The rear-facing camera array protrudes slightly from the case, so the Note 5 is slightly unstable on flat surfaces.

We calculated this performance using our Linksys EA8500 reference router. Our test device loaded websites quickly when we were close to the router, but we did have to wait for some images to load. The Note 5 still had full Wi-Fi reception when we took the device around ten meters (~33 ft) away from the router with three walls between the two devices. Websites loaded just as fast as they do when we tested the Note 5 with it close to our reference router.

The Note 5 supports seven LTE bands, which is rather paltry in comparison to other devices. In practice, this means that you may struggle with connecting to an LTE network in more exotic countries. Our test device had good mobile network reception on the German D2 network. We still had good reception even in buildings in built-up areas.

The main camera can record videos in up to 1080p at 30 FPS. The video quality is passable, although bright areas are often underexposed, while dark areas lack detail. Recordings are sharp though. There is a 120 FPS slow motion feature, which is recorded at 720p.

The Note 5 has a 13 MP front-facing camera, which in theory could make the Note 5 a selfie star. While the Note 5 does well for a more affordable device, it does not come close to more premium smartphones. Dark areas are exposed well, but bright areas often dominate a photograph. Sharpness is rather average too, but the front-facing camera reproduces colors well.

Input Devices & Operation Xiaomi has installed Google GBoard as the Note 5’s default keyboard. Other keyboards are available from the Google Play Store.

The Note 5 has a touchscreen that has a slick, smooth surface. Touch inputs are precise even at the corners and at the edges of the display. There is a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device that quickly and reliably unlocks our test device. The fingerprint sensor does not have any special gestures or configurable commands like we have seen on other devices, such as the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. There is a software-based quick ball which displays selected links when you click on them. This feature is less functional than using the standard on-screen navigation buttons though. Whereas opening a link with the quick ball takes a total of two clicks, using the standard navigation buttons takes just one click. A supplementary input method should increase functionality and ease of use in our opinion, rather than further complicate matters.

The hardware buttons can be found on the right-hand side of the case. These feel premium, are easy to use and have a clear pressure point.

Display Sub-pixel array Sub-pixel array The Note 5 has a 5.99-inch display with a 2:1 aspect ratio. The display has a 2,160x1,080 native resolution, which results in a pixel density of 403 PPI. Our test device has an impressively bright display, which averaged 532.2 cd/m² using X-Rite i1Pro 2. Only the Motorola Moto G6 Plus has a brighter display of our comparison devices, with the Honor 7X scoring just slightly lower than the Note 5. The Moto G6 Plus is an outlier in this respect though with its 723 cd/m² average maximum luminosity. This is incredibly bright for a device at this price. The Note 5 has 94% display uniformity too, which is at least 4% better than the best of our comparison devices. In practical terms, this means that the large areas of color look uniformly bright. It is worth pointing out that we achieved this level of luminosity with the device on charge and with the brightness sensor turned off. Measuring our test device either on battery or with the brightness sensor turned on results in a lower average maximum brightness value.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) ℹTo dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether. Screen flickering / PWM detected 2358 Hz ≤ 20 % brightness setting The display backlight flickers at 2358 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 20 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 2358 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 51 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 9378 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz was measured.

The Note 5 has a 0.23 cd/m² black value that is both notably good and significantly better than our comparison devices. This low black value helps our test device achieve a laudable 2,252:1 contrast ratio that is leagues ahead of our comparison devices. This helps make colors pop and gives black tones a rich quality to them.

We subjected our test device to our spectrophotometer and CalMAN software to get a more detailed look at the display. The results highlight a significant blue tint to the display, which results in light blue and orange tones looking noticeably different than the sRGB reference color. The color space coverage is good overall, but the blue tint is one downside.

Unfortunately, the Note 5 uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) to regulate luminosity at and below 20% brightness. We notice a flicker to the display when the brightness is at this level, which we measured at 2,358 Hz. This frequency should be high enough for those who are PWM sensitive not to feel any ill effects, although this cannot be guaranteed.

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.9 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 83 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (39.7 ms). The Note 5 has a relatively bright display, which helps when using the device outdoors. We could still see screen content with brightness set to maximum if we were not in too bright an area. The display has a glossy finish though, so reflections cannot be avoided.

