No More Colombian Nights - XIX
Dipper sat quietly in his bed, shining his flashlight on his book, trying to catch up on his high fantasy novel but finding it difficult to focus on. The day had been more than annoying, grating his nerves for a majority of it as his overly excited sister and overly loyal Soos got too involved in Stan’s schemes again. He had spent so much time running around with Soos and Mable he’d had no time to himself at all. They had started the day going to the grocery store, which they had been banned from at least twelve times consecutively the summer before due to his Grunkle Stan’s strong belief in the five-finger discount. He wasn’t even sure Stan was technically allowed in with them anymore, but he still disguised himself to get in regularly.
This time had really been no different, minus his Grunkle. Mable got in trouble for ‘sampling’ all the different types of dark chocolate, spitting out more than half of them for being too ‘evil for consumption’ due to the lack of sweetness. Soos annoyed the clerk by having too many questions about the difference between angel hair and spaghetti noodles and then managed to bump into the wine display, knocking over multiple bottles and sending champagne corks flying, shattering a window and a few of the overhead lights. That had gotten them the first ban of the summer. He loved his Grunkle, but he had very little interest in his love life, finding himself shuddering at how Honey and Stan had stared at each other earlier. It was too intimate and didn’t fascinate him like it seemed to Mable.
Dipper had liked the way she complimented his voice, though. His mom had always told him he had a nice voice, although hearing it from your mom felt different. Honey’s words had made him feel fuzzy, and he had to remind himself of his Great Uncle Ford’s words. She was probably dangerous, a master manipulator that was trained and designed to take men down. He even speculated that was why her name was what she had chosen it to be—a code name for a honeypot mission. Great Uncle Ford had run the background checks; she had basically no paper trail to be found, no aliases, no birth record, or social security. It was like she didn’t exist before this. A sure sign of something covert.
Dipper had decided this summer he would be diligent in his apprenticeship to his great uncle, hoping this would take his mind off of things. Up until the last couple of days he had pushed himself to the limits, working as late as his body could handle, taking notes, and studying until his brain was filled with nothing else. Well, almost nothing else. He did find himself thinking about Pacifica more than he found he was comfortable with, contemplating what Mable had said about asking her to play video games at some point. He also found himself looking up pictures of her. Maybe liking blondes ran in the family. She did have really nice hair.
He shook the thought from his head, groaning softly as Mable snored heavily on the other side of the room. Maybe he should ask his sister to set something up again like she did tonight. It had seemed to work to some degree, if being kicked out so early was any indication, although he wouldn’t ponder further what that meant exactly. Gross. Great Uncle Ford had seemed secretive this morning too, trying to sneak off without him noticing. When Dipper caught him sneaking out of the house, he gave some odd excuse about needing him to stay home to keep an eye on things. He wasn’t even home by the time they got back with Soos, which struck him as concerning.
Dipper had since gone down to the lab to see if there was any indication of where he had gone. The frequency gun was gone, as were a few random other tools. He had been a little angsty since then. Had he not been proving his worth? He would need to work harder. Now he was sitting up late again so he could study all of the old notes they had, trying to pin point what he had been missing from his scope of knowledge that made Ford leave him with his sister and Stan. His mind just couldn’t seem to stay there tonight.
Summerween was also in the next few days, and Mable and him had been secretly trying to plan a party since he felt a little too old to trick or treat this year as an official teenager. Mable had been a bit bummed until he explained how a Summerween party was like the ultimate trick or treating. Maybe he could ask Pacifica to be his date for that. Was he really thinking about asking her out? He groaned softly, his eyes dry and heavy with the night creeping by. His book started fall from his hand as consciousness slipped, his chest rising and falling steadily as sleep clawed him down.
Dipper jumped hard, the sound of a car door and some yelling releasing the grip of sleep from his mind as he sluggishly made his way to the triangle-shaped window that occupied the room. Great Uncle Ford was outside, dragging what looked to be his unconscious Grunkle Stan out of the car. He was calling for Soos, who quickly came outside and gathered under Stan’s other arm so they could co-carry him inside. Dipper gasped, scrambling to Mable’s bedside, sure Ford had been right and Honey had attempted to take him in, and it ended poorly. Mable made weird noises as he shook her gently to wake her.
