Gabriela Mistral

Gabriela Mistral, scrittrice cilena, è stata la prima latinoamericana a ricevere il premio Nobel per la Letteratura nel 1945.

Con uno stile e un ritmo narrativo unico e innovativo, nelle sue opere ha affrontato l’amore, la natura e la spiritualità, mostrando una profonda compassione per l’umanità e un forte senso di solidarietà verso le persone più deboli e bisognose.

Nata col nome di Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga a Vicuña, in Cile, il 7 aprile 1889, aveva studiato da autodidatta, con l’aiuto della sorella insegnante, dopo aver lasciato la scuola alle secondarie.

A quindici anni già scriveva versi per un giornale locale e insegnava in una scuola rurale.

Nel 1914 ha vinto il suo primo premio letterario e adottato lo pseudonimo di Gabriela Mistral in omaggio ai suoi due poeti preferiti, Gabriele d’Annunzio e Frédéric Mistral.

Mentre la sua carriera scolastica progrediva, nel 1922 è stata invitata in Messico dal Ministro dell’Educazione, per partecipare a un piano biennale di riforma scolastica con l’intento di far decollare l’istruzione del Paese. Nello stesso anno, a New York, ha pubblicato la raccolta Desolación che le ha portato fama internazionale.

Nel 1923, dopo aver contribuito con suoi testi all’antologia Lecturas para Mujeres, ha ricevuto dal presidente del Messico Álvaro Obregón una borsa di studio di un anno che le ha consentito di viaggiare negli Stati Uniti e in Europa per tenere discorsi pubblici. Tornata in patria, le venne conferito il titolo accademico di Professoressa di lingua spagnola presso l’Universidad de Chile.

Nel 1924 ha pubblicato a Madrid Ternura, altra raccolta di gran successo seguita da un tour per l’America del Sud.

Ha rappresentato l’America Latina all’Istituto per la Cooperazione Intellettuale della Lega delle Nazioni, a Parigi.

Lasciato l’insegnamento, ha lavorato come giornalista e tenuto lezioni e conferenze in diverse università americane come la Columbia e l’Università di Porto Rico.

Dal 1932 fino alla sua morte, è stata console del Cile in diverse città come Napoli, Madrid, Petrópolis, Nizza, Lisbona, Los Angeles, Veracruz, Rapallo e New York.

Ha pubblicato centinaia di articoli in periodici e giornali di tutti i Paesi di lingua Spagnola.

Nel 1938, a Buenos Aires, grazie all’aiuto dell’amica e corrispondente Victoria Ocampo, ha dato vita a una nuova opera, Tala, il ricavato delle vendite venne devoluto agli orfani e orfane dalla Guerra Civile Spagnola. Il volume include vari poemi che esaltano gli usi ed il folklore del Sud America e dell’Europa mediterranea. La prima parte dell’opera è dedicata alla madre, morta nel 1929, da sempre figura chiave nella sua vita.

Il 10 dicembre 1945 è stata la quinta donna della storia e la prima di lingua spagnola a vincere il Premio Nobel per la letteratura per «la sua opera lirica che, ispirata da potenti emozioni, ha reso il suo nome un simbolo delle aspirazioni idealiste di tutto il mondo latino americano».

Nel 1946, durante uno dei suoi viaggi, ha conosciuto la scrittrice statunitense Doris Dana, con la quale è nata una relazione sentimentale segreta e travagliata a causa della distanza. La corrispondenza fra le due scrittrici (1948-1956), raccolta nel libro Niña errante è stata pubblicata postuma nel 2009.

Nel 1947, Gabriela Mistral ha ricevuto la laurea honoris causa dal Mills College di Oakland, in California. Quattro anni dopo, in patria, le è stato consegnato il Premio Nazionale per la Letteratura.

Nel 1953 è nominata console a New York, dove è morta di cancro al pancreas a Long Island il 10 gennaio 1957. Quando i suoi resti sono stati traslati in Cile, il Governo ha dichiarato tre giorni di lutto nazionale.

Durante la convivenza, quando era già malata, la sua compagna aveva iniziato a raccogliere la corrispondenza e le sue opere, più di 40.000 manoscritti e 250 lettere che sono stati donati al governo cileno e conservati nella Biblioteca Nazionale del Cile dal nipote Doris Atkinson, dopo la sua morte, avvenuta nel 2006.

Nonostante il rapporto conflittuale con la sua terra natia, dove era stata spesso discriminata per il contenuto dei suoi lavori che si distaccavano da quelli di una società “maschilista, centralista ed elitaria” mentre nel resto del mondo veniva osannata per il suo talento, Gabriela Mistral non ha mai dimenticato le sue origini e nel suo testamento ha disposto che i proventi delle vendite dei suoi libri in Sud America e i beni mobili o immobili di sua proprietà fossero donati ai bambini poveri di Monte Grande, quartiere in cui aveva trascorso la sua infanzia.

