Also, storing fresh juice makes it more vulnerable to bacteria so it’s best to drink it right away.

Some seeds, rind, and leaves of common fruits and vegetables should not be eaten! This will likely surprise you as much as it did me! The good news is that dogs have a higher tolerance for persin than other animals, but if you suspect your dog has accidentally ingested avocado, it’s still a good idea to call your vet and monitor his symptoms
Alcohol
Causes vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, breathing problems, coma and death
Unsurprisingly, alcohol has the same effect on dogs as people but a 20-lb dog will feel the effects of alcohol poisoning much more quickly than a 150-lb human

Unlike people, dogs do not need or crave variety in their meals each day and will happily eat the same thing day in and day out. They thrive on a consistent routine which includes their meal plan and feeding schedule.  We recommend working with your veterinarian to find a meal that gives your pup all his daily nutrients and will set him up to have a healthy, active lifestyle. However, there might be an occasion where it is appropriate and maybe even a good idea to feed your dog “people food” as a treat during training exercises or for the nutrients that whole, unprocessed foods provide.

Peanut Butter
Good source of protein and essential fats and vitamins
Serve only raw or naturally sweetened because artificial sweeteners are very toxic to dogs
Unseasoned Cooked Chicken (or Turkey)
Great source of protein that is naturally low-fat
Easily digestible and can be mixed with rice for dogs with irregular or irritable bowel symptoms
Be careful to remove meat from the bones as cooked chicken bones can easily splinter and become a choking hazard
Cheese
Good source of calcium and dogs will love this as a treat but should be only given as that and never a meal replacement as cheese has a very high-fat content
But the earlier warning about lactose intolerance still applies—so monitor your pet and be aware of signs of discomfort
Carrots
Help clean dogs’ teeth as they chew
High in fiber, vitamin A and naturally low-calorie
Salmon
Good source of omega 3 which promotes a healthy, shiny coat and supports immune systems
Pumpkin
Great for an upset stomach because it has both a high water content and high fiber content
A great source for beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A when digested
You can prepare a fresh pumpkin or serve the canned variety (we like the latter because it’s easily mixed into your dog’s regular meal for a little extra digestion help—make sure its 100% pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling which is loaded with sugar and spices that may not be dog-friendly)
Cooked Eggs
Boiled or cooked eggs are a great source of protein, essential amino acids, and fatty acids
They are famously easy on the stomach and can be a good thing to feed your dog when he’s not feeling well
Green Beans
Low calorie and high in fiber, iron and many other essential vitamins and minerals
Apple Slices (but remember the seeds & core contain cyanide)
Apple slices are high in fiber, vitamin A and vitamin C with the added bonus that the texture of the apple can help clean residue off their teeth and freshen their breath
Make sure to only feed slices because (as we mentioned above) the core and seeds contain cyanide and are highly toxic

Food Borne Illness
The CDC reports that produce is the leading cause of food poisoning in the US (although more hospitalizations are due to dairy products and more deaths are attributed to poultry). Produce with the greatest risk are melons (the rough skin traps bacteria and gets carried to the flesh when cut) and packaged pre-cut leafy greens.
The CDC and FDA recommend rinsing your produce in cold water, don’t buy pre-cut veggies and fruits, and grow your own sprouts. Washing with soap is not recommended. For easy guidelines see this article by the University of Maine.
Add a little vinegar for additional protection. A study published in the “Journal of Food Protection” found that washing apples with vinegar and water reduced bacteria significantly better than water alone. The premier food magazine, “Cook's Illustrated,” sponsored a similar experiment and found that vinegar killed approximately 98% of bacteria on the surface of fresh fruits and vegetables. But let’s put this in perspective I know folks who rarely rinse their produce and have never had a problem. I’m one of them! However, if you’re pregnant, or you're making juices or smoothies for your children – both have a greater risk of infection and illness - I’d surely rinse all produce. And every time I read something about the working conditions of huge farms that grow and harvest commercial foods, I start rinsing all my produce! Unlike packaged beverages which undergo pasteurization to eradicate harmful organisms, fresh juice can only be made less risky by rinsing your produce. Also, storing fresh juice makes it more vulnerable to bacteria so it’s best to drink it right away.
