Deer's Xenofiction List - The Good, the Bad, and the Furry

Compilation of my xenofiction books I've read, my opinions on them, and ones that I've yet to get to. Will be updated as I go along, if I remember. Books I have not read have an asterisk (*) in front of them. Not a complete list, I will update as I gather more titles.

Adaptations will be listed along with the source material and not as a separate entry.

While I am accepting additions to the list, please make sure your suggestion isn't already listed.

Books

Warriors by Erin Hunter - A long-running series following the drama of four groups of feral cat groups in a forest.

Rating: sucks just read the first arc and nothing else. unless you have childhood nostalgia for this series you probably won't like anything that comes after.

Seekers by Erin Hunter - another animal series from the erin hunter team. It follows a group of bears searching for a safe place to live.

Rating: It's fine. I only read the first arc. While it has a much drearier tone than Warriors at times as it deals with growing environmental impact of global warming and human interference. If you like Erin Hunter's writing style, you might like this one.

*Survivors by Erin Hunter - Look we just gotta get these out of the way, these guys have a monopoly on kid's animal books. Survivors follows a dog named Lucky (yes. really) trying to survive in an area abandoned by humans.

Rating: I read the first book and nothing else. I'm sure it's...fine, suitable for a dog-obsessed young reader but as it is, no one's really rushed to recommend it to me. I'm sure it has fans somewhere, but I can't really speak for them.

*Bravelands by Erin Hunter - uuuhhh animals? in Africa? Surviving? I guess? Sorry my bias against Hunter is showing, but at some point you start to wonder what's going on here, you can feel them trying to recreate the success of Warriors.

Rating: idk what to tell you, never read it and probably never will. If you're a person who likes lion stories, you might enjoy this, maybe? Been told the hyena rep is appalling, another sad day for hyena lovers everywhere.

*Bamboo Kingdom by (you guessed it) Erin Hunter - It follows three pandas (apparently) each in different panda kingdoms.

Rating: I couldn't tell you shit about this one to be honest. You want more bears? Here's bears!

The Bees by Laline Paull - A novel following the life of Flora, a sanitation bee in her hive who rises through the ranks of her devout society.

Rating: Unfocused at times and a rushed ending, but a gripping story nonetheless. Would recommend!

Pod by Laline Paull - Follows the life of Eira, a spinner dolphin from an "exotic tribe" who is forcibly taken into another group of dolphin's to become a member of their leaders harem.

Rating: This book relies on the mythos of "dolphin rape" with numerous, non-graphic sexual assault scenes. While interesting concepts are introduced and, at times, the plot becomes compelling; it otherwise flounders its premise with messy execution and poorly thought out ideas. Also there's an American spy dolphin named Google, make of that what you will.

*The Wildlings and its sequel The Hundred Names of Darkness by Nilanjana Roy - A book about a small band of cats lives in the labyrinthine alleys and ruins of Nizamuddin, an old neighbourhood in Delhi.

Rating: Recommended multiple times to me by different people, no warnings given.

Varjak Paw (and sequels) by S. F. Said and illustrated by Dave Mckean - A short book about Varjak, a Mesopotamian Blue Cat, and his journey to learn an ancient art from his family’s past.

Rating: Varjak Paw is unique with striking imagery and interesting ideas. However, the writing in itself is far from anything special. The book it at its best when accompanied by Mckean’s striking visuals.

*The Underneath by Kathi Appelt - An abused dog hides under the porch of a home to escape from its owner. Based on a reply I've been given, do not ask me to expand anymore on the plot of this book, I have no goddamn clue.

Rating: Described as a formative book for reading xenofiction, it’s been recommended highly! Contains heavy topics such as animal abuse, be warned.

*Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies - A novel following a red deer named Rannoch and a prophecy that looms over him.

Rating: It seems to have a decent fanbase and it's been recommended to me a handful of times.

*Bambi, a Life in the Woods by Felix Salten - A coming-of-age novel following a roe deer named Bambi. Best known from the 1942 Disney film.

Rating: If you're a deerhead, check it out I guess!

*Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker - Often (favorably) compared to a textbook, Raptor Red follows a female Utahraptor. Written by a paleontologist, it's meant to be a realistic look at dinosaur's social habits and their interactions with their world.

Rating: Yet to read but sounds cool as fuck. This book contains a heavy emphasis on realism and world-building, with little dialogue. It may be slow for some readers!

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell - Horse girls, certain English classes, and so on, Black Beauty is fairly well-known. Though for those unaware, Black Beauty follows the titular Black Beauty's life in Victorian days.

Rating: It's a classic! Pulls at your heart strings! Just typing this out makes me want to reread it.

Watership Down by Richard Adams - Similar to Black Beauty, I can't imagine anyone reading this list doesn't know about the tale of a group of rabbit's trying to survive a harsh world.

Rating: It's well-written with a lively world, but its treatment of its female cast reveals a deep gendered bias in the writing.

*Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert. C. O'Brien - Mostly known from the (excellent) Don Bluth adaptation, the book follows Mrs. Frisby and he encounter with a group of highly intelligent rats.

Rating: Yet to read.

*Redwall by Brian Jacques - A 22 book series following a group of anthrophormic animals who live in Redwall Abbey and their call to action to defend themselves from "vermin".

Rating: Yet to read

Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky - A 31 book series following a group of owls and their attempts to thwart evil. The first arc follows Soren and his attempts to find the owls of Ga'Hoole and beat the 'Pure Ones' while the later books act as an epilogue and prequel.

Rating: First half read and loved! Highly recommend! Handling of Kludd is...meh.

Note: It has an animated film adaptation! While not entirely faithful, it still does a great job keeping to the themes of the books, trimming the fat, and telling a complete story. It also has two video games, one on DS and one on ah other consoles? Both are fun, I like the Wii version.

*(sorta?) Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland - Most people reading this will know this one! It takes place in a world of dragons with seven tribes. The first arc follows the exploits of prophecized dragonets and their attempts to end a war.

Rating: I've yet to finish it. The writing is skewed for a younger audience but is charming nonetheless.

Note: It has a graphic novel adaptation illustrated by Mike Holmes.

*Duncton Wood (First book of the Duncton Chronicles) by William Horwood - A novel the three groups of moles in Duncton Woods and the tyranny of a powerful mole named Mandrake.

Rating: Not yet read, heard good things! lots of mole sex apparently.

The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams - After escaping an animal research facility, Snitter and Rowf escape out into the wild where they must survive a hostile world.

Rating: ough. my heart. would recommend.

Note: Well-known for its animated adaptation, would recommend it as well.

*Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel - The first in the Silverwing book series, Silverwing follows a bat named Shade who loses his colony during a migration to the south.

Rating: Yet to read but I've heard good things!

*A Black Fox Running by Brian Carter - The story follows the tale of a dark-furred fox named Wulfgar and his human nemesis, Scoble the trapper, over the course of time.

Rating: Yet to read.

*The Books of the Named/Ratha’s Creature (First book of the Ratha’s Creature series) by Clare’s Bell - Ratha’s Creature is set in prehistoric times following the story of Ratha, a Dinaelurus nimravid(?) and her role as a female in her Clan.

Yet to read, often recommended in the Xenofiction scene.

