prefacing this with I'm not necessarily punk, but I like customizing my clothes. and i wanna help other people find stuff for battle jackets! (and other stuff) I'm not the authority on this, but I still want to give my two cents!! also don't expect much more to this, my profile is pure cringe.

If anyone is starting out and I can help, I'd like too!!

The spike/stud dilemma

one of the biggest issues i've noticed is "where do I find studs/spikes without fast fashion??" which is totally fair. something like that shouldn't have to be a minefield. obviously if you buy from a small business that re-sells them from aliexpress you're still indirectly supporting aliexpress.

im sure there ARE slow fashion alternatives and if anyone knows some please let me know so I can add it!!

BUT here's what I'd recommend.

-goodwill bins, sometimes they have old clothes or broken belts, very rare though. also any thrift store or reclaimed craft store.

-Local businesses, sex shops

-metal paper fasteners

-borrowing. it's inevitable, I know. JOANNs is definitely the best selection imo, but Hobby Lobby is better to steal from. Because They are Terrible. Michael's is OK but less selection usually. They use peal off tags usually which are easy to remove.

-also if you're feeling extra insane, hot topic uses mainly ink tags, which can be removed with heat (look up tutorials on) or just cut off a stud/spike belt. their studs are pretty easy to remove. same with bracelets, they break a lot. ofc it depends on the place whether they use beep beep tags.

-ask people for broken shit!

TEXTILES (the easy part)

-fabric samples are easy to find for free online. get whatever colors you want, i usually stick to black, white, grey and 1-3 other colors. they're usually pretty small so order around until you find the right size. you want cotton and linen, usually upholstery if you're painting on them. if you're not or you're ok working with leather, leather is easy to find too. A lot of companies mentioned how stretchy your material is something not stretchy most cases.

-FACEBOOK!! A.K.A the boomer method. This is where I got almost all of mine!! I recommend downloading FREEBIE as well! I got mine thru that, it links to facebook, nextdoor, and so on. Ofc you can pay for them- but you don't have to! I have lifetime supply of textiles basically bc of this. A lot of people get them for hobbies or work.

-the goodwill bins!!!! you can absolutely find fabric there, it's pretty common actually

-you don't need to steal this tbh it's easy to find second hand and less wasteful

PAINTING

-Facebook, goodwill, or reclaimed/used craft stores if you have them

-borrowing (same places)

-use something like Painter Eye (AR tracing app) and draw out any complex band logos etc.

-you can also use sharpies or whatever nobody's stopping you

Other stuff

-one of the best ways to find stuff is just GO FOR A WALK! Find little shiny objects!

-hardware stores are good so are army surplus

Hi! I was wondering if u had any opinions about the colors Morwen would wear? I was thinking along the palette of the Hadorian heraldic device, + maybe black bc mourning (although what constitutes mourning-wear in Beleriand is another can of worms I suppose lol), but maybe she would want to incorporate Beorian colors/something else entirely? Sorry for the ramble!

For Hadorian clothing, I imagine they use wool, imported flax, occasional imported cotton, and leather. Their communities are agricultural based and men and women often wear smock like outfits on most working days. Noblewomen and those with more resources wear more cotton and dresses and skirts are common.

Dyes are mostly plant based and done by individual families with the exception of more expensive or elaborate pieces that will be made by artisans. Yellow and light green are common colors because they can be easily produced from dyers woad which grows abundantly in Hithlum. Blue can also be produced from woad though the process is somewhat more difficult and so is rarer in Hadorian dress.

General sewing and fabric work is done by both men and women while embroidery and decorative sewing is more gendered.

Flower patterns are a common Hadorian motif on clothes and architecture and purely abstract patterns are rare on clothes. You will often see mostly plain clothing but with designs of patterns around the hem, collars and for those with more time and resources, along the seam going down the side.

The Bëorians used more wool from alpaca and sheep as well as imported flax and occasionally nettles.

Color is very important in ceremonial clothing and dyeing is a significant trade among the Bëorians

Red madder root, woad, dyer’s croton, common marigold, dayflower, yellow chamomile and black mulberry are among some plants valued for dyes. Earthen and stone pigments are also used.

Red madder dyes are of particular significance to the Bëorians. The deep red color is used to dye sashes and headwear that is traditionally worn during formal occasions.

As the climate of Hithlum is different from Ladros, red madder could no longer be used after the Bragollach among Bëorian refugees. The deep red it yields is also considerably less common among Hadorian clothing and customs.

Many Bëorians in Hithlum had to relearn trades they had been doing their entire lives because of the differences in materials, processes and customs. As most had come with nothing, their clothing and possessions having been destroyed during the sudden flame, this was extremely disheartening and yet another aspect of the devastating losses of culture and customs.