Toxic Substances
Some seeds, rind, and leaves of common fruits and vegetables should not be eaten! This will likely surprise you as much as it did me! The seeds of apples, peaches, apricots, cherries, and raspberries, as well as the leaves of carrots, rhubarb, parsnip, and Queen Anne’s Lace (wild carrot) contain toxic compounds, but the amounts are so minute as to be of no real concern.
The major compound is known as amygdalin which produces cyanide, but the amount is so small that your body easily neutralizes it. There are claims that amygdalin has positive uses including cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society reviews this claim in a thorough and balanced article, and for an alternative view click here. The bottom line is that you would have to eat handfuls of these seeds or pits AND DIGEST THEM to experience serious illness. The seeds and pits have a tough coating impervious to digestion by most mammals. Symptoms of amygdalin toxicity are severe stomach cramps, headache, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and seizures. However, if too many seeds were eaten and digested, one would likely vomit a few times and not develop any other symptoms. The rind of orange and grapefruit has a small amount of a toxic compound now used as an insecticide. Ingesting a small amount is absolutely safe for you and your pets, but several orange peels will definitely upset the stomach.
There is also mention of toxic substances in some sprouts. This is another one of those pieces of info that's interesting but of no real health concern. In the interest of awareness here's a brief review of toxins in sprouts. Lathyrogen is found in an inedible species of bean in the genus Lathyrus. Inedible so not a concern. Saponins are found in bean sprouts and are not harmful, though some claim this is so because outside of the body in test tube conditions saponins kill red blood cells. They are not only harmless in the body but extremely beneficial for lowering cholesterol, protecting against heart disease, and fighting certain cancers. Canavanine is a toxic compound found in alfalfa seeds. However, as with the toxin in apple seeds, it is so minute as not to be an issue. An adult would have to consume 14,000 milligrams of canavanine at one time to feel any toxic effects. A large helping of alfalfa sprouts gives you a few milligrams. Digestive Issues
A while we’re on the subject of stomach upset, certain fruits and veggies are so powerful that you may experience some stomach distress if you drink too much of them. Too many leafy greens or wheatgrass can do this. For others, too much beet will do the same.
For those with sensitive digestion, mixing raw fruits and veggies can do this. I mix them every day with no ill effect. Standard nutritional rules state that in generally fruits and veggies should be eaten separately, though certain fruits go well with certain vegetables. In fact certain mixes are highly recommended for juice fasting and dieting, and for fighting diseases. The most common ‘ill effect’ of mixing fruits and veggies is gas, because fruit digests faster and uses different digestive enzymes. Carrots and apples are considered exceptions – carrots go well with any fruit and apples go well with any veggie.
Nutritional Deficiency
This is a concern only for those who limit themselves to juice or smoothies alone for long periods, especially if you’re pregnant, a young person still growing, and women in and past menopause. You can get all necessary nutrients from fruits and vegetables, but special attention needs to be paid to nutritional requirements during long juice fasts and diets. The nutrients which need special attention are iron, protein, calcium, B12, zinc, and Omega 3 fatty acids. These are critical nutrients that are difficult but not impossible to get from a vegetarian, vegan, or all-juice diet.
Medical and Dental Issues
Grapefruit juice is contraindicated if you take certain medications. Talk to your physician or pharmacist if this is a concern.
If you have any thyroid issues, compounds in raw cruciferous vegetables can interfere with your treatment. Again talk with your physician because thyroid and other health problems can be effectively improved with certain fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous veggies include kale, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, cauliflower, turnips, arugula, Brussels sprouts, radishes, collard greens, kohlrabi, rutabaga, and watercress.
Another medical concern is diabetes. The old rule of thumb is that anyone who is diabetic should stay away from fruit and sweet veggies such as carrots, beets, etc. Recent research has overturned this with the discovery that many fruits and veggies have compounds that actually help regulate sugar levels better than cooked food. This is exciting news for diabetics so talk to your physician right away!
There is concern about the issue of fiber. Fresh juice separates 'pulp' from juice. The pulp is primarily insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber remains in the juice. Nonetheless, juice provides less fiber than the whole food unless one returns the pulp to the juice. For those who need more fiber in their diet, blended drinks (popularly known as 'smoothies') may be a better choice since they do not separate pulp from the juice. Pulp is also added calories so for weight loss, juice is a better choice.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation points out that compounds in dark leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.) can interfere with calcium absorption. They recommend that these rich foods be added to your juice recipes 2-3 times a week instead of every day.
