One understandable but unfortunate aspect of worldbuilding in a lot of published fiction
Is that due to a variety of reasons there is a tendency to assign specific cultures a set of nebulous ideas and only do some building in of things in a variety of secondary media. Even then in a world like the Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra setting this is an entire world. There is plenty of room to explore and deepen elements of its odds and sods and the greater societies that actually wield power without having to do either of the great sins of worldbuilding in fanfiction.
The first is introducing all powerful Marty Tzus who could have single-handedly ended plots and then explaining what these people were doing for the last century and why their sudden intervention should have been acceptable when the Avatar already exists for that role.
The second is creating some faction that never existed in canon and puffing it up into a 'good' version of what the canon often rightly portrays as straight up evil. This is something that I make a point with by building on the canon Fire Nation's use of Mongolian names to outright backdate into it a whole Mongolian culture, the Ulus, as one of the three main strands of the Fire Nation.
Canonically most of the named Mongolian characters are not just villains, they're some of the worst of the worst like Mongke. Building in the Mongolian faction as a broader range of people avoids unfortunate implications, while directly establishing that the Ulus is as much discontent that its bid for empire fails, and it elects to remember this with no small amount of hostility to the purist Japanese types, who correspondingly have their own martial Yamato Damashii view with the Mongols as barbarians.
Likewise rather than villainizing the Japanese aspect by virtue of it holding the great levers of power, the most powerful and prominent Fire Nation characters are all part of this culture, so the heroic Fire Nation characters in the nobility and royal family reflect it just as much as the likes of Azulon.
As far as accounting for the Indo-European elements that exist only in the Fire Nation in this AU (and to a much lesser extent in the Northern Water Tribe) where they are most directly emphasized the eldritch horrors that lurk in the background exposed the Fire Nation to this.
In the other AUs it's just there and the names are associated with a different meaning to 'blue' even if that meaning from Spanish is exactly what Azul- means in real life. In the first AU that the arch-villain originated as a half-human born in Spain and thus it is the cult of Azar that spreads the Spanish Language in aspects along with other languages like the highly agglutinative Urhalzantrani and even aspects of Hebrew.
Neatly inverting the sense of Othering from real life in fiction.

Yosano Akiko: Poet and Artisanal ‘Outsider’
The work of Yosano Akiko had considerable range, addressing and criticising several social and political issues during her career as a writer and poet. Born in Sakai, a significant merchant port in Osaka, she met and was taught tanka (5-7-5-7-7 syllable) poetry by Tekkan Yosano, editor of the Myōjō magazine, who she would later marry. Her influence began in the late Meiji period with the Midaregami (Tangled Hair), a collection of tanka which cemented her as an artisanal ‘outsider’ due to her challenging of the traditional position of women in Japan and detailed references to the female body. Despite heavy denouncement by other writers for its content, the Midaregami was successful in changing popular perceptions of femininity and eroticism.
During the Russo-Japanese war, Yosano wrote the poem Kimi Shinitamou koto nakare, which is commonly translated as ‘Beloved, you must not die’. The poem is addressed to Yosano’s younger brother Sōichi, who served in the Japanese army during the war. Unlike many other works of ‘outsider’ writers of the time, which condemned the actions of the government while maintaining reverence of the Meiji Emperor and imperial tradition, the Kimi criticised the moral code of the Yamato-Damashii (a national identity which tied the fighting and death of imperial soldiers to a form of glory), as well as questioning how the Emperor could stand by and watch the bloodshed of the war take place.
This criticism did not go unnoticed. Indeed, it became the topic of a large-scale debate surrounding the possible interpretations of the poem’s meaning. Prominent literary figures such as Omachi Keigatsu condemned the poem as ‘an expression of dangerous thoughts’ and referred to Akiko as ‘traitorous’ for having written such. Unlike the Midaregami and Yosano’s other writing’s relating to women and gender, criticism of her anti-war, and more importantly anti-Emperor, writing was unanimous on both the literary and public front.
Yosano continued to write through the Taishō and early Shōwa period, as she continued to contribute to pacifist and feminist movements. In later life she would begin to look back on her older works, such as the Midaregami, more critically and her stance on war and the Emperor did not remain concrete for her entire life. Regardless, her work in the Meiji period sowed the seeds for modern sentiments on women, the family, and war amongst other social topics.

