The education gap is very clear and I don’t mean this in a condescending way.
#we are just getting dumber as a society no critical thinking skills or reasoning#also education gap is legit why they want to ban books and make changes to curriculum#people don’t fact check and I don’t even think they teach that in schools anymore#they taught us to fact check and look at multiple sources freshmen year then things really shifted

Everytime someone gets on my nerves or even slightly looks at me funny I kind of. Grind my jaw aggressively. Slowly. Irritably. And it clicks.

Math teacher anon: what that's crazy! Because I too am sped but do math, I just say I'm a math teacher bc it's quicker
AKEJSDNFKSDJNF THAT'S CRAZY
I currently do a lot of Algebra 1 support because the Freshmen need a lot of help adjusting to high school math. The middle school curriculum in my district is....lacking, to say the least. I know a lot of other districts are in the same situation as us right now. Not the teacher's fault, ofc, it's a top-down decision. But it does mean that my students are coming in not knowing anything, like even basic stuff like "what's 2 * 3" or "solve x - 5 = 10" which has been a fun challenge! But they seem to be getting the hang of it now. Though, fractions still trip them up, but I'm trying my best to build their confidence with it!
I will give them a LOT of credit for much of their overall attitude, too. We've had some very frank class discussions about how behind they are in math because of the way everything is currently set up with the whole national grade inflation issue, and they've really taken it well. Most of my students (both gen ed and IEP/504) are very motivated to catch up, even if it's hard. Though, ofc, people all have their off days! But most of my students reallyyy are trying. I give them a TON of credit for that. They're basically learning multiple years of math at once. That's very tough!
#not dp related#lexx's irl shenanigans#thankfully it seems like change in the middle school curriculum is on the horizon#parents are understandably upset that their 12 year old doesn't know their times tables#and are starting to speak out#tho idk if i'm just wishful thinking rn that the other side won't be louder#but i hope more parents start coming to town hall meetings and voicing their issues!!#that's about as much as I can say on the grade inflation / no grade issue without getting into trouble probably

Young Teacher Tuvok Patreon | Ko-fi
#Person: So I heard from the students that you're the headteacher? / Tuvok: ???This is a college???#his kids gave him a mug that says 'Father' bc it would be impossible to ascertain whether or not he is in fact the no.1 dad#despite their own emphatically positive opinions...'Father' is factual v_v (in my mind the mug just has a vulcan symbol)#bea art tag#st voyager#Tuvok#Tuvok went through Starfleet training/academy - Quit - Then probably had to go to a whole different college to get a teaching license#When he re-entered Starfleet did he have to take lessons again?? Is there a separate license to be a Starfleet instructor?#After being expelled from his school as a teen ... how long was he with the monks? Did he repeat a grade?#Tuvok your education fascinates me#Vulcan school - expelled - learning at a temple with monks - repeat grade? / Vulcan school - graduate#enter starfleet academy - graduate - quit - enter college - graduate - teach - quit job - enter starfleet (academy?) - graduate?#- starfleet teaching license - end#note: I don't think under normal human circumstances you'd need to go back to the academy but Tuvok quit Starfleet at like 20 something#and who knows how many decades passed since then - I'm sure the curriculum changed a lot in like 70 years v_v#maybe....a few catchup courses. Like a semester instead of four(?) years#st voyager art#also I like the thought that Tuvok is considered introverted/reserved even amongst Vulcans#Less so than how humans perceive him but still enough that it IS a personality trait rather than purely a cultural difference

Lately I am in such an incredibly back and forth flux of
I am so under valued and unappreciated
And
LOL you and your art/designs aren’t special or even good get real. Absolutely 0 companies are noticing you let alone want you.
Had a genuinely lovely day collaborating with the rest of the fine art team- my people through and through. If this was work all the time, I wouldn’t dream of leaving. But it’s not. It’s once in a blue moon.
I’m not even sure I should leave. I got it in my head that I want to. But do I really want to upend the steadfast security of this job? A place where my peers know and respect me? Nobody questions me but higher ups ignore my attempts to change things that need changing.
Though to be real, the county over is at a budget deficit and attempting to furlough teachers. So. That’s no fun.
I’m really good at this job- why do they have to keep making it harder and more stressful despite me pointing out ways to NOT DO THAT
For me OR the kids for fucks sake!
Everyone at my school is teaching way more courses than is historically normal and I just feel like this is the beginning of a slippery slope
But it’s also a slope I’m familiar with, at least?
It’s extremely hard to fire me, ten years in with tenure and a good reputation. But how much more bullshit is going to be shoved our way? I have two kids with major medical concerns this round and god knows that’ll be great for what is likely CPTSD from mom being chronically and unstably ill all of my life.
Ahhhhh?????????!!!!!
#kids aren’t even back yet!!#somebody just tranq me or something#someone today said they can feel things changing in a positive direction and I just nodded because?? no????#if all I had to do was teach kids that genuinely wanted to learn the electives I am supposed to be teaching I’d be fine#I haven’t even looked at the code dot org curriculum yet and school starts in a week#why do I feel so pressed to do so well for so little in return#and don’t tell me it’s for the kids#they will be fine regardless and the ones whose lives I’ve touched will stay connected to me#why am I here?!! what was I made for??! why is capitalism hell?!!#WHY IS IT ALWAYS EXISTENTIAL AUGUST BUT THIS YEAR ITS DIALED UP TO 11!!

