Business setup in Dubai
Business setup in Dubai refers to the process of establishing a business entity within the city of Dubai, which is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai is a thriving business hub known for its strategic location, robust infrastructure, and business-friendly environment. Here is a detailed explanation of business setup in Dubai:
Mainland Business Setup: Mainland business setup allows businesses to operate within the local market of Dubai and the UAE. It requires partnering with a local Emirati sponsor or a local service agent, depending on the nature of the business activity. The sponsor holds a minority share (typically 51%) in the company, while the majority share can be owned by foreign investors.
Free Zone Business Setup: Free zones in Dubai are designated areas that offer attractive incentives and benefits to businesses. These include 100% foreign ownership, tax exemptions, full repatriation of profits, and simplified procedures. Each free zone in Dubai caters to specific industries or sectors, such as Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) for commodities trading, Dubai Internet City (DIC) for technology companies, and Dubai Media City (DMC) for media and advertising companies.
Offshore Business Setup: Dubai also offers offshore company formation through jurisdictions such as JAFZA Offshore and RAK Offshore. Offshore companies are not allowed to operate within the UAE market but are ideal for international business activities, asset holding, or as a vehicle for investment and wealth management. They provide privacy, tax advantages, and ease of administration.
Legal Structures: Dubai offers various legal structures for business setup, including Limited Liability Company (LLC), Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Branch of a Foreign Company, and more. The choice of legal structure depends on factors such as ownership requirements, liability considerations, and business objectives.
Licensing and Permits: Business setup in Dubai requires obtaining the necessary licenses and permits from the relevant authorities. This includes trade licenses, professional licenses, industrial licenses, and specialized permits based on the nature of the business activity. The requirements vary depending on the type of business and the jurisdiction in which it is established.
Office Space and Infrastructure: Businesses in Dubai need to secure suitable office space or facilities to operate. This can be done through leasing commercial spaces, utilizing shared office spaces, or renting virtual offices. Dubai offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, modern office buildings, and world-class amenities to support business operations.
Visa and Immigration Services: Business setup in Dubai includes visa and immigration services for company owners, employees, and their dependents. This involves obtaining residence permits, work permits, investor visas, and other necessary documents from the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
Compliance and Regulations: Businesses in Dubai must comply with local regulations, including financial reporting, tax obligations, labor laws, and industry-specific regulations. Compliance requirements vary based on the legal structure and the nature of the business activity. It is important to stay updated with the regulations and engage professional advisors to ensure ongoing compliance.
Dubai offers numerous advantages for businesses, including a strategic location that serves as a gateway to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, a robust infrastructure, a diverse and multicultural workforce, political stability, and a supportive business ecosystem. However, navigating the business setup process in Dubai can be complex, and it is advisable to seek the assistance of experienced business setup consultants who can guide you through the legal requirements, procedures, and best practices to ensure a successful and compliant business establishment.

How to Register a Business in Dubai Free Zones: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2024
Tumblr media
Dubai has established itself as one of the world’s leading business hubs, offering a wide range of opportunities for foreign investors and entrepreneurs. One of the most attractive aspects of setting up a company in Dubai is the Dubai Free Zones, which provide numerous benefits such as 100% foreign ownership, zero taxes, and full repatriation of profits. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll take you through the process of registering a business in Dubai Free Zones in 2024, outlining the steps, benefits, and key factors to consider.
What Are Dubai Free Zones?
Dubai Free Zones are designated areas where businesses can operate with a high degree of autonomy and enjoy various financial incentives. They were created to attract foreign investment by allowing entrepreneurs to establish their companies without needing a local partner, which is a requirement in many other parts of the UAE. There are over 30 free zones in Dubai, each tailored to different industries, including technology, healthcare, media, and logistics.
Some of the most popular Dubai Free Zones include:
Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC)
Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA)
Dubai Internet City (DIC)
Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC)
Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA)
Key Benefits of Setting Up a Business in Dubai Free Zones
Registering a business in a Dubai Free Zone offers many advantages, making it an attractive option for foreign investors. Here are some of the key benefits:
100% Foreign Ownership: Unlike mainland companies, businesses in free zones can be entirely owned by foreign nationals.
Low Corporate and Zero Personal Taxes: Free zone companies are exempt from corporate taxes up to a threshold set by the federal tax authority and 9% above the threshold and personal income taxes.
Full Repatriation of Profits: Free zone businesses can repatriate 100% of their profits and capital without any restrictions.
