irish music lures visitors to Doolin like a Siren's song, and cruises of the nearby Cliffs of Moher keep them coming back for more. Breakfast daily except where noted otherwise
5-day automatic car rental with unlimited mileage and CDW.

Jameson Whiskey Distillery Tour with

Dublin - 1 night
DAY 1: Arrive in Dublin
Arrive in Dublin and collect your bags. As you exit customs, your transfer representative will be waiting to take you to your hotel. Once you've gotten settled, head to the Jameson Whiskey Distillery for a tour of the facility and a comparison tasting. Use the afternoon to visit Trinity College and see the Book of Kells, an illustrated Gospel manuscript book dating back to the 9th century. After dinner, grab a pint at John Mulligan's - a Dublin institution since 1782.
JAMESON WHISKEY DISTILLERY TOUR WITH COMPARISON TASTING
The Old Jameson Distillery tour takes you on a journey into the romantic past of the art of Irish whiskey making. Although Jameson is sold all over the world today, it has its roots in this small distillery on Bow Street, founded in 1780 by John Jameson. Begin your tour with an introductory video, "The Story of Jameson." Afterwards you are invited to participate in a comparative tasting and sample a complimentary glass of Jameson, which is growing in popularity faster than any other whiskey in the world.
Cork - 1 night
DAY 2: Arrive in Cork
In the morning, make your way back to the airport to pick up your five-day rental car. From here on out, the routes you take and the stops you make are entirely up to you. You'll be making your way southwest to Cork, but there is plenty to see along the way. In "the marble city" of Kilkenny, take a tour of the 12th-century Kilkenny Castle, which will be guided or unguided depending on the time of year. The coastal route to Cork might be a bit more circuitous, but there are some breathtaking sights along the drive. Consider a stop at Hook Head Lighthouse in County Wexford, the oldest working lighthouse in the world. If you drive through Waterford, Ireland's oldest city, be sure to stop by the House of the Waterford Crystal and wander the medieval city center. When you arrive in Cork, check into your B&B and go for a walk to stretch your legs after a long day of driving. Treat yourself to an authentic Irish meal - bacon and cabbage, smoked salmon on soda bread, or, if you've got a stomach of steel, some tripe and drisheen from the English Market. Head back to your B&B so you can get some rest before your next full day of driving and sightseeing.
Killarney - 2 nights
DAY 3: Arrive in Killarney
Enjoy a fabulous breakfast at your B&B before heading out for another day of sightseeing. Just five miles northwest of Cork lies the town of Blarney, home to the Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone, which is said to bestow the gift of eloquence upon anyone who kisses it. In coastal Kinsale, take a barefoot walk on the beach or do some shopping in the town's whimsically colored boutiques. Those interested in history will want to visit the Titanic Experience in Cobh, housed in the original White Star Line Ticket Office where the final 123 passengers boarded the ill-fated ocean liner. When you've explored the Cork area to your liking, make your way to Killarney and check into your B&B. Take a leisurely stroll through the town and have dinner. The rest of your night is yours to explore - or not! - as you see fit.
DAY 4:
Today is all about magnificent Irish panoramas!
The 111-mile Ring of Kerry is one of the country's most spectacular scenic displays, winding past unspoiled beaches, medieval ruins, mountains, lush green pastures, and craggy island overlooks. Highlights of this drive include Derrynane National Historic Park, the colorful town of Kenmare, Skellig Michael, and the sprawling estate of Kells Bay House and Gardens. Keep in mind that Ring of Kerry tour buses are also departing from Killarney. If you decide to drive the circuit clockwise, the same direction as the buses, you might want to give them a good head start so they don't slow you down.
Just south of Killarney on the Ring of Kerry lies the pristine landscape of Killarney National Park. The area boasts miles of meandering trails that vary in grading from multi-access to very difficult. The 15th-century Ross Castle is one of the park's biggest attractions, as is the Victorian Muckross House. Immerse yourself in the natural surroundings with a stop at the Torc Waterfall, a picnic at the Lakes of Killarney, or a walk through the park's yew woodland.