I agree that Morwen would make point to wear Bëorian colors. The colors Morwen wears depends on when in her life. In Hithlum, in addition to Bëorians colors, I headcanon she often wore muted colors, and earthen ones, even before Húrin's loss.

I do think she would wear the Hadorian colors on some ceremonial occasions. She has a strong sense of honor and duty and although I think she is fiercely loyal to the customs and culture she grew up in, she is also loyal to Húrin.

Abstract patterns, some with cultural meeting, some without, are much more common in Bëorian clothing than in Hadorian ones. Geographic patterns are some of the most common and storytelling through these is a practice. Some of these patterns are carried over by refugees but many are lost.

I specifically headcanon that Morwen refused to use Hadorian customs whenever possible. The clothing she made, especially before her marriage, used Bëorian design and custom to the extent that it could.

I have the headcanon that Bëorian women who are married wear specific braids to designate marriage. In the event of widowhood, one of the braids is cut, the other kept. I go back and forth on if Morwen cut one of her braids, as she did believe Húrin to be alive. I think other aspects of mourning she was not able to engage in due to lack of resources during the occupation.

Finally a fabric write up for all cosplayers and costume enthusiasts! A special thank you to Balladofspngbirds for the behind the scenes photos of Tom and Ashley in Germany and Panem Propaganda for the up close photos of Coryo’s uniform from the Vegas exhibit! 

The Academy uniforms are a bright red gabardine twill fabric. The fabric content can be wool, polyester, or a blend of the aforementioned fabrics. The actual screen used costumes are made from pure wool. My Clemensia is specifically 100% poly gabardine fabric that I got on Goldhawk Road in London. 

You may be asking yourself: what the heck is that fabric on the front of the blazer that has the buttons? Good question readers! I had the same thought when I found a good texture match, it looks like a polyester pique fabric! The color should be as close to the main gabardine for the blazer , pants, and skirt. The buttons for the blazer have the Capitol Emblem on them and have been custom made specifically for the production of TBOSBAS. Unless a metal caster is willing to make and sell replicas then a standard brass metal button with some kind of bird emblem will do. 

The shirt is a standard button up blouse or dress shirt made of a cotton poly shirting fabric in a pale blue/gray color. 

Note: one of the Academy promoters was kind enough to show me that the skirt is in fact a separate garment from the pants and can be attached to the pants waistband with a hook. The singular welt pockets on the blazer are also only for decoration.

How to choose your boat mattress

Most times, when I am about to go on a boat voyage, I feel tempted to pull off my mattress from home into the boats. Why? Most of the beddings' boat-makers' install in boats visit site here are just very uncomfortable to sleep on, most especially in turbulent conditions.

Although boat builders are improving on the beddings they install in boats; most boat beddings still give about the same comfort as a mere foam placed over a wooden material base. In effect, these beddings are only useful for short term boat cruise/voyage.

fat clothes bullshit

As it is a fact universally known that once you hit double-digit sizes, clothing that isn’t fugly, uncomfortable, or both becomes hard to find on almost a logarithmic scale, I’ve always got an eye out for somewhere that doesn’t appear to hate its customers in order to spend my fat fashion dollar.

Most recently, I succumbed to the Universal Standard hype. The tl;dr: it is well-fitted decent quality basics for people of all sizes (from US size 00- 40). Every piece is available in every size -there aren’t different ‘plus’ styles - and most pieces come in a wide variety of colors.. It’s slightly more expensive than Torrid (about equivalent with Lane Bryant), and unlike either of those options it doesn’t look like 2003 threw up on it and died.

That said, when I say “basics” I do mean basic. There’s some pieces with construction interest to them like the Meridian asymmetric zip jackets, and there’s some tunics and dresses with interesting shapes, but for the most part it is very much wardrobe-staple type items in simple styles and almost zero prints/plaids/pattern of any kind, even just stripes.

In my opinion, that’s perfect because a) I have a deeply ambivalent relationship with girly shit, and b)  I’m a scarf/shawl/cowl knitter and a jewelry maker; solid colors are a great canvas for statement accessories. But if your jam is more high femme and print/detail interest than clean-lined bordering on gender neutral (a good amount of their clothing, although sized and tailored for AFAB, could certainly read nonbinary or agender depending on the pieces), you might find it uninspiring. However, you may still want to consider their pants and tees  as potential infrastructure to rotate more trendy/dainty pieces around if Torrid or LB is doing that for you now and you don’t love the (lack of) durability.

If any of that sounds like you would like to know more, more specific product reviews behind the readmore.