“Hey, something happened. Get up.” She snuffled and groaned as she woke up, slowly blinking at her brother.
“What? You’ve been reading too much mystery stuff. Go back to bed, Dipper.” She turned over, her blanket wrapping her tightly. He groaned, grabbing the edge of the blanket and pulling until she slid onto the floor with a grunt.
“Mable, I mean it. I think Stan got hurt.” That got her attention, eyes wide as she jumped up off the floor.
“What?! How?” The sound of the car trunk drew their attention away from their conversation, their eyes meeting the sight of their conscious uncle dragging a covered…something. It was suspiciously body-shaped and seemed heavy for him to be dragging. Mable shuddered, looking at Dipper with deep concern. Mable crept to the door, avoiding the squeaky floorboards as she opened the door a crack to listen. There was a lot of noise coming from downstairs. Stumbling, groaning, and something falling over, giving the picture Soos must be struggling with Stan’s weight as he attempted to get him inside.
“Grunkle Stan?” Mable whimpered, sneaking to the edge of the bannister at the stairs. There was no good view from where they were. They would need to wait until Soos left to go down and see what was going on.
“Oof Mister Pines, you’re looking rougher than I’ve ever seen you look. Wait here, dude. I’m gonna get you some ice.” Soos went into the kitchen, rummaging around in the freezer for an ice pack of some sort. Mable took her opportunity, quickly and quietly making her way down the stairs a little so she could see the state of their uncle. They could hear him groaning and grumbling, but not in a way that made sense.
“Grunkle Stan?” She whispered again, her eyes brimmed with tears as she moved the rest of the way down, rounding the corner and approaching Stan’s chair. He had a lump on the side of his head and was clearly dazed, mumbling about agents. Blood splattered his nice evening clothes, and a suspiciously dark line was developing on his neck. Dipper knew exactly what had happened.
“Mable I told you this was a bad idea. She tried to kill Grunkle Stan.” Mable shook her head in wide-eyed disbelief.
“No. You’re wrong, Dipper! I got to know her. Shes so nice. And when I brought up Grunkle Stan, she got that weird look you always get around Wendy! So she must have some good feelings for him… right?” Her eyes pleaded with him to not be wrong, making him swallow his words. He didn’t want to break her heart like this. She grabbed Grunkle Stan’s hand, squeezing tightly, almost willing him to be okay.
“Oh, you little dudes should be in bed. He’ll be okay. He’s ended up on the ground harder than this.” Soos had made them jump, sounding as dismissive as he could have of their Grunkle’s state. Dipper couldn’t tell if he was telling the truth or lying like adults do when they think they’re helping. The worry rimming Soos’ eyes told him it was probably the latter. But with that statement, Stan gasped loudly, gripping the arms of the chair with white knuckles as he shot up straight. His chest rose and fell heavily as his head whipped around wildly, looking for something or someone that wasn’t there.
“Honey! Wha…where? Kids? Ugh…oy, my head.” He groaned, rubbing the lump that had risen prominently on his skull. Mable launched herself at him, near sobbing as she buried herself into his chest.
“Grunkle Stan, I’m so sorry I put you in danger. I’ll never do it again.” Grunkle Stan didn’t hesitate to sweep her up into a huge hug, squeezing her tightly and smoothing over her hair comfortingly.
“No, pumpkin, this wasn’t your fault. Nothing you did led to this.” He set her down, rising unsteadily. Soos went to his side to help him stay upright.
“You should sit down, Mister Pines; you took a pretty good whack to the head.” Soos said, looking worried as he tried to sit Grunkle Stan back in the chair. Stan had other plans clearly though, as he took a deep breath and gently pushed Soos’ hand out of the way.