Spinach is also high in oxalate, a compound that can lead to the formation of kidney stones. People with calcium oxalate kidney stones should avoid overdoing this veggie.
Don’t juice too many tomatoes or oranges if you have acid reflux since the high acid content can aggravate and even lead to acid reflux.
Finally, there is a greater risk of gum disease and tooth decay chiefly among children and teenagers whose diets are entirely vegetables and fruits (vegan and vegetarian) without proper attention to the nutrients mentioned above according to Dr. Ludwig Leibsohn of the Academy of General Dentistry. What Happens When You Eat Apple Seeds? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Many a grandmother has warned her grandkids against eating "poisonous" apple seeds. Perhaps you've had the experience of accidentally swallowing a few and wondering if you'd soon fall to the floor, gasping for breath. Then there are those individuals who've been eating apples whole — seeds and all — for decades with no ill effects. Many did not even know there were supposed "ill effects" to speak of. Are there? This is the question of the day, and, to answer it in a nutshell, or shall I say in an apple core, there's little to be afraid of. Apple Seeds Release Cyanide When Crushed Apple seeds contain amygdalin, a plant compound known as a cyanogenic glycoside. It's part of the seeds' chemical defenses, but when apple seeds are chewed or crushed and metabolized, the amygdalin turns into hydrogen cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide, in turn, is a poisonous substance that prevents your cells from using oxygen properly, leading to death within minutes at high-enough exposure levels. It's perhaps most known for its use as a chemical warfare agent by the Germans during World War II, but it was also reportedly used during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, also as a chemical weapon.1 Apple seeds aren't the only food to contain cyanide precursors. Amygdalin is also found in apricot, peach and cherry pits, for instance, and much more (over 2,5000 plant species in all2). But consuming a few apple seeds is not the same thing as being exposed to straight hydrogen cyanide, and here's why: apple seeds have a protective coating that's resistant to digestion. If you've ever eaten whole apple seeds, you may have noticed that they pass through your body basically unharmed. The cyanide is only produced if the seeds are damaged (i.e., crushed or chewed), so swallowing a few seeds whole is likely to be of little consequence. It's one of mother nature's ingenious protections, as the seeds' ability to produce cyanide when crushed discourages animals from chewing them, thus allowing for the whole undamaged seeds to return to the Earth and grow new apples. You'd Have to Eat a Lot of Crushed Apple Seeds for Them to Be Dangerous While consuming the number of apple seeds in one apple (the average apple contains 5 seeds, according to the Washington State Apple Commission3) is not cause for alarm, it is possible to be harmed by apple seeds — if you crush them and consume a large enough quantity. Children and pets, due to their smaller size, may be at increased, though still infinitesimal, risk. To put things in perspective, the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) blog noted that cyanide toxicity resulting from unintentional ingestion of amygdalin-containing pits, such as cherry pits, is extremely rare in the U.S., explaining:4 "Realistically, the pits and seeds are more of a choking hazard than a poisoning risk. At least a couple of times a year here at IPC, we get called about a child who has ingested 10-20 cherry pits whole. These kids have done just fine and developed no symptoms at all. … Intentional large ingestions however, have resulted in toxicity, including a few cases of ingestion of 20 [to] 40 chewed apricot pits by adults, which resulted in cyanide toxicity but no fatalities." To look at it in more mathematical terms, 1 gram of apple seeds contains anywhere from 1 to 4 milligrams (mg) of amygdalin. If chewed, the same amount of apple seeds may turn into 0.06 to 0.24 mg of cyanide, with a lethal dose of cyanide from apricot kernels reported as being 0.5 to 3.5 mg/kg body weight.5,6 As Authority Nutrition noted, "The exact lethal dose of apple seeds varies widely. It depends on body weight, individual tolerance and the type of apple." Cyanide is believed to be the active cancer-toxic ingredient in Laetrile, also known as Amigdalina B-17 or vitamin B17 (although there is very little evidence it warrants classification as a vitamin). By 1978, it was estimated that more than 70,000 Americans had tried it — despite its being banned in the U.S. since 1963. Most people obtain Laetrile from Tijuana clinics, as the agent is still legal in Mexico.8 Some have also tried to make their own anti-cancer treatment by consuming crushed apricot seeds, which can be dangerous. New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's highly respected cancer scientist Kanematsu Sugiura found that Laetrile significantly reduced the spread of lung cancer in mice,9 but the cancer research center reportedly brushed positive