*The Taken (Book one of the Foxcraft trilogy) by Inbali Inserles - Follows the story of Isla, a fox kit who loses her home and family and must survive in the world of “furless” while mastering Foxcraft.

*Hurry Home, Candy by Meindert DeJong and illustrations by Maurice Sendak - Described as "heavy", Hurry Home, Candy follows the life and struggles of a dog named Candy.

Felidae (the first book in a nine book series) by Akif Pirinçci - A crime novel following Francis the cat as he tries to uncover the truth behind a series of murders in his new neighborhood.

Rating: I haven't read the novel and nor do I want to, but I did watch the adaptation. It's a grisly one but apart from the violent murders and striking imagery in the film, you're not missing much by skipping it. I can't really recommend this one for a variety of reasons.

Important: I can't stop you from reading the book or watching the animated adaptation, I watched the animated adaptation, but please do not financially support the author in any way. Pirinçci is a far-right dipshit and does not deserve support.

The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann - With eight books under its belt, The Animals of Farthing Wood originally started as one book about a group of woodland animals trying to find a new home after losing their old one to human development. It was followed by six sequels and one prequel.

Rating: Haven't read the books but I love the animated adaptation of it! I recommend checking out both.

*Ragweed (First book of the Dimwood book series) by Avi - A book about the adventures of a mouse seeing the world.

*A Dog's Life: An Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin - Written by the same author of the Babysitter's Club series, A Dog's Life chronicles the life of a dog named Squirrel.

*Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker and illustrations by Junyi Wu - Scary Stories for Young Foxes is a book consisting of several stories all told by a mother to her kits.

*The Sight (and its sequel The Fell) by David Clement-Davies - Set in the same universe as Fire Bringer, The Sight follows a pack of wolves cursed by a lone wolf, Morgra, whose powers foretell the destiny of one of the mother wolf's pups: Larka, a white wolf gifted with a mysterious power known as The Sight.

*Last of the Curlews by Fred Bodsworth - A realistic depiction of the journey of the last of a critically endangered and soon to be extinct bird.

*Wish Tree by Katherine Applegate - From the same author as The One and Only Ivan! While this story includes animals, it's main character is an old oak tree named Red! The perspective is really interesting. She is both the neighborhood wish tree, and a home for many animals. A family of Muslim refugees move into the neighborhood, with the kid, Samar, becoming attached to the tree.

*Pax by Sara Pennypacker - A war approaches and Peter must release his pet fox when his father enlists. The story alternates between Peter as he starts a journey to find his pet, and Pax who is learning to survive in the wild.

*A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Perry - Inspired by the wolf 0R-7 (Journey), we follow Swift. After a rival wolf pack attacks, Swift's family scatters and must find a new home, taking an 1000 mile journey across the Pacific Northwest.

*The Tygrine Cat by Inbali Iserles - Alone and lost, a young cat called Mati is struggling to be accepted by a colony of street cats in the bustling marketplace at Cressida Lock. What Mati doesn’t know is that he is the last of a vital, age-old breed and that a mysterious feline assassin named Mithos is close on his trail. With his enemy nearing, can Mati learn to harness his ancient powers — before a deadly feline force destroys both him and his newfound friends and takes the spirit of every cat on earth?

Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis - The ancient Greek Gods make a bet and endow fifteen dogs from a shelter with human-level intelligence.

Rating: I can't say I loved this book but nonetheless I appreciated it's prose. If you can get past outdated pack dynamics and some...questionable writing around its female characters, there's a lot to appreciate. Mind you, this is a book for adults and does not shy away from sexual material.

Comics (Webcomics included)

Beasts of Burden written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by Benjamin Dewey and Jill Thompson - The comics follow along the adventures of the ‘Beasts of Burden’ a group of animals who investigate paranormal happenings in their neighborhood.

Rating: With gorgeous art and an interesting world, I recommend! Just be warned, it is bloody and the sory doesn't hold your hand.

Note: Beasts of Burden currently has 21 comics published in Dark Horse Comics.

What Lurks Beneath by ArualMeow - A feral colony must grapple with a food shortage while simultaneously tussling with the divide between two groups of cats.

Rating - A highly compelling read. Each character plays a role in the unravelling drama of three siblings and you will walk away loving someone.

I Hope So by Detective Calico - A rewrite of My Pride turned into an original story, I Hope So follows the story of three lionesses navigating both the complicated politics of the lion prides but also the harsh environment they must survive in.

Rating: Slow to update but absolutely worth it! I Hope So is a charming and interesting read. It’s yet to finish but it’s far enough that you'll be able to invest yourself in the world and characters with no trouble!

Tofauti Sawa by TheCynicalHound - A revenge story that follows a spotted hyena named Sahara.

Rating: Tofauti Sawa is not here to endear you to its protagonists or hold your hand. It can be a tough read but a worthwhile one nonetheless. I need to catch up but I recommend it!

*Golden Shrike by Doeprince - A story about twin deer and their friends and their search to retrieve three fallen stars for a bored God.

Rating: Yet to read but I've heard good things!

*Doe of Deadwood by Songdog - It follows a deer who has a pact with a demon that takes the form of a tree. It has some heavy themes and light gore.

Jet and Harley by Doeprince - Described as a beautiful piece on grief and moving on, Jet and Harley stars a kitty cast and gorgeous artwork.

Rating: Recommended anonymously. It's still starting but it has some strong set up and charming writing going for it, I recommend keeping an eye on it!

Preeny Has to Repeat 6th Grade by momodriller - A love letter to adoptables and the creativity of young artists, this charming comic utilizes designs bought from adoptables on DeviantArt! It follows the story of Preeny, a young cat with a magic brush tail and what happens when her whole world turns upside down.

Rating: Beyond adorable, charming and sweet. There's a lot of love put into this webcomic and it shows! Highly recommend.

Africa by Arven92 - The story of a female leopard named Africa and her quest to protect her family and loved ones while her territory comes under threat.

Rating: Gorgeously drawn and with a story that twists, Africa pulls no punches in showing you the wickedness of its antagonists but also the enduring bond of a family.

*Oren's Forge by Teagan Gavet - A webcomic that explores the dynamics of predator and prey and what happens when those divisions fall in the story of a pair of pine martens and their journey for sanctuary.

Rating: Not yet read

*Pride of Baghdad written by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon - A graphic novel falling the fictionalized account of the real life escape of four lions from the Baghdad Zoo after an American bombing in 2003.

Rating: Not yet read.

*I Didn't Know by Songdog - A comic about a cat exiled from her Church.

*Fox Fires by Pipilia - This ongoing Webtoon follows a Tanuki named Raate as she goes on a journey to find the missing "Fox Fires", a gate between the land of the dead and living. She encounters many friends such as birds who are messangers for elves, magic cats, and normal mean wolves.

Manga & Anime

*Silver Fang Gin and Ginga Densetsu Weed written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Takahashi - The original and the sequel respectively, the manga series follow Akita dogs, Gin and Weed. While Silver Fang focuses on Gin's search to fight the monstrous "Red Helmet", Weed follows the titular Weed and his search for his father.

Rating: I've not read this but upon getting recommended it, multiple people warned me about the misogyny in the series. Ye be warned. Additionally, the manga is (apparently) very gory!

Note: Both have anime adaptations. Weed's opening is a fucking banger go watch it at the very least.