The Note 5 has an IPS display, which helps to give the device strong viewing angles. There are slight brightness and color shifts at acute viewing angles, but these are picked up more by the camera than they are noticeable by the naked eye.

The Note 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, a mid-range SoC that Qualcomm announced late last year. The Snapdragon 636 has an octa-core Kyro 260 CPU that clocks up to 1.8 GHz. The Snapdragon 636 is a significant improvement on its predecessor, the Snapdragon 630 that powers the Moto G6 Plus. The Snapdragon 636 helps the Note 5 to typically perform around 20% faster than the G6 Plus in benchmarks. Equally, the Note 5 feels snappy in practice, with our test device not slowing down even when we have numerous programs open in the background.

The Snapdragon 636 integrates a Qualcomm Adreno 509 GPU that supports DirectX 12.1, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 and Direct3D 12. This support for modern graphics APIs should ensure that the Note 5 is future proofed at least in terms of graphics. While the Note 5 has faster GPU performance than our comparison devices too, the gap is not as great as in our CPU tests.

The Note 5 performs better than our comparison devices in browser benchmarks too. Our test device even outperformed slightly more expensive devices. Complex HTML 5 websites like Google Interland are displayed fluidly, which is reflective of our real-world use. While the Note 5 is not as fast at loading websites as premium smartphones, it is sufficient for general web browsing.

The Note 5 is on par with our comparison devices in terms of microSD card performance. We tested the Note 5 with our trusted Toshiba Exceria Pro M501 reference microSD card. The Note 5 is equipped with eMMC memory, which is faster than the average of devices that we tested with 32 GB of eMMC memory. eMMC memory is no match for faster UFS memory though. The Note 5 even struggles against the Moto G6 Plus, which is also equipped with eMMC memory.

Games The Note 5 is suitable for relatively simple mobile games. 60 FPS gaming is possible in less demanding titles like “Shadow Fight 3”, but the Note 5 struggles when we tested it against more demanding titles. “Arena of Valor”, for example, only averaged 31 FPS, while “PUBG Mobile” averaged 25 FPS. This is still high enough for stable gaming though. We would recommend looking at more expensive devices if you want to plan the most cutting-edge mobile games at 60 FPS as the Note 5 is not powerful enough for that. The Note 5 is perfectly suited for games like “Shadow Fight 3” and “Angry Birds 2” though.

The Note 5 has a single speaker on the underside of the device, the maximum volume of which we measured at 76.9 dB(A). This is not particularly loud, but the sound quality is fine. High tones are rather overbearing at maximum volume, but the speaker sings when the volume is turned down slightly. The speaker struggles with reproducing deep mid-tones, while we struggled to pick out individual instruments too. Overall though, the Note 5 has an impressive speaker for its price, albeit with a few caveats.

The Note 5 is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and Bluetooth 5.0. There are currently only a few headphones and speakers that take advantage of Bluetooth 5.0, but fortunately, the new standard is backwards compatible with all previous Bluetooth standards. The sound quality is good for both outputs. The Note 5 has an inbuilt equalizer to tweak the sound over headphones too, but you will need Xiaomi branded headphones to enable this feature.

Battery Life Power Consumption The Note 5 is a relatively inefficient device, with the big display, high screen brightness and the modern but powerful SoC all taking their toll on power consumption.

The Note 5 is relatively efficient when off and on standby, with our test device consuming 0.06 W and 0.2 W respectively. The Note 5 consumes more power than our comparison devices when the display is on though. The Note 5 is anywhere between 12% and 38% less efficient than our comparison devices overall. This is particularly true at maximum load, where our test device consumes 8.2 W. This is not only significantly higher than our comparison devices, but it is also 19% higher than the average of Snapdragon 636 powered devices that we have currently tested.

It is no surprise then that Xiaomi has incorporated aggressive background app management to keep power consumption under control. This degree of aggressiveness can lead to problems that need to run in the background though. We had to tweak the settings for Runtastic to work properly, for example.

Battery Life The Note 5 has a large 4,000 mAh battery, which helps our test device score impressive runtimes in our battery life tests despite the relatively high power consumption. Our test device lasted fourteen hours and thirty-two minutes in our Wi-Fi battery life test, during which we run a script that simulates the load required to render websites. This runtime is considerably longer than our comparison devices, thanks to the Note 5’s additional battery capacity. Our test device lasted thirty hours at idle, which indicates that the Note 5 should last for two working days with moderate use and even longer if you use infrequently use smartphones. Conversely, the Note 5 should last a full day if you use the device a lot, with our test device lasting four hours and eighteen minutes in our continuous stress test.

