Ray and Zari friendship: "Can this stay between us?"

Takes place sometime S4This was a fun challenge because I really haven’t written much of Zari, but I love the dynamic she’s built with each member of the team this past season.Thanks so much for the prompt!

Zariisn’t sure what time it is (other than really late), when there’s a knock ather door. She groans, swears at the door, then falls back into bed. “What?”

“Zee…canI come in?” Ray’s voice flows through the cracks, like a whimpering puppyasking to be let in.

“Whatdo you want, Ray?” she wines, debating between pulling the sheets over her heador throwing something at him.

“Can Icome in…it’s,” he pauses for a moment, “sensitive.”

Withanother groan she sits up, “let him in, Gideon.”

Thedoors open, and in comes Ray Palmer in his Star Wars pajamas (because of coursethey are). He waits for the door to shut, then moves toward the bed, pausing atthe foot of it.

“Just sitdown,” she motions to the bed, and he quickly accepts the invitation. “Now,what is it that couldn’t wait until morning?” she asks, squeezing the bridge ofher nose.

“It’sNora.” Before she can reply he holds up a hand. “Not what you think.”

“And,what exactly do I think?” she watched as he opened his mouth, only to close itagain and shake his head.

“I meanit’s not about helping her escape…actually it’s kinda about Anna too.” Hehuffs, “I mean, I guess it’s a little about even Kendra.”

“Ray!”she cuts him off, waiting until she has his attention to continue. “What areyou talking about? Who’s Anna? What’s this have to do with your previous teammate?”

“Theywere both my fiancé.” He replies easily.

Zarifeels her jaw dropped, “you were engaged…twice? What happened?”

“Well,Kendra’s reincarnating soulmate came back…and they decided to try and workthings out.” He waves a hand before him, “which was for the best, really.”

“AndAnna?” Zari rests her arms on her pulled up knees.

There’sa sadness she doesn’t think she’s ever seen in his eyes. “Anna Loring was thelove of my life. She loved me before the Atom was even a thought, before I wasanything more than a man full of ridiculous ideals.” He goes silent, and Zari’snot sure this is a story she has the right to pry open. Gratefully, hecontinues on his own. “We were in Starling, now Star, city. There was a villainafter the Green Arrow, our accident was just collateral.” He takes a slowbreath, “we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but my whole worlddied that day.”

“Ray,” Zaridoesn’t know what to say, wonders how the embodiment of sunshine came throughthat so brightly in the end. Absently things how in all the conversations onthe ship, he’s never once asked about going to rescue her.

Heshakes his head, “I’ve made peace with that.” He looks down at his hands, “if itwasn’t for losing Anna, I would never have become the Atom, never gotten here.”

“I’mstill not sure how this connects to Nora Darhk?” Zari questions, watching as heleans back against the wall.

“Afterlosing Anna, I accepted I wouldn’t fall in love again.” He motions to the restof the ship, “then I met Kendra; and I didn’t love her like I loved Anna. But Icould see myself being content, happy even, with her by my side for the rest ofmy life. But Nora,” he runs a hand through his hair. “Nora makes me feel somuch more than that. Her struggle hurts so much, rivaled only by the hope thatshe’ll come through.” He looks at Zari, big puppy eyes so very lost. “I think Ireally love her, Zee.”

“Kendrawas just a placeholder, of sorts. But you feel like this thing with Nora is abetrayal of Anna’s memory?” She asks, pieces falling in place.

Henods, frowning slightly. “Please understand…I really did love Kendra, it justwasn’t the same as…this.”

Shenods, heaven knows she can understand the need for companionship, even if sheknew it wasn’t long term. “So…wouldn’t Anna want you to be happy?”

“What?”he’s looking at her confused.

Shesighs, shifting to sit closer to him. “If your positions had been reversed, andAnna had found someone she loved, someone who brought her heart back from thatblackness…would you have wanted her to move forward?”

“Ofcourse!” he straightens. “Anna’s happiness would trump any vow or promise shemade to me before my death. No question.”

“Anddon’t you think she would want the same for you?” she asks gently, reachingover to take one of her hands in his. “I may not have met your Anna; but I knowyou. I’ve watched you take risks and break rules for Nora, not for a romanticreward, but just so she has a chance for something better.” She shrugs alittle, “if Anna loved you near as much as you care about Nora, I have no doubtthat she’d want to see you happy.” She reaches up to rest a hand over herheart, “moving forward isn’t forgetting the ones we love. It’s choosing tohonor their memory by not letting that loss stop us.”

Raynods, eyes shimmering in the dim lights. “Thanks Zee.”

“You’rewelcome.” She gives his shoulder a light shove, hoping to lighten the mood. “Now,we should both get some sleep before the Captain bursts in with a new catastrophe!”

He laughssoftly before wiping his eyes. “You’re probably right.” He rises, pausing justbefore he gets to the door. “Most of the others don’t know about,” he motionsaround him, “all of this.” He shifts his weight, “so, can we keep this betweenus?”

Shesmiles, “Yeah, Ray. Your secret is safe with me.” She motions toward the door, “nowout! I want sleep!” He laughs again, but makes his way out the door. Zaricollapses back into her bed, wondering how she’d become the romantic advisor ofthe Waverider as she drifts to sleep once more.