Beastars (and Beast Complex by extension) written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki - In a world of anthromorphic animals, Beastars follows Legosi, a young wolf navigating his complicated feelings towards other species and learning more about his world.

Rating: Beastars is action-packed, fun, emotional, and dramatic! The first half is a compelling story of identity and how we interact with one another and the complex forces of society that drive our feelings, all wrapped up in a wonderous animal metaphor. As a coming-of-age story, it carries themes of desire, sexual desire, yearning, shame, and more. The second half is eeeeehhh not as strong, but I still recommend it nonetheless!

Note: Beastars currently has an anime adaptation by Studio Orange! It looks fantastic and has some really nice quality of life changes. Highly recommend.

Chi's Sweet Home written and illustrated by Konami Kanata - An adorable slice-of-life story following a cute kitten named Chi adapting to her new home.

Rating: It's just plain cute! If you're looking for something adorable to help you relax, I recommend this one. It's for a younger age demographic so don't go in expecting deep storylines or anything.

Note: Chi's Sweet Home has two adaptations: one with traditional 2D Japanese animation and two seasons and a 2016 3DCGI adaptation. I'd recommend the original adaptation but that's pure preference.

Nyankees written and illustrated by Atsushi Okada - A comedy manga that depicts street cats as brawling "yankees", drawing them as both cat and human to depict their brawls over food, territory, and ladies!

Rating: It's funny, I can't deny the humor in this one makes me chuckle. It's a little racy but otherwise, a fun, light-hearted read.

*A Cat's Tale written by Sae-Him Kwon and Hyeon-Jung Kim and illustrated by Kwon-Sam - A thrilling tale of murder and deception from the animals living on the Sae-Min's farm from the point of view of an elderly cat.

Rating: Yet to read, discovered on Anime-Planet's search system.

Monotone Blue written and illustrated by Nagabe - A story set in high school, it's a BL manga that follows Hachi the cat and Aoi the lizard.

Rating: Yet to read, but I adore the author's other works so I have high expectations!

*Neko to Ryuu written by Amara and illustrated by Sasaki Izumi- A cat raises a baby dragon as her own.

Rating: Yet to read but come on, that sounds adorable.

A Story of Seven Lives written and illustrated by Shirawaka Gin - A Story of Seven Lives follows Nanao, a former housecat turned street cat after a terrible tragedy.

Rating: It's a tearjerker and absolutely adorable. The artwork is lovely and all the cats' designs look fantastic. if you're interested in a simple drama about the relationship between cats and people, i would highly recommend it.

Note: There are human protagonists! If you want pure animal protagonists, maybe skip this one.

*The Walking Cat: A Cat's-Eye-View of the Zombie Apocalypse by Tomo Kitaoka - Zombies roam the earth and civilization as we know it is dead. When Jin—a young man trying to survive the chaos—rescues a cat from certain death, the unlikely duo sets off on a quest to find a mysterious island where Jin’s wife may be alive. Witness the zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a fearless feline whose curiosity may kill him yet.

Rating: Not yet read.

PLEASE READ: Due to its setting, this series has been given a handful of content warnings, please heed this warning before you read. Content warning for gore, death, sexual abuse, physical abuse.

Film

i'm not gonna put every disney or dreamworks film on here i'm sure a majority of us know that disney makes a lot of already popular animal films. if possible, i'd like to spotlight some films that weren't made by big studios and/or don't get a lot of attention. Further note, some of these are adaptations of children's books. I'm cheating a little here mainly because the adaptations are more well-known and probably more appealing for readers of this list than the original books. Uh, sorry.

The Brave Little Toaster directed by Jerry Rees - The film follows the adventures of sentient kitchen appliances and the search for their owner.

Rating: Aimed for a younger audience, it's an adorable viewing for all ages.

Isle of Dogs directed by Wes Anderson - In the year 2038, canine flu breaks out in a futuristic Japan and all dogs are sent to 'trash island' where they fight to survive. One day, a young Japanese boy crashes down on trash island to find his dog.

Rating: The stop-motion animation is gorgeous, the writing is fun and charming, and the visuals are amazing, however the film has rightfully garnered criticism for its stereotypical depiction of Japanese society and 'white savior' narrative around one of its human characters.

Chirin no Suzu (English Title: Ringing Bell/Chirin's Bell) directed by Masami Hata - On a farm, Chirin witnesses the death of his mother to a wolf. Distraught and filled with rage, Chirin vows to get revenge and trains to do so.

Rating: A fantastic and visually striking film, the film's cute aesthetics hide a sombre and darker story. Would recommend!

*Vuk (English Title: The Little Fox) directed by Atilla Dargay - A Hungarian animated film that follows the life of a fox and how he must use his wits to survive.

Rating: Not yet watched.

Arashi no Yoru Ni (English Title: One Stormy Night) directed by Gisaburō Sugii - On one stormy night, a sheep and a wolf take refuge from a storm in the same abandoned home and befriend each other...unaware of what species the other is until later. They strike an unusual friendship that's tested when their respective groups begin to clash.

Rating: Cute, sweet, and well-animated, One Stormy Night is well known for the romantic undertones of its two leads. I think it's adorable and highly recommend.

Note: It received another adaptation of the same source material, a 3D animated show where they made the sheep a girl. Do with that information what you will.

Leafy, A Hen into the Wild directed by Oh Sung-yoon - A farm chicken dreams of one day living a life in the wild and raising her own clutch of eggs and, after faking her death to escape, finally gets the opportunity to do so.

Rating: A gorgeous animated film with moments that will tug at your heart strings. It's got some kiddy jokes with poop and fart jokes but they're not too distracting. Would recommend!

Note: Please find a version with the ORIGINAL ending, not the censored one. It is more thematically fitting and one heck of a gut-punch.

Underdog/A Dog's Courage directed by Lee Chun-baek and Oh Sung-yoon - After being abandoned by his owners, a dog joins up with a pack of other dogs in search of 'paradise'.

Rating: Despite some poor pacing and wonky tonal problems, I think this movie is still worth checking out! The character designs are cute and it's decent entertainment if you've got some time.

Note: There's a post that says this movie is about dogs escaping to North Korea, it's not true. They escape from North Korea to South Korea.

Padak directed by Dae-Hee Lee - A dark and sometimes brutal film about a wild fish that ends up in a restaurant fish tank that overlooks the ocean. The film stays there and the audience is given a tense, nerve-wracking narrative of life and death.

Rating: A fantastic, emotional movie that uses its limited setting to its full advantage. It's brutal and unforgiving but one hundred percent worth the watch.

Khumba directed by Anthony Silverston - A film that follows a zebra with only half his stripes and his journey to gain the rest of them in hopes of being accepted by his herd.

Rating: It's fine, a little wonky but it has a lot of heart.

Earnest and Celestine directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner - A gorgeous 2D French animated film based on a series of children's films about a bear who takes in an orphan mouse in an anthropomorphic society that does not approve.

Rating: you're going to get cavities at how sweet this film is. Charming, funny, and visually stunning, you would be remiss if you didn't watch this wonderful film at least once.

The Land Before Time directed by Don Bluth - After tragedy strikes, young Apatosaurus must embark on a journey to find the Great Valley.

Rating: It's a classic! A bit cutesy and meanders at times, but still worth a watch.

