Chalayan has put up resistance against the image-oriented approach of the fashion industry through his conceptual attitude by deconstructing the meaning of the clothes to re-semantify them and change their ontology. By the end of the 1980s Hussein Chalayan had taken over the critical position of Martin Margiela, the pioneer of deconstructivism in fashion, through his controversial discourse and designs against consumer culture. However, the movement of deconstructivism has marked a critical era in contemporary fashion. Spirit of 69: dB Customs’ Suzuki XR69 race replica

The Suzuki XR69 holds a special place in classic superbike lore. That puts it well inside the wheelhouse of Canadian builder Darren Begg, who specializes in fast bikes from the late 70s and 80s. He’s just finished piecing together this stunning XR69 replica—with a slightly period incorrect spec sheet.

“It’s not a traditional GS1000-engined XR69,” he admits, “but I’m not much of a traditionalist. So it’s my interpretation of this historic racer.”

Darren operates as dB Customs out of Ottawa, Canada. He’s also a dealer for a few top-shelf parts manufacturers, so he’s a master of piecing together the best of the best on his projects. His idea here was to build a series of ten street-able XR9 replicas using his favorite components—plus a very special chassis.

This one’s the first in the series, as the number on the side of the fairing suggests.

The XR69 was originally developed by Pops Yoshimura and Suzuki, and cleaned up when it hit the racetrack in 1980. It was powered by an eight-valve motor derived from the GS1000—but Darren’s replica borrows its motor from elsewhere in Suzuki’s back catalog.

Powering this retro-fabulous superbike is the motor from a 1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200. Darren refreshed the motor and topped it off with an early GSX-R750 head: “It has more of a down draft design, with smaller combustion chambers for added compression,” he explains.

Inside are the cams from an oil-cooled GSX-R1100 and Kibblewhite springs, with spark coming from a Dyna 2000 ignition. The engine breathes through a set of gorgeous Yoshimura TMR-MJN carbs with K&N filters, and exhales through a lightweight four-into-one titanium exhaust system from Racefit.

The chassis offers closer ties to the XR69: “CMR Racing in Trenton, Ontario was building XR69 chassis for Team USA and others who competed at the Island Classic at Phillip Island in Australia,” Darren tells us. “The chassis were highly competitive and setting lap records in their class, mere seconds off the pace of modern superbikes.”

CM Racing’s Byron Cox and Denis Curtis, who sadly passed away late last year, fabricated a pair of 4130 aircraft grade tubular chromoly steel frames, for the first two commissioned builds. And they supplied the swingarms and fuel tanks too.

Darren completed the chassis with Öhlins suspension at both ends, including a set of forks originally designed for a BMW S1000RR, with 10 mm additional length and stroke. The wheels are ultra light carbon fiber items from Dymag, wrapped in 17” Michelin Pilot Power CT2 tires. The brakes are Brembo calipers with twin 320 mm discs up front, plumbed with Spiegler lines.

For the bodywork, Darren designed a fairing and tail in the style of the XR69, then had the parts shaped out of carbon fiber. The fairing uses a pair of headlights from a Honda VFR400 NC35. Just behind it is a Koso dash, with clip-ons, race-style switches, Brembo controls and a Yoshimura throttle.

There’s a slim racing seat pad up top, with Harris Performance rear-sets lower down.

Darren’s designed a few livery options that potential clients can pick from, with inspiration from various classic Suzuki race bikes. The options even include a red and black tribute to the original XR69 paint scheme—but so far, everyone’s interest has fallen on this blue design. “It’s hard to deny that some inspiration didn’t come from Team Classic Suzuki’s rendition as well,” he admits.

Regular collaborator Sketch’s Ink laid down the livery. It’s all paint too, with not a single vinyl graphic in sight.

Darren’s first XR69 replica series build is flawless, and looks like it’d be nuts to ride too. This one’s off to New Zealand, and the second one, which is currently being assembled and “will be a killer 1,216 cc monster,” is destined for California.

A Custom BMW R80ST by La Motocicletta

The BMW R80ST is one of the rarer and more unusual motorcycles from the German marque’s 1980s catalogue. It’s essentially a more street-oriented version of the legendary BMW R80G/S, the motorcycle that largely invented the modern dual sport adventure motorcycle genre.

Only a few thousand examples of the BMW R80ST were built between 1982 and 1984 with only 1,000 or so making it to the USA. It wasn’t a successful model for BMW, particularly when compared with the runaway success of the R80G/S, but the R80ST has found a loyal following of riders who love it for its toughness, its reliability, and its good road handling.

