Suggested tour: Delhi Sightseeing Tour
VISIT INDIA GATE
Tumblr media
India gate represents delhi so surely a walk around this monument is one of the best things to do in delhi. Looking at this mammoth structure surely makes one proud as an indian. A leisurely walk across the adjacent garden is refreshing and soothing, particularly post-sunset. One can also relax on the grass and munch on chips and ice cream to make the evening joyful.
Good to know: India Gate stands in the centre of a large park – the park is always open, and entrance is free. It is a popular picnic spot for Delhiites and is usually busy, making it a good place for people-watching.
EXPLORE THE RED FORT
Tumblr media
If there ever were a fortification that can be a symbol of Indian history, it would be the Red Fort aka Lal Qila. Stories of triumph and defeat, glory and conspiracy are etched in every corner of this red sandstone and marble complex built by Shah Jahan in 1639. Architecturally, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an everlasting icon of the Mughal style blended with design elements from India and Central Asia.
Good to know: Red Fort is open Tuesday to Sunday from sunrise to sunset. Entry fee for foreign visitors is priced USD 7, and there is an additional fee for filming. Prices for the daily light and sound show are USD 1.
Fun fact: Red Fort was originally known as Qila-e-Mubarak, meaning 'Blessed Fort' and is the largest historical monument in Delhi.
RELAX AT LODI GARDENS
Tumblr media
One of Delhi’s best-loved parks, Lodhi Gardens is a mesmerising mix of lush greenery and historical relics. Plus, it is in the proximity of some well-known attractions on the tourist circuit. When in Delhi, start your day with a walk in Lodhi Gardens and you would join the ranks of heads of state and celebrities who consider it as one of the top activities to do in Delhi. As you stroll across the garden, take in the quiet charms of Sikandar Lodi’s tomb and look out for Athpula Bridge dating back to Emperor Akbar’s time. The park is open all year round and entry is free.
Good to know: Lodi Gardens is open every day from morning to evening (from around 05:00 to 20:00). Entrance is free and there is no fee for photography either. The nearest metro station is JLN Stadium.
DO NOT MISS THE LOTUS TEMPLE
Tumblr media
The Lotus Temple, a sanctuary for those looking for some peace and quiet, is considered to be one of the most recognizable landmarks in Delhi because of its unique architecture. The temple has been designed to resemble the shape of a lotus, with 27 petals created out of marble. The temple might be dedicated to the Bahá’í people, but people from all sorts of religious backgrounds come here for worship. Don’t forget to leave your shoes in the shoe room before entering the temple and spend some time in its beautifully manicured gardens
Good to know: The Lotus Temple is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:30.
SPEND SOME TIME AT HUMAYUN’S TOMB
Tumblr media
Persian designed, the tomb was built in the mid 1500’s to house the Islamic Mughal emperor known as Humayun. Along with Humayun, there are quite a few other Mughal rulers whose graves are also within the building.
You can walk around the surrounding gardens and then proceed to climb a flight of stairs to the main deck. Then you can walk around the inside of the building and see the many marble tombstones. Also, located at the entrance of the attraction is a small museum showcasing some old photographs including explanations of the tomb and its history.
Good to know: The monument is open daily from sunrise to sunset. There is a charge of USD 7 for foreign visitors. There is no charge for photography but a fee is payable for filming. The nearest metro station is JLN Stadium.
GO TO QUTUB MINAR
Tumblr media
Built in 1192 with a height of about 237 feet, Qutub Minar is the tallest tower in the world and one of the prominent UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Delhi. Although influenced by a famous minaret in Afghanistan, the design of this tapering edifice incorporates uniquely Indian motifs across its height and flanges. The key attractions here are an iron pillar that never rusts and the Qutub Festival that takes place every year in November or December.
Good to know: Foreign visitors must pay an entrance fee of ₹ 30 for Indians - ₹ 500 for foreigners
EXPLORE OLD-WORLD ASTRONOMY AT JANTAR MANTAR
Tumblr media
An equinoctial sundial and observatory that features 13 astronomical apparatuses built on a scale that is hard to imagine, Jantar Mantar is one of the best places to visit in Delhi with family and kids. Though the complex was built way back in 1724, some of the instruments are still well-preserved. The Samrat Yantra can pinpoint the location of planetary bodies and the direction of the North Pole while the Rama Yantra was meant to study the heights of stars from the surface of the earth.