No Import or Export Duties: Goods brought into or exported from free zones are exempt from customs duties, reducing the cost of doing business.
Industry-Specific Support: Many free zones cater to specific industries, offering tailored infrastructure and support services.
Fast and Easy Business Setup: The process of company formation in free zones is typically faster and simpler than setting up a business in mainland Dubai.
Types of Companies in Dubai Free Zones
There are two main types of companies you can establish in Dubai Free Zones:
1. Free Zone Establishment (FZE)
A Free Zone Establishment (FZE) is a single-owner entity, making it ideal for solo entrepreneurs or investors looking to own 100% of their business. FZEs are governed by the rules and regulations of the specific free zone in which they are registered.
2. Free Zone Company (FZC)
A Free Zone Company (FZC) is a multi-shareholder entity, meaning it can have more than one owner. This is a good option for partnerships or businesses with multiple investors.
Both types of entities offer the same benefits, but the choice depends on whether you plan to operate alone or with partners.
Step-by-Step Process for Registering a Business in Dubai Free Zones
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register a business in a Dubai Free Zone in 2024:
Step 1: Choose the Right Free Zone
Selecting the right free zone is crucial to the success of your business. Each free zone in Dubai is designed to support specific industries, so it’s important to choose one that aligns with your business activities. For example, if you are starting a media company, Dubai Media City might be the best option, while a logistics company may prefer Jebel Ali Free Zone.
Step 2: Decide on a Business Activity
Once you’ve chosen the free zone, you need to select the business activities your company will engage in. Free zones often have specific lists of permitted activities, so ensure your business falls within the allowed scope. Common activities include:
Trading
Consultancy
Manufacturing
Technology services
Logistics and warehousing
Step 3: Determine Your Legal Structure
Decide whether you want to register as a Free Zone Establishment (FZE) or a Free Zone Company (FZC). The choice depends on whether you are operating as a solo entity or have multiple shareholders.
Step 4: Submit Your Application
Once you’ve decided on your business activity and legal structure, the next step is to submit your application to the free zone authority. This involves filling out the relevant forms and providing the required documentation, such as:
A copy of your passport
Proof of your residence visa (if applicable)
A detailed business plan
Proof of share capital (if required)
Step 5: Obtain Approvals
After submitting your application, you may need to obtain approval from relevant authorities within the free zone. For some business activities, you may also need external approvals from the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) or other regulatory bodies.
Step 6: Sign the Lease Agreement
Free zones require businesses to have a physical office or warehouse space. After your business is approved, you’ll need to sign a lease agreement for office space within the free zone. Some free zones offer flexi-desk options for small businesses, allowing them to rent shared office spaces at a lower cost.
Step 7: Apply for Visas
Once your business is registered, you can apply for residency visas for yourself, your employees, and family members. The number of visas you can sponsor depends on the size of your office space and the type of business you have.
Step 8: Open a Corporate Bank Account
After your business is officially registered, the final step is to open a corporate bank account in Dubai. Most banks require proof of company registration, a business plan, and identification documents. Popular banks for free zone businesses include Emirates NBD, Mashreq Bank, and HSBC.
Costs of Setting Up a Business in Dubai Free Zones
The cost of registering a business in a Dubai Free Zone can vary significantly depending on the free zone and type of business. Some of the main costs to consider include:
License fees: These fees cover the cost of your business license and vary by free zone.
Office space: Free zones require businesses to rent office space, with costs depending on the size and location of the office.
Visa fees: Visa costs for employees and dependents should also be factored into your budget.
Miscellaneous fees: Additional fees may include company registration, document attestation, and external approvals.
On average, you can expect to pay between AED 15,000 to AED 50,000 to set up a business in a Dubai Free Zone, depending on the scope and scale of your operations.
Registering a business in a Dubai Free Zone in 2024 is an excellent opportunity for foreign investors looking to take advantage of Dubai’s favourable business environment. With the ability to own 100% of your company, enjoy zero taxes, and access world-class infrastructure, Dubai Free Zones offer a unique gateway to success in the global marketplace. Your Ultimate Guide to Freezone Business Setup in Dubai
Dubai, the gleaming jewel of the UAE, has long been a beacon for entrepreneurs seeking to establish their businesses in a dynamic and tax-friendly environment. Among the various options available for setting up a business in Dubai, freezones stand out as particularly attractive for their streamlined processes, favorable regulations, and enticing incentives. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the intricacies of freezone business setup in Dubai, offering invaluable insights and tips to help you embark on your entrepreneurial journey with confidence.