The BMW R80ST uses the same basic engine as the R80G/S, a 798cc air-cooled, horizontally-opposed twin with two push rod actuated overhead valves per cylinder. The engine and 5-speed transmission are of unit construction, and the bike uses an enclosed shaft drive to the rear wheel.

The slightly longer travel suspension used on the R80G/S was replaced with shorter, more road-suitable suspension on the R80ST, and the 21 inch front wheel of the R80G/S was replaced with a 19 inch unit on the R80ST. Braking is accomplished with a drum at the rear and a single disc up front, and the R80ST featured a different seat and a different, slightly larger fuel tank than its sibling.

Despite its relatively low production numbers we’ve seen a few custom BMW R80STs over the years. Custom motorcycle builders love them for the same reasons their owners love them, and the model is now in demand by enthusiasts around the world.

The Custom BMW R80ST by La Motocicletta

This BMW R80ST has been comprehensively rebuilt by the team at La Motocicletta, in fact its engine was completely disassembled and reassembled with R100 components – increasing both the capacity and power output with almost no externally visible changes.

La Motocicletta is run by Massimo Zancai, a specialist motorcycle engineer who is frequently contracted by major manufacturers including Aprilia and Moto Guzzi to fabricate complex parts for custom concept motorcycles. He’s responsible for many of the parts on the Aprilia RS-660 and the Moto Guzzi MGX-21, concept motorcycles from 2019 and 2017 respectively.

With La Motocicletta, Massimo enjoys the chance to built motorcycles as he wants them to be, he’s not dealing with clients or anyone else for these builds so he can specify everything from start to finish.

This custom required a complete strip down, the engine was rebuilt as mentioned above and the front and rear suspension were not completely replaced. A new adjustable monoshock was fitted to the rear using custom mounts to modify the geometry and an entirely new front end was fitted with adjustable upside down forks, twin four pot Tokio radial disc brakes with aftermarket rotors.

The original front fender was replaced with a newly fabricated unit, and the entire rear subframe was removed and replaced with a much smaller seat support for the single saddle. The engine now breathes through two Bing carburettors with pod air filters, and it has higher performance headers into higher flow mufflers.

The complexity of fitting the fuel tank was exacerbated by the fact that Massimo didn’t want any externally visible mounting brackets. The speedometer is integrated into the top of the fuel tank, and all of the electrical wiring is hidden underneath. The paint on the fuel tank was particularly time consuming, requiring 12 layers of clear coat with polishing between each layer to give the tank its glistening appearance.

Sierra BMW & Beta is proud to introduce the 2020 RR and RR-S models. These models are all new and represents a new generation for the RR and RR-S range. Counter-balanced 250 and 300! ALL-NEW 4 stroke engines, twin injection on the RR-S, ALL NEW chassis!

The 2020 range includes 8 different engine sizes: four 2-stroke (RR 125/200/250/300 cc) and four 4-stroke (RR-S 350/390/430/500 cc) engines that offer Beta customers an extremely wide selection of bikes to take on their next adventure.

Beta owns the phrase Rideability and the 2020 models continue this off-road experience with a slim, lightweight bike that is safe, reliable, and easy to ride while creating a riding experience like no other manufacturer can provide.

Major advances have been made by the Beta team of engineers these past twelve months including introducing a completely new engine design to the 4-stroke range, added smoothness to the 2-stroke engine, and an all new frame that boasts completely redesigned geometry and rigidity. The popular 200 RR Model returns as well for 2020.

Besides the all-new engines and frames, the sub-frame, tail section, seat, fuel tank, bodywork, and many other details are also all new coming together to provide the best looking and most friendly cockpit layout on the market.

Also new for 2020 is the ability for customers to order any RR or RR-S model straight from the factory with a 2" lower seat height over the stock models. These "lowboy" models have parts installed inside the front fork and rear shock to lower the seat height.

Beta USA's popular BYOB (Build Your Own Beta) program will continue for 2020. This program allows riders to custom build his or her new Beta to fit their special needs by allowing the addition of more than 400 accessories to their bike.

New features include:

Engine

4-stroke RR-S (350/390/430/500 cc):

-A complete redesign, with the aim of reducing the weight and bulk of moving parts, achieved by raising the clutch and moving the crankshaft back. Moving the center of gravity closer to the swingarm pivot makes for significantly better handling. An overall weight reduction of 2.2 lbs.

-A redesigned magnesium clutch cover, redeveloped to improve the oil flow into the clutch assembly more efficiently.

-Magnesium flywheel cover, redesignedin-line with the rest of the engine, now with a more functional and modern look.