PAY RESPECT AT RAJ GHAT
Tumblr media
Any trip to India is never complete without paying your homage to the founding father of modern India, Mahatma Gandhi. The leader of the Indian Freedom Movement left his mark all over the globe because of his ideals of non-violence and his attitude of caring for others. The Raj Ghat is a beautiful memorial that has been dedicated to Gandhi and is the very place where he was cremated. While visiting the Raj Ghat, walk into its central courtyard in order to walk around the black marble memorial.
Good to know: The Gandhi Memorial is open daily, 06:30 – 18:00; there is no entrance fee. The nearest metro station is Kashmiri Gate.
AKSHARDHAM TEMPLE
Tumblr media
An epitome of brilliant architecture, Akshardham is one of Delhi’s finest structures that is way different from your typical temples. Other than being a place of worship, this sanctum educates visitors about the life of Swaminarayan (to whom the temple is dedicated) through the use of vivid techniques like cinema and interactive activities. To make it interesting for small kids visiting the temple, there is also a boat ride that takes you through a lit cave depicting the story of Swaminarayan through electronic human figurines and narration. Witnessing the colorful light and sound show at night here is also one of the most exciting activities to do in Delhi.
Good to know: The Akshardham Temple opens at 9:30 and last entry is at 18:30. Entry to the temple complex is free but tickets are required to the exhibition and the Musical Fountain. Children under 4 are free. Photography is forbidden inside the complex and all electronic equipment must be left in the cloakroom
BOATING ON NAINI LAKE
Tumblr media
Delhi’s own Naini Lake is open to the public after around five years. The water body offers a peaceful spot to spend a lazy day amid the hustle and bustle of the city. One of Delhi’s largest lakes, the newly-revamped attraction offers paddle-boat rides, a perfect activity.

December 18, 2022
Hello from Amritsar, the holy city of the Sikhs, in the heart of the Indian Punjab. I told many of you I would do a blog while I’m on this adventure—and tonight I feel the courage to make a start of it- with the fog of jet lag finally lifting, and things looking a bit more hopeful in the accommodation department.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a relatively painless journey to the other side of the globe (170.00 well spent for exit row seats), David and I arrived in Delhi late in the evening of December 13. It was a challenge for our driver to find the Vandana Guest House- but we were warmly greeted by the inn keeper, who assured me that the late hour was no problem: he was up watching the World Cup match. The next morning, a car brought us to the Fulbright office in Delhi, where I had an orientation with Priyanjana Gosh and Pavitra Soram. After so many emails with them over the past months, it was wonderful to finally meet these two fabulous women in person.
Tumblr media
A high point of the day was catching up with Executive Director Adam Grotsky, whom we first met during my Fulbright in 2010. We learned that Adam shares our love of dogs, and he introduced us to Patrick (the three-legged pup) and Juan – both rescued from the streets of Delhi. I will confess that I fell hopelessly in love with Patrick at first sight.
The next day, we headed to the train station for the six-hour journey to Amritsar. I’ve spent a fair amount of time in India, and this was not my first encounter with train travel. But trying to board a train with a ridiculous amount of luggage (yeah- we overpacked, and I also have all of my props for The Belle of Amherst), and a platform that required a steep climb up one staircase and a descent at the far end of the station required some help. The porters were more than willing- in fact aggressive in their attempts to assist. But our driver Ajay was not ready to allow the porters to charge us what he felt was a ridiculous price. After some unsuccessful negotiating, Ajay removed his pristine white jacket and insisted on helping us get to the platform (with the help of one porter, who carried two of our incredibly heavy bags on his head.) Ajay got us to the platform and adamantly refused to accept a tip. He was a lifesaver.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Amritsar Shatabdi Express rolled into the station, and with the help of two porters, we got our luggage safely stored in the overhead racks. Six hours later, after crossing the Punjab plain, we arrived in Amritsar. After a generously-spirited porter helped us unload our luggage to the platform, David left me to guard our pile while he went in search of assistance. And then, out of the fog (literally)- our driver appeared. After that long and stressful journey he was, as my mother would say, “A sight for sore eyes.” He immediately gathered up an unreasonable share of our luggage, and soon we were deposited in his car and on our way to our temporary digs at the Fairfield Marriot Hotel.