“Where’s my brother? We need to have a talk.” He looked angrier than Dipper had ever seen him, and Stan was angry pretty regularly. He stalked to the front door, pulling it open to reveal an empty car and a blood trail glistening in the grass outside the shack that disappeared a few feet from the car. He could see his Grunkle’s face twitch at the sight, grimacing and pale as he quickly made his way back through the gift shop and to the vending machine that hid the elevator to the lab. As it made its way up, he turned to them both, deadly stern as he gave them instructions.
“You two. Bed. Now. I don’t want to see you until morning. Soos, you make sure the stay here and upstairs.” Dipper gulped, looking at his sister through the corner of his eye. She was upset clearly, but he could also tell the wheels in her head were already turning, trying to decide how they would handle this. They both nodded in superficial agreement, knowing when the time presented itself they would find a way to figure out what was going on. With that, Stan stepped into the elevator, heading down to confront his brother about whatever had happened that night after they had left.
“Well, kids. You heard him. Back up to bed.” Soos sighed, ushering them back down the hall to the stairs. Mable turned, her bottom lip quivering as she looked at Soos.
“Is everything going to be okay? Where is Honey? Maybe we should talk to her and find out what happened." Soos shook his head, trying to dissuade her from further questioning.
“I think it’s probably best that they figure this out on their own. You two should go try to get some sleep. We’ll find out more in the morning.” He watched them as they slunk back upstairs, making sure they were out of sight before they heard him make his way back down to the hall, probably to wait for one or the other of their Grunkle’s to come back upstairs. As they made their way down the hall, they paused outside their Grunkle Stan’s office/bedroom, peeking at each other before making the joint decision to go in.
Dipper scrunched his face at the dark room, stumbling as he tried to find the lamp that lit the small room, moonlight pouring through the window set high and deep in the plaid papered walls. He grumbled under his breath as he stubbed his toe on the bed frame that had been haphazardly set up in the temporary bedroom, finally reaching over to turn on the lamp that sat on his old desk. It flickered to life, a small buzzing noise humming from the bulb as it slowly brightened the room. Mable dove in, quickly making her way behind his desk to dig through the drawers.
“Why do you think he has these?” Mable held up a pair of handcuffs. Dipper just shrugged.
“Maybe a keepsake from his old crime days? Or maybe his recent crimes? Honestly, take your pick; either is a good guess.” Dipper rolled his eyes as Mable put them back, moving to another drawer that held a stack of papers, all in an indecipherable code. Dipper moved to his sister’s side, scanning the text clearly in his Grunkle’s handwriting, doodles of his Lil’ Stanley character in the margins of the scrambled text, and symbol combinations that littered the page.
“Do you think you can figure out what it says?” Mable asked quietly, turning the pages over in her hands. Dipper shrugged.
“Do we want to?” He wasn’t sure he wanted to know what his Grunkle had deemed worth coding in the first place. What if it was as bad as when they gave him the truth teeth last year? That had almost been disastrous. But something told him they weren’t going to be told anything otherwise. He sighed, unsure they had a choice, grabbing the papers from his sister before shutting the drawer they had taken them from.
“Will they be important at all? He didn’t have them locked up or hidden…” Mable continued to dig through the room, moving to a dresser they had moved in for his clothes, throwing a few items on the floor as she looked for anything relevant. After a couple minutes of no luck, a noise from downstairs had them scrambling, Mable quietly closing the door behind them as they tried to make it back up to the attic before they heard Stan stomping up the stairs and slamming his door shut behind him.
“I’ve never seen him so angry… and I’ve seen him pretty angry.” Mable whispered as they gathered in the middle of their room, looking over the notes. Dipper pursed his lips, looking over similar sections, trying to figure out the base letters. It might take him a minute—time he wasn’t sure they had.
“Yeah, something weird is up with this whole situation.” Another door slam, followed by stomping out the door, made them run to the window, spotting their Grunkle stalking out of the house, wearing all black and carrying a suitcase and a bat. Nothing about this screamed good.
“Mable, we need to figure out what’s going on and make a plan.” They were still watching as their Grunkle came back inside. That’s when it hit him.