Tumblr media
Understanding Freezones: Dubai boasts numerous freezones, each catering to specific industries and business activities. Freezones are designated areas where foreign investors can establish 100% owned businesses with minimal bureaucratic hurdles. These zones offer strategic advantages such as full repatriation of profits, exemption from import and export duties, and no corporate or income taxes for a specified period.
Choosing the Right Freezone: The first step in your freezone business setup journey is selecting the most suitable freezone for your enterprise. Consider factors such as your business activity, target market, and budget when making this decision. Some of the popular freezones in Dubai include Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), and Dubai Internet City (DIC), each catering to different sectors such as technology, logistics, finance, and media.
Legal Structure and Licensing: Once you've chosen a freezone, the next step is determining the legal structure of your business and obtaining the necessary licenses. Freezones typically offer various types of licenses, including trading, industrial, service, and professional licenses, depending on the nature of your business. Additionally, you may need to decide between setting up a Free Zone Establishment (FZE), Free Zone Company (FZCO), or a branch office, each with its own set of requirements and benefits.
Documentation and Registration: Freezone business setup involves completing a series of documentation and registration procedures. This typically includes preparing a business plan, obtaining initial approval from the freezone authority, and submitting relevant documents such as passport copies, visa applications, and lease agreements for office space within the freezone. It's crucial to ensure all paperwork is accurate and complete to avoid any delays in the registration process.
Office Space and Facilities: One of the key advantages of freezones is access to modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities. Most freezones offer a range of office spaces, from flexi-desks and shared workspaces to fully furnished offices and warehouses, allowing businesses to choose a setup that aligns with their needs and budget. Additionally, freezones often provide amenities such as conference rooms, business centers, and networking opportunities to support the growth of resident companies.
Banking and Financial Services: Setting up a corporate bank account is essential for conducting business operations and managing finances effectively. Freezones collaborate with leading banks in the UAE to facilitate the opening of corporate bank accounts for registered businesses. Entrepreneurs can choose from a variety of banking services tailored to their specific requirements, including multi-currency accounts, online banking, and trade finance solutions.
Visa and Immigration: Freezone businesses are eligible to apply for residency visas for company owners, employees, and their families, providing them with the opportunity to live and work in the UAE. The number of visas available depends on the size of the office space leased and the type of license obtained. Freezone authorities assist with visa processing and offer guidance on residency requirements, ensuring a smooth transition for expatriate entrepreneurs and professionals.
Compliance and Regulations: While freezones offer a business-friendly environment, it's essential to adhere to local laws and regulations to avoid any legal complications. Freezone authorities enforce specific guidelines regarding business conduct, licensing, taxation, and employment practices. It's advisable to stay updated on regulatory changes and seek professional guidance to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant statutes and regulations.
Business Support and Networking: Beyond providing a conducive environment for business setup, freezones offer comprehensive support services and networking opportunities to foster growth and innovation. Entrepreneurs can benefit from mentorship programs, industry-specific workshops, and networking events hosted by freezone authorities and partner organizations. Engaging with the vibrant community of entrepreneurs and professionals within the freezone can open doors to collaboration and partnership opportunities.
Scaling and Expansion: As your business flourishes within the freezone, you may explore opportunities for expansion and diversification. Freezones offer flexible options for scaling your operations, whether through leasing additional office space, upgrading to a larger license category, or expanding into new markets. With strategic planning and leveraging the resources available within the freezone ecosystem, you can position your business for sustained growth and success.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, Freezone Business Setup In Dubai presents a compelling opportunity for entrepreneurs to establish thriving enterprises in a dynamic and supportive environment. By understanding the nuances of freezone operations, navigating the registration process efficiently, and leveraging the resources and incentives available, you can embark on your entrepreneurial journey with confidence and unlock boundless opportunities for success in one of the world's most vibrant business destinations.

"Larger and larger companies are getting involved in this process, and yet wages remain the same. [...] Money is obviously being made, but it is not trickling down."
"Jujutsu Kaisen's English voice actors were likely paid just $150 to $600 each, based on the going rate in the industry. That's not a per-hour rate. That's the total amount."