1) the T-rex/V-rex t-shirts are cotton/modal, soft but heavy enough that I didn’t get bra lines, the colors looked pretty faithful to how they were on screen (enough that I was able to match a pair of pants from another vendor and was still happy when able to physically put the two together) they’re neither baggy nor mad clingy/revealing, and they don’t feel like the hems will be unraveling and holes growing around the stitching after a season. The V of the v-neck does what it needs to do without showing bra; the crew neck that I was ambivalent about getting (wanted the color but generally don’t like crew necks) is cut wide enough that it’s got a little style and doesn’t feel like it’s strangling a person. They’re both decently long enough to not ride up and expose your back when you bend over/long enough to tuck in if that’s how you roll (I am 5′7″ for reference). They feel a lot more quality than Torrid’s basic V-necks and come in a LOT more colors, as long as they wash decently these are worth getting. Keep your eye out for sales.

2) the liquid jersey Genevette top - the fabric is amazing, it’s a slinky rayon that for something as soft as it is just falls straight down without sticking weirdly to any lumps, bumps or bulges. It’s an asymmetrical piece that on me at least falls long enough to be a good length to wear with leggings (same place as on the skinnier model displaying it, kudos to the people who graded the pattern and actually knew what they were doing). I’m just praying I don’t dump coffee on it or something. Will definitely acquire more pieces in this fabric if it washes well.

3) The Meridian Zip jacket’s two-way zipper is actually metal and heavy. It’s almost pure cotton and more structured than I was expecting; if you are looking for “cozy” this isn’t it. It is however warm, easy to wear and fashion enough to get away with in a business casual environment iif like me, sweaters make you itchy and blazers are annoyingly constricting and sweaty. (the autistic person’s go-to office layering piece!) Unfortunately, they’re out of a lot of colors right now after their Mystery Box event. II hope they restock or add more, I would definitely buy another one in the steel or navy if they had it in my size.

4) The sweats I got as a “mystery bonus” item I think they are the Hathaway Jersey Jogger - annoyingly, any “mystery” items you get still don’t have what product they are on the tags when you get them. This is dumb, because how are you supposed to order them again if you liked them? Anyway, they are heavy and soft - not fuzzy, but very drapey/silky unlike the Meridian jacket. They DO have pockets and DON’T have a drawstring, which are exactly what I’m looking for in lounge pants, hooray! I don’t know that I would have paid upfront what these cost for something that’s around-the-house or errand pants, but I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for sales.

5) Universal Standard’s claim to fame are their jeans. To get a taste without a huge price commitment, I got a mystery box with some. I think the ones I ended up with are the Seine skinny midrise in dark wash (again, irritatingly, they are not labeled wth a product name because mystery box.) They are true to size (US gives both size measurements and individual product dimension measurements which is super nice), the waistband is not pinchy and nor does it gap in the back, pockets your whole hand fits in and they don’t creep if you’re getting up and down a lot (LOOKING AT YOU TORRID). The real test of jeans of course is how they come out of their first wash, but they’re a win on try-on and if they wash well, I’d be willing to buy at full price. It gives me some more confidence to try their work pants too, now that I have more faith that their sizing is actually as described.

Well I hand made a plushie and I'm proud of myself.

When Jaiden Animations uploaded her video reviewing gen 5 pokemon plushies, I wondered what Drifloons official plush looked like. Looking it up, it was kinda disappointing. There were parts I thought I'd change if I made it myself...

Then I thought, why don't I make it myself! So I stopped studying for my exam and proceeded to plan out the designs. However, I'm no expert by any means. My credentials were essentially:

Learned how to sew a quilt in grade 11.

Quick fixes in clothes or toys.

Lots of videos of doll customizations and a few cosplay tutorials I've seen on YouTube.

So, I set my expectations low and kept my self-confidence high. My margin of error for the drifloon plush was going to be huge, so regardless of the end result, I'll be happy.

Above are some of the first drafts of templates I used. The seem-lines excess grew as I learned that more is better. The circular tag for the bottom of Drifloon I had to remake a few times, so it was big enough with the final product. The arms I originally thought to make with fabrics, but once realizing it would look like shoelaces, I challenged myself to use rope.

I also had no plan for the cloud. I did know I wanted to use fabric rather than it to be pure fluff like the official design. I ended up just stuffing and stretching fabric into a sphere shape and sewing it together, hiding all the raw edges.

When I went to buy the material, I didn't buy plush and soft materials. If I remade the plush, I probably would make the cloud part fluffy, but since drifloon is a balloon, the smooth pillow-like sheets (Linen, I think) worked fine.