After a whirlwind day of sightseeing, return to your B&B to rest and rejuvenate. For dinner, try a traditional Irish stew or boxty, a fried potato pancake. Be sure to carve out some time for a tour of Killarney and the park in a traditional jaunting car.
Galway - 1 night
DAY 5: Arrive in Galway
After an early breakfast, pack up your car and head north to Tarbert, where you'll catch the 20-minute ferry to Killimer. You won't have any problem filling your day in County Clare, with its sheer cliffs and rock formations, quaint Irish villages, and expansive water views. Don't miss the iconic Cliffs of Moher and the wild, windswept Loop Head Peninsula. Make a stop in Miltown Malbay for a taste of traditional Irish music, then head just a few minutes south to explore the rock pools, coves, and low cliffs of Spanish Point. Continue inland through rocky Burren National Park on your way to Galway. Check into your B&B and head into the city for dinner.
Bunratty - 1 night
DAY 6: Arrive in Bunratty
The only major urban hub on the Wild Atlantic Way, Galway is a lively mix of shop-lined streets and historic pubs. It's also a gateway to the natural wonders of County Galway. Visit the Dunguaire Castle on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay, or peruse the food and produce stalls of the centuries-old Galway Market. If you want to continue your landscape tour of Ireland, Connemara National Park lays claim to over 7,300 acres of mountains, woodlands, rivers, bogs, and heath. When you've seen your fill of County Galway, head south to County Clare and check into the Bunratty Castle Hotel. Depending on your itinerary for the day, you may or may not have some free time before your medieval banquet at the Bunratty Castle.
BUNRATTY MEDIEVAL BANQUET
Bunratty Castle was built in the 15th century by the Earl of Thomond, who was famous for his lavish parties and hospitality. Following this tradition, the world-renowned Bunratty Medieval Banquet is held twice nightly throughout the year. The evening will feature a four-course meal with wine, a lively reception, and entertainment by the Bunratty Singers.
DAY 7:
After breakfast, check out of your hotel and drive to Shannon Airport where you'll return your rental car. You'll no doubt be planning your next trip the Emerald Isle before your plane even lifts off the ground....

We woke up this morning, for the second time this trip, in the back of a rented Nissan Armada SUV. It was a pretty good night’s sleep, too, because of the cushions and mattress topper Kimmer found a coupla nights ago at Home Depot and Walmart. :-)
For posterity, the winning prescription goes like this: on the bottom, yoga mats we picked up at the Medford GoodWill; on top of those, the two sets of seat cushion pairs from Home Depot; on top of those, the thick foam mattress topper from Walmart and then one of our sleeping bags inside up, then us, then a wool blanket, then our other sleeping bag inside down, and finally... our duvet cover from home. Icing on a pretty layered cake, as it were.
It was all super comfy.
And warm.
A good night sleep was definitely had by us both.
By morning, the clouds and wind that rolled in last night were finally gone... well, at least the clouds cleared away.
Eventually.
Which made for a sun that was definitely cookiin’... at the same time the continued breezes cooled it all down.
It was a heckuva balancing act of temperature control. :-)
So sun, wind, waves. Yeah.
We’re off to a lazy morning start.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the way, I legitimately forgot what day it is today. Both the day and the date. That’s how far off our normal life schedule we’ve wandered.
Now earlier we talked a little about the solar panel set-up Kimmer’s cousin employs. He actually uses two: a larger one powering his teardrop trailer and a smaller one that’s mobile.
So far, though, Kimmer’s used the power, WiFi, and plentiful outdoor tables ‘n benches under quite lovely palm trees at the local shopping center for her Zoom meetings. Today, though, she’s thinking about using the domed tent her cousin set up along the west end of camp.
Tumblr media
So I set up table, chair, and equipment in there... she takes a seat to make sure she’ll be comfortable in there (which she is)... and thus the plan’s set.
Except.
A coupla minutes before her first meeting she discovers to her horror that her laptop’s nearly out of juice. Jumping to her rescue, her cousin does this:
Tumblr media
He grabs his smaller, mobile solar panel set up, moves it to the west side of the tent, snakes a cord into the tent and into a power bank he places at the foot of her desk into which I plug her laptop.