-New water pump system that improves flow-rate and therefore the efficiency of the cooling system's ability to transfer heat, keeping average temperatures lower, improving performance, and providing a more simplified cooling hose system.

-Cylinder and head redesigned matched with the updated cooling system to lower engine temperatures.

-Twin Injectors improve performance and increase fuel mileage.

-Oil circuit redesigned to provide better heat transfer between oil and water in the front section of the crankcase in order to keep the oil temperature lower.

-Clutch with redesigned discs in a new material to ensure smoother and more modular gear shifting.

-Redesigned gearing, now shorter and lighter.

-New gearshift mechanism with lighter cam to improve shifting.

-Gearshift lever redesigned in line with the new engine and frame layout.

-Addition of a neutral sensor.

-Updated EFI mapping.

2-stroke (250/300 cc):

-Now with a counter-balancer to reduce vibration by increasing inertia and improving the power delivery curve. The counter-balancer improves the power delivery throughout the rpm range.

-Cylinder head redesigned (250 cc only) to improve torque at low rpm.

2-stroke (125 cc):

-New cylinder with modified exhaust port and diameters.

-New exhaust flange.

-New exhaust valve system and new boosters.

-New clutch cover with airpurging system operated by the modified clutch mechanism; modified oil inlet cap position to improve oil change time.

-New exhaust valve drive, opens at a different rate to improve power delivery.

-New expansion chamber provides broader power delivery.

These modifications to the 125 RR (derived straight from the 2019 Racing model) provide added torque at low rpm while greater power at the high revs, for increased performance across the entire power curve while at the same time, provides a bike that is easier to ride.

Chassis: (All RR and RR-S Models)

-All-New frame with redesigned geometry and rigidity for increased agility and stability. Weight is reduced and reliability boosted with the use of precision-cast components, while comfort is improved and vibration reduced thanks to new head bolts. The frame is also narrower at the base which improves handling over difficult sections and typical off-road tracks.

-Modified swingarm, now longer for the 4-stroke range and the 200 cc 2-stroke model, for better stability and traction.

-Completely redesigned tailpiece, greater strength to reduce breakage during off road riding, all filter box components and related accessories are now housed inside it (electrical components and oil reservoir for 2-strokes).

-New air filter boot.

-Air Filter mounting system, providing quicker and more accurate installation.

-Improved fork design compared to previous version, with new inner cartridge to lower the center of gravity providing the perfect level of plushness while also improving the action of square-edge impacts. Internal valving has been updated to work in-line with the new frame design.

-New rear shock absorber with:

-New top-out system, now a spring to improve grip and contact with the ground during hard braking.

-New longer shock bumper with more progressive compression. This ensures good protection of the buffer and improves bottoming resistance.

-New valving, to work in-line with the new frame.

-Cooling system with water hoses placed inside the frame and more efficient radiators. This improves heat transfer and allows engines to operate at lower temperatures even in the most extreme conditions.

-Larger capacity fuel tanks, of 2.4 US gallons for 4-strokes and 2.55 US gallons for 2-strokes. Besides providing greater range, the new fuel tanks improve ergonomics and ease-of-movement in the seat.

-Wider handlebars for greater control.

-Exhaust with new layout in line with the bike's new rear section.

-Side stand with bigger foot pad.

-New precision-cast footpegs that are better at shedding mud and teeth to increase boot grip.

-New chain guide, longer to suit new swingarm.

-New brake pedal, more robust and with larger bearings.

-Shorter 430/480 cc gearing compared to previous models.

Design

-Completely new superstructure (front cowl, front and rear fenders, ducts and fairings) that improves ergonomics and the operation of all related parts retaining the Italian design Beta is known for.

-Front fender with variable thickness geometry which reduces weight and increases rigidity.

French Bob: A dose of vintage flair for the Triumph Bobber

The success of the Triumph Bobber has not gone unnoticed by the more savvy custom shops. It’s the fastest-selling motorcycle in the history of the British brand, but unfortunately it’s tricky to customize—because Triumph largely ‘got it right’ at the design stage.

The French outfit BAAK has just finished this 2020-spec Bonneville Bobber 1200, and it looks superb. But there’s a bigger story than just the bike. The Lyon-based workshop will open new premises in the USA next year, and this Bobber is also a platform for their rapidly expanding parts catalog.

BAAK’s Triumph cleverly takes aspects of the factory design and amps them up further, adding a vintage vibe along the way.

Their goal was to make the Triumph Bobber feel ‘more authentic,’ while adding a little of their own DNA. “Triumph did a good job,” says shop boss Julien Demauge-Bost. “The chassis and engine are great. We simply had to find the right balance to make it more ‘punchy’ and different from the one you can find at your dealership.”

