Why do Dante, Vergil, and Nero all have white hair? (Light spoilers for DMC5)

It’s actually a simple answer on the surface. Despite white hair being recessive if it were an actual hair color option, they all have demon blood, and demon blood is probably strong enough to cancel out any other hair color in their genes.

However, it doesn’t end there. In dmc5, Vergil splits into V and Urizen. Urizen is his demon half, all big and scary, and V is his human half. It is then noticed that V has black hair instead of white as his natural color, his hair only turning white when he uses his demon powers.

This is interesting to me, mainly because their human mother, Eva, had blonde hair. However, just because she had blonde hair in flashbacks and pictures doesn’t make it impossible for V to end up with black hair, there are a few explanations.

Theory 1: Black is his natural hair color, and Eva was just dying her hair to make it look blonde. It’s a common occurrence in real life, many people dye their hair to be many different colors. Eva dying her hair to be blonde because she wanted to would make sense if then her hair was originally black, and her genes gave Vergil black hair in his human half.

Theory 2: Vergil dyed his hair. It sounds a little silly, and we do see in V’s “birth” scene that he comes out with black (or at least very dark) hair. But since V is simply Vergil’s human half, and not what Vergil would actually look like if he were a human, it’s possible that he subconsciously wants black hair.

Theory 3: It was simply a character design choice and I’m reading too far into this. Boring, but honestly probably the “correct” answer.

Theory 4: The dumbest (and my favorite), V dyed his hair. After he was “born,” he found the city Dante was working out of, pit stopped in a barber shop, and asked to have his hair dyed “as dark as his soul.” It’s edgy, it’s silly, but it is in character. I want to see that play out too, and the scene where Dante asks why he dyed his hair because Dante knows perfectly well that their mother was a blonde.

FORIVA is definitely not without its flaws - which we are aware of and plan to take another pass at ironing out in the future - but of all of our publicly available adventure modules it’s the one I’m most proud of and feel best represents what a Eureka module should be. We aren’t quite there yet to the ideal Eureka module, but we kind of have to finish the actual Eureka rulebook before we can worry about that any more.

Pioneering new ground in the artform of TTRPGs is hard.