Note: Pretty well known for the host of direct-to-DVD sequel movies it produced, a television series, and a video game.

Television (Online Productions Included)

My Pride directed by Maddi Patton - My Pride is an independent internet production that follows the tale of a disabled lion named Nothing trying to exist in her cruel society.

Rating: My Pride is clearly a work of passion, one can’t deny the creator clearly had a vision of what she wanted from this show. However, the execution is flawed and the handling of disability has been (rightfully) criticized. While the animators and voice actors have clearly put a lot of love and effort into the project, the writing falls short of what it could be.

Note: The series ends on a cliffhanger and has been discontinued. You have been warned.

My Little Pony (Generations 1-5) developed by Hasbro - If you like ponies, here you go! While G1 did have a human character, G3 to G5 are purely horsies. Each generation has a different story and main cast to follow.

Rating: Very obviously for a younger age demographic, the generations do have their own charm! G4 is popular for a reason with a sleek style, witty writing, and a lovely cast of characters.

Azurehowl and Azurehowl Reborn created by azurehowlshilach - Bet this one brings back nostalgia lol Azurehowl is set in a world where wolves have the magic of dragons! It centers around Ruuza who may be more special than she realizes.

Rating: i gotta rewatch this one to make my thoughts clear but i remember finding it charming. Azurehowl Reborn appears to be the remake/reboot of the original series.

Twelve by Petpyves - An original series about May and Imp, a duo who's jobs are to jump from body to body and guide them to a better end, results vary. It's a work of love and has some really strong concepts and writing, as well as doing its best to handle more mature subejcts with respect.

Rating: It's rough around the edges but nonetheless a great show to binge! I recommend it, though it's been a while since I watched it.

Rating: ending made me bawl. Gameplay is a bit clunky, the platforming is essentially hitting buttons to automatically jump to your destination instead of you jumping yourself. Otherwise, would recommend!

*Tokyo Jungle developed Crispy's! - Set in a deserted, furistic Tokyo, you can select from a wide array of animals to play as and survive.

Rating: never played but maaan do I want to.

*Spirit of the North developed by Infuse Studio- You play as an ordinary red fox whose story becomes entwined with the guardian of the Northern Lights, a female spirit fox.

Rating: I love PMD, I'm putting it here because I'm biased. I love it a lot and it fits the criteria so here you go!

Cattails & *Cattails: Wildwood Story developed by Falcon Development - With the creator known for their WC fan game, Untold Tales, Cattails branched out from the bones of the fan game and became an original game of it's own! In this RPG, you play as a cat where you can hunt, fight, find love, and solve puzzles. Wildwood expands on the base mechanics, adding in farming, characters, and more!

Rating: I found the first Cattails to be cute and simple. It's not an intensive RPG, the mechanics become repetitive after a while. If you're someone who likes getting into the rhythm of a grindy rpg, you'll like this one. Not yet played Wildwood but I've heard it's great!

Rain World developed by Videocult - You play as a nomadic slugcat in a brutal world with only your wits, agility, and strength to survive. Eat, hunt, flee, and hibernate while finding out the secrets of your world.

Rating: Okay. this game is HARD. Like unfair hard. Imprecise controls, brutal difficulty, and sometimes really unfair save points - this one is tough. However, it is gorgeous and it's really fun seeing all the beautiful environments the creators came up with. Enemies are also incredibly complex, reacting to each other and you in different ways. It's an acquired taste, while it wasn't for me personally, I would recommend giving it a try at the very least.

Le Guin -A fantastic essay that explores the role of the animal in children's literature from its role as something to reflect human society, or how it teaches children about animals. Furthermore, it explores the ways in which xenofiction can intentionally or unintentionally reinforce human bigotry through what we deem the "natural" order of the world.

Rating: Please read if you're interested in xenofiction! A fantastic essay that kicks you off thinking critically about what xenofiction has to say. The essay has a striking section on Watership Down that I highly recommend reading.

India has urged its citizens travelling to or living in Canada to "exercise utmost caution".

The advisory comes a day after tensions escalated between the countries with each expelling a diplomat from the other side.

Canada said it was investigating "credible allegations" linking the Indian state with the killing of a Sikh separatist leader.

India strongly denied this, calling the allegations "absurd".

Analysts say relations between the countries, which have been strained for months, are now at an all-time low.

On Wednesday, India's foreign ministry said it issued the advisory "in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada".

The Indian government has often reacted sharply to demands by Sikh separatists in Western countries for Khalistan, or a separate Sikh homeland.

The Khalistan movement peaked in India in the 1980s with a violent insurgency centred in Sikh-majority Punjab state.

It was quelled by force and has little resonance in India now, but is still popular among some in the Sikh diaspora in countries such as Canada, Australia and the UK.

Canada has the highest number of Sikhs outside Punjab and has seen several pro-Khalistan protests and demonstrations. In June, reports said India had raised a "formal complaint" with Canada about the safety of its diplomats there.

In Wednesday's statement, Delhi said that some recent threats were directed at its diplomats and some Indians "who oppose the anti-India agenda".

"Indian nationals are, therefore, advised to avoid travelling to regions and potential venues in Canada that have seen such incidents," it said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that intelligence agencies were investigating whether "agents of the government of India" were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen - India had designated him a terrorist in 2020.

Nijjar was shot dead in his vehicle by two masked gunmen outside a Sikh temple on 18 June in British Columbia.

"Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty," Mr Trudeau told the Canadian parliament on Monday.

India reacted strongly, saying that Canada was trying to "shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists" who had been given shelter there.

Some Indian media reports claimed the statement from Delhi followed a similar Canadian advisory for its citizens travelling to India. Canada's government confirmed its travel advice for India had been updated on Monday but said it had been "as part of pre-scheduled and routine maintenance in the section on travel health information".

"No new risk information has been added to the India TAA [Travel Advice and Advisories] page," a spokesperson told the BBC. Ottawa's advisory asks its citizens to "exercise a high degree of caution" because of the "risk of terrorist attacks throughout" India.

Flowers, I remember fields of flowers,

soft beneath my heels.

Walking in the sun.

Bheem walked with him through the forest. He keeps Ram updated about what he has been up to, at least the things that he hasn't mentioned in the letters. Jenny walked with Seetha, the both of them deep in conversation, chattering about their own activities.

They end up at the entrance of the village. Passing several children running about, and the communal kitchen alive with the fire and smoke lifting into the air. The sun slowly disappears into the horizon, leaving only streaks of warm light in the sky.

“So that’s the team I was telling you about,” Bheem points to a clearing, several men are engaged in military training. “Currently Lacchu’s training them, I oversee once in a while. In a few months they’ll be ready for their first mission.”

Ram peers into the crowd and found the man who he had tortured for information standing in front of the group. Every so often he delves into the lines of men, correcting postures and adjusting the form. So, his name is Lacchu.

“Want to visit them?” Bheem offers.

He thought about the awkwardness of confronting Lacchu. Plus he just arrived. Does he really want to raise hostility this early in his visit? So, for the sake of maintaining some of the peace, he said, “Maybe another time.”

Bheem raises his eyebrows but does not ask any question.

So they walked to Bheem’s cottage instead. Jenny has her own hut and she had invited Seetha to stay with her during their visit. Seetha accepted.

