Three centuries after the end of the Great War, Megatron’s reformatting as Galvatron, and the return of the AllSpark to Cybertron, descendants of the Autobots — called the Maximals — and of the Decepticons — called the Predacons — were the first chasses to be forged for the creations of the newly-returned AllSpark.
Given that the Great War was won by the Autobots, their descendants ( the Maximals ) enjoy the privileges of a society whose rules were designed in their favor; for instance, the ready availability of jobs that required less physical exertion; and a multitude of government offices yielded easily to the mention of ones’ wartime faction, so long as you were on the ‘right side’. Whereas the Predacons are mistrusted as a baseline, forced to do the bidding of the governing body of Cybertron — the Maximal Elders. In some ways, this second-class citizenship was eerily similar to the biases which had prompted the Great War, where lower caste mecha were deemed ‘ lesser ’ and treated as disposable.
Of the newsparks who came online during this time, there was one with similar extremist views as the legendary Decepticon leader of the Great War, Megatron. This young bot, Mastodon, viewed the actions of the Predacon Alliance as submissive and slow-acting, for daring to acquiesce to the bidding of the Maximal Elders even though they were moving forward with their own plans to wrest back control from the Maximals behind the scenes. Word of his views spreads quickly through their ranks, and Mastodon shortly finds himself in the tutelage of the then leader of the Predacons [ name tbd* ] where he was taught the fundamentals of their movement, and of their origins. 
It was here that Mastodon first learned the name ‘Megatron,’ and of his principles which were the foundation of their movement, and here where he first began to idolize him as the purest distillation of his beliefs. [ the Predacon Leader ] , seeing potential in his young ward, shortly told him about the Golden Disc, which was an Earthly Artifact that the humans shot into space in the late 70’s containing evidence of human intelligence in an attempt to communicate with other sentient, space-faring beings that found it. There were rumors that Megatron himself had retrieved this disc from its trajectory, and engraved it with a secret message to the Future Decepticons should they ever lose the war. But the details therein were vague, as he’d kept the contents of the contingency plan very close to Spark lest any Autobots should learn of it and attempt to intercede.
The Golden Disc was a heavily-guarded artifact, for this reason. It wasn’t until it was stolen by Mastodon’s newly-assembled group of like-minded Predacons that they learned the exact steps of said contingency plan. Megatron predicted that the ships of the future might have the means to travel back in time via the usage of transwarp technology. And he suggested that if the war were ever lost, one could travel back in time and kill Optimus Prime aboard the wreckage of the Ark before the War could even begin.
Upon discovering the top-secret contents of the disc, Mastodon takes this as a sign for his life’s true purpose. He rechristens himself after his hero, Megatron, and travels back in time. He is chased through spacetime by a nearby Maximal craft, the Axalon commanded by Optimus Primal, and pursued to the far distant past. To Earth, in the precarious time between human civilization taking root on the wild planet and the Awakening of the Autobot and Decepticon forces.
There, the young dissident plots to uncover the location of the crashed Ark and kill Optimus Prime before he can awaken in the future and lead the Autobots to victory, while at the same time avoiding detection from the Predacon Alliance, who themselves pursue him for acting in haste against their directive…

Ezra Feinberg builds intricate architectures from the softest, most organic sounds, achieving a pointillist, Reichian complexity out of guitar, synth, voice and piano notes that melt in the atmosphere. It’s a puzzle box made of clouds, light as air, with the sun shining through. The one-time Citay impresario assembles experimental musicians from all over to infuse his compositions with life. John Thayer of Sunwatchers and Arp is, perhaps, his closest, most regular collaborator, but he also brings in Jeffrey Cantu-Lesdesma, David Moore and Mary Lattimore to play various parts in these luminous cuts.
“Pose Beams,” for example, augments its lattice-like sound with the gentle piping of moduler synthesizer — that’s Cantu-Ledesma. Its flute-y sounds intersect gently, but at right angles, with piano and guitar. The piece interleaves motifs in a round-like overlayering, a bell-like tone picking out the top line of melody. A bit of drumming comes in later, as the sounds sprawl in all directions, no longer so orderly but infused with improvisatory enterprise.
The New York City improviser David Lackney turns up in two separate songs. “Future Sound,” which opens the disc, establishes a serene, pastoral atmosphere, as silky flute rests lightly on undulations of picked guitar. Lackney plays piano later in “The Big Clock,” a tune that starts in clean, pulsing electronics, then kicks them up a notch with effected vocals, just dots of denatured sound, making patterns in a matrix. Mid-cut a buoyant, emphatic beat swaggers in, very Stereolab-ish in its fizzy, euphoric propulsion.  These cuts lilt upwards optimistically, not a shiver of doubt or downcast-ness in their bright melodies.
The harp, as played by Mary Lattimore in “Get Some Rest,” seems like a natural addition to these abstracted compositions, its pizzicato tones precise as a machine but also human as breathing. The track circles tightly around short, repeated motifs, and yet seems to find an expansiveness in this reiteration, a hall of mirrors quality in which basic ideas are reflected and refracted to the point they suggest infinity.  
The cover to Soft Power shows a bit of greenery hemmed in by concrete, and indeed, sprouts of organic life flourish here in the space they’re given. Instrumental sounds proliferate amid a tightly structured discipline, sounding lush and abstracted at once.
