Another Psalter written in Church Slavonic, a Slavic language of the Southern Slavic language family. Today, this is used largely as a liturgical language, although at least 2 centuries ago, words from the language were commonly used alongside others, most notably, Russian.

Hello, thanks for your post. Yes, I will be more clear:
In some words, such as добрый, I would pronounce the “O”. But in other words, such as потому, the “O” appears to be unstressed.
Is there any reliable pattern that I can use to know when I should put stress on “O” and when it sounds more like “A”?
Also, the same for “E”. For example привет versus меня.
Is there any pattern, or do you just have to learn the way each word is pronounced on a case-by-case basis?
I hope this is clearer, please let me know if you need more clarification.
@deborahdeshoftim5779 Hi! Stress patterns in Russian can be complicated— could you phrase your question a little more specifically, please? Do you mean in surnames that end with -ev/-ov?

Daniela (A Polyglot Diary) teaching the Cyrillic Alphabet.
As a general rule of thumb, I always learn the alphabet of a language which does not use Latin letters. This has served me well when I studied a little Arabic, as well as Hebrew, Greek, and now Russian (which I study more regularly, along with Hebrew).
In the case of Russian, it helped greatly, having already learned the Greek alphabet and being able to read words in Greek. Many Russian letters are derived from Greek, since the origins of the Cyrillic alphabet come from Greek monks.

I am glad to have learned the Cyrillic alphabet, allowing me to access interesting videos in Russian, Serbian, and Bulgarian. I cannot understand the spoken language or much of the written language. But the Russians have some excellent Bach videos, including this 12 minute compilation of Bach playing his works, as he might have done during his life. This includes the marvellous Dorian Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (second piece), as well as the even greater Passacaglia and Fugue in D Minor. Enjoyable.