Xiaomi provides a 10-W quick charger in the box, which fully recharges the Note 5 in under two hours.

The Redmi Note 5 is the epitome of Xiaomi’s ethos of releasing affordable but high-performance devices and demonstrates why many are longing for a European wide launch of their devices. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is an affordable smartphone that has plenty of power, good battery life, fast 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, and a bright and high-contrast display for under €240 (~$277). The Note 5 has a good speaker too, while call quality is decent and the Quick Charge support is handy. The modern SoC gives the Note 5 relatively fast LTE speeds, Bluetooth 5.0 and should future proof it for the foreseeable future.

There are some drawbacks though. The color temperature and a blue tint to the display are not great, and neither is the relatively high power consumption despite the impressive battery life. MIUI employs aggressive app management to its detriment too. This can lead to problems with apps that need to run in the background, but it does help to reduce power consumption and lengthen the battery life. The camera is the only area where the Note 5 is clearly a mid-range device, but photos are adequate overall. Surface temperatures are ok too, albeit they could be better under load.

Earbuds 2 Lite Review: Honor’s Best Value to Date

Honor’s latest product is the Earbuds 2 Lite in-ear wireless buds. Though they look similar to Apple’s AirPods, they are far less expensive and have longer battery life. On August 7, the earbuds will be available in the United Kingdom. Here’s a full review to help you figure out if they’re perfect for you.

Price & Availability

The buds are now only available in Europe, with a price of €69.90. They went on sale on the Honor website and Amazon UK on August 7th and became available worldwide on August 5th.

These buds are Honor’s best value to date, and in comparison to competitors, they’re pretty competitive. If you’re looking for something similar, the OnePlus Buds Z costs around the same but has an IP55 rating, but with limited touch controls.

Specs & Features

The Honor EarBuds 2 Lite supports AAC and SBC and uses Bluetooth 5.2. The latter is a disappointment, as aptX would have greatly improved sound quality for Android users.

One for ANC, one for phone calls, and one for the Awareness Mode, each bud features two microphones. Each bud is equipped with a 55mAh lithium-ion battery. The enclosure includes a 410mAh battery. The Earbuds 2 Lite, according to Honor, may last up to 32 hours if you use the case in between uses and don’t utilize ANC or Awareness Mode all the time.

They also charge quickly: a full charge takes around an hour for the bud and an hour and a half for the charging case and a ten-minute charge can provide up to four hours of use.

There’s also wear detection, which means that when you take an earbud out, your media will pause. This is a useful feature because it eliminates the need to manually do this – albeit it may be inconvenient if you want to take one bud in and out repeatedly. However, you can turn it off in the AI Life app.

Design

The Honor Earbuds 2 Lite includes a rectangular casing with a USB-C connector on the bottom and a physical key on the side that is used to connect to new devices. There is no wireless charging, as expected, but Honor includes a 5V/3A cable in the retail package.

Taking the buds out of the casing reveals that they resemble the Huawei Freebuds 4i, despite the fact that the two firms are no longer affiliated, at least in principle. After additional study, we discovered that they are not simply lookalikes, but identical to the millimeter.

The way the earbuds fit into the casing isn’t as good as it could be. Both firms employ a bottom-mounted magnet to guide the stem into its slot, but Honor’s placement feels strange, with the bud facing the user and the stem being further away.

Because there is no easy way to transfer the bud from the ear into the case with a single motion of the hand, it would require a lot of practice and muscle memory to adapt.

At the very least, the Earbuds 2 Lite are incredibly comfortable in the ear when used with the appropriate rubber tips. They contain a touch sensor on the outside for gestures, as well as plenty of microphones to guarantee that calls are smooth on both ends.

The inward-facing microphone also has a sensor that recognizes when one of the buds is removed and pauses music or video.

Sound Quality

The buds include 10mm ‘customized’ drivers, but when using Android phones or other devices, there is no support for the higher-quality aptX codec. Because there is no license charge for Apple devices, AAC is used instead of aptX, making the Earbuds 2 Lite less expensive.