Tumblr media
The next day, we headed to the stunning campus of Khalsa College, which will be my place of work for the next six months. We were warmly welcomed by Dr. Devender Singh, the registrar of the college and head of Cultural and Youth programs. We had a chance to meet the drama students, and they shared a 2-minute section of the play they are currently working on based on the short stories of Manto. It confirmed why I pursued this collaboration in the first place. These students are passionate, hungry, and incredibly brave. I am so excited to get to work with them.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, an in-person look at the guest house accommodations proved that they offered very little privacy or space. I had such high hopes of staying on that peaceful and spacious campus. This was a big disappointment, and the last few days have been stressful as we attempt to find a suitable home for the next six months. My number-one concern: I cannot cross the road in front of the college every day to go to work. I will certainly have some sort of nervous collapse if I have to. If you’ve ever tried to cross a busy road in India, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t…imagine trying to cross a six-lane highway during rush hour (remember Eddie Murphy in Bowfinger)—and in addition to cars and trucks, there are auto rickshaws, bicycles, stray dogs, an occasional cow or wild pig, and the ubiquitous scooter. And they are coming at you from all directions. As my grandson Julian used to say when he was tiny: “No Fank you.”
But thanks to another Fulbrighter who just departed, we were put in touch with Sociology Professor Jasdeep, who immediately dropped most everything to join us on the hunt for a rental. Today, we may have seen the place we will settle on- although we will look at a few more tomorrow before committing. Things will feel a lot less overwhelming once that part of this adventure is settled. (The best part of the place we looked at today: two miniature versions of our beloved Tashi named Oreo and Cocoa. Oreo insisted I hold him as we inspected the apartment—much to the dismay of a very jealous Cocoa.)
Oh- and on a trip to the Trilium Mall yesterday…
I was stung by a bee who had taken up residence in my shoe. Ow.
The stone-faced security guard who patted me down in the private inspection booth reached into my bag, removed my tin of Trader Joe’s Ginger Mints, opened it (I assumed she thought there was something threatening hiding in there), popped two in her mouth, and then told me I could go. I burst out laughing…and she remained stone-faced.
More later!

Dress appropriately. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable materials like cotton. To protect your skin from dangerous UV rays, use a high-SPF sunscreen. 4. Keep your home cool. Fans and air conditioning can help keep your home cool and pleasant. Close your blinds or curtains to keep the sun out during the warmest portion of the day. 5. "Solo Journeys in India: Navigating the Transport Tapestry via tuk-tuks, trains and planes….”
"Solo Journeys in India: Navigating the Transport Tapestry via tuk-tuks, trains and planes….”
Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest’s 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide for women like you who need extra support traveling the world (slowly), one woman at a time.
Please rate this podcast and the Amazon book series, especially Part B on Destinations!
I’ve been traveling solo since 1972 and writing about it since 1993. Now you can experience the Top Selling Book Series: 5 Steps to Solo Travel, a Woman’s Guide to Travel and Destinations in Her Prime, found on Amazon. I recently took a 90-day trip around the world, and this is a special episode on Indian transportation for the solo female.
What are the challenges faced by solo female travelers in India? How can they navigate the transportation system in India? What are the travel tips for exploring India's transport networks as a solo female traveler?
This particular podcast edition is about the "Roads Less Traveled, including a few Solo Female Travel Tips for Exploring India's Transport Networks"
There was a massive train crash while I was in India, and many people were tragically killed. The people I was staying with had friends on those trains, but they were ok. Many of my family members contacted me across the miles to see if I was ok, as it was world news. See the show notes for more on train accidents.
https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india/yearender-2023-tragic-accidents-in-2023-road-rail-accidents-odisha-coromandel-express-andhra-pradesh-train-collision-tragedy-latest-updates-2023-12-22-908419
The world’s largest populated country has transportation challenges. Corruption, bureaucracy, and red tape are also issues. Corrupted officials leverage their control over permits to line their pockets. Income equality is massive. The wealthiest 10% makes up almost 60% of India's income. The future looks brighter.