That means Ram will be staying with Bheem.

After putting his belongings where Bheem had directed him to, Ram wanders around the house. It’s not a massive place, but it is definitely Bheem’s. There’s not a lot of his personal belongings, only the essentials like clothing and a short table where some books and documents are piled on top. There’s a door to the backyard, a pot of fresh water stands beside it. Ram walks to the backyard.

He found Bheem hunched over the soil. Beside him, the hyacinth they found in the forest last time has thrived into thick shrubs of purple flowers. Bheem truly hadn’t lied when he said no plants will perish when he’s around.

Bheem finishes planting the white alyssum Ram had given him. He turns around and smiles as he notices Ram’s presence.

“It’s beautiful already,” Bheem exclaimed, “Can’t wait for it to grow.”

Ram could watch that smile for the rest of time and he won’t get sick of it.

“It’s getting late, we should clean up and rest,” Bheem suggested. Ram nodded in agreement. He let Bheem herded him to a small opening at the side of the cottage. A big pot of water stood beside a small fireplace. Bheem boiled some water and soaked soap beans in them. Then he left Ram to cleans up.

When Ram enters the main room, Bheem is tidying an extra mat beside the one already in the room when he first arrived. He’s not sure why but his cheeks are heating up at the thought of sleeping that close to Bheem.

It’s not even that weird. Back in Delhi, sometimes Bheem will stay over in his house. Most of the time Bheem will just sleep on the floor. But sometimes Ram will insist he take the bed, while Ram sleep on the floor. Sometimes the both of them were just so exhausted, they both just passed out on the bed. He’s not sure why today is any different. Nevertheless it’s apparent that his heart rate is still accelerating.

He scolds himself to please, just be normal.

After Bheem finishes, he brings Ram to get their food at the communal kitchen. Ram watches as the people fuss over Bheem. The village healers surrounded Seetha and exchanged knowledge. Even the raiding team’s men chats along with Jenny, praising her for working as an informant, working behind enemy’s lines.

Ram is content watching the people he loves having the time of their lives. He feels just slightly lonely in that crowd. The disadvantage of people considering you to be a half god, a legend, is that it puts a distance between you and them. Usually Ram won’t mind people ignoring him. But this is Bheem’s people. It feels like their approval of him holds more weight than others. Luckily, the soft smile Bheem wears the whole evening distracts him from the stinging pinch in his heart.

The next day Ram has to fulfil his promise to meet Bheem’s raiding team. The men are excited. They’re so filled with idealism and long for justice, for freedom to come to their homeland. They ask him questions and insist he oversee their training for the day.

Lacchu was there too. Lacchu will talk to Bheem, and help correct poses like he did the day before. He didn’t do anything particularly hostile. But he is also pretending that Ram did not exist either. After what Ram did to him, this should be considered hospitality, though.

It was past noon when they all took a break. Lacchu immediately parted ways with them, which just emphasised that he won’t be wasting any more time than needed to deal with Ram. Despite knowing he absolutely deserves this treatment, Ram has to push a bitter taste down.

Bheem somehow misses Ram’s pained expression, because he directed Ram to the communal kitchen to fetch their lunch. Leave it to Bheem to make sure Ram never misses his meal.

“Loki-akka!” Bheem greets the woman nursing the fire under a big pot of rice. “I’m here for lunch!”.

She laughs, “Sure, sure. Go have a seat, I’ll fetch a plate.”

He and Ram sat beside the low table nearby. He watches as the children play under the shades of trees. He has a flashback of Bheem and him playing with the Delhi’s children. Part of him felt like he’s not only accompanying them to play, but also is playing with them. Doing things he hadn’t got the chance to do as a child. Being around Bheem tends to make him experience new, amazing things.

Loki-akka comes to the table bringing a big plate of rice and bread. She fetched another plate and put it on another table nearby. She then calls on the kids, announcing that they got to eat their lunch. Hurricanes of limbs and yelps invade the table beside him. The kids quickly wash their hands and take a spot around the table.

Bheem began to eat, so he followed as well. They watched as the kids started ravaging their meals. At some point a couple of kids had begun quarrelling over a piece of chicken. Bheem laughs at that while Loki-akka tries to calm both of the kids. The two kids refuse to let go of the chicken and Loki-akka is clearly running out of patience. She took the chicken from both kids and is ready to scold both of them. Before the whole ordeal turns into a crying match, Ram takes the chicken from his plate and offers it to the kids.

“Here,” he waves it in front of the kid who’s clearly the closest to tears. “I’ve got extras.”

The kid beams for a moment, but the smile quickly dies down as she notices the person offering the food.

“I don’t want it,” she said. The boy who had been wrestling the previous chicken from her quickly took the chicken from Ram’s hand instead.

“You don’t like chicken anymore?” Ram tried to joke. He recognizes this girl as well, he just hopes she does not recognize him.

“I don’t like you,” she scooted farther from him, “You’re a villain.”

Loki-akka inhales a sharp breath nearby, as Bheem stops eating at all. They all went silent for a moment, except some kids that clearly have no interest in following their conversations. They’d rather finish their lunch instead.

“Malli,” Loki-akka’s voice sounded edged, “You can’t say that. Apologise to your anna.”

“I’m not in the wrong!,” Malli insisted, “He hurted Bheem-anna before. He might do it again!”

“Malli!” Loki-akka raises her voice. Even some of the kids previously occupied by their food started staring at them.

“You’re not my anna,” Malli glares at Ram, “Never will be.”

With that she stood up and ran away.

“Oh! That girl will send me to an early grave,” Loki-akka clicks her tongue in frustration. “My apologies, she’s still recovering from..”. From the trauma that you helped cause, is probably what she might have said. But since she’s too polite for that kind of remark, Loki-akka didn’t finish her sentence. Instead she offers him a sympathetic smile and walks away to resume nursing the fire.

That left Ram staring into nothing as Bheem tried to catch his eyes.

“Are you alright?” Bheem cautiously asked.

“Yeah,” Ram tried to fight the stinging in his eyes, “Yeah. I’m full actually. So-”

He stood up and left for Bheem’s cottage.

For a moment he does nothing except sit on that mat and stares at the wall.

Malli’s right. He’s a villain. He’s not going to be accepted here. Not after he hurt Bheem, the person most beloved by the whole village. Not after he almost caught Malli in the cross-fire. Not after he tortures Lacchu, who hadn’t want to do anything but save Malli.

He’s not sure how to look at any of the villager’s faces without his cheeks burning up in shame.

A knock comes from the door. Bheem appears on the doorway.

“It’s your house,” Ram sighs, “You don’t have to knock.”

“Well, let’s pretend I just knock before entering my house all the time, just for fun,” Bheem said.

Ram shakes his head in disbelief, too tired to laugh at that.

Bheem takes a seat beside him. He sat so close that their shoulders knocked at each other. Even that simple touch is already calming Ram down.

“Thought you might want company,” Bheem murmurs.

“No, I-” Ram chokes on a sob, “No, I actually deserved that.”

Bheem offers his upturned palm, and Ram just has to take it. Just this once he wants to accept Bheem’s help to collect himself, so he does not break down completely.

“They need time to heal,” Bheem stated, “They have every right to take as much time as they need to heal. They’ve been through so much after all.”