On the other side, the sound quality is superb. Even when the volume is turned down, the highs, lows, and mids are all well balanced. The bass levels, for example, aren’t quite as strong and effective as on the Sony WF-XB700. Listening to electronic or rock music, on the other hand, is still enjoyable.

Active noise cancellation is one of the standout features and one that you wouldn’t anticipate at this price. It’s also extremely effective. When ANC is turned on, there is a perceptible difference when strolling down a busy road. The background noise has been subdued to the point where you feel completely immersed in what you’re listening to. The silicone tips block a lot of noise, so there’s already a lot of noise isolation.

You can totally off the ANC, and there’s also an Awareness Mode that activates microphones on the outsides of the buds to allow noise to pass through. This allows you to carry on a discussion without having to remove your earphones, such as when getting coffee.

If you’re listening to anything like a podcast, this works fairly well. However, if you’re listening to music, keep the volume below 50% so you can hear what others are saying. Of course, the ideal approach is to pause whatever you’re listening to.

The buds are compatible with Huawei’s AI Life app, according to the instructions, but still pairing them with it took longer than usual. There was no option to change the EQ or any other settings as a result. This has been seen before with early samples, and you should be able to use them with the app by the time they launch.

The microphones function in unison with a fancy-sounding DNN (Deep Neutral Network) and Dual Anti-Wind Technology. This is supposed to improve the quality of voice calls even while it’s raining outside.

Battery

The battery is another excellent point of the Earbuds 2 Lite. Each bud has a 55 mAh battery, with the case adding another 410 mAh. The honor determines a total battery life of 32 hours of listening time. Of course, this does not account for the time it takes for the buds to recharge while in this situation. The buds charge quickly, and the case may charge quickly as well, assuming the cable is paired with the suitable adaptor.

Turning on the ANC and boosting the volume will reduce battery life, but even with everything turned on, we still get over 4 hours of auditory enjoyment. Recharging is also quick; based on our experience and testing many TWS earbuds, we recommend charging the case anytime you have a chance, rather than consuming the entire battery life and then struggling to find an outlet.

Verdict

If you don’t want to spend the money on ANC, the Honor EarBuds 2 Lite is a good option for genuinely wireless earphones. The music quality is excellent, the headphones are easy to use, and the battery life is exceptional – far exceeding that of many flagship models. The absence of an IP rating, relatively sensitive touch controls, and lack of compatibility for aptX or HD codecs are the only drawbacks. However, at such a low cost, these flaws can be overlooked.

Apple Watch Series 6 in Review: Improved Health Metrics Thanks to watchOS 7 and New Sensor

Case and Connectivity – Begone, Force Touch

As can be seen on our title photo above with a 2015 Apple Watch for comparison, the Watch’s form factor remained unchanged and current sizes are identical to last year’s model. The new eye-catching features are new colors, in particular the new blue and red aluminum case, and the new solo loop bands.

As before the aluminum models feature Ion-X glass while the stainless steel and titanium models come with Sapphire glass instead. The LPTO OLED that was first introduced with the Watch Series 4 remains well usable in sunlight. According to Apple, its Always-On Display’s maximum brightness has been improved by 2.5x over the Watch Series 5 , which is supposed to be beneficial mostly to those who cannot raise their arm during their workout for whatever reason. We were particularly impressed by how fast the new device switched between the two modes. Even with Always-On Display enabled activating the full display when lifting your arm takes a split second.

The rear side has been updated to include the new sensor. The new sensor array is comprised of a crystal with four photo diodes and four green/red/infrared LED clusters. This array now allows for estimating your blood oxygen level as well as measuring and recording your heart rate, your heart rhythm, and recognize when you’re asleep. The latter does not require the new sensor and is thus available on all models that can be updated to watchOS 7, namely Series 3 and newer.

However, updating to watchOS on previous Apple Watch models comes at a price. The latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system no longer supports Force Touch, which in previous versions was used to access context menus or customize the currently installed watch faces. Instead, this way of input was now partly replaced with a long touch without applying extra force. The Apple Watch Series 6 lacks the Force Touch gasket that was still present on previous models, and on all older devices its readings are simply ignored.