Gotta love the stitch work of my first attempt. I probably used a total of four stitch methods. One was stitched the machine, then handstitched the rest since I realized it was crazy to machine stitch something so small. Two of the stitches I probably made up. I stuffed the pads, and the end result is smooth enough, and I love each little flaw. The mistakes also helped me understand how to approach the rest of the body.

One, two, skip a few, I stitched 5 oval patterns together to make the body. I then bought an embroidery hoop to make the eyes. I thought of doing an outline for the mouth but settled for machine stitching.

This poor baby wasn't properly stuffed. Originally, I planned on using old stuffing, but then I bought cotton to stuff it properly. I accidentally ripped the material and thought I fixed it, but after stuffing it I realized he had a Dwane Johnson eyebrow. Luckily, with new stuffing, it's less noticeable, kind of.

Above is the finished product immediately after I finished! Ignore the calendar it was actually June. He can sit without rolling and the colours look great together! It wasn't until recently when the weather was beautiful and I took him outside for a photo shoot!

While there was lots of mistakes, I had lots of fun learning. I love my shiny baby who was inspired by a shiny I caught in Pokemon Scarlet, my first non-guaranteed shiny in a main game! Her ingame name is Aurora, but I've been calling the plush a he, so do with that info as you will.

This project was really fun for me, and it all started by just wanting to do it myself. I hope this encourages you to just make something you've been holding out on doing. You may make mistakes like I did, but you may also finish with a final product that YOU made! What's cooler than that?

Atticus is all set!

Atticus is made of custom dyed minky, stiff felt, the tiniest bit of mochi minky. The clothing is made of cotton fabrics, metal studs, plastic chains, stiff felt and vinyl. They stand at about under 19 inches from the top of the head to the bottoms of the feet. the face, paws and chest are machine embroidered and appliqued. the clothing is removable and there is armature in this plush. The spotted detailing on the pants are painted on. The patches are tacked down with heat-n-bond-- the stitch detailing are purely decorative. The vest detailing is heat-n-bond and machine stitched on. The wristband is attached with hook-and-loop; the buckle is stiff felt. The spikes and buttons on this plush are metal findings.

OH BOY! This little one took a little longer than expected to finish. 

The base body is modified from Jian Min’s base body-- the biggest difference is elongating some of the limbs and giving Atticus is slimmer build. 

Dyeing fabric was interesting... oddly, my purple dyes were refusing to stick to the fabric I picked out. I at least got a nice purple-ish blue hue to it. :) The accent color was unfortunately redyed a few times for coming out too dark and purple. ^^; 

Armature turned out to be a struggle to find-- i ended up having to go to my backup shop for the size I needed, but on the brightside, I have more of the size i use coming early next year, haha!

So the claws for Jian Min was a small struggle, so I went for a different route. I ultimately decided to use a strong fabric adhesive to attach them all. I do appreciate the tidier look of the stiff felt, instead of minky-- though they are dust magnets! I did also decide to glue the claws flat on the feet since the flaws on Jian Min sometimes got weirdly distorted when posing. ^^;

NOW THE CLOTHES. PHEW! So patterning wasn’t difficult at all-- I’ve been getting more comfortable doing it. :) Detailing on the other hand... turned into a wild goose chase! The findings, specifically the spikes were difficult to source within the US-- mainly for the size that I needed. I ended up reordering the spikes for both the vest and wristband. But now I have some cool sets of spikes for future projects. :) The buttons were leftover from past commissions, so no issues there! ^u ^

The detailing on the pants were easy! But sourcing the chain was another chase! I was desperately looking for a metal chain(red) but stumbled upon this adorable little red chain! Took a while to arrive, but wow, it is too cute!

The vest detailing on the other hand... For reference to anyone who is using heat-n-bond-- if you aren’t aware, applying too much heat will destroy the bond. :( The red spotting detail was ironed on, but during finishing touches-- the bond on some parts were messed up. Back peddling a tiny bit-- the original plan was to order the fabric through spoonflower using their denim to achieve the lovely gradient that his vest had. I figured it would have a nice “real” feel to the clothing. But in the end, I didn’t have a swatch to see how thick or thin the fabric was and if it would be a good fit for doll clothing. I decided to stick with cotton fabrics. 

The NEWER idea was to paint on the gradients, but unfortunately the paint that I had access to was too watery and came out... not opaque? The finally idea was to make the spots solid.

it worked for the most part, but I wanted to avoid stitches details.

During the final ironing, I noticed large patches of the patches peeling off. A light ironing fixed most of them but the back design was... gone. x. x I ended up stitching the back to as a final decision. Also ended up using plenty or fray check!

Back to the spikes, they were literally screwed in place! To be honest there isn’t much else to say about them minus the small issue of placement. but easy in the end. :)