One airline, Go First, went out of business after I bought my ticket in May 2023. I cannot get a refund because the airline is bankrupt and, therefore, will not honor any purchases of their flights, nor will the ticket agency through which I bought it.
https://www.hindustantimes.com/business/go-first-gets-two-financial-bids-as-part-of-its-bankruptcy-process-101708754354934.html
I arrived in Chennai from a flight originating in Cambodia and transferred through Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent 8 hours in the airport, talking to people from all over the world. Here is a rundown of the travel I did over two weeks in six cities in India.
When going through airport security, you must be on an all-female line. Men and women are not allowed to go through together.
The same thing happened when I went to the Taj Majal. Separate security stations were established, and I even hit my head on that going through, as I am 5’ 10’, so I am taller than most other women.
Overall, I made many transportation mistakes, but they were all to help you make a better trip next time.
My travel mistakes in India: I was lied to by a taxi driver, had a driver with no shoes and no change, got scammed in the main Delhi train station, and had trouble finding a bus to Agra.

How to Get a Bike Rental in Delhi and Plan for Valentine's?
Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, and I'm sure many of you are looking for fun and unusual date ideas to surprise your significant other. As someone who has lived in Delhi for many years, I highly recommend getting a bike on rent in Delhi and taking a romantic ride around the city. Not only is it an affordable and easy option, but cruising around Delhi's iconic sites on a bike just feels extra romantic.
Tumblr media
In this post, I'll share my tips on the best places to get a bike on rent in Delhi, how to plan your Valentine's Day bike route, and some fun ideas to make your bike date extra special. Let's get started.
Where to Rent a Bike in Delhi
Delhi has exploded with options for bike rental in Delhi in recent years. You can rent bikes by the hour or day from local shops and mainstream companies. My top recommendation is:
Don't overlook Rentnhop for bike rental in Delhi! This relatively new company is quickly becoming one of the top options for affordable and convenient bike rentals.
Rentnhop has an easy-to-use website and app where you can view available bikes, compare prices, and book your rental. They offer a wide variety of gear and non-gear bikes delivered right to your doorstep, so no need to travel to a bike shop. Their bikes are high quality too - think premium brands like Triumph, Harley Davidson, etc.
No matter which rental company or shop you choose, I recommend booking at least 2-3 days in advance for Valentine's Day. The bikes book up fast! Most shops have options for gear and non-gear bikes ranging from ₹100-500 per day.
Planning Your Bike Route
The best part about getting a bike rental in Delhi for Valentine's Day is cruising around to all the romantic hotspots! Here is a suggested route that hits some of my personal favorite spots:
Start at India Gate - Roll up to India Gate and Rajpath to soak in the iconic scenery. Don't forget to take a romantic selfie in front of the arch.
Cruise through Lodi Gardens - Make your way to Lodi Gardens to ride down the lush garden paths and admire the Mughal architecture. Stop on the bridge for beautiful lake views.
Ride by Humayun's Tomb - This incredible tomb oozes history and romance. Park the bike and take a quiet stroll through the manicured gardens.
Ride through Hauz Khas Village - Time to get your energy back up! Make a stop in Hauz Khas Village for lunch or coffee at one of the chic cafes.
Watch the Sunset at Safdarjung Tomb - End your bike date by catching the sunset at Safdarjung Tomb. This lesser-known tomb has amazing sunset views.
Of course, you can customize the route however you like. I highly recommend using bike lanes and avoiding busy roads when possible. Also, don't forget to stop for food, drinks, and photos along the way.
Tips for an Extra Special Bike Date
To take your Delhi bike date to the next level, here are some fun tips:
Decorate your bikes with ribbons, flowers, or heart garlands when you pick them up.
Pack a romantic picnic with finger foods, champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries to enjoy at a stop along your route.
Pick up a Polaroid camera and snap cute candid photos all day to gift your date a photo album at the end.
Plan your route to pass by places significant to your relationship, like your first date spot.
Make a romantic Valentine's Day playlist to listen to during your ride. Bluetooth speakers attached to bikes are a fun touch.
Dress up in coordinating outfits or colors. Maybe even get a couple of T-shirts made for the occasion.
End the night with dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the city. Delhi has amazing options.