it makes me sad how often textile arts are ignored as actual art forms, and are relegated to the disregarded realm of 'old lady hobbies'. there is so much skill involved, such a broad diversity of forms, but so many people straight up do not think of things like crochet or quilting as art.
#i mean apprenticing with a textile artist as a teen definitely changed how i view quilts and tapestries#before then i had never really realized what was possible or what was involved in creating these things#but i think everyone should at least be taught how to sew and either knit or crochet as a child.#that should just be part of standard school curriculum.#textile art should be taught as a unit in art classes right alongside oil painting - the history of goes back even farther and is so#culturally important to literally every culture in the world and yet it is almost never considered academically the way paintings are.

I think it’s rather interesting what ruminating in a too hot bath tub will do to you and what horrible memories it happens to dredge up.
Reactionaries in all forms like and want the optics of safety but do not want to put in the effort of actually keeping its vulnerable populations safer.
When I was younger the schools used a Catholic, “abstinence centred” sexual education curriculum known as “Fully Alive” which was pushed well into high school. But I think what is important is the stuff they teach the younger kids. They taught the sexual organs, which was anatomy of a penis and a vagina on the page, as well as sperm production and the menstrual cycle.
You know what they didn’t teach? Consent in any form. They didn’t start to mention sex at all as a concept until like grade 6 at the least.
You know who didn’t get the “privilege” of not being touched inappropriately? Who got molested before they could fully understand the concept of sex? Us!
Like it or not, in order to responsibly and reasonably raise your children to be safe from sexual violence and exploitation, you need to teach consent and what is a form of appropriate touch and what isn’t. From the moment a child is able to register their own body parts in relation to other peoples bodies. As well as what the appropriate forms of action are, lest they find themselves in those situations.
Fully Alive as a concept fails not just because it teaches Abstinence only sex education, but because it does not consider the upsetting reality that a child may find themselves in a position of being exploited BEFORE they are of the age that adults around them feel comfortable with breaching the topic of sex and sexual relations with others.
It prioritizes keeping a child’s ignorance, purity and above all else instilling the “proper Christian values” about sex. Because those FEEL like safe ways to protect kids to a bunch of oblivious grownups, and are comfortable/noncontroversial to teach! Rather than actually teaching kids about sex, and who they can find safety in, if they find themselves in a situation and position of sexual abuse, and exploitation.
But what I think is truly insidious and horrible about that book, is that it gives these institutions plausible deniability. You can’t criticize them! They taught kids about safe sex and how the bits work, that’s all you need to know! And you’re actually the weird one for advocating that kids are more informed and not just given the bare bones run down about sex. Not just about their bodies but about others and how they should (or should NOT) treat their bodies!
Bonus points it had a whole section in the highschool version about being against abortion and advocating for people to join anti-abortion causes (oh and I guess non-committedly being against the death penalty… lol)
I personally don’t have many triggers but those shitty purple textbooks are one of them. And it’s pretty much a whole joke at this point.
#mod twig 🍂#and for those who are asking ‘isn’t this the parent’s responsibility?’#yes I agree#but for many#including myself#this option is the only real engagement they will get when it comes to these conversations#so no#we cannot reasonably expect and place the entire responsibility on the parents#the curriculum needs to change to reflect what I’ve just stated in order to ACTUALLY be safe and help the demographic it’s targeting

genuine life hack - if you are researching something or trying to learn/understand something, look for teaching resources and/or curriculum for that topic. Teacher resources, guides, and curriculums are meant to be explicit with all explanations on the back (teacher) end and easy to understand on the front (student) end, which means they are the easiest things to learn from
trust me
#jackshit#maybe its a skill issue and only teachers can get a shit load of information from curriculum guides because its a skill you kinda pick up#buT its not one youre taught lmfao you're just trapped in a room with feral children and these books to teach yourself the content to teach#to them#and like#it really is so easy to glean the information from them#because its a for dummies guide built to be consumed and taught in a field with an extremely high turnover rate#and there are SO many free resources out there built for teachers that you don't need to prove you're a teacher to get#like so many places will just have a little 'educators' or 'teacher resources' tab and bam#there you have the strong foundation to understand that thing#ive never found a text book useful and that's because it's missing the back end of it XD once you have that the world CHANGES besties
