Excavation in Egyptian Necropolis Uncovers 63 Ancient Tombs and a Trove of Gold Artifacts
Grave goods found in 63 burials from ancient Egypt include gold foil figures, pottery and bronze coins.
Archaeologists in Egypt have found the ancient burials of more than 60 people along with bronze coins and gold foil figurines, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced in a statement.
The team found the burials in the city of Damietta on the northern coast by the Mediterranean. Some of the graves date to the 26th dynasty (688 to 525 B.C.) while others appear to date to the Ptolemaic period (304 to 30 B.C.), the statement noted. The discoveries include pottery and shabti figurines, which were meant to work for the deceased in the afterlife.
Researchers zeroed in on the 38 bronze coins found within a pottery vessel at the site. The coins date to the Ptolemaic period, a time when the descendants of one of Alexander the Great's generals ruled Egypt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thomas Faucher, the director of the Center for Alexandrian Studies in Egypt who was not involved in this research, said that from the released images, it appears that many of the coins are engraved with the head of Zeus Ammon. This deity is a combination of the Greek god Zeus and the Egyptian god Ammon (also spelled Amun), who is associated with oracles and prophecies. At least one coin in the images seems to have an eagle engraved on it with a cornucopia (a horn) depicted to the left of the eagle. Based on these details, Faucher dated the coins to the late third century B.C.
Egypt was going through political turmoil when this coin was minted. Around 206 B.C. a large-scale revolt broke out against the Ptolemaic dynasty.
"A large number of hoards were buried at the time of the revolt in Southern Egypt in 206 B.C." Faucher said in an email, noting that there was a coin recall after this, with recalled coins being assigned new values and given new additional markings. It's unclear if the newly found coins were buried during the time of revolt, and more details from the excavations may shed light on them. In any event, the discovery of the burials and coins "is significant, especially given the region's limited known material from this period," Faucher said.

Aside from the coins, the gold foil figurines buried with the deceased are also notable. From the images released, it appears that a few of the figurines depict "ba-birds" — creatures from Egyptian mythology that have wings and a human head. The "ba" in ancient Egypt represented part of the human soul and was sometimes depicted as a bird that could gather food to feed the deceased, according to Swansea University's Egypt Centre.
In addition to the ba-birds, some of the gold foil figurines appear to depict the 'eye of Horus,' a falcon-headed god. Artifacts depicting his eyes were popular in ancient Egypt and were believed to have a protective power.

20 Ancient Tombs Discovered in Egypt
The tombs were found at a massive necropolis, used to bury the dead since nearly 2,500 years ago.
20 ancient tombs dating back to as early as 660 BC were uncovered in the city of New Damietta in Egypt's Nile delta, the country's Tourism Ministry announced on Monday.
The tombs, made of simple pits and mud bricks, were discovered at the Tell El Deir archaeological site. The Tell El Deir site is a massive necropolis, used to bury the dead throughout different eras of history, starting with the 26th Dynasty and through the Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras.
Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, noted that the findings provide an important scientific and archaeological discovery for the history of the area.
Golden chips used to cover the remains were found in the tombs as well, in the forms of the Egyptian deities Isis, Heqat and Bastet, as well as in the form of the eye of Horus and Horus in the form of a falcon.
A range of different funerary amulets, including scarabs, the two feathers of Amun and a number of deities, were found in the tombs as well. Miniature models of canopic vessels used to hold the organs of the dead and statues of the four sons of Horus were also found in the tombs.
Ayman Ashmawy, head of the Egyptian antiquities sector at Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the tombs may date back to the 26th Dynasty, as the style of the tombs and the objects found inside them were common in that era.
Reda Salih, the director of the Damietta Antiquities District, noted that the archaeological mission working at the site is continuing its efforts as there are still many layers of sand to uncover at the necropolis.
Previous discoveries at Tell El Deir
In previous years, the mission found the tombs of other civilizations present in Egypt throughout history, including the Greeks and Romans, at the Tell El Deir site.
In 2019, archaeologists working at the site found gold coins from the Byzantine era and ushabti funerary figurines bearing the royal seal of Psamtik II, a pharaoh of the 26th Dynasty.
The figurines included amulets of scarabs, the eye of Horus, the knot of Isis (tyet) and deities such as Isis, Nephthys, Taweret and Horus. Archaeologists have also discovered limestone coffins, some of which depicted the faces of the deceased, at the site in the past.
The discovery comes just over a month after archaeologists found a tunnel which may lead to the lost tomb of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra at the Taposiris Magna Temple, west of Alexandria in Egypt.

Ras El-Bar is an Egyptian resort city, located on a peninsula along the Mediterranean Sea at the mouth of Damietta Branch of the Nile. It has a gridded street plan and contains numerous “e’sha” — small, square, uniform villas made of cement or brick. The city of Izbat Al Burj, which has a more natural layout, is seen across the Damietta.

Eighth Crusade
The Eighth Crusade of 1270 CE was, like the Seventh Crusade (1248-1254 CE), led by the French king Louis IX (r. 1226-1270 CE). As previously, the idea was to attack and defeat the Muslims first in Egypt and then either reconquer or negotiate control of key Christian sites in the Levant, including Jerusalem. Tunis was decided upon as the first target, from where the Crusaders could then attack Egypt. The plan was dealt the fatal blow of Louis IX's death from illness in August 1270 CE, and the campaign was abandoned before it had even properly begun.
Louis IX & the Levant
Louis had led the Seventh Crusade, which had met with disaster at the battle of Mansourah in April 1250 CE. He had even been captured but later released after payment of a ransom and the concession of Damietta on the Nile River. Louis had then stayed in the Levant for four years when he refortified such key Latin strongholds as Acre. 16 years later, the French king once more turned his attention to the Middle East, his second bite at the crusading cherry.
Louis had been sending funds annually to the Latin states in the Levant in the intervening years since his botched first crusade, but the rest of Europe was rather preoccupied with affairs elsewhere. In England, a civil war raged (1258-1265 CE), and the Popes were in constant battle with the Holy Roman Empire over control of Sicily and parts of Italy. It seemed that nobody cared very much for the fate of Holy Sites in the Middle East.
In the Middle East, meanwhile, the situation for the Christian cities looked bleak. The Mongol Empire, seemingly intent on total conquest everywhere, was moving closer and closer to the Mediterranean coast. In 1258 CE Baghdad, the seat of the Abbasid Caliphate, was captured, followed by Ayyubid-controlled Aleppo in January 1260 CE and Damascus in March of the same year. It looked very much like the Crusader states might be next in line when the Mongols made raids on Ascalon, Jerusalem, and northern Egypt. When a Mongol garrison was established at Gaza, an attack on Sidon quickly followed in August 1260 CE. Without outside help, Bohemund VI of Antioch-Tripoli was obliged to accept subservience to the Mongols and permit a permanent garrison to be established at Antioch.

The increasing relevance of protein design across a range of scientific fields drives the creation of integrative computational platforms that improve tool accessibility and interoperability. In order to do this, scientists present a web-based toolbox that expands upon the Damietta protein design engine by utilizing a framework for tensorized energy calculations.
In addition to other tools like message-passing neural networks and molecular dynamics routines, the Damietta Server smoothly combines several design tools, enabling the user to conduct multiple operations on structural models and send them across tools. With an easy-to-use user interface, the toolkit may be applied to activities like conformational sampling, symmetric design, mutagenesis scanning, and core or interface design.
The basic and applied biomedical research communities will benefit from the Damietta Server’s central resource for protein design and analysis, which will be made possible by the planned integration of additional technologies. There is no need to log in to access the toolbox.