Getting a bike on rent in Delhi and cruising around Delhi on Valentine's Day is sure to be a memorable experience. You get to act like carefree kids again while also enjoying romantic views and quality time with your loved one. Just don't forget to ride safely and watch for traffic.
Conclusion
I hope these tips help you plan an amazing bike date in Delhi. Let me know if you have any other questions. Wishing you all a very Happy Valentine's Day. Ride safe and make special memories.

Places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days, that aren’t a waste of your time.
Jaipur is one of four most visited vacationer urban communities in Rajasthan (other are Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur) and require at least 2 entire days to investigate its legacy destinations, new attractions, markets and taste Rajasthan food.
Also, for my purposes, there are like in excess of 30 or more vacation spots, and out of them 15 odd locales are a portion of the high priority ones.
Thus, on the off chance that you are arranging a 2 evenings stay in Jaipur, here is my propose of 24 spots to visit in Jaipur in 2 days, alongside a few down to earth tips.
Tip 1: Least expensive (and agreeable) method for showing up in Jaipur from Delhi is Two layer express train @ Rs 450 for every individual AC Mentor.
In addition, I have likewise shared not many more destinations, assuming you choose to remain one more (Day 3) in Jaipur.
The 3 most well known vacationer destinations of Jaipur are in Pink City region and these are:
Hawa Mahal (must-see)
City Royal residence (must-see)
Jantar Mantar (must-see)
Every one of these 3 are in one immense complex and have various passage entryways, and are in Pink City part of Jaipur, which resembles focal Jaipur, and in this way, according to me one ought to begin their Jaipur city visit from here.
On the off chance that you can come here by 10 pm, then you can undoubtedly investigate this multitude of destinations till 3 pm, alongside a pleasant lunch, either in city royal residence or anyplace in Pink City market.
Tip: Look at LMB café and Tattoo Bistro and Parlor close to Hawa Mahal.
Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal is the famous vacationer website of Jaipur and its image is refreshed overall around the web when one quest for Jaipur.
Hawa Mahal, worked in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh for imperial family women, to see the roads from the windows of Hawa Mahal, because of the deep rooted "Parda pratha"
Today practically all voyagers visiting Jaipur needs to snatch an image or selfie with Hawa Mahal in foundation.
There are numerous housetop bistro's only inverse to Hawa Mahal which may not offer the best food but rather offer the best spot to snatch an astounding selfie
City Castle of Jaipur
The City Castle of Jaipur is by a long shot the one of the most outstanding traveler site in Jaipur. A little stroll of 400-500 meter will carry you from Hawa Mahal to City Castle, where you want to pay a section expenses between Rs 200 to Rs 3000.
In the Rs 200 section charges you will actually want to visit their exhibition halls, patio and in their Rs 3000 ticket, you will get a directed visit and selective admittance to the Chandra Mahal Castle, which is the 7 story constructing that has the first royal residence rooms of the Maharaja of Jaipur.
You might find the section charges of City Castle a piece costly as this entire complex is as yet a confidential property of the imperial group of Jaipur, and they have still kept up with the charm of this shocking royal residence. So its worth a visit.
A portion of the should visit places inside city royal residence are:
The section entryway "Rajendra Pol". The section entryway close to ticket counter.
Sarvato Bhadra, otherwise called "Diwan-e-Khas"
Mubarak Mahal, a one story castle that presently transformed into a gallery.
Chandra Mahal Castle, the 7 story working with 3 royal residences inside and the best spot in the entire city Royal residence complex.
Jantar Mantar, Jaipur
What's more, the third fascination triplet (Hawa Mahal, City Royal residence and this) is Jantar Mantar. Only 110 meter from City Royal residence passage door, you will find your self at the Jantar Mantar ticket counter.
Both Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are government property and this the section tickets here are very low. For Jantar Mantar its Rs 50 for Indian residents and Rs 200 for far off nationals.
At Jantar Mantar, you will track down a sum of 19 galactic instruments, worked by Sawai Jai Singh 2 of every 1734 and the primary fascination here is the world larhest sundial.
Jantar Mantar today is an UNESCO world legacy site and a visit through this spot is something like 60 minutes. So on the off chance that you have 2 entire days to investigate Jaipur, do visit this site.