Ram nodded in agreement. He’s not sure if by ‘them’ Bheem is referring to Loki-akka and Malli, or to the entire village. They all had been traumatized by the whole kidnapping incident after all.

“You can’t demand them to accept you immediately,” Bheem continued, and he is so right except this reality is also quite painful to swallow, “But what you can do, is to accept yourself first.”

Ram turns his head to face Bheem, his gaze filled with questions.

“I don’t deserve acceptance, though,” Ram whispered, “I did many bad things. Since when does a villain deserve healing?”.

Bheem squeezes Ram’s palm in his hand, “Oh, but you’re not a villain. A villain doesn’t tend to feel bad when they do bad things. But you do. So you do deserve healing. And it can’t start unless you accept yourself first.”

“That man that’s training your team, Bheem,” Ram sighs, “Lacchu. Remember when I was searching for a man all over Delhi? He was the one I was searching for. I tortured him for information, Bheem. I was ready to keep Malli under house imprisonment for the rest of her life in the Scotts house, for a mere promotion. How can you not be disgusted at me?”.

Bheem took both of Ram’s hands into his, “I know about Lacchu. He told me once we got reunited. He’s rightfully angry at you, but after Seetha’s story, he knows that you didn’t have much choice either. All he asks is that he doesn’t want to interact often with you. And that is fair, right? As for the disgusted part, I thought I told you this. I can’t hate you. I love you too much to spare a room for hate in my heart. And did you not end up trying to help Malli? You can’t rewind time to fix the past. But you tried to be better in the future. To be honest, that’s the only thing we all could do. Live for the future. You look too long at your past and you’ll stand still while life passes you by. I don’t want that for you.”

Ram shrugged, “Lacchu has been watching me roaming around his village for the whole day and he’s patient enough not to kick me out immediately. But one scold from Malli and suddenly I’m the one sulking? I don’t deserve your sympathy, Bheem.”

Bheem smacked his side and Ram looked at him in surprise.

“Stop that. You’re deserving of my love. It’s a non-negotiable part of our friendship. You better accept that. And while you’re at it, you better start to accept that you deserve to have a good future as well.”.

“Or what?” Ram’s lips start to quirk up to the side. His breath is less heavy, and he can feel his shoulder loses its tense. He can stand to lose the love of the whole world, as long as he still gets Bheem’s love.

“Or I’ll tickle you to death!” Bheem announced as he lunged to make true of his promise. Ram tries to wrestle out of his death hug but can’t help but start laughing.

A quick knock and the sound of the door opening stops their wrestle. They tried to sit properly as the person at the door made their way inside.

“Hey you guys,” Jenny said, “Seetha told me today’s Dhanteras, so she wants to take me shopping in the-” Her words stopped as she saw Bheem and Ram still somewhat tangled with each other.

“Ah, we’re interrupting them,” Seetha emerges from behind Jenny. Her eyes glinting as if she’s holding in a laughter.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Jenny sighs, “Anyway, if you’re not too busy being joined at the hips, we’re going to the city to shop. If you want to join, meet us at the village’s entrance in ten minutes.”

“Now that’s out of the way,” Seetha steers Jenny to the door, “Let’s leave before we witness any more weird things.”

Jenny barks a laugh at that.

Ram loses the ability to speak for a moment.

“Is she…uh, okay with this?” he asked finally.

“Who? Jenny?” Bheem questioned, “Yeah, of course. Why wouldn’t she?”.

“Well I thought you both have a crush on each other, figured she’d be jealous or something with us being so close or whatever,” Ram tried to sound as neutral as possible.

“Oh. About that,” Bheem actually blushes, “We kind of…drifted apart.”

“Wait, what?” Ram is genuinely concerned, “Are you okay? Don’t tell me you messed it up so hard with the flirting that she got disinterested.”

Bheem bites the side of his cheek, “Shut up, you’re not a master of flirting as far as I can tell. She actually got into trouble for the whole nails in the wheel shenanigans.”.

“Oops,” Ram tuts, but he actually feels a bit bad.

“But anyway,” Bheem continues, “We try to go out together for a while. Didn’t work. Apparently we’re better as friends. So here we are.”

Ram has a surge of irrational fear down his spine. He hopes that he and Bheem weren't just better as friends.

“We should get going,” Bheem tugs at him after a while, “Nothing better to cheer you up than to see fresh scenery. Let’s go!”.

The city’s streets are jam packed with stalls.

The four of them just wander around for a while. Bheem dragged them from one stall to another in search of the candies to give to the village’s children.

“Perhaps we can ask for a truce to Malli,” Bheem picks several types of candies from the merchant’s boxes. Ram has the urges to buy all of them if that can grant him Malli’s forgiveness, except he knows full well it doesn’t work like that. Forgiveness and trust are things that are quite hard to be bought.

They resume their walk until they come to a stall selling bangles and earrings. Seetha drags Jenny to select their choices of accessories.

“I somehow have the flashback of shopping with Bheem, he ends up buying a bangle for Malli instead,” Jenny hums.

“I did not buy a bangle for Malli,” Bheem declared, “I made it.”

“Yeah, because he’s romantic like that,” Seetha comments nonchalantly. “Is that why you lost your girlfriend, you ol’ snooze?”.

“Hey!” Bheem protested, “Jenny, Tell her it was a mutual decision!”.

“Yeah, yeah,” Jenny retorts, “It was a mutually made decision after he considers that we’re better as friends, and after I consider that he’d made a terrible boyfriend.”

Ram has the impulse to defend that Bheem would have made a great boyfriend. He did not get to voice it because Jenny suddenly jumps and turns around, panic displayed in her eyes.

Seetha moves first and asks Jenny, “What? What happened?”.

Jenny points to the hollering crowd of boys standing not too far from them. They yell obscenities at Jenny and point at her.

Jenny looked like she wanted to vomit, “I think one of them just slapped my behind.”

One of the foolish boys approaches Seetha and tugged at her saree, trying to pull her closer.

“Want to have fun with me, darling?” he said. Eyes clearly looking vulgarly at her.

Bheem moved forward and the boy finally took notice of him and Ram.

“These two’s your girls, brother?” he raised two hands up, “If so, apologies. Thought that they were alone.”

“They’re not our girls, but-” Bheem enunciated his words slowly, voice laced with barely contained anger.

“Oh!,” the boy laughed as if this whole thing were mere jokes, “Then it’s fine if I took them to have some fun with us?” He points at his friends, still hooting improper words at Jenny.

Ram is standing still, fury starts boiling inside him. Whether they are their girls or not, these boys are not treating their fellow humans with respect and it is unacceptable.

Before he nor the boy could react, something flashes forward and hits the boy’s face.

A loud crack made Ram unconsciously wince. Then he took in the scene of Seetha chasing that boy away.

“You want to have fun? Is that why you harass my friend?” she yelled, bangles rustling in her fist. Whenever she catches up with one of the boys, she lands her punch powered with those iron bangles. The chiming noise of the bangles mixed with bones cracking sound is so absurd that the rest of the group just kind of stands there and stares. She chases them all the way to the road’s branch. The boys ducked into the street’s darkness and Seetha finally gave up her chase. She stomps her way back to the group and checks on Jenny.

“Are you okay?” She touches Jenny's side cautiously. Jenny thoughtlessly nodded.