Kamen Rider Elder Shaka Zulu Damashii by TrackerZero
KAIGAN! SHAKA ZULU! カイガン! シャカ ズールー! TOKINOKOE! KOKKA NO TATE! ときの声! 国家の盾! (Battle cry! Shield of the nation!) By activating the Shaka Zulu Eyecon, Elder summons the power of the great African warrior and diplomat in this new form. This form has incredible endurance, able to stay sturdy under enormous pressure and pursue enemies across great distances with ease. Shaka Zulu was known for being both diplomatic and a fierce warrior, talking through situations just as often as fighting on the fields, so I decided this form would be granted the ultimate power of the voice: a mighty sonic battle cry, which emanates in emerald waves from Elder's entire mask. DAI KAIGAN! SHAKA ZULU! OMEGA DRIVE! ダイカイガン! シャカズールー! オメガドライブ! By shifting his Eyecon into Finisher position, Elder lets out a mighty roar while summoning a massive ghostly seal. His call to arms summons reflections of himself in the seal, which add to the cacophany, giving the attack real seismic potential.

Did the old Rising Gundam models sell really poorly or something? Like, it would be so simple for Bandai to remold the MG or HGFC Shining Gundam into a Rising Gundam that you’d think they’d at the very least do it as a P-Bandai kit, but no; they never do. They even showed off a prototype of a Robot Damashii Rising Gundam, which then never got released (JUST LIKE FIGUARTS RAIN! THANKS TAMASHIII NATIONS!)

Doctor Who Series 12 Review Part 4/10: Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror
Tumblr media
Air date: 19 January 2020
Last week’s episode wasn’t that good, but this one is a bit better. If you’re wondering why you haven’t heard of Nikola Tesla despite having heard of the Tesla car brand or the Tesla coil, this is a good place to start.
In light of Thomas Edison’s appearance in this episode, I’ve decided to give this episode’s spoiler-free thought in the form of a Family Guy cutaway:
youtube
Let’s break all the spoilers down after the break.
Edison was a dick? Who on earth is Tesla?
When I heard that Thomas Edison would be in this episode, I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to use the clip I had for the spoiler-free thought. A lot of people seem to assume that Edison had a rivalry with Nikola Tesla, yet the most that Wikipedia says is that they are portrayed that way in popular culture. When Edison died in 1931, Tesla contributed the only negative opinion about him to the New York Times. I think that’s why people never talked about him.
At school, I don’t think we ever learned about Tesla. In fifth grade, we did a unit on notable figures throughout history that culminated in a night where everyone dressed up as a particular notable and guests had to guess which figure they were cosplaying. Luckily enough, we were all given a compendium of all the essays everyone wrote about their notables and sure enough, while Edison was on there, Tesla wasn’t even mentioned. In fact, I think the first mention of Tesla that I heard was from this South Park episode:
youtube
In 2012, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal published a comitorial (an editoral comic, I don’t know what else to call these types of comics) named Why Nikola Tesla was the greatest geek who ever lived. In it, he talks about how Tesla came up with the ideas for radio, radar, remote controls and other things, while Edison was basically a businessman who patented and sold ineffective inventions (DC) and inventions made by other people (the light bulb).
Soon after, Alex Knapp published an article on Forbes and Inman published a response on his website. In the episode, the Doctor mentions how Tesla would have been a billionaire if he hadn’t torn up his contract with Westinghouse. Inman notes in his response that he did so out of kindness because they were going through some financial troubles, but after looking on Wikipedia, I found that Westinghouse was basically begging Tesla to stop taking his money otherwise he would have to “deal with the bankers”. Nonetheless, Westinghouse still managed to continue funding the rest of his life, so there.
As far as primary evidence goes, the notion of a rivalry between Edison and Tesla is largely unfounded. A lot of people have had something to say about Inman’s comitorial, however me putting links to it does not mean I’m taking his word as gospel. Based on my schooling, I can agree that Tesla is an underrated figure. Over a decade ago, in fifth grade, if someone had chosen Tesla to be their notable, I can bet that nobody would ever be able to guess who he was.
On a side note, Inman was involved in saving Tesla’s US legacy, namely his laboratory at Wardenclyffe. He and Jane Alcorn joined forces to crowdfund the purchase of the site from Agfa and was successful in May 2013. Now known as the Tesla Science Center, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and work is underway to renovate Tesla’s laboratory into a museum. If you can’t wait for that, there’s also the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia (the airport is also named after him) or the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center at his birthplace in Smiljan, Croatia.
Burning tokusatsu references
You know that thing the Doctor put in the TARDIS to scan the Orb of Thassor? That’s literally the Orb Ring from Ultraman Orb. And yes, that needed a separate section alone because it was just that important.
Tumblr media
I could compare the Skithra to some spider monsters in Kamen Rider, but then I found that they were actually scorpions, unlike the Racnoss. I tried looking in that direction, but none of them fit the description.
This is probably a low-ball thing, but stealing things is also a thing in Kamen Rider, particularly in the case of villain Riders (in recent years) whose equipment is made up of stolen components. Some examples include Blood, Killbus, Metal/Phantom Build and more recently, Jin (Flying Falcon).
Edison was also immortalised in Kamen Rider Ghost as the Edison Damashii, which gave the titular Rider the power to use electricity in his attacks. The secondary Rider, Specter, stole Edison’s Eyecon briefly during his “I’m gonna kill my best friend if it means I can save my little sister” phase at the start of the series. Ghost was eventually able to get it back and he was nice enough to lend Specter the Eyecon again on a couple of occasions during the series. Suffice to say, Tesla didn’t get an Eyecon, not even among the 71 extra audience-pitched Eyecons that Toei created for the Ghost movie. However, he was somewhat acknowledged with the Denki Gamma being based on the Tesla coil.
Other general thoughts
Graham and Ryan are starting to become the comic relief of this series.
What happened to the Silurian blaster? Couldn’t you have used it to defend Wardenclyffe when the TARDIS shields went down?
Tesla apparently invented the “death ray” in the hope that he could prevent warfare due to its power. Look where that got us.
At one point, the crystals of the TARDIS console room turn blue, making the interior look that way. It really harkens back to the Eleventh Doctor’s second console room from The Snowmen onwards.
So, like Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla have been in the TARDIS. But why didn’t the latter men have their memories erased while the former women did? Here’s the simple answer - Lovelace and Khan visited the future while Edison and Tesla stayed in their own time. Indeed, the TARDIS has components that no human would ever be able to understand, but they do run the risk of being inspired by them, which could have affected history. Eh, maybe it’s best to invoke Zi-O’s Rule 3 and move on.
Summary and verdict
I hope this episode (if not this review) will act as a turning point for people’s views on Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. The summary of the matter is that Tesla was a real inventor while Edison was just a patent troll. Some pretty great tokusatsu references this week as well.
Rating: 9/10
Stay tuned for the end of the week as I review the fifth episode, Fugitive of the Judoon. I’ll be doing a mid-series review as well.