Albert Museum
Worked in 1887 and named after Ruler Edword 7, Albert Lobby Gallery, is one of the best historical center in entire Jaipur for 2 reasons. first the actual structure is dazzling and is one of the most outstanding spot to get a few pictures with your adoration ones.
Furthermore, second, this spot has an enormous assortment of shocking curios like brilliant safeguards, ivory sculptures, weapons, old money and a genuine Egyption Mummy.
Birla Temple
Out of numerous Birla Sanctuaries in India, the one in Jaipur is exceptionally gorgeous and furthermore committed to Master Vishnu. The entire sanctuary complex is comprised of marble stones and you will likewise find numerous wonderful wall graved sculptures here.
The Birla sanctuary of Jaipur was opened in 1968, named after BM Birla and the sanctuary is arranged on a little slope (Moti Dungari slope) and simply over the slope you will likewise track down an abandoned post.
Opening time and Section charges of Birla Sanctuary Jaipur:
Section season of Birla Sanctuary: 6 am to 9 pm and sanctuary is shut from 1 pm to 3 pm
Section charges of Birla Sanctuary: free, similar to a sanctuary.
Area: Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, Tilak Nagar, Jaipur, 3 km straight drive from Albert LobbyIf you are looking to visit Jaipur, I recommend a great company that provides a great taxi service in Jodhpur. How to Choose the Best Travel Agency in India for Your Next Trip
How to Choose the Best Travel Agency in India for Your Next Trip
India is a land of diversity, culture, and adventure. Whether you want to explore the majestic Himalayas, the golden deserts of Rajasthan, the serene backwaters of Kerala, or the exotic islands of Andaman, you need a reliable and experienced travel agency to plan your trip.
But how do you find the best travel agency in NSP among the thousands of options available? Here are some tips to help you make the right choice.
Look for Reviews and Ratings
One of the easiest ways to find out about the quality and reputation of a travel agency is to check their reviews and ratings online. You can use platforms like Google, TripAdvisor, or Trustpilot to read what other travelers have to say about their experiences with different agencies.
You can also look for awards and certifications that indicate the agency’s credibility and expertise. For example, SOTC - one of the best travel agencies in India - has won several accolades such as the National Tourism Award, the World Travel Award, and the Travel + Leisure India’s Best Award.
Compare Prices and Services
Another important factor to consider when choosing a travel agency is the price and service they offer. You don’t want to pay more than you should or compromise on quality and safety.
To get the best deal, you should compare prices and services of different agencies for the same destination and itinerary. You can use online portals like Goibibo, Yatra, Book my Bhara - three of the best travel agencies in India - to compare and book flights, hotels, tours, and packages at competitive rates.
You should also check what is included and excluded in the package, such as meals, transfers, sightseeing, taxes, etc. You should also ask about any hidden charges or fees that may apply.
Check Their Expertise and Experience
Another crucial aspect to look for in a travel agency is their expertise and experience in the destination and type of travel you are interested in. You want an agency that has in-depth knowledge and local connections in the place you want to visit.
For example, if you want to go on a wildlife safari in South Africa, you should choose an agency that has specialized in African tours and has access to the best lodges, guides, and parks. Similarly, if you want to go on a spiritual journey in India, you should choose an agency that has curated packages for pilgrims and seekers.
One of the best travel agencies in India that offers customized and niche tours is Swan Tours. They have been in the industry for almost three decades and have a team of experts who can design your dream trip according to your preferences.
Ask for References and Testimonials
Finally, one of the best ways to find out if a travel agency is trustworthy and reliable is to ask for references and testimonials from their past clients. You can contact them directly or read their feedback on the agency’s website or social media pages.

Vanishes in the Mist
“Reba’s wedding, Anju. Will you…?” The voice drops off.
[1]        Only two people could call me Anju. One is Mitali, my wife, and the other… well, how does Koushik know this number? My brows knit into a frown.
We went our separate way long back when I left politics to pursue a career in the civil service.
“Capitalist roader,” Koushik spat on me when the admit card reached our sleepy North Bengal town. He had got no whiff of my preparing for the examination.
My muscled frame has since grown flabby, and the greying hairline receded into baldness as I settle comfortably in the corridors of power. The eyebags are of a recent origin; the CBI investigation has something to do with them.
