Hardly an uncommon occurence, to see such urchins run about the streets of the Brume, hollow-cheeked and dull-eyed, skin and bone more than aught else, born in a life of desperation often turning to crime. Haurchefant cannot blame them for it. Only those that would see a half-starved child and think to use him or her for their own gain, while those meant to protect those in need only helped in hand. How many times has he not seen a Temple Knight turn a blind eye as another orphan is snatched from the street and used as fodder or pawns in some political game?
And once following that thread, watching how the coins exchange hands, how those urchins still barely got scraps for the services rendered, how many times would it spool back to the hands of a noble unwilling to dirty their own hands? Oh, it is a game he knows well. An injustice that burns like anger in his heart just as any other.
But 'tis not the thought to dwell 'pon now, when there are answers to be sought. Besides, he may have lightly threatened the lad with retribution for any falsehoods, but he has no intention of reclaiming his coin as long as it stayed within the hands of those who needed it.
With Estinien gone from sight, Haurchefant sets off after the lad, surprisingly quiet for a man clad in armor carrying a great sword. It helps that he knows the twists and turns of these alleys and streets like the back of his hand, helps that his reputation proceeds him enough people do not linger in his path. Not much has changed from when he was an orphan himself, except for the growing filth and ruin, the damage done by dragon's breath growing ever larger. It surprises him little. For all that the Knights and recruits wile away their free time among the commoners for the cheap ale, entertainment and cheaper labor, the Brume is still considered the most expendable part of the city proper.
Speaking of entertainment━
" I would think not, " His lips tilt to a faint smile, though it carries little humor. Nevertheless, there is a disconcerted tug at his heart watching the lad enter. He can but hope the boy is merely running an errand for a patron, or the owner of the establishment rather than aught more nefarious. " Though we cannot hope to find out any more on our mystery benefactor or the victim if we do not pretend we are. " A plan his companion will doubtlessly ill like. His smile tilts wider, blue hues inscrutable as he takes in the dragoon's stern profile, once again wishing he had the luxury of seeing more of his expression. " If I have your trust, however, I do not mind shouldering this part of the burden of our investigation. "