L’Organizzazione degli Stati americani ha istituito, nel 1979, il Premio Gabriela Mistral, «con lo scopo di riconoscere coloro che hanno contribuito all’identificazione e all’arricchimento della cultura tipica Americana e delle sue regioni o individualità culturali».

C’è un’università che porta il suo nome e ogni città principale del Cile ha una strada, una piazza, o una via, dedicata all’autrice.

La sua effige è apparsa nella banconota da 5000 pesos cileni a partire dal luglio 1981, sostituita con una nuova versione nel settembre del 2009.

Il 7 aprile 1991 il cerro Fraile, una collina situata a Monte Grande, è stata rinominata Gabriela Mistral, esaudendo un suo desiderio espresso nel testamento.

Il 15 novembre 2005 la Metropolitana di Santiago del Cile ha ricordato l’anniversario della premiazione del Nobel di Gabriela dedicandole un intero treno decorato con fotografie della poetessa.

Gabriela Mistral è stata una scrittrice girovaga e tormentata sempre da una profonda nostalgia del suo paese che non l’ha mai amata abbastanza. Un pilastro della letteratura sudamericana il cui nome ancora oggi riecheggia nei programmi scolastici e nelle antologie.

Florida Coastal Condo Interior Design

Beautifully designed by the talented interior designer Lisa Michael Interiors, LLC (previously featured here – you need to see it!), this vacation condo located in North Palm Beach features resort-style living with Moroccan flair. Here, the designer shares more insights about this project:

“The water club way project is unique in that it transports the homeowners to the feeling of being in an exotic locale. Through the use of color, texture, materials, and specialty paint applications, the finished look pulls from various design genres that coexist together giving the home an eclectic collected feel. The living areas within the condo were designed to create an experience for the homeowners, each possessing its own unique identity and sense of place. The condo has a tropical and exotic feel, but also an ethnic flair with a contemporary bohemian twist.”

Florida Coastal Condo Interior Design

Beginning in the elevator vestibule you are introduced to what lies ahead.

The hand painted stenciled walls in vibrant orange and a shimmery gold wash create a backdrop for a charpoy bench. A large painting with a moody collage of dots mimics the texture of a Moroccan fabric, giving the home a sense of being in an exotic locale.

Upon entering into the foyer, the walls are saturated in the same vibrant orange that draw the eye up to the mirrored inlay chevron tile and custom Murano glass triple pendant, enveloping the space. A grass cloth entry table sits below a rattan sun shaped mirror adding a sense of whimsy and a tropical touch (Selamat).

The light fixtures in the main living space were carefully selected for their natural elements, adding texture and creating a cohesive lighting story. The main feature of the living space is the custom designed Moroccan inspired étagère backed by a hand painted and stenciled paisley wall in an indigo blue.

Television console and media piece: Designed by the interior designer. She custom designed the media piece with integrated etagere. Finish is Benjamin Moore Snowfall White and silver leaf.

Accent Wall

The hand painted paisley wall creates interest and depth to the space, while the étagère was designed to house the television, while adding shelving for décor. Other key design elements in the living space are the contemporary dramatic and visually engaging rattan lounge chairs.

The outdoor area design continues the color story and resort concept outside and connects the interior and the exterior through color. Table was selected for curved lines and cut out detail. Pop of orange on the chair cushions melds with interior orange accents while the Talavera pottery adds ethnic vibe and woven modern rope chair juxtaposes with dining area for interest and texture.

Den

The den has west views of the city and also functions as an additional guest bedroom with a sleeper sofa.

Enveloping the remaining walls is a saturated cobalt blue that plays back to the linen sleeper sofa dressed with exotic textiles found on the throw pillows. A rattan coffee table juxtaposes with a contemporary lacquered grass cloth desk for her husband who works from home. The windows are framed out with custom draperies with a batik leaf print from Robert Allen fabrics.

Ravenna Jazz, tra i protagonisti spiccano Pat Metheny, Billy Cobham e Paolo Fresu

Un filo diretto con le più varie espressioni del jazz statunitense: la 44a edizione del festival Ravenna Jazz si svolgerà dal 5 al 14 maggio portando nella città romagnola grandi miti del jazz crossover (Pat Metheny), della fusion (Billy Cobham), della scena alternativa newyorkese (Marc Ribot). Anche gli artisti più giovani in programma sono già in aria di celebrità, come la prodigiosa sassofonista Grace Kelly e la cantante Avery*Sunshine, mentre gli Istanbul Sessions faranno da ponte tra la scena musicale d’oltreoceano e quella mediterranea.