“Let’s hide in the car, in the back, where he won’t see us. Then we can follow along and figure it out.” Mable nodded solemnly.
“I need to make my love match work. No matter what.” Dipper sighed heavily. Did she not understand this was Honey’s fault?
“Mable, I don’t think this is time for that. She obviously has a part in this.” Mable shook her head, unwilling to agree with his assumption of the situation.
“I don’t think she ever lied to me about herself. And I’m an expert at telling when people are lying.” She stated it matter-of-factly. He shook his head at her.
“Are you an expert on everything?” Dipper asked, rolling his eyes at his sister’s unwavering confidence in her abilities.
“I think I know more than you when it comes to matters of the heart.” Dipper grabbed her wrist, pulling her to the hall as they snuck their way downstairs. By the creak of the stairs, they could tell Grunkle Stan was coming back up the stairs, moving back into his room.
“Go, he probably won’t be in there for long.” He whispered fiercely to his sister, both of them creeping along the wall and down the stairs. Great Uncle Ford must have stayed down in the lab; no sign of him around the main house. Dipper took the lead as they made their way through the kitchen and into the living room, not wanting to use the side door in case it alerted their Grunkle Stan to their sneaking. As they entered the dark hall, a small voice almost made Dipper scream out loud.
“Sneaking out?” It was Abulita, standing eerily in the dark. She had a knack for watching the whole house without anyone knowing.
“Abulita, do you know what’s happening?” Mable asked as quietly as possible. Abulita shook her head.
“No, I have not had such a chance to speak to Soos. He will tell all to me. Check back soon.” They nodded to her, moving past her silently as they snuck out the front door of the shack, spotting Stan’s red car parked not far from them. Dipper ran to the door on the side of the car that wasn’t facing the shack, opening it and waving Mable in. She followed with little hesitation, diving into the car and hiding low behind the seat where Stan wouldn’t notice them. Mable and Dipper held hands for a second, squeezing tightly and then letting go as they waited, unsure what they were diving into head first with their Grunkle again.
^^^^^^^^^^^
Stan’s head swam as he rode the elevator down to his brother’s lab, his heart pounding with fury and pain. How had the night taken such a poor turn? He wanted to punch something, absolutely destroy something, and he would start with his brother’s little sound gun thingy. As soon as the elevator met the floor, he was out and yelling, his brother’s wild-eyed stare meeting him as his voice echoed off the walls.
“Ford! What did you do? And where is she?” He growled, slamming his fist into a table, his head still spinning. Ford looked concerned as the world tilted for him slightly, his balance faultering as he tried to indignantly demand restitution for his ruined date from the wrong person. Before he knew it, he was leaning heavily into the same table he had just slammed into. Ford was by his side immediately, guiding him into a chair. Stan took a deep breath, wanting to raise immediately before Ford held a hand to him.
“Stanley, have you been enchanted? Has she sang to you? This is why I warned you of these anomalies. They’re dangerous.” He spoke softly, in a pitying voice that made Stan’s eye twitch.
“You have no idea. Not a single clue who she is. You won’t even give her a chance.” His fury muted as the words tumbled from his lips, her pleading worry the night before sitting in the forefront of his mind. She was right; he couldn’t protect her, and he shouldn’t have made the promise. It was too much, tears brimming his eyes in a way he didn’t know how to handle. How could he have let this happen again?
“Stanley, we need to deprogram you. She has messed with your mind and made you believe she is the only important thing so she can literally eat you like she was in the process of doing to those agents. I should have guessed, she wasn’t an agent but an anomaly! When we get you right again, we will capture and study her. Can you imagine what we will learn? You will see it’s just a trick of the mind.”
“Sixer, no.” He put his hands to his face, pressing hard before looking back at him, tears beginning to trickle down his face. “Can’t you just listen to me for once in your stubborn life? That woman was trying to save me. I didn’t know it at first, but I’ve been remembering. We’ve known each other for over forty years. Just… really spaced out.” Ford made a face, the concern deepening on his face, his eyