Rin, smiling, and nagging

Rinsha Fana’s character is summarized in a couple facts thrown here and there. Because she worries for him, she follows Kabru to help his cause and protect him, and to nag him. She’s a grumpy angry tsundere, but it seems not only rooted in her attitude but on a deep rooted physical level, to the point where any intense emotion she feels will make her frown and scowl even if it’s genuine joy. Her childhood was half spent ostracized in the tallman community her family lived in and half with the elves, where she’s said to have been treated like an animal.

We don’t know how she was raised exactly or who it even was, but knowing she was "treated like an animal" by the elves taking care of her…

Elves are shown to have a highly hierarchical society, not only with their concern with status such as nobility and the purity of bloodlines but also reflected by its social culture imo. They have high society and etiquette, upmost devotion to the queen, very role-oriented, like cogs in a machine, and as such, it’s a bit skewed since most of what we see of the elves is in a military context with military people but they seem to value having emotions under lock and key to be efficient and not bring dishonor, Flamela is an interesting character on this. Don’t be a bother and do your job until you’re called on, fulfill your role, everything else is extra at best inconvenient at worst.

Personally I do think the canaries kept Rin, it’d make sense that whichever canaries got stuck with the job at the headquarters would be barebones with her and treat her like an ‘impounded article’, they couldn’t find another place for her and this way they can get her report on the events whenever she can speak again in however many years, and this way it makes sense that she could keep in touch with Kabru too. They’re used to prisoners, not kids. Being raised in a military context rather than at some orphanage would shape her further.

All of this to say…

She’d already seen the world’s harshness to those who don’t conform in her hometown, but with the elves? Her disdain for those who had formal education at a magic school?

Wouldn’t she become very concerned with proving she is not an animal, proving that she’s smart and skilled in her own right on her own merit, even without schooling. And to do this she nitpicks and nitpicks, because even being pristine isn’t enough to be respected, but at least it’s not giving others reasons to disrespect and dehumanize her. Learning to school her emotions, to scowl as a defense mechanism because anything else makes her vulnerable, because they don’t care about her as a person with feelings, because showing other expressions was dangerous or punished in some way: because it was fit in or don’t fit in and that’s the difference between having your house burnt down and being tolerated, between getting her food or having her questions answered and being yelled at to shut up… Because all her life she’s been surviving in hostile social environments and at the mercy of others, but unlike Kabru she doesn’t become a people pleaser but becomes very self-reliant and wary of socializing.

So she nitpicks and nitpicks and nags, because she’s worried. Because flaws are dangerous. So she has a hard time smiling and laughing, because it’s dangerous to allow yourself to feel safe in being authentic.

edelgard is such an interesting character in the sense she can be both an amazing protagonist (if u go CF) and also easily one of the most interesting antagonists in the game between her goals and her/byleth being narrative parallels no matter what route meanwhile i feel like dimitri's potential only really gets utilized effectively in azure moon. his character arc in his own route is the most personally investing out of the house leaders imo while in other routes hes mainly just an OK secondary antagonist lol

him as the tempest king had some good ideas and implications but not really explored much sadly meanwhile he just gets killed offscreeen in verdant wind lmao

Been playing through 3Hopes atm… Finished rawdogging Chp5 Green Ally dialogue for Rancid Gautier Man and am on Chp7 of Azure Gleam

Ngl I really love how Hopes has way more Fodlani NPCs who are just guys in your army and you can hear their opinions about the current events of the game…

Recent example are two camp NPCs in Chp7; one NPC calls Dimitri stupid for returning to Fhirdiad while a priestess NPC worries about Rhea’s wellbeing in Camulus

I also love that in battle, when you defeat enemy forces - they have defeat dialogue ranging from ‘aw fuck I lost this sucks :(‘, ‘oh god I can never show my face to my comrades’ or ‘you’ll pay for this!! but also I don’t wanna die so I’ll run like a little bitch’

The world feels so much more alive and that it exists beyond just the named characters

my whole life, but i started taking it 'seriously' ..~12/3 years ago? i won't post my preteen art to avoid taking psychic dmg every time i scroll this blog LOL, but my biggest inspiration was cartoongirl7! any rudimentary imitation of her work you can imagine will be close enough 🤣 my own style hasn't changed in years, but deviantart/twitter (albeit purged) was where i posted pre-tumblr if you're curious. this timelapse is from 2022, but all of the ones showing my whole process are from around then and of similar quality 👴 i don't typically color in procreate for lack of layers lmao, and it's my only timelapse-enabled software

A bit late to the party (heh) on talking about my first blind playthrough of Ena:DB, and honestly surprised that no one really mentioned how the Purge and Extinction Events are just connected to each other. Like you're just wandering around and accidentally step into another liminal space...

Other than the entrance fee being a blood sample of sort (though WebSeries!Ena was considered an uninvited guest and DB!Ena was obligated to trade an arm or leg) on top of both reasons having some form of deception/shield, believe me the whiplash I got when I saw that hall was immense!

Then the Extinction hall shut and I couldn’t access it…Then I got to the Bad Ending…And what a first run that was :) Also me on my third run, jumping straight into the taxi (after accidentally collecting the head on the humanoid side without knowing it) to get screenshots and he says “Have fun at the Extinction Party! -Wait wrong event.”

