Dead Boy Detectives trailer released
Dead Boy Detectives trailer released
There’s a trailer for Dead Boy Detectives and I have to say it does look rather splendid. Without meaning to slight The Sandman, this looks to be a lot more fun. I can also see why Netflix chose to cancel Lockwood & Co, as this looks more than a little similar (at first glance). I talk about the trailer and the show for CultBox: Dead Boy Detectives trailer lands ahead of this month’s release.…

Behind the Scenes of The Shakespeare Code (Part 7)
Excerpt from CultBox interview with Dean Lennox Kelly - by Cameron K McEwan - 24 April 2013
We caught up with Doctor Who's William Shakespeare, actor Dean Lennox Kelly, yesterday at the launch of new BBC One drama Frankie in London. Discussing his 2007 episode of Doctor Who, 'The Shakespeare Code', Kelly told CultBox "It was amazing. Amazing. A lot of fun to work on - especially on The Globe stage. But I think I could have done a better job with that. I look back on it and I think, I could have done something a bit more." He recalled, "It's quite intimidating, acting with David Tennant... especially [with] his energy as The Doctor. Really, he's like a train. He just absolutely drives it. You really just have to keep up with him. When someone is [so] absolutely confident in himself and his choices and what he's doing - it's hard. Slightly intimidating. But fun, he's a lovely fella." Many commented on his portrayal of the Bard in Gareth Roberts' story, comparing him to a rock star, the former Shameless star told us. "The director would say to me, 'Think Liam Gallagher with the mind of a genius!' Woah! What a direction that is! He was a celebrity rock star, wasn't he? I wasn't doing a biog, was I? [laughs]" Looking back on his short involvement in the show, Dean was enthusiastic and appreciative of the attention he received (and still does). When news of his casting broke, fans were quick to contact him, he revealed. "Doctor Who is extraordinary. Even when I got cast, I started getting fan mail. I hadn't even done it yet, I was getting fan mail. You know, I nearly had a little figurine made. That close but it just didn't happen. Would have been amazing, a little figurine!"

The BBC, Marketing, and Doctor Who
Power of the Doctor is meant to be airing this month. Legend of the Sea Devils was broadcast in April, and yet the information they gave us then about the special was exceptionally minimal - a brief trailer, no concrete air date beyond ‘Autumn 2022’, and no title.
Since then, the BBC’s only meaningful contributions have been confirming the casting of POTD, by which I mean naming the actors we’d all recognised from the trailer (i.e. Sophie Aldred, Sacha Dhawan, Janet Fielding, etc) and narrowing the air date down to ‘October 2022′, which fans had already predicted as it would be during the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.
We didn’t even have a name for the episode until 14 September, when it was confirmed by Doctor Who Magazine, but it wasn’t mentioned by the official social media channels until 21 September, when we got a poster and the words ‘coming soon’. The BBC released a handful of images with the magazine, but here we are in October 2022, when the episode is meant to air, with no concrete information beyond a title, and a cast list.
Cultbox reported that the BBC’s centenary itself falls on 18 October, meaning the week of 16 - 23 October would be the most likely for the episode to be broadcast, but that means that the special is at closest 13 days away (assuming a Sunday air date, which would be the most likely due to Strictly taking up a chunk of the Saturday schedules) or at furthest, 20 days. And yet we have no final trailer, and no confirmed air date.
Legend of the Sea Devils’ air date was confirmed on 28 March, 19 days before the episode aired, with a final trailer released 15 days prior, on a Saturday evening. Assuming that POTD is airing at the latest on 23 October, we should expect to see a similar pattern, but the official social media channels haven’t even hinted at a trailer, and indeed, it would usually debut on a Saturday or Sunday evening, when the largest share of viewers will be watching BBC One.
I don’t understand what the BBC is doing with their marketing for Doctor Who. They seem determined to do the minimum publicity possible, then seem confused or disheartened when viewer shares and fan interest are low. I would have expected the show to have a panel at New York Comic Con this weekend, perhaps with Jodie, Mandip and John (or Sacha, or Sophie, or Janet) attending. Instead, we are just under 2 - or maybe 3? - weeks out, with no air date, no final trailer, and no publicity campaign, unless posting stills from Jodie’s past episodes onto Instagram and Twitter counts (which arguably, it doesn’t). I don’t understand the BBC’s actions, and all of my enthusiasm for the episode has vanished in the face of so much uncertainty, the lack of information, and the general lack of ‘giving a damn’ from the BBC.
Interested to hear others’ thoughts.

Mark Gatiss drops exciting info on League of Gentlemen reunion
POSTED JUNE 7, 2017 BY CULTBOX EDITOR & FILED UNDER HEADLINES.
Tumblr media
Mark Gatiss spoke to the Oxford Union yesterday and apparently dropped a few exciting tidbits of information on the League of Gentlemen reunion.
The list of people chosen to address the famed Oxford Union is long and auspicious. The latest in that line is none other than actor/writer Mark Gatiss. He sat down in the grand venue yesterday (June 6th) to talk about a wide range of subjects.
In the audience for the event was CultBox writer Tom Marshall, who has chronicled the conversation on his own blog.
League of Gentlemen reunion
Interestingly, among his recollections of the event, is Gatiss’ response to a question about the rumoured League of Gentlemen reunion. Should that come about this year, it would mark 15 years since the show last aired. On the subject, Tom reports that:
“the League of Gentlemen reunion came up fairly early on, with the interviewer mentioning the mooted air date of 2019 or 2020; Gatiss notes that all he had actually said on the matter was that it would be “an anniversary” and thus they could hold on to the idea until “the fiftieth anniversary”! However, he confirmed that they’ve had several meetings about it, are hoping to shoot this year, and have a number of what he thinks are pretty good ideas.”
So, we may yet get to see something from the show sooner than many expected.
Tom goes on to say that:
“He claims the group never really split up, just went off and did other things, and that they remain very good friends. Almost everything in the show, apparently, is based on real people – stuff that makes the trio laugh; Papa Lazarou, for instance, is based on a childhood anecdote of Reece Shearsmith’s.”
Thanks to Tom for the heads-up on this – you can read his full account of the event here.
Mark Gattis’ new episode of Doctor Who, ‘The Empress of Mars’, is due to air this Saturday, you can read all about that in our Doctor Who series 10 episode guide, here.

Professor T returns tonight!
Series 3 of Professor T starts at 9 pm tonight (27 Mar) on ITV. I expect I will compare Ben Miller’s performance with my recent Death in Paradise series 1 & 2 rewatch, but I’m also keen to see how the Cambridge based crime series develops, and just how the Professor deals with his time in prison. While I set my recorder for tonight (yes, it will be on ITVX!), why don’t you check out the new…

So CultBox got served with a legal letter from the BBC for reporting the airdate of a certain show's season opener, after the BBC partner iTunes announced the date in the season's listing. Cultbox has removed the offending article, and iTunes has now scrubbed the date.
The BBC is reportedly asking fans to take down screencaps of the iTunes listing which have been on social media since this morning.
Incidentally, I am not planning to go anywhere on the first Sunday in October if I can help it.