Etiquette
Throughout the millennia, since the prehistoric Jōmon period, Japan developed a sophisticated culture and etiquette while absorbing influences from Asia, Europe, and North America.
The code of etiquette in Japan governs the expectations of social behavior. They are considered very important in Japan. The etiquette varies greatly depending on one's status relative to the person in question. Some customs have changed over time. These distinct cultural values make Japanese etiquette substantially different from western and other countries.
Honne and tatemae contrasts a person's true feelings and desires and the behavior and opinions one displays in public. Yamato-damashii refers to the cultural values and characteristics of the Japanese people. It originates from the Heian period and describes the indigenous Japanese 'spirit' or cultural values as opposed to cultural values of foreign nations. Wa is a Japanese cultural concept that implies a peaceful unity and conformity within a social group, in which members prefer the continuation of a harmonious community over their personal interests. Miai is a Japanese traditional custom in which a woman and a man are introduced to each other to consider the possibility of marriage. It is a meeting opportunity with more serious considerations for the future as a process of courtship.[336] Ishin-denshin is a Japanese idiom which denotes a form of interpersonal communication through unspoken mutual understanding. Isagiyosa is a virtue of the capability of accepting death with composure and equanimity. Cherry blossoms are a symbol of isagiyosa in the sense of embracing the transience of the world. Hansei is a central idea in Japanese culture, meaning to acknowledge one's own mistake and to pledge improvement. Kotodama refers to the Japanese belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names.
Japan is regarded by sociologists as a high-context culture. People are more observant of hierarchical differences and communicate less explicitly and verbosely. High context cultures such as Japan are more focused upon in-groups while low context cultures are focused upon individuals. Face-saving (to avoid being disgraced or humiliated) is generally considered as more important in Japan's high context culture than in low-context ones such as the United States or Germany.
There are differences in advertising and marketing in Japan due to the high-context culture. In Japan advertising uses more colors, images, gestures and sounds with powerful meaning behind them. Dialogue is not a central part of the advertising. Every vocal and non-vocal expression is explored, because Japanese people are more sensitive to it. Comparatively in low-context cultures advertising is more straightforward.