Laetrile studies under the rug, bowing to politics and conflicts of interest. You're More Likely to Get Cyanide Poisoning From Cassava Than Apple Seeds Cassava is a tropical root plant used in Asia, Africa and South America because it's plentiful and inexpensive. It has some notable nutritional benefits, as does tapioca, a digestive-resistant starch that's extracted from this root. What cassava has to do with apple seeds is that they both contain cyanogenic glycosides, cassavas' being a different type than that found in apples. Cassava roots contain the toxic compound linamarin, which converts to hydrogen cyanide. Improper cooking of cassava root is associated with cyanide poisoning, which can cause symptoms of vomiting, nausea, dizziness, stomach pains, headache, irreversible paralysis from a disease called konzo10 and even death. Cassava should not be eaten raw, however, if the cassava are peeled and cooked, toxic substances are removed. It should be noted that the tapioca you buy at the store or prepare from a package does not contain harmful cyanide levels, so it's perfectly safe to eat. What's the Healthiest Part of an Apple? While the debate rages on over whether apples should be consumed whole—core, seeds and all — what's not controversial is the importance of eating the peel, where much of apples' antioxidant power is contained.11 Apple peels also contain ursolic acid, which may help prevent age-related and illness-related muscle wasting.12 Since you'll be eating the peel, look for organic apples, which will be free from pesticides and other chemicals. Apples are one of the most pesticide-contaminated fruits there is, so if you're planning to eat more apples, make them organic. In addition, a wealth of research suggests that eating apples may impact your health in a number of beneficial ways • Brain Health: Apples have been found to protect neuron cells against oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity and may play an important role in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease.13 • Stroke: Eating apples is linked to a decreased risk of stroke.14 • Diabetes: Three servings of apples (and other fruits, such as blueberries and grapes) is linked to a 7 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes.15 This may be due to their beneficial role in blood sugar regulation, as apples contain compounds that may:16 • Lessen absorption of glucose from your digestive tract • Stimulate beta cells in your pancreas to secrete insulin • Increase uptake of glucose from your blood by stimulating insulin receptors • Cancer: Apples have a number of properties that may help reduce the risk of cancer, including antimutagenic activity, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory mechanisms, antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing activity, as well as "novel mechanisms on epigenetic events and innate immunity." According to the journal Planta Medica:17 "Apple products have been shown to prevent skin, mammary and colon carcinogenesis in animal models. Epidemiological observations indicate that regular consumption of one or more apples a day may reduce the risk for lung and colon cancer." • Heart Disease: Eating apples is associated with a lower risk of death from heart disease, an association that's thought to be related to their content of antioxidant flavonoids.18 Why Else Should You Eat Apples? Apples contain a wealth of nutrients and antioxidants, including quercetin, which is known to fight cancer and prevent histamine release, the latter of which may be helpful against allergy symptoms. Interestingly, children born to women who eat apples during pregnancy are also less likely to have asthma at age 5.19 Further, according to the New York Fruit Quarterly:20 "Since apples are so high in antioxidants, it is no surprise that apples, specifically, are associated with a decreased risk of chronic disease. Three studies have specifically linked apple consumption with a decreased risk for cancer … [and] a study has shown that apple and pear consumption has been associated with a decreased risk of asthma. Apple consumption has also been associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease … [and] a reduced risk of Type II diabetes was associated with apple and berry consumption in another major Finnish study. In the laboratory, apples and the compounds in them have properties that may explain their effects in protecting against disease. Our lab has found that apples, and especially apple peels, have powerful antioxidant activity and can greatly inhibit the growth of liver cancer and colon cancer cells. Based on results from all of these studies, it appears that apples may play a significant role in reducing the risk of a wide variety of diseases." Despite their healthy attributes, apples are a relatively high-fructose fruit, with 9.5 grams in a medium-sized apple. They should, therefore, be consumed in moderation. In addition, apple juice will contain considerably more, which is why you're far better off eating apples in their whole — not juiced — form. As for consuming the seeds, as mentioned, the amount contained in your average apple is virtually harmless.