This is triply infuriating and insulting because not only is talent being shamefully underpaid even as megacorporations like Sony consolidate power in the industry, and not only is voice acting an undervalued and grossly disrespected profession in general, but the sheer weeaboo snobbery and entitlement on display in the replies under ANN's tweet of this article just shows what a fucking poisonous culture this inane gatekeeping has created for anime voice acting specifically.
I'm not even going to bother making the case for the accessibility of dubs, or that anime dubbing has come a long way since the days of 4Kids and DiC. If you're content to handwave away worker exploitation in the anime dubbing industry because 'real anime fans should be watching subs', I cordially invite you to go fuck yourself into the sun. Especially if you claim to be any kind of leftist as well. Hand in your fucking badge and gun. You are deeply, deeply embarrassing.
Voice actors are passionate, highly trained professionals who are continually honing their skills and bettering themselves throughout their careers, who build and maintain advanced home recording setups as well as the technical expertise necessary to ensure their work is done to the highest standard, whose job (ESPECIALLY in the case of anime dubbing) often requires strenuous physical and vocal exertion that can cause damage and injury. That exertion, and that expertise, and those skills, and that continual maintenance of equipment and self are what these companies should be paying for and aren't. Without all of that, you're left only with the passion, and these people are not hobbyists. Random nerds whining on Twitter could not come close to doing what voice actors do.
Support unionisation, demand better for voice actors, respect dubbed anime, and pull your head out of your crusty weeb ass.

On the one hand, I kind of understand where they're coming from. If Tumblr as a company is unable (or unwilling) to dedicate themselves to the level of human oversight necessary to responsibly maintain adult-oriented content on their site, then not allowing adult-oriented content at all is probably the socially responsible choice to make.
On the other hand, I have serious concerns about an automated system handling a blanket ban on adult content.
I didn't really think there was much problem with the way it's currently handled, where adult content is filtered but not removed, and users could appeal to humans if the automated system flagged their posts in error. Obviously that's not a perfect setup, but it seemed functional. I've had to appeal a handful of my posts (that didn't have anything remotely erotic in them) and they've all gone through. Even though my posts were flagged in error, I describe that as functional because the posts weren't deleted and I wasn't banned from the site for it.
And that's my primary concern. Obviously these new changes mean people can't use Tumblr as a porn site. That's up to Tumblr and ideally shouldn't have any effect on how I use this blog, but I worry about how these changes, especially since they're being handled primarily by automation, could affect people who aren't here to follow porn blogs. I think we're all aware that Tumblr's automated software isn't perfect.
Which leads into my next concern: Where exactly is the line between the Statue of David and PornHub? What of content that is nude, but not erotic? What of content that is erotic, but doesn't have nudity? Fanart and fanfiction? The Statue of David is full-frontal nude, but gets classified as art.
Does that apply to this image by Sailor Moon's creator Naoko Takeuchi, which features a nipple?
Tumblr media
Is it only female nipples?
Tumblr media
What about an image that doesn’t have any nipples at all?
Tumblr media
What if the girl is recolored to make it look like magic?
Tumblr media
What if DiC erases the body lines?
Tumblr media
Anime with non-nude panty shots?
Tumblr media
Minerva Mink in the shower?
Tumblr media
Carmilla in a bra?
Tumblr media
Fanart of Korra’s shirtless back? (x)
Tumblr media
Determining exactly when something stops being art and starts being pornographic can be complex even for human moderators. There are probably people who are sexually excited by all of the above images, just as surely as there are others who wouldn’t say that any of them are sexual in nature. Asking an algorithm to figure out which posts should be classified as adult content sounds fraught with complications, at best.
I’ve long held the position that the nature of a social media site depends on who you follow. If you follow social justice blogs, it’s a social justice site. If you follow artists, it’s an art site. If you follow gamers, it’s a gaming site. If you follow fandom blogs, it’s a fandom site. And if you follow pornographic blogs, it’s a pornographic site. I don’t particularly mind if Tumblr doesn’t want to be a pornographic site. As their update says, there’s no shortage of other sources for that kind of content on the internet.
My concerns are with how these changes will almost certainly have an adverse impact on fandom and artistic communities within the site. With the difference between art and pornography being a vaguely defined gray area in some cases and an automated algorithm (that we already know is deeply flawed) making the decisions, it’s very hard to have faith that these changes won’t spill over and affect people who were never here for pornographic content.
And if you're wondering: This post got flagged while it was in my drafts before I even hit post.
