Custom 1953 Muntz Jet Convertible

This 1953 Muntz Jet convertible underwent a three-year custom build under previous ownership, and it was purchased by the seller in 2021. The car is powered by a fuel-injected 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9″ rear end, and it is finished in Apple Pearl with a white Carson-style removable top over gray snakeskin-style Naugahyde upholstery. Features include custom bodywork, an Art Morrison frame, power-assisted steering, four-wheel disc brakes, airbag suspension, Painless Performance wiring, and more modified and fabricated details. This custom-built Muntz is now offered with a copy of Rodder’s Journal magazine featuring a story on the build and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s business.

The steel, aluminum, and fiberglass body is mounted on an Art Morrison ladder frame that was boxed and finished in semi-gloss black, and the floor was raised 3″. The exterior was repainted in a Sherwin Williams two-stage Apple Pearl mixed by the late Stan Betz. Features include a chopped Duvall-style windshield, 1950 Chevrolet headlights, dual Appleton spotlights, 1951 Ford Victoria side windows, and a white removable Carson-style top fabricated to match the height of the chopped windshield. Additional equipment includes color-matched rear fender skirts and chrome bumpers. Wear from fitting the top is noted on the rear deck.

Steel wheels sourced from a 1976 Dodge measure 15″ and are mounted with Cadillac Sombrero-style covers and whitewall tires. A matching spare fitted with a BFGoodrich Silvertown tire is mounted within a rear-mounted Continental-style chrome carrier. A Mustang II front end accommodates power rack-and-pinion steering , and the car rides on an electronically-adjustable Air Ride Technologies airbag suspension system along with 2” lowered front spindles, Strange Engineering tube shocks, a rear Panhard bar, and front and rear sway bars. The seller reports that the front control arm bushings were recently replaced.

Braking is handled by GM G-body-sourced calipers matched with Ford Granada discs up front and Ford SVO-specification calipers and discs at the rear.

The cabin was customized by Jim’s Auto Trim of San Diego, California, and features Glide bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in gray snakeskin-style Naugahyde upholstery, along with matching treatments for the dash trim, headliner, and door panels. Additional equipment includes a 1952 Lincoln steering wheel mounted to a shortened Lincoln steering column, gray cut-pile carpet, and a Pioneer stereo housed within a custom center cubby.

The engine-turned “Hollywood” instrument cluster houses Stewart Warner gauges consisting of an 8k-rpm tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and auxiliary readings for fuel level, battery charge, oil pressure, and water temperature. The five-digit odometer displays 25k miles, though total chassis mileage is unknown. A Lokar pedal assembly was fitted during the build.

The Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 V8 features a polished fuel intake manifold along with billet aluminum valve covers, and additional features include an Opti-Spark distributor, a Griffin aluminum radiator, and a wiring loom sourced from Painless Performance Wiring. A set of long-tube headers are connected to a 2.5″ exhaust system equipped with dual Dynaflow mufflers. The seller reports that the oil was recently changed.

Ford Thunderbird Apollo Concept, 1967. Five Apollo concept cars were created for Abercrombie & Fitch to bolster traffic in their 5 flagship stores. The new 5th generation T-Bird represented a major move upmarket as the Mustang had encroached on the Thunderbird’s market positioning. Ford were happy to provide A&F with the cars to generate publicity for the new generation model. The cars were finished in an exclusive Apollo Blue colour, and sent to long-time Ford customiser Dearborn Steel Tubing Company for “enhancement” and finishing, at a cost of $15,000 per unit (about $137,000 in 2022). In addition to the special paint and vinyl roof there was a gold anodised grille emblem, landau S-bars and badge work. Significantly the cars were fitted with prototype ASC sunroofs because there was no convertible 5th generation T-bird as there had been with all previous generations. Ford hoped the sunroof option would appease open-air enthusiasts though it didn’t become available until 1969. Also fitted were a quartz foglight, bespoke wheel covers and a trunk-mounted antennae to support the numerous wireless devices. Inside there was a custom-built full-length centre console including a radio-telephone, Philco colour TV, and dual reading lamps. Of the 5 cars built one was destroyed in transit to the San Francisco store but at least 3 of the others are still known to exist.

   The car sounded like it had swallowed a nightingale as it rolled up to the open garage doors of the workshop, and Frankie grabbed a towel to wipe some grime off his hands while he slowly walked out there to greet what was sure to be a new customer.    He didn’t recognize the car or the license plate, so it wasn’t one of his regulars, but he did recognize the make and model of the machine.

   A classic 1967 Mustang, one of his favorites. And this one was in mint condition, all black with silver detailing and tinted windows. An absolute masterpiece.    It looked almost alive and somewhat menacing when it was so well polished and it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the styling, which was still true to the classic look, but utilized modern materials.

   When he got to the front left corner of it, the driver’s door opened, and his eyebrows shot up as he watched a woman step out and come towards him.    Not because he couldn’t believe, or for whatever reason felt, that women didn’t belong behind the wheel of such a car, but because this particular woman was even more gorgeous than her choice of vehicle.

