I'm a faithful watcher of credits, even though today they're sometimes as long as the movie itself. I think if those people devoted their time to making the movie, they deserve a little of my time watching their names scroll by. Oh, okay, not really. The actual reason for watching the credits is that sometimes they reveal tidbits of fascinating information, such as this one for River's Edge: "trainer: Mr. Glover." I have to wonder what Crispin Glover's trainer did: It's not a particularly challenging role physically, so I have to assume it had something to do with keeping the actor from going further over the top than he does in his mannered and eccentric performance as Layne, an adolescent pothead who gets caught up in the aftermath of the murder of a teenage girl. River's Edge was something of a shocker in its day, variously interpreted as an indictment of American society's failure to provide a clear direction for bored and alienated youth, or as a critique of parenting or the school system, or just as a horror story masked as a true crime movie. The screenplay by Neal Jimenez has its roots in two news stories about teenagers in different parts of California who knew about the murder of one of their schoolmates but covered it up. It's not just the teens who get their share of blame: The adults include negligent parents, a half-crazed loner, an ineffective teacher, bullying cops, and the usual gaggle of reporters. That the half-crazed loner is played by Dennis Hopper links River's Edge with another and more celebrated movie of 1986: David Lynch's Blue Velvet. There are moments in Tim Hunter's film, especially when Hopper's character is clinging to his beloved inflatable sex doll, that rival Lynch's. Lynch, however, would probably not have been so tender as Jimenez and Hunter are to the lovers played by Keanu Reeves and Ione Skye, who lend a romantic John Hughes note to the film that dulls its edge.

Heidi Childs (18) and David Metzler (19) were high school sweethearts that were able to continue their romance in college, since both of them got into Virginia High Tech. By August 26, 2009, they’d been together for four years, and had started their sophomore year barely two days before. That night, the couple decided to go out to Caldwell Fields, a campground about 15 miles away from campus that was a popular hangout place for the students, even if at night there weren’t many people around and cell phone service wasn’t the best. David brought his guitar and they were planning to have a small bonfire, but Heidi told her roommates she wouldn’t be back too late because she had homework.

The next morning, a man walking in the campground found the bodies of Heidi and David. He was inside his Toyota Camry; she was lying on the ground next to it. Both had been shot with a 30-30 rifle, one that is commonly used for deer hunting. The shooter had taken Heidi’s purse with all her belongings inside.

To this day, we still don’t know who murdered this young couple. Police said in 2012 that they had DNA from the killer, but they have given little details about the murder itself, except saying it was “brutal” and “ugly”. They even tried to find a connection between this killing to Jesse Matthew, a serial killer who abducted, raped and murdered Virginia students Morgan Harrington in 2009 and Hannah Graham in 2014.It was a long shot, since the MO or victims had nothing in common, and nothing came out of it.

David Metzler and Heidi Childs

Metzler and Childs were sophomores at Virginia Tech when they were killed in the Caldwell Fields area of Montgomery County August 26, 2009. The couple, originally from the Lynchburg area, had travelled to an isolated spot in the Jefferson National Forest to play music and enjoy a quiet conversation in Metzler’s Toyota Camry.

Investigators have determined it was sometime between 8:25 p.m. and 10 p.m. Aug. 26, 2009 when both were shot and killed. His guitar was still in the car, but her purse, credit cards, VT ID and lanyard, camera, and cell phone were gone and are still missing. Their bodies were discovered in that same parking lot early the next morning by a man walking his dogs.

Investigators confirmed Metzler was shot through a driver’s-side window and Heidi was gunned down immediately after she ran from the car.

In 2012, Montgomery County’s then-sheriff, Tommy Whitt, told reporters investigators have DNA evidence from the crime scene, and that the killer used a .30 caliber rifle to carry out the murders.  Little other information about the crime has been released.