The Apple Watch Series 6 supports GPS and is ISO 22810:2010 certified against ingress of water up to 50 m. The new Wi-Fi chip now also supports 5 GHz bands. Furthermore, the watch comes with NFC for Apple Pay as well as a speaker and microphone for Siri and phone calls. As before, an LTE model with eSIM support is available optionally at a premium.

Setup and Handling

Setting up an Apple Watch cannot be done with an Android smartphone as it requires a compatible iPhone. However, thanks to watchOS 7’s new family setup feature this no longer needs to be your own iPhone. Instead, you can now use any compatible iPhone to setup an Apple Watch for example for your children, senior parents, or others that don’t even own an iPhone. The Watch app required for pairing and setting up the Apple Watch is preloaded on any iPhone by default and is capable of managing multiple watches if necessary.

The Watch itself comes with numerous preloaded applications, such as for example a remote-control application for the iPhone’s camera. One of the Apple Watch’s largest benefits is its App Store ecosystem with a large variety of third-party applications. If an iPhone app also happens to support the Apple Watch it is automatically installed on a compatible Watch as well, as long as this feature remains enabled.

The watch faces can be customized either via the Watch app on the iPhone or on the watch itself. Changing between the various installed watch faces can be achieved with horizontal swipes across the screen. The digital crown is used for scrolling through settings menus or zooming in the Photos app. The single button can be used to either display the Dock, which contains all recently used applications, or a customizable list of favorite apps.

This all isn’t new by any means. Its ease of use is one of the basic principles defining the Apple Watch, as is the full integration of multiple Apple products logged in with the same Apple ID with one another. For example, should Siri respond to one of your questions with a search and website suggestion you can open this website on your Mac thanks to Handoff. Furthermore, all Siri suggestions and open websites are synchronized with your Mac to be found in Safari’s history. In addition, you can also use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac. Once setup the watch will vibrate and play a sound reminiscent to that of a vault opening every time it unlocks your Mac. A nice touch for sure.

Notifications and Telephony

By default, the Apple Watch mirrors your iPhone’s notification settings, which can be later customized and adjusted to your liking. WhatsApp messages will display emojis but only a blurry preview of photos. Replies can contain either predefined blocks of text, emojis, a dictated message, or a digitized message with each letter scribbled onto the watch’s display. New messages can only be sent out as text, not as WhatsApp message. This holds true for all other messengers that don’t offer a native Apple Watch app.

You can take a phone call directly from the watch on your wrist, and you can also make phone calls through either your contacts, your recents, or a dialpad. While the LTE model is capable of operating independently of the iPhone it is paired to the GPS/Wi-Fi model requires the iPhone to remain close-by.

Health and Fitness – Finally with SpO2 Sensor

Fitness buffs love the Apple Watch, and the health sector was impressed by the Apple Watch Series 4’s ECG feature. And while other OEMs seem to struggle with reliable ECG data – Samsung’s implementation, for example, was delayed repeatedly and remains unavailable in many countries, including Germany, to this day – an increasing number of wearables started featuring blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensors capable of detecting possible sleep apnea. Apple, on the other hand, only supported heart rate and frequency (ECG) metrics as well as an app for hearing health. With watchOS 7, a sleep tracker is now finally available for all supported Apple Watches (Series 3 and later), and the Apple Watch Series 6 finally supports blood oxygen saturation monitoring.

Heart Frequency, Heart Rate, and Oxygen Saturation

By default, the ECG app is not available on an Apple Watch. Instead, it must be actively setup in the paired iPhone’s Health app where you can decide whether you want constant and automatic or manual heart rate and blood oxygen readings. Should the Watch detect atrial fibrillation, which is often linked to an increased risk of suffering a stroke, it will issue a warning.

Heart frequency measurements are very accurate. In our test, the Apple Watch was capable of accurately measuring our heart frequency both when idle and working out with increasing performance, and it reported values almost identical to that of a heart rate chest strap. When analyzing the workout data, we found almost identical data save for a single heartbeat.

On average, blood oxygen level data differed from that recorded by a certified pulse oximeter by just 1.5 % with a maximum of up to 3 %. Using the Blood Oxygen app on your watch you can start a manual reading of your blood oxygen levels. If needed the watch can automatically take readings several times a day and while asleep. The paired iPhone’s Health app will then graph that data over the course of days, weeks, or months.

Sleep Tracking

For the first time in the history of watchOS the new version 7 natively supports sleep tracking at night.
