Yes, I proudly am the nephew niece (@succulently-speaking, got emotional!) of a man who (as I said in a comment) bravely switched the railway levers of trains transporting people like you and me from Czernowitz to Dachau. The year was 1943: he was 25. His name was John. He was my grandfather's elder brother and he never asked anyone for anything in return.

This is the reason why I will never accept lectures from anyone about Israel. It's personal.

Ukrajna, Oroszország és az aktuális Mail Art

Két hír talált meg a mai napot; az egyik az ukrajnai Lvív (Monarchia idején Lemberg) városából érkezett, a másik pedig Moszkvából. Mindkét történet a küldeményművészettel, a Mail Art-tal kapcsolatos. A két hónapja Moszkvába küldött lap számomra egyszerre legkülönlegesebb és egyben a legtragikusabb azok között a Mail Art-os megmozdulások között, melyekhez az elmúlt években így vagy úgy közöm volt. A felhívásra beküldött művek rendeltetési címe nem más, mint egy börtön, melyben fogva tartják azt a 26 éves fiatal művészt és tanárt, Daniil Klyuka-t, aki meg mert firkálni egy újságnak nevezett orosz propaganda-kiadványt. A fiatalembert ezért a tettéért 20 éves börtönbüntetésre ítélte a putyini szörnyállam. A Mail Art projekt időtartamát ez a büntetési idő jelenti (sic!), tehát addig tart, addig mehetnek a művek, amig ez a fiú börtönben van. A projekt témája: portré Daniil-nak. A háttér és a teljes leírás itt olvasható. Ma értesített a projekt olasz kurátora, Nicola Bertoglio, hogy munkámat kézbesítették a moszkvai börtönben raboskodó Daniil számára. A másik aktuális ügy, hogy szintén ezen a napon jutott el hozzám egy számomra fontos ukrán művészeti projekt kiállításának a híre is. Lubomyr Tymkiv 'ARTISTAMP SHOW' című felhívására idén januárban küldtem el munkámat Lviv-be. A beérkezett művekből nyáron nyílt kiállítás, melyről most találtam a Колаж Арт Facebook-oldalán bejegyzést (a képek innen származnak). A miliő első látásra nagyon emlékeztet Galántai Gyuriék kapolcsi világára. Egyébként mindig terveztem, hogy elmegyek Lviv-be, Közép-Európai keleti végére, a Blum-ok (és Bloom-ok) hajdanvolt Monarchiájának Galícia nevű tartományába. Majd a háború után talán. Hisz Triesztnek, Lembergnek, Czernowitz-nak (stb.) egy a hangja… Ami a napjainkat illeti: tisztelettel, aggodalommal és szeretettel gondolok Közép- és Kelet-Európa azon alternatív és avantgárd művészeire, akik a szellemi szabadság és autonómia reményét is hitét tartják életben két orosz rakétatámadás között vagy épp egy moszkvai börtönben.

the fucking tragedy of modern jewish life in europe. it's heartwrenching. the land is haunted by the ghosts of those who were there before. the museums and memorials have replaced the living jews. it's like a giant graveyard, like invisible hollow ruins scattered all over the landscape, and everybody who is still there is going away to someplace else.