“Oh sure, I’ll be…just let me check,”
          “I need you, Anju.”
Time often plays quirky. The ideals fade away, and the comrades develop feet of clay, leaving a sour taste. Yet, across the fogged-up memories of childhood and adolescence roll over the call – Koushik needs me.
So, on a misty winter afternoon, Mitali and I pack up for the weekend and quietly slip out. CBI must not get a whiff of my leaving Delhi, and the media should not get a tip.
Nobody answers when I try to inform Koushik about our arrival. Well, this little surprise will not displease him, I hope.
The sun has long gone down when we get out of the taxi after a four-hour-long drive from Bagdogra. The house stands haunted in the dark right at the corner where the highway turns abruptly towards an empty field with overgrown grass the townspeople love to call the airport, although no aircraft have landed there for decades.
Nothing remains of the once formidable gate beside the two rickety brick pillars with a marble plaque clinging to one of them. Despite being corroded over time, it still announces ‘Roy Chowdhury Villa’. The rest is hidden behind shrubs and creepers allowed to grow unrestrained. Had it not been winter, when snakes go into hibernation, I would not have dared to step into that thicket.
Wind rustles through the tree branches, gathering fallen leaves into a swirl. Bubai da, the old caretaker - his pale, wrinkled face shrivelled like a cadaver - springs out of nowhere. Mitali grips my hand.
“They’ve cut off the electric connection.” His voice travels through the hollow of a long empty tunnel as he picks up our luggage and shows us our room – the only one with a kerosene lamp flickering - at the end of the long corridor.
The door screeches open, unsettling the dust and letting out the musty smell of stale, dank air of a long uninhabited place. The walls – paint peeled off – have turned mouldy. The faded bedspread lies damp and cold like a corpse. No one has turned it for ages.
“Nobody has entered this room after Kartama (the old mistress) died,” Bubai da explains.
It saddens me. Koushik has not told me Sonali is no more.
“Karta (the head of the household) isn’t doing well. He’ll meet you in the morning.” Bubai da is busy preparing the bed while he speaks. “Freshen up. Meanwhile, I’ll rustle up dinner for you.”
He melts in the darkness before I can ask him about Reba.
“No need to unpack much,” Mitali’s voice betrays irritation, “seems we’re in a ruin.”
I cannot blame her. This is not the reception we expected. Instead of a family preparing for a wedding, we seem to have landed in a spooky house.
“Reba Didimoni teaches in a school in Mathabhanga. She comes home at weekends. You will meet her tomorrow morning,” Bubai da explains at the dinner table.
“Karta had a small catering business. I used to oversee until it shut shop during the pandemic,” Bubai da continues. “Although things had never been hunky-dory, the pandemic reduced us to penury. Karta suffered a cardiac arrest last summer and has since been obsessed about Reba Didimoni’s wedding.”
The only way out is to sell the property, but Koushik will not hear any such thing.
“You do whatever you please with the Villa, but only after my dead body leaves its gate.” Koushik will retort whenever his siblings – now spread worldwide – raise the issue.
I chuckle to myself. The revolutionary is now clutching at a piece of land. I tap the mahogany dinner table.  Across it, Koushik and I spent so many evenings arguing about the future of humanity.
“Why don’t you take some of the burdens?” Bubai da turns to me. “You’re a rich man now.”
“You won’t understand, Bubai.” Mitali tries to shake it off, “We have our share of trouble. Days are not so rosy for us either, you know.”
“And Bubai da,” I chip in, “what solution is there, anyway? Surely, you don’t think we will wade in the Roy Chowdhury’s muddle?”
“But you can take Reba’s responsibility.”
I know why Bubai da is so insistent. He has no immediate family, and his entire life has revolved around this house. Where will he go if the property is sold out?
“God has his own plans,” Bubai da almost read my mind. “Tomorrow morning, you will find everything settled. You won’t have to trouble yourself about me either.” His lips pucker into a mysterious smile.
Late at night, I give up on getting some sleep. Throwing a shawl over my shoulders, I slip out of the room.