   She was wearing dark brown worker boots, tight black jeans, and a black silk blouse to compliment the vehicle, but her short Pink!-style hair had a deep purple shade, fading into pale blue at the ends, a look which seriously suited her.    He also noticed that she wasn’t wearing any jewelry but had a Sinn watch around her wrist, a brand which boasts some of the toughest watches on the market, all of which gave him the feeling that this was no delicate flower of a woman.

   “Hey, sorry to drop by without an appointment,” she said while pulling off her sapphire blue Oakley sunglasses, revealing almost golden colored eyes.

   “That’s okay, I’ve got time. She sounds terrible,” Frankie replied, nodding towards the machine.

   “Yeah, I don’t know what happened, she was running fine five minutes ago.    Think you can take a look?” she asked, and he couldn’t help but smile.

   “She’s absolutely beautiful, I’d love to look at her all day. But yeah, pop the hood and I’ll see what’s going on.”

   She did as he asked, and the first thing he noticed was that this engine was custom built and by someone truly talented.    But at first glance, he couldn’t find any obvious cause for the racket, so he asked her to start it up so he could listen to the noise more clearly, and after just a few seconds he signed for her cut the engine again.

   “I’d say it’s probably coming from the exhaust. I’ll need to lift it up to know for sure.    You want me to try and fix it for you right now, or do you wanna make an appointment?”

   “If you have the time to take care of it right away, you’d be making my day,” she chimed, sounding absolutely astounded that he might actually be able to fit her in immediately.

   “Sure, I’ve only got a standard service scheduled for today and that customer is abroad, so it can wait. A beauty like this shouldn’t have to roll around sounding like a freaked-out crow,” he offered, and that made her smile, damned near taking his breath away.

   He asked her to drive it onto the ramp, letting her step out before he raised it, and she remained right next to him when he got to work. He noted that she was careful not to get in his way, though, and she didn’t attempt to criticize anything he did.    Instead, it seemed like she was just eager to learn more about the car and how to take care of it, which only made him enjoy her company all the more.

   “So, you were just out driving when it suddenly started sounding like this?” he asked, both to carry on a conversation, and to learn more about the problem.

   “Yeah, there was no indication at all that anything was out of order, it came out of nowhere,” she elaborated. “Normally, I’d have taken it to my regular mechanic, but he’s on vacation and I don’t trust his colleague with my girl. He’s way too sloppy.”

   “So, no pressure, then,” he chuckled drily.

   “Oh, I already know you’re a better mechanic than that guy, so you can relax,” she reassured him, which really did calm him.

   So many customers, and especially those with fancy cars of any kind, would get so uptight about him not putting a scratch on their expensive toys, that they’d deliberately try and put as much pressure on him as possible.    But this lovely woman was just concerned about him actually fixing the problem, and seemed to understand that adding any tension to the situation was only going to make that harder.

   “Have you done any work on it yourself?” he asked, trying to distract himself from the fact that she was rapidly becoming very attractive, in every possible way.

   “Pretty much the entire exterior,” she started, and he was mildly surprised by that. “I’ve never worked with painting cars, but I’ve been doing it as a hobby since my teens.    I’ve ordered, but sometimes also made custom detailing, like the new headlights and the grill. I love that sort of thing. Tweaking tiny details to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing look, but without taking focus away from the beauty of the entire machine.    I’ve always wished that I could somehow do that stuff for a living, but I’ve just never been able to.”

   Seriously?    With that level of talent she should’ve been working at a custom shop a long time ago.

   “Wow. It’s actually kinda hard to believe that no one’s taken an interest, because the first thing I thought when I saw this car, was that it looks fucking perfect.    You’ve got a really good eye,” he complimented, meaning every word, and she seemed truly grateful to hear it.

   “I just love to make cars look their best. Like stylists do with people, or real estate agents with houses. It makes me feel all buzzed to look at a gorgeously styled car, or motorcycle, or anything on wheels, really,” she elaborated, and for the first time since he met her, she looked a little shy, or unsure.

   As if she wasn’t used to being able to say these things without getting laughed at.

   “Well, I’m just a small business grease monkey, but I’m pretty good at what I do too, and I’m telling you, if I’d only had the means, I’d have hired you on the spot.”

   She smiled so warmly at him as she heard that, and it made something very pleasant spread through his blood.

   It turned out that the problem was just the air intake tube on the catalytic converter, so it was an easy fix, and Frankie was almost a bit annoyed at that, because it meant that he would lose her company much too soon.

   “Okay, all done,” he announced once he’d lowered the car and had her start it up again to make sure that his diagnosis had been correct.

   “Great, I’m so glad it wasn’t something serious.    How much do I owe you?” she chirped, but he just shrugged, suddenly feeling quite unhappy.

   “Nothing. It took me less than fifteen minutes and that tube costs like a dollar,” he said, showing his hands in his pockets to keep them from moving around nervously.