Il nostro jazz nazionale risponderà da par suo: sul fronte delle contaminazioni jazz-rock con il Trio Bobo, su quello dei fondamentali jazzistici con il clarinettista Nico Gori e la cantante Laura Avanzolini, oltre che con Paolo Fresu, Tommaso Vittorini, Ambrogio Sparagna e Alien Dee, che faranno squadra assieme ai ben 250 baby musicisti della colossale massa orchestrale e corale del “Pazzi di Jazz” Young Project.

Ravenna Jazz è organizzato da Jazz Network con la collaborazione degli Assessorati alla Cultura del Comune di Ravenna e della Regione Emilia-Romagna, con il sostegno del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo e con la partecipazione della SIAE.

Il Teatro Alighieri aprirà le sue porte per tre serate di grande richiamo. Quella di domenica 7 maggio sarà certamente la più attesa: ogni esibizione del chitarrista Pat Metheny è in sé un evento. A Ravenna Metheny arriverà alla testa di un quartetto dalla spiccata propensione jazzistica: una specie di ritorno ‘a casa’ per questo mito della sei corde che ha percorso con intramontabile successo oltre quarant’anni di carriera.

Il batterista Billy Cobham ha invece un punto di forza nella sua inossidabile fedeltà al genere musicale che lo ha reso celebre: la fusion anni Settanta. La sua attuale band, con la quale sabato 13 calcherà il palco dell’Alighieri, è un turbine sonoro, un’apoteosi di ritmi ipercinetici e sonorità elettriche capaci di riportare alla luce l’intensità degli anni d’oro del jazz-rock.

Sempre all’Alighieri si terrà una terza serata a ingresso gratuito di ben diversa impostazione. Lunedì 8 andrà infatti in scena il “Pazzi di Jazz” Young Project: un monumentale concerto che porta a coronamento mesi di lavoro didattico nelle scuole ravennati realizzato dal trombettista Paolo Fresu, il direttore e arrangiatore Tommaso Vittorini, l’organettista Ambrogio Sparagna e il beatboxer Alien Dee. Questa eterogenea e affiatata squadra musicale si esibirà alla guida di una gigantesca compagine orchestrale e corale formata da ben 250 giovanissimi esecutori, selezionati tra le migliaia di studenti che hanno preso parte al progetto didattico Pazzi di Jazz.

Sotto la bandiera di “Ravenna 44° Jazz Club”, le serate del festival ravennate si spostano in vari club della città e dei dintorni, esplorando le più varie frontiere stilistiche della musica improvvisata e convocando artisti dalla spiccata personalità, in un’alternanza di nomi di culto e giovani già lanciati sul trampolino della notorietà. Sarà proprio uno di questi live a dare il via ufficiale a Ravenna Jazz 2017, venerdì 5 maggio al Cisim di Lido Adriano: protagonista il Trio Bobo, che sprigiona scintille con una fusion spinta ai massimi livelli virtuosistici, jazz-rock dalle tinte vintage incastonato tra ammiccamenti di irresistibile ironia (del resto i ‘Bobo’ sono Faso e Christian Meyer delle Storie Tese, oltre ad Alessio Menconi). Sonorità non meno alternative sono quelle degli Istanbul Sessions guidati dal sassofonista Ilhan Ersahin, tra funk, rock, ritmi ballabili e jazz. Ma più che gli stili qui sono le coordinate geografiche a intrecciarsi: il quartetto mette in cortocircuito le sonorità dell’East Village newyorkese e delle notti di Istanbul (sabato 6 al Bronson di Madonna dell’Albero). Sodale di Elvis Costello, Tom Waits e John Zorn, il chitarrista Marc Ribot si è ben guadagnato il titolo di guru della scena avanguardistica downtown di New York: ogni sua esibizione parte dai presupposti dell’imprevedibilità in attesa di immancabili colpi di scena sonori (martedì 9 al Cisim). La vocalist Laura Avanzolini ci riporta sul sempre fecondo terreno degli standard e della pronuncia jazz più ortodossa: si esibirà dal vivo in trio mercoledì 10 al Mama’s Club e nello stesso giorno sarà anche protagonista del workshop di “Mister Jazz”. Con la cantante e pianista Avery*Sunshine (giovedì 11 al Mama’s Club) la girandola stilistica di “Ravenna 44° Jazz Club” si rimette in moto: in duo con il chitarrista Dana Johnson ci pone di fronte a una visione incantevolmente attuale di tutto quanto fa black music (soul, gospel, jazz, R&B…). Gli ultimi due concerti di “Ravenna 44° Jazz Club” saranno come un viaggio nel tempo. Venerdì 12 (al Teatro Socjale di Piangipane) il clarinettista Nico Gori scorrerà a ritroso il calendario sino agli anni fastosi dello swing orchestrale assieme al suo Swing 10tet e al tap dancer Ernesto Tacco: sarà davvero difficile trattenersi dal ballare. La giovane sassofonista e cantante Grace Kelly riporterà in avanti le lancette dell’orologio: già star di prima grandezza a livello internazionale, arriva per la prima volta in Italia con la sua vorticosa commistione di jazz puro e concitati additivi rock (domenica 14, Teatro Socjale).

