Titanic (1997); AFI #83

Our next film that we reviewed from the AFI top 100 is the standout of the disaster film genre, Titanic (1997). It was and remains one of the most critically and financially successfully movies of all time, only falling behind Gone with the Wind and Star Wars. Our current film was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and took home 11 trophies including Best Picture and Best Director. It was also quite the windfall for the studio, costing $200 million to make and pulling in over $2 billion at the box office. The film was expensive to make, but the detail of the sinking of the RMS Titanic is phenomenal. The coverage of the disaster, however, is used to tell a rather in-depth romance tale between two passengers separated by economic class. I am more's interested about the production of the film, but I want to do a quick summary: the boat sank. Just kidding, let's start with a quick spoiler warning...

In 1996, aboard the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) and his team search the wreck of RMS Titanic. They recover a safe they hope contains a necklace with a large diamond known as the Heart of the Ocean. Instead, they only find a drawing of a young nude woman wearing the necklace. The sketch is dated April 14, 1912, the same day the Titanic struck the iceberg that caused it to sink. Rose Dawson Calvert (Gloria Stewart), the woman in the drawing, and her granddaughter, are brought aboard Keldysh. Rose recounts her experiences aboard Titanic.

In 1912 Southampton, 17-year-old Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), her wealthy fiancé Caledon "Cal" Hockley (Billy Zane), and Rose's widowed mother, Ruth (Frances Fisher), board the Titanic. Ruth emphasizes that Rose's marriage to Cal will resolve the family's financial problems and maintain their upper-class status. Meanwhile, Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a poor young artist, wins a third-class Titanic ticket in a poker game. After setting sail, Rose, distraught over her loveless engagement, climbs over the stern railing, intending to jump overboard. Jack appears and coaxes her back onto the deck. The two develop a tentative friendship, but when Cal and Ruth strongly object, Rose acquiesces and discourages Jack's attention. She soon realizes she has feelings for Jack.

Rose brings Jack to her state room and pays him a coin to sketch her nude, wearing only the Heart of the Ocean necklace. They later evade Cal's servant, Lovejoy, and have sex in an automobile inside the cargo hold. On the forward deck, they witness the ship's collision with an iceberg and overhear its officers and builder discussing the serious situation. Cal discovers Jack's sketch and Rose's insulting note left inside his safe, along with the necklace. When Jack and Rose return to warn the others about the collision, Cal has Lovejoy slip the necklace into Jack's pocket to frame him for theft. Jack is then confined in the master-at-arms' office. Cal then puts the necklace into his own overcoat pocket.

With the ship sinking, Rose flees Cal and her mother, who has boarded a lifeboat. Rose finds and frees Jack, and they barely make it back to the boat deck. Cal and Jack urge Rose to board a lifeboat. Having arranged to save himself, Cal falsely claims he can get Jack safely off the ship. As her lifeboat is lowered, Rose, unable to abandon Jack, jumps back on board. Cal grabs Lovejoy's pistol and chases Rose and Jack into the flooding first-class dining saloon. They get away, and Cal realizes that he gave his coat, and consequently the necklace, to Rose; he later boards a lifeboat posing as a lost child's father.

Jack and Rose return to the boat deck. The lifeboats have departed, and the ship's stern is rising as the flooded bow sinks. As passengers fall to their deaths, Jack and Rose desperately cling to the stern rail. The upended ship breaks in half and the bow section dives downward. The remaining stern slams back onto the ocean, then upends again before it, too, sinks. In the freezing water, Jack helps Rose onto a wooden panel buoyant enough for only one person and makes her promise to survive. Rose is saved by a returning lifeboat, keeping her promise, and Jack dies of hypothermia.

The RMS Carpathia rescues the survivors; Rose avoids Cal by hiding among the steerage passengers and gives her name as Rose Dawson. Still wearing Cal's overcoat, she discovers the necklace tucked inside the pocket. In the present, Rose says she later heard that Cal committed suicide after losing his fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Lovett abandons his search after hearing Rose's story. Alone on the stern of Keldysh, Rose takes out the Heart of the Ocean, which has been in her possession all along, and drops it into the sea over the wreck site. While she is seemingly asleep in her bed, her photos on the dresser depict a life of freedom and adventure inspired by her early conversations with Jack. A young Rose reunites with Jack at Titanic's Grand Staircase, applauded by those who died on the ship.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the film and I feel like it is going to be rereleased in theaters to celebrate. I have seen this film in the theater 3 times including once in 3D. I was also engaged to a huge DiCaprio fan at one time, so I have seen it at home a couple of dozen times as well. I have had time to nitpick, but I want to look at the film as a whole and not point out tiny background details or plot holes that have nothing to do with the greater event. The recreation of the sinking is phenomenal, and I want to look at that first.

Thousands of pictures of the sunken ship as well as video taken from submarines were used to recreate the boat. Cameron got hold of the original schematics from Ireland and a full-scale model was created in Mexico. Hundreds of extras and stuntmen were used to recreate the tragedy, and James Cameron demanded perfection to his vision. There were many injuries on set, and Cameron walked around with a megaphone screaming out directions. Films in the past had showed the sinking in slow motion, which didn't really turn out well, therefore, a full-scale model of the Titanic was sunk at full speed in a 17 million gallon tank with all the actors on the decks.

Since precautions were taken to protect the actors from dying (as you do), and almost everyone died in the actual event, there was quite a bit of special effects and editing needed to get the realism that Cameron demanded. Digital Domain and Pacific Data Images had pioneered special effects for Cameron for Terminator 2 and The Abyss, so both companies were brought on board. The result is amazing. Everything still holds up 25 years later, and it really looks amazing in 3D.

I need to come clean and admit that I do not enjoy the first half of the movie anymore. I did enjoy it more the first dozen times and I was completely mesmerized the first time I saw it in the theater. Not any more. The acting is passable for the most part and the story is very much like Downton Abbey, but you can only see the same romance story so many times. What is pretty obvious is that teenage girls seem to relate to Rose and want somebody like Leonardo DiCaprio to swoop in and save them. I, personally, do not.

Most of the Academy Awards wins (and the other hundred other awards the film won) had to do with directing and effects on this film. There was a bit of an outcry by fans that DiCaprio was not nominated for Best Actor and Billy Zane did not get a supporting actor nod. The reason behind this is pretty simple. Zane got robbed and Dicaprio was a terrible actor in this film. Kate Winslet did pretty well, and Gloria Stewart was fantastic across from Bill Paxton, but the overall acting in this film was not great. That is OK, though, because the setting really stole the show. One standout was Kathy Bates as "The Unsinkable" Molly Brown, a tough Southerner who tried to get the lifeboats to go back and look for survivors after the ship had sunk.

So. Does this film deserve to be on the AFI top 100? Of course it does. It is one of the most successful movies of all time. It is really the opus of one of America's greatest modern directors. Truly spectacular. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. It is especially good in a theater and amazing in 3D. It is interesting that the sinking is the shell story for a whirlwind romance, and the shell story is what makes the movie so good. Well worth experiencing.