   He really wanted to ask her out, but he felt like there was no way in hell she’d agree to that. He wasn’t nearly cool enough to hold the interest of a woman like that.

   “Oh. Okay…” she replied, suddenly looking so misplaced in his garage, with her quiet but strong confidence and overall powerful look, against the backdrop of clutter and dirt. “Well, if you ever need a paintjob, let me know.”

   “Sure. But I’d need your number for that,” he cheekily pointed out, thinking there was no chance he’d ever get it.

   Which was why, when she stepped over to a really dusty old car-door, standing leaned against the end of his workbench, and wrote her number in the dust, he just dumbly stared at her, unable to say a single thing.

   “I’ll look forward to hearing from you,” she said with a soft curve to her lips, and then she got back into her car and left.

   He stood there, still staring after her, unable to process what had just taken place, when his cellphone started ringing.

   “Morales,” he answered without even looking at the screen to see who was calling, because he was still staring outside, listening for the sound of that gorgeous engine.

   “Hey, Frankie,” he heard Pope on the other end, and the familiar voice broke through the stunned silence in his brain.

   “Santi… you’re not gonna believe what just happened at the garage…”

I can also take a lot of the information that I have learned this month to continue pushing the brand of the Mandarin Mustangs who I coach varsity football for. I have taken the lead on creating an alumni Instagram page to highlight the players who have since graduated and moved on to college. The idea is to promote their college football games and to promote a family environment that lasts for years to come. This will become a staple in why it means so much more to be a Mandarin Mustang football alumni. The museum, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is the oldest military aviation museum in the world. It’s also the largest military aviaton museum in the world. It features more than 360 aircraft and missiles.

Don’t worry. I’m not going to barrage you with a boatload of detailed information. I know my audience. I’ll share 3 highlights:

1. Like most people my age, I have a fascination with JFK. Even though he was assassinated when I was a toddler, the older folks kept talking about JFK. Many American homes, and every Catholic School, featured a photo of JFK.

On the Dallas street where Kennedy was shot, I’ve stood on the “X” that marks the spot where the bullet hit JFK. Above that spot, I’ve stood at the book depository window where the assassin fired the shot. I’ve stood at JFK’s grave.

Today, at the Air Force Museum, I completed the rest of the JFK assassination story. I walked through the plane that carried JFK to Dallas on that fateful day. It’s also the plane that carried Kennedy’s body back to Washington DC. Just before that return trip, LBJ took the oath of office on that plane.

At the time of Kennedy’s assassination, the plane was brand new. It became “Air Force One” in 1962. It remained in service for 36 years. In addition to Kennedy, it was used by Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush I, and Clinton. That plane has seen a ton of history. It was unsettling to walk through the plane that brought Kennedy to Dallas and flew his body home.

2. On a lighter note, there’s a small plane right next to JFK’s Air Force One. When LBJ was president, he liked to go to his ranch in Stonewall, Texas. The ranch was about 80 miles from the nearest Air Force Base. The Air Force needed a little plane to fly the Johnson family from the base to the ranch. They bought a little plane and they called it the “Lady Bird Special.”

3. The last vehicle I’ll discuss isn’t a plane. It’s a Ford Mustang. This customized Ford Mustang is called the X-1. It’s named after the first plane that broke the sound barrier. From the outside, it looks like a fancy Mustang. The inside is redesigned to look like the cockpit of a jet fighter. If you saw a photo of the inside, you would think that you were looking at a jet fighter. There are two seats down the centerline of the car, one ejection seat in front and another ejection seat in the back. It’s the set-up for a pilot and co-pilot. The instrument panel looks like the panel from a plane. Like a plane, there’s a small u-shaped steering wheel The stick shift looks like a flight stick. It’s a cool car. For 10 years, the Air Force drove the X-1 all over America as a recruiting tool.

After 3 hours at the museum, we headed off for lunch. I’ll report 3 things from that trip:

1. We drove past a small storefront business that’s obviously owned by some funny guys. It’s called “Free At Last Bail Bonds.” Their slogan is “Call Us And Let Freedom Ring.” Who knew that bail bondsmen were funny?

2. Does anybody remember Erma Bombeck? I do. She was my mother’s favorite writer. She focused on everyday life. She wrote funny books and funny newspaper columns. She was hilarious. Her books included: “I Lost Everything In The Post-Natal Depression,” “The Grass Is Always Greener Over The Septic Tank,” and “If Life Is A Bowl Of Cherries, What Am I Doing In The Pits?” On the way to lunch, we drove on Erma Bombeck Boulevard. It turns out that Erma was raised in Dayton, went to college at the University of Dayton, and is buried in Dayton. Small world.

3. Yes, we finally made it to lunch. Our goal was to try Dayton-style pizza. Until we got here, we didn’t know that Dayton Pizza was a thing. Did you? It has a very thin crust, unsweetened sauce, and it’s sliced in tiny squares. We hit a legendary place called Cassano’s. Yummy. Everyone who visits Dayton should go to Cassano’s.