“Those senseless boys!” Seetha exclaims, “If they come back here I’ll beat them to death!”.

“Uhh, miss?”.

“What?!” she barks her reply.

The stall’s vendor just stares with some fear in his eyes, “Uhh, sorry, but are you going to pay for that?”.

He points at the misshapen, bloodied bangles in Seetha's grip. Seetha looks at him and the bangles a few times before snapping back to reality, “Oh, yes. Apologies for the ruckus. How much are these for?”.

Seetha paid for the broken bangles and some pairs of new ones. The night is decidedly ruined, so they opt for walking back home instead.

“Here,” Seetha hands Jenny the newly bought bangles, “Sorry you have to go through that.”

Jenny stares at her for a moment, her eyes unreadable, then she reaches for the broken bangles in Seetha's other hand instead.

“I want this one,” she takes the broken bangles.

Seetha looks up in confusion, “Why? It’s all bent, you can’t wear that.”

“Sure, I can,” Jenny firmly insists as she fits the broken bangles into her wrists, “You fought tooth and nail to get me these ones. It’s my new treasure now.”

Seetha blushes, her face went bright red, “O-oh. Uh, sure. Thank you?”.

“Thank you to you too,” Jenny replied with a soft expression on her face.

Ram and Bheem exchange a confused look but wordlessly agree that they better not comment anything.

After the whole ordeal, Ram thought they’d all slept like the dead all day, but that morning he found Bheem already awake at dawn. The sun barely crept into the sky but Bheem’s standing near the door, buckets of water, mop and broom at his disposal.

He lets his head clear up for a moment before he remembers what’s the day’s occasion.

“Cleaning up for chhoti diwali?” he yawns, still somewhat sleepy.

“Correct,” Bheem beams for some reason. There’s no way anyone is excited to brush their home from floor to ceiling, but there Bheem is, a big smile plastered to his face as he offers Ram a broom.

Ram relents and crawls out of the mat. He helps Bheem roll the mat and put them aside so they can start sweeping the house.

After the sweeping comes the hard part, which was to mop the whole place clean. It involves buckets and buckets of water, and a sore back from bending down to mop the floor. Every so often Ram has to throw away the dirty waters outside, and he’ll be greeted by Seetha or Jenny for Jenny’s hut, both of them also hard at work cleaning the place.

By noon all of them were sprawled across the house’s lawn, tired from the day’s activities. Bheem was pulling a last minute groom for the flowers in the backyard. Apparently he bought a water lily when they went to the city, so he’s now fussing over the new addition to his garden, making sure it has enough water and all that. So Ram’s just sitting on the front lawn, exchanging groans with anyone who was passing, their conversations basically going, Are you tired? Me too, I’m tired too. At one point Seetha crosses the road to bring him water, but almost pour the water down his face because she was so out of breath that her hand’s shaking. After that no one tried to move for a while, trying to regain their energy and calm their breath.

Fate seems to be in a joking mood that day, because that’s the moment a kid ran across the lawn. She tried to climb a tree in panic, which means she failed miserably. Ram’s brain was sluggish, his overworked body still dealing with the tiredness fatigue, but he finally saw the thing that had alarmed the girl. That thing is turning so fast at the corner that it slips and falls, but it quickly gets up its feet again. That thing is a wild boar, and it is readying itself to charge forward.

Now it’s Ram’s turn to panic. He doesn’t know what to do, his movement still slow from weariness, but the boar is definitely not waiting until he can plan a reasonable course of action. So he does the next best thing, which in retrospect is actually the worst thing ever. He throws himself in the course of the boar.

Ram can feel the boar’s ploughing through him. He bet this is what getting hit by a truck felt like. His limbs do their best to wrestle against the boar, trying to steer farther from where the kid is. He feels that he’s losing his footing, so he does his last ditch move and tries to break the boar’s neck. The boar’s struggling under him but clearly still has a lot of fight in it. He heard someone yell as he felt the boar’s tusk digging itself into his stomach. The flare of pain only feeds his adrenaline. With his last burst of energy, he twists the boar’s head until he can hear the bones breaking inside. This also means he’s yanking out the boar’s tusk out of his stomach. Blood seeped into his clothes and he felt lightheaded. The good thing is his last ditch move works and the boar fell limp beside his foot. He did not have the time to congratulate himself because he soon followed the boar’s lead and passed out on top of it.

As Ram wakes up, he almost wishes he didn’t.

There’s a throbbing pain on his sides and the fatigue hasn’t gone away either. Overall it’s quite an unpleasant waking up experience.

“Ah, you’re awake,” a small voice beside him spoke, “I thought you’ll spend another day in a coma.”

He tried to follow where the sound came from, but his headache said otherwise. So he just croaks, “Yep. Awake. A hundred percent awake. Hi.”

A small face looms over him, “You’re in pretty bad shape.”

“Gee, thanks for your observation,” he huffs.

“How are you still annoying despite being currently in death’s door,” the kid scoffs.

His eyes clears up and he finally registers that the small face belongs to none other but Malli.

“Oh, hey you,” he finally said.

“The only reason I didn’t stab you again in your sleep is because Bheem-anna would be disappointed in me,” Malli announces. She shuffles uncomfortably from where she’s sitting, then continues, “And also because you saved me. So thanks for that, I guess.”

Ram vaguely remembers the girl that’s trying to climb the tree in panic, “Oh, that was you trying to imitate a broken legged goat on that tree?”.

Malli huffs but Ram’s suspicious that she’s holding a laughter rather than being offended.

“Shut up,” she fumed, “I’ll call Bheem-anna to check on you, but only after he finishes putting up diyas outside.”

“Are you…prioritising a candle over me not dying?” Ram asked, he’ll laugh if that won’t make his whole body ache.

“Yeah, that’s your punishment,” Malli insists, “No way I’m letting you get in the way of my anna getting his yearly blessings.”

“Also,” Malli poked her tiny finger into Ram’s cheek, “You’re not dying anymore, Seetha-akka basically yanks you out of the afterlife. You’re okay now, crybaby.”

This kid is so disrespectful but somehow Ram can’t bring himself to get angry at her.

“Okay, then. If I died, however, I’m haunting you forever,” Ram said.

Malli stood up so she once again loomed over Ram, “Sure you will.”

Then, perhaps Malli got scared of being haunted, or maybe it’s something else. But she puts a few candies she must have gotten from Bheem in Ram's hand.

She talks quickly in a harsh tone, as if embarrassed, “Happy Diwali anna, sorry you have to miss it. And, thank you.”

Then she ran out of the door, all the while yelling, “Enjoy your stab wound!”.

That impertinent girl.

Ram sighs as he feels the weight of the candies in his hand. He tastes sweetness in his mouth despite the fact that he hadn’t eaten anything since that morning. From outside the house, he can hear the faint sound of laughing and music being played. Light from the bonfire somewhere out there flickers across the room every so often. The booming sound of the firecrackers being lit up is not helping his stinging headache. But all in all, not the worst day he’s ever had in his life.

DHAKA, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge of Bangladesh's caretaker government on Thursday, hoping to help heal the country that was convulsed by weeks of violence, forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and flee to neighbouring India.