The build was an in-house project, with no client brief, and became a test bed for a new a range of BAAK parts. “But then a customer saw the motorcycle while it was still being built, and fell in love with the style,” says Julien. “He decided to purchase it. It was delivered to him last Saturday.”

BAAK are onto a good thing here, because a second customer also fell in love with the project. He’s ordered a similar build, which will be ready in a few weeks.

Unlike most donor bikes, tweaking a Bobber doesn’t require cutting and welding on a new rear frame—because there isn’t one. This immediately removes a major headache and allows concentration to be focused elsewhere—and in this case, that meant the front end.

BAAK selected an aftermarket springer fork—more commonly fitted to Harleys—and designed and machined a triple trees kit to make it it. They’ve also machined up a new steering column and front wheel axle, plus sundry brake parts that allowed them to keep most of the Bobber brake system.

“That was one of the biggest parts of the job,” says Julien. “And it was very tricky too: we kept the original brake caliper, and redesigned all the parts around it to make things work safely.”

The rear shock has been upgraded to a custom unit, co-designed and manufactured by Shock Factory in France. “Shock Factory is a French brand founded by a former EMC Shocks employee,” says Julien. “We’ve been working with them for years, we believe their products have the best price/quality ratio on the market. A great look, and super-easy to adjust.”

A big visual jolt comes from the disc wheels—or ‘Moon’ wheels, as Julien calls them. BAAK commissioned them from an American manufacturer, in F19/R16 sizes. They’re fitted with Avon Safety Mileage MKII tires.

Triumph’s 1200 cc parallel twin is renowned for its grunt, and is tuned exceptionally well. So BAAK have left the mechanicals alone, replaced the airbox system with free-flowing filters, and installed new stainless steel headers and aluminum mufflers. “The customer can decide whether he keeps the original catalytic converter, or goes for an ‘X-pipe’ and removes the cat.”

No injection mapping was required and the renowned grunt of the Bobber engine remains intact. “The injection auto-adjusts,” says Julien. “The setup is even compatible with the X-pipe system.”

Power now hits the back wheel via a low-maintenance belt drive system developed by the Italian company Free Spirits. Installation is relatively simple, aside from having to reposition a bracket.

The wiring was a lot trickier, though—because removing the bulky stock airbox also revealed a lot of the stock loom. So BAAK built a leather cover to hide everything away neatly.

There’s a new speedo (set into a Bates headlight) and switchgear, which required some creative thinking. “We co-designed a plug-n-play electronic box and wiring harness with one of our manufacturing partners,” says Julien.”We can now offer a plug-n-play speedometer solution for all the latest Triumph models.”

“The electronics are really tricky on this motorcycle: it took us months to achieve a functional solution.”

The 1” pullback bars (and custom clamps) are from the BAAK catalog, and are finished with custom aluminum controls and Biltwell grips. “We also deleted the electronic throttle, relocated the system underneath the gas tank, and developed a cable system,” says Julien.

“So we can keep the ‘Ride-By-Wire’ electronic throttle functional, while running a cable throttle inside the handlebars for a cleaner look. These are the kind of details we enjoy spending time on—it really makes a difference.”

Other slick details include compact LED blinkers, a tire-hugging custom rear fender, a luxurious new leather cover for the seat, and a discreet under-bar rear view mirror. Even the license plate holder is neatly integrated into the build.

It’s a supremely well-sorted build, and BAAK’s customer is very satisfied. “Despite the fork and wheels, it remains easy to ride—very stable and agile,” says Julien. “Our customer took it for a test-ride it last Sunday, mostly in the rain, and described it as a very ‘secure’ machine.”

The good news is that a kit is on the way, so Bobber owners will be able to replicate this style. And BAAK will soon be accepting pre-orders from American customers who want a fully built up bike when the store opens next year.

Vintage Harrison Light Correction Meter

A very nice, 1940s, Vintage Harrison Light Correction Meter in very good condition and in it’s original leather pouch!

Made by Harrison Optical Engineers, Hollywood, California, USA and designed by the founder, William.H. Harrison.

These wonderful light meters were sold with and without filters, and were used for light colour correction for both standard and movie cameras. There is a full set, with meter and filters, in the Kodak Collection at the National Science and Media Museum, Bradford, UK.

One side of the meter gives you the colour temperature and the other side has a series of holes filled with filters which act as the light correction meter.

Hold your thumb and forefinger on either side of the centre of the meter

Turn the outer wheels with the fingers of the other hand, whilst viewing the scene through the filter, until you find a filter which looks best for your scene.

You then read off the colour temperature and the required colour correction disc on the other side.