A draft from the Himalayas shudders through the corridor. It breathes on my neck, tingling my skin to a late October night in my childhood. We were returning home after pandal-hopping all through the Durga Puja evening. I tugged at Bubai da for an ice cream stick.
He tried to pacify me, but I would not. “One day, when I grow up – big as you, I’ll buy all the ice cream in the world and won’t give you any, however much you cry.”
Bubai da lifted me to his chest and kissed my neck. “If you don’t give me one, I’ll be after you forever. Even after death.”
I fondly rub my neck. If only I could return to that innocence and start all over again.
A fresh cool breeze kisses me as I open the window in the morning,
Mitali sprawls languorously in the bed. “Bubai should have asked us for tea by now.”
But we find no one in the house. Koushik, Bubai da, everyone seems to have vanished in thin air.
We step out onto the highway. Kanchenjunga is sparkling over the northern sky. Mitali screams in joy. And it infects me also. We forget everything about the night before and worry about the missing people.
“Anjan Kaku, you are… here?” A young woman stops on her way, throws her backpack to the ground, and tips to touch my feet.
“I’m Reba. Can’t you remember me?”
“Reba!” that girl in a frock running about in the yard has grown into a beautiful lady. Life has played rough on her, but in the soft golden winter sun this morning, her smiling face has no trace of that struggle.
“Did you spend the night there, in our house, and Bubai da received you?”   Reba’s face wears an expression of incredulity if not outright fear.
“What’s so odd about it?” asks Mitali.
“Only that both Papa and Bubai died of Covid last summer, during the 2nd wave.”
Reba wraps her arm around Mitali’s waist, saving her from collapsing to the ground.
“What about your wedding?” I try to recover from the shock.
“Wedding? My wedding?” Reba’s forehead creases questioningly before she breaks into a hearty laughter.
“But who phoned me then?” I turn to the northern sky. Kanchenjunga has vanished behind a thick blanket of mist.

Agra, India plus learning customs before travel, travel tips and mishaps
In this episode, FAQ is: How can I learn about a country’s customs before I visit there?
  Today’s Destination is: Agra, India
Today’s Misstep- I took the wrong bus to the airport in Reykjavik.
Travel Advice: Petroleum Jelly has many uses for travelers, so save space and money, simply.
FAQ: How can I learn about a country’s customs before I visit there? I will give you five answers to that question, and for some European countries, this will be easier; when it comes to Step 4 and Step 5 experiences, you will work harder on the research to get the answers you need.
  1. The First place to look is to do some Online Research: Utilize the internet to find reliable sources, travel forums, and blogs that discuss the customs and traditions of the country you plan to visit.
2. Next, check out your local library or bookstore for books. Guidebooks: Invest in travel guidebooks that provide cultural insights and practical tips for navigating customs in specific countries.
3. An excellent next step is language. Language Apps: Use language-learning apps to familiarize yourself with basic phrases and etiquette, as language is often intertwined with cultural norms. You need to know some cultural experiences if possible.
4. Cultural Workshops: Attend local cultural workshops or events in your area to gain firsthand knowledge about the customs and traditions of the country you intend to visit.
5. Lastly, ask friends to connect you with locals or do it yourself.
Engage with locals through social media platforms or language exchange websites to ask questions and gain insights directly from people living in the destination.
Today’s destination: Agra, India
Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna River in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, about 142 miles southeast of the national capital, Delhi. It’s about the distance from San Diego to Los Angeles.1.7 million people live in Agra.
You will find One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal. It is an iconic white marble magical mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved and favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture and a symbol of eternal love, built in the 17th century.
The second place to see is the Agra Fort: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a massive red sandstone fort located on the banks of the Yamuna River. It served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors and houses several impressive structures, including the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal.
Other places to visit include Kinari Bazaar, a bustling market, and Mehtab Bagh, a garden complex on the opposite side of the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal. From this garden viewpoint, you can enjoy some peace, walk around the monument, and see the Taj Mahal at different times of the day. There are other ancient cities and tombs to explore here, which I hope to visit someday.
One of my first impressions was that it was stark white marble with Brass and Gold trimmings.
How large is the building? 242 feet tall and the exact size below ground.
It was lined up with other buildings, with a Guest house next door on the river.
East Gate was how I entered.
Wear shoe covers to see the mosque.
