Cyndi Lauper is an American music artist who is best known for her songs - She Bop, Heading West, Unconditional Love, Don’t Want to be Your Friend, and True Colors.

                Lauper is known for her retro image, during the 1980s she looked like a colourful canvas. She had orange and pink hair, neon eye shadow and wore clothing that possessed dots and stripes. She also wore numerous belts and necklaces - all at the same time. Teenagers adopted her look, Lauper said, ‘I loved the whole retro look, but I always liked the idea of making it my own, so I wore high heels and pedal pushers, which nobody was really wearing at the time. Then I would wear a vintage ‘40s top that didn’t quite go with my hair or anything for that matter. I would try anything.’

                Cynthia Lauper was born in Brooklyn, New York City, US into a Catholic family. She is of Swiss, German and Italian descent. She grew up listening to The Beatles and Judy Garland and began writing songs, singing and playing guitar from the age of 12. She was expelled from high school and ran away from home at 17, to escape her abusive stepfather. She moved to Canada with her dog Sparkle and supported herself working odd jobs. She sang with cover bands but didn’t want to continue singing cover songs. She worked in a band and then worked in retail and working as a waitress, however her manager sexually harassed her. She sang in local clubs, in 198 she signed a contract as a solo artist and released her first album She’s So Unusual (1983).

                Lauper was married in 1991 and has one child, she said that pregnancy ‘Oh, it’s awful you’re sick a lot, you can’t move around, your body changes. Every day you feel like you’re a new science experiment. Big large and very strange looking.’
