Smoking Prevalence Research

I have reviewed the codebook for the NESARC study and I am curious about the topic of nicotine dependence and the factors that influence it. I am particularly interested in the association between cigarette smoking prevalence and industry (i.e.  agriculture, mining, construction, manufacturing, etc.)      

First research question:

· What is the correlation of smoking prevalence between industries?

Second research question:  It is also good to explore the relationship of income level with smoking prevalence by industry.

· What is the association between smoking prevalence, personal income and industry?

The variables to be used from NESARC codebook: BUSINESS OR INDUSTRY, TOTAL PERSONAL INCOME IN LAST 12 MONTHS, CIGARETTE SMOKING STATUS

Literature Review

In the review of related literature and works on cigarette smoking prevalence by industry and other factors, it is found that:

·  Among industry groups, the construction industry had the highest prevalence of cigarette smoking.  (K M Bang, J H Kim,  2001)

·  There is a relationship between income and cigarette smoking prevalence (Ariel Bardach, Herney Andrés García Perdomo, Ruth Amanda Ruano Gándara, Agustín Ciapponi, 2016)

Hypothesis

There is an association between cigarette smoking prevalence and industry and the correlation may differ depending on the income level.

Enjoying working my way through Learn Python the Hard Way by Zed Shaw. . The book starts simple and gets gradually more complicated. More importantly, though, is that there is particular emphasis on directly writing code with no copy and pasting. Once you've written the code, you go into each line and describe what it does. And if you don't know? Well, it's up to you to go and find out. . It's a very different approach to what I've found with a lot of other training materials, and I'd recommend it as I can genuinely feel my understanding increasing. . I’d be interested in any recommendations of books and textbooks to read next. Sometimes it’s hard to concentrate! . Sounds strange, but sometimes a quiet room can feel noisy. Every little part of the space can feel like a distraction, whether it’s a conversation nearby, traffic going past outside and of course, social media blinking away on your phone. . When I’m having a day like that, I like to listen to loud, classical music. I’m not a classical music buff by any stretch, but it helps me that there are no lyrics. If I’m reading and trying to understand something I find even the words from a song can be distracting and start to bleed into what I’m reading. . Been a little distracted this last week by other things. Nothing particularly serious (internet spaceships...don’t ask) but honestly feel I just needed a break from it all for a few days.