This was Kimmer’s aha! moment, by the way. Proof of concept. The one in which she realizes how working on the road could work. Could actually work.
She’s also sold on the idea of buying a WiFi hot spot while we’re down here because she’s well aware of how completely dependent we are on everyone else’s WiFi: Fred Meyer, Lowe’s, Moro Campground. In fact, our first attempt to do what we usually do on these trips, Starbucks, was a complete failure this time because what we usually do is snag a table for an hour or two for WiFi and recharging. So taking care of some of the business that followed us on this road trip has been, to say the least, a brain teasing, logistical challenge.
So it’s settled. Tomorrow, we’ll be passing by the Spectrum Center in Irvine where there’s a T-Mobile store. T-Mobile’s our cellular service provider... so we figure that’s where we’ll start.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the way, I called Oregon Light Truck & RV to see if it’d be okay for us to leave the Rialta with them one more day than planned... and here’s what the rep said:
“No problem. It’s only costing you $284 per day.”
That was a little joke, by the way. We’re totally good for another day. Plus, we ended the call wishing each other a Happy Easter.
Wow.
Tomorrow’s actually Easter.
Tumblr media
Okay so the story so far’s that Kimmer’s completely set with her Zoom meetings in her cousin’s tent with her laptop powered by the California sun.
In the morning, I while away the hours writing about our adventures thus far. Man, those first few days were brutal.
After lunch, I head out into the Laguna/Newport wilds gathering the different supplies and groceries here ‘n there of which we’re in need. Trader Joe’s, less than a mile from camp, was first on my route, of course. Picked up some lunch here and I swear if boy scout camping was more convenient like this I woulda totally been more into it.
Later I was at a nearby Starbucks sitting outside in the shade, partaking of both an iced chai tea latte and a little bit of peace.
Remember that?
Peace?
Seriously. It’s the best.
I highly recommend it.
In my case, the critical ingredients were a disconnect from my usual daily routine... and the time to experience what’s actually there when I’m not being a perpetual motion machine.
Tumblr media
After Kimmer’s last meeting of the day, we’re out for a walk again on the beach. These walks, by the way, are substituting for the ones we take along South Lake Union only way, way better.
I guess you’ll just have to trust me on that one.
Today’s walk was our longest walk while we were here, with the sun dropping ever lower and the tide creeping higher this time around.
We walked all the way to the other end below the Shake Shack high on the cliffs above. Also to the very end of those beach cottages that’re either being torn down or remodeled.
This end of the beach, especially, was hoppin’ with teens and families and couples and boogie boarders enjoying every last moment of the day.
On our return walk, I became fascinating by these four little birds with long necks and super narrow beaks. They seemed to be playing in the surf as well. Because as the surf receded, they chased after it. As it came back in again, they ran away from it. As in
Run away! Run away!
I’m guessing they were feeding on something right there at the leading edge of the moving surf. Tiny things that their beaks could snatch even with the surf racing away. But not when that surf was coming after them. In fact, whenever the surf raced too quickly for these birds, they’d take to the air... then set down immediately nearby.
Rinse.
Repeat.
Most of the time the four birds acted in sync. One time, though, three took to the air going left while the other broke right. Immediately realizing its predicament, the last one did a mid-air pivot... and throttled up until rejoining the rest.
And I suppose the reason I’m telling you about this tiny scene is that it really did feel like young friends hanging out. Doing stuff together. Joining and rejoining. All while being very young.
Tumblr media
Back at camp, it was full blown night as we joined the camp fire with family, enjoying each other’s company in conversation, joking around, and laughing.
It was a reminder how there are different ways for Peace to manifest in our lives. And for Joy to enter in.
Sitting alone at Starbucks. Walking a sunset beach together. Experiencing it even around a campfire.
We ended our day, once again, in the back of our SUV rental, this time partaking of a streaming episode of “Hot In Cleveland” on ParamountPlus.
Because, you know...
Camping.