...So many secrets packed into just Chapter 1, and I'm already dreading the second (most likely Crowd Door since that's next in line on the save file pics) :)

I thought that Gale x Durge has a very freakishly-lovely dynamic because Gale is a wholesome guy, a total husband material who would cast you a sky full of stars, bestow some mind-blowing astral sex upon you, and would marry the-eldritch-horror-you without a second thought. Like, how can you not imagine a Durge who has a very visceral attraction to this man, but it slowly goes from "I wanna chew his hand off"/"I want to split his chest open and poke the orb" to "I want some more of his stew"/"I want to fall asleep while he reads to me"/"I desire him carnally".

But the feels of Shadowheart x Durge pairing is growing on me, too now. Two amnesiacs, one leaning towards things bloody, gory, and depraved, another punished for as much as a kind, selfless, or fond thought. Both serve the most horrible gods, and both are told they should love it.

Imagine Durge helping Shadowheart with her amnesia and realizing that she is a girl who was stolen from her parents, the girl who would have lived happily somewhere, surrounded by her loved ones and all the cute animals she could pet; meanwhile, the Durge's memories are full of blood and murder, of people buried alive and vivisected while they still breathe, of depravity and a family murdered by their hand. Shadowheart engaged in acts of cruelty but had to be branded by scar to completely minimize the resistance.

Durge did all these horrible things because they enjoyed it - and only stopped because of a surprise lobotomy. The realization is killing them slowly.

The crisis of Durge going through the "she deserves better, something like me can't be part of her life" thought train is truly poetic.

(In general, all Durge pairings with companions click together quite well: from Karlach's "innocence is a luxury" to Lae'zel's pragmatic "use your urge for your enemies, don't be a dummy, I'll find you a goblin to carve up if you're that impatient")

being a big fan of gender selectable and/or gender ambiguous characters is so hard because everyone defaults to calling them a guy all the time and it's like. i GUESS that's correct. i guess. you're perfectly free to decide that because that's the point of gender being choosable and im not one to dictate how you play or interpret your playthroughs or opinions on the game. im still gonna fucking kill you though.

anyway: modern sotcn where they're at a gala for their firm and they meet the characters from Laws of Attraction (and Thomas Mendez cuz why not) 😭😭 who are from a rival firm and chaos ensues maybe Livius was invited as a friend of a friend, and Amen was there to investigate Eva and Rame's firm

funnily enough i like to think that livius was invited as rame's unofficial +1 😭

eva's +1 to these events will always be isman. that's her brother, that's her boy, roomies 4 life. however, isman doesn't really want to be in a room filled with stuffy lawyers (which is fair enough) and asks if he can bring a friend from work.

eva asks who he's bringing, and if it's anyone special. she makes fun of him for working so hard, that the only friend he's made so far is his boss.

livius also finds it amusing, but because he's a bit of a material girl and enjoys a bit of glamour in his life — he'll never turn down a gala. he might even use this time to make connections on behalf of the hospital.

eva grits through her teeth when she shuffles to rame's work cubicle, coffee in hand, looking unbearably and uncharacteristically sheepish.

she places the coffee down gently on his table.

he looks up at her, slightly confused, and back down at his work. "who the hell are you and what did you do with evthys."

"ramesses... we're friends right?"

"not really." (he's smiling)

she asks if he could pretty please give his +1 invitation to her so that isman doesn't have to go by himself. rame pretends to think about it. he wasn't going to use it anyway. he just wanted to see eva squirm a little bit.

(dia and isman meet here for the first time. eva and rame are too busy checking each other out bickering outside of work hours to notice.)

as for amen:

being in a room full of people who wanted him dead was not the way he wanted to spend his saturday evening, but when duty calls, it calls.

when the mayor wants a representative from the police department, it's not easy to decline, so much to his protest, he attends with his second-in-command, titian.

titian's chatty abrasive (though surprisingly charming) attitude saves him from having to do any real socialisation himself. the con is that he gets along with them too well, and kind of leaves him stranded for the rest of the night.

literally nothing this dude hates more than lawyers and pleasantries — and yet here he was.

it's a little funny to see someone so imposing as amen look so out of his element. livius sees amen from a distance. recognises his white hair and alabaster skin. an old patient of his.

(livius helped perform extraocular muscle surgery on him to alleviate some of the pain he experiences due to his ocular albinism during his first year of medical residency.)

he taps him on the shoulder and hands him a drink. "i take it you recovered well."

"doctor pella." amen's rbf softens at the sight of him. there's even a hint of a smile if you look hard enough. "it's good to see you again." he takes the drink offered. "i trust you survived your residency?"

"by the skin of my teeth, detective." he clinks his glass to amen's. "tell me what you've been up to lately."

#so minthara and her big wet eyes for durge might be complete soon The thing is, hers started off as just, like, a character fanmix for Minthara, but it just veered into containing so many songs about Minthara's capacity for all-consuming love that I have been trying to figure out if it's a Minthara/Durge mix now and needs to be titled as one