Tornano anche quest’anno i concerti ‘Aperitifs’, coi quali la musica esce dai suoi luoghi canonici (teatri e club) per diffondersi nel tessuto urbano e andare incontro a un pubblico che preferisce una situazione di ascolto più informale. Tutti a ingresso gratuito, questi live in orario da aperitivo si svolgono nei locali che fanno ‘tendenza’ del centro cittadino. Tra le locations toccate dagli ‘Aperitifs’ si segnalano diverse novità, mentre si conferma la formula dei concerti in solo, per portare allo scoperto l’individualità di ogni artista.

Il primo ‘Aperitif’ sarà con le “Canzoni nel cassetto” del bandoneonista Pepe Medri (venerdì 5 maggio presso Leonardi Dolciumi 1957). Si andrà poi “A spasso con il basso” assieme al bassista e cantante Giacomo Da Ros (sabato 6, Caffè Pasticceria Palumbo). Da lì si passerà al Caffè del Teatro con lo “(S)concerto per chitarra sola” di Aldo Betto (domenica 7) e poi al Fresco Cocktails & Tapas con le “Note di viaggio: dal tango al jazz” dettate dalla fisarmonica di Massimo Tagliata (lunedì 8). Martedì 9 a Casa Spadoni ci si butterà in “Caduta libera” coi suoni etnici e jazz del chitarrista Tolga During. Ancora chitarra mercoledì 10 al Caffè del Ponte Marino, con le “6 + 1 Songs” per la 7 corde di Daniele Santimone. Giovedì 11, al Due Dame, si passa al sax di Alessandro Scala con il suo “Omaggio a Dexter Gordon”. Venerdì 12 tornerà a grande richiesta un ospite ormai abituale degli ‘Aperitifs’, il pianista-cantante Giacomo Toni col suo “Piano Punk Cabaret” (Cabiria wine bar). I pomeriggi musicali di Ravenna Jazz si chiuderanno poi a suon di chitarra con Antonio Stragapede e le sue “Storie italiane di uomini e chitarre” (sabato 13, Al Cairoli) e con il solo “In My World” di Daniele Bartoli (domenica 14, Naturalmente Burger).

Who is Evan Marien?

Simply put, Evan Marien is a very exciting bass player. The composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist grew up in Illinois, but Brooklyn is now his home. And yes, he's super active on YouTube and pushing his own projects, but you may not know that Evan was also the last bassist to work with the legendary guitarist, Allan Holdsworth. Evan attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. While there, he honed his chops in the fusion, microtonal, and contemporary music scenes with Fiuczynski's "KiF" and "Microjam" bands, including the honor of playing and recording with the legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette on the album Planet Microjam. How's this for crazy: In 2009, Marien graduated Cum Laude from Berklee and the same year was voted in the Bass Player Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, one of the top three "Most Exciting New Players." He hasn't stopped from there. In 2011, he started working fellow Berklee student, Dana Hawkins. The recordings with Hawkins became the project now know as Evan Marien x Dana Hawkins. While he's still at it with that project, he's also recorded under the moniker, EMAR. Recently, Evan can be seen touring with electronic singer-songwriter Elliot Moss and Thundercat drummer Justin Brown's NYEUSI. He has also recorded or performed with Virgil Donati, Wayne Krantz, Zach Danziger, Louis Cole, Marko Djordjevic's Sveti, Mike Slott, Tim Miller, Ari Hoenig, Sebastiaan Cornelissen and many other incredible music makers and instrumentalists.

What is Groove - The No Treble Podcast?

This is an ambitious effort. This will be a fascinating conversation. Our goal at Groove is to build the largest oral history of bass players. Why Groove? Most of the content about the bass revolves around gear, playing techniques, and more technical chatter. For us, bassists are creative artists with stories to tell. They are a force to be reckon with. These are the stories and conversation that we will capture. To create this oral history of why these artists chose the bass, what their creative lives are like, and where inspiration can be found.