Known as the "banker to the poor", Yunus is the pioneer of the global microcredit movement. The Grameen Bank he founded won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for helping lift millions from poverty by providing tiny loans to the rural poor who are too impoverished to gain attention from traditional banks.

As chief adviser of the caretaker government, he is, however, tasked with bringing stability back to the country which witnessed some of its worst violence in decades and then hold fresh parliamentary elections.

"The brutal, autocratic regime is gone," Yunus said in a televised address to the nation after taking charge. "Tomorrow, with the rising sun, democracy, justice, human rights, and full freedom of fearless expression will be enjoyed by all, regardless of party affiliation. That is our goal."

Earlier on Thursday, on his arrival in Dhaka following medical treatment in Paris, Yunus said he would govern it with the guidance of students who backed him for the role in the caretaker government.

A harsh critic of Hasina, Yunus became emotional and seemed to hold his tears back at the airport as he referred to a student he said had been shot during the protests and that sacrifice could not be forgotten.

Hasina's flight from the country she ruled for 20 of the last 30 years after winning a fourth term in January triggered jubilation and violence as crowds stormed and ransacked her official residence.

Many Hindu homes, temples and businesses were vandalised after Hasina's departure, and hundreds in the minority community have tried unsuccessfully to flee to India this week. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council said a schoolteacher was killed and 45 other people hurt.

Many Hindus have traditionally supported Hasina's Awami League party, which identifies as secular.

POWER VACUUM

Yunus' swearing-in plugged the power vacuum in the South Asian country of 170 million people with the fourth-largest Muslim population in the world, created after Hasina resigned and flew to India on Monday.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to  Yunus and 13 advisers who will help him govern, at a brief ceremony in the official presidential residence.

Three more advisers will be sworn in at a later date, officials said. Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, two student leaders who are both in their mid-20s and led the protests, were among the 13 who joined the caretaker government.

The ceremony started with a minute's silence to honour the hundreds who were killed in the protests and clashes that erupted in July.

The army played a critical role towards the end of the crisis, conveying to Hasina that troops would not open fire on civilians to enforce a curfew declared on Sunday, sealing her fate, Reuters reported.

Hasina's Awami League party does not figure in the interim government. In a Facebook post, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy said the party had not given up, and was ready to hold talks with opponents and the interim government.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted two national elections after the arrest of its leaders and has demanded fresh elections in three months.

PROTECT HINDUS, INDIA URGES

Hasina is sheltering in the New Delhi area, a development that Yunus said caused anger at India among some Bangladeshis. India's foreign ministry said it had no update on Hasina's travel plans and it was up to her to "take things forward".

The neighbours have longstanding cultural and business ties and New Delhi played a key role in the 1971 war with Pakistan which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Yunus and said New Delhi was committed to working with Dhaka to fulfil the "shared aspirations" of the people of both countries for "peace, security and development".

"We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities," he said.

The student-led movement that ousted Hasina grew out of protests against quotas in government jobs that spiralled in July, provoking a violent crackdown that drew global criticism, though the government denied using excessive force.

The protests were fuelled also by harsh economic conditions and political repression. The COVID-19 pandemic damaged the $450 billion economy after years of strong growth, leading to high inflation, unemployment and shrinking reserves.

It pushed the Hasina government to seek a $4.7 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to speak in parliament today as the debate on the No-Confidence Motion — moved by the Congress against the BJP-led Central government — entered Day 2.

The Opposition, which has brought the No-Confidence Motion despite lacking in numbers, admitted that it was a method to compel Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on Manipur, which has dominated the monsoon session of parliament.

Rahul Gandhi, who was reinstated in parliament yesterday, is addressing parliament. Earlier, reports had claimed that the senior Congress leader would start the debate on the no-confidence motion backed by the Opposition bloc INDIA. But when the House met, it was Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi who initiated the debate.

Union Ministers — Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani and Jyotiraditya Scindia are expected to speak in Lok Sabha today. Kiren Rijiju, who participated in the debate yesterday, said the Opposition will regret bringing the No-Confidence Motion because it comes at the “wrong time and the wrong manner”, given India’s current stature in the world.

The Prime Minister will reply to the debate on Thursday. He chaired the BJP’s Parliamentary Party meeting yesterday ahead of the big vote. Taking a swipe at the INDIA alliance, the Prime Minister reportedly said that this is not a vote to express distrust in the government, but to see who can trust whom in the opposition. “It’s a test of their own internal trust,” he reportedly said.

In recent weeks, PM Modi has frequently attacked the opposition bloc for calling itself INDIA, accusing the parties, particularly the Congress, of attempting a rebranding to whitewash their past record as the former UPA or United Progressive Alliance.

Gaurav Gogoi said ‘INDIA’ was forced to bring the No-Confidence Motion against the government to break Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vow of silence” on Manipur. He alleged that a government which talks about “one India” has created “two Manipurs — one living in the hills and the other in the valley”.

Home Minister Amit Shah, during a discussion on the Delhi Services bill on Monday, accused the Opposition of running away from a debate on Manipur. “The question is Manipur situation and what steps the government is taking there, not a show of strength by voting. If you want voting, I dare you to make this bill fall through voting,” Mr Shah said.

The session, which started on July 20, has been continually disrupted by Opposition protests. The opposition contends that in view of the 170-plus deaths, injuries and displacements of thousands of people since the ethnic violence broke out in May, there is nothing more urgent that can demand the Prime Minister’s attention.

The government has argued that after major violence took place in Manipur in 1993 and 1997, no statement was made in the Parliament in one case and in the other, the junior home minister had given a statement.

The Lok Sabha currently has 539 members who will vote in the motion, of which the majority mark will be 270. The BJP alone has 301, while its allies have had 31 more votes. The opposition INDIA alliance has 143 while parties like KCR’s BRS, YS Jagan Reddy’s YSRCP, and Naveen Patnaik’s BJD have a combined strength of 70. YSRCP (22) and BJD (12) are also expected to back the government.

PM Modi takes stock of Manipur situation

Earlier in the day, Shah met Modi and updated him on the ground situation in the state as also the discussions he had with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took stock of the situation in ethnic violence- hit Manipur at a meeting with senior members of his Cabinet and top bureaucrats here. Among those present at the meeting were Union ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and Hardeep Puri.

The interaction came a day after the prime minister returned from his trips to the US and Egypt. Modi is now personally overseeing the situation in Manipur. Earlier in the day, Shah met Modi and updated him on the ground situation in the state as also the discussions he had with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday.

At the meeting, Shah and senior officials, including the Principal Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, P K Mishra, gave a detailed briefing on the efforts to restore peace in Manipur, which has been wracked by violence for the past 51 days. The role of security forces in not only ensuring area domination but also providing humanitarian assistance was also mentioned.

Apart from Manipur, Shah briefed the prime minister on the steps taken so far by the Central and state governments to tackle the flood situation in Assam.

The meeting which went on for over half an hour also touched upon Nirmala Sitharaman’s fiery response to former US President Barack Obama’s recent comments on minority rights in India. Petroleum prices and the potential for renewing NDA’s electoral alliance with other regional parties, too, briefly figured in the meeting.

Worry over changing nature of violence

“The changing nature of violence — from the exchange of fire in the peripheral areas to the civil unrest in the valley districts — has become a matter of concern for Amit Shah ji,” Biren Singh said.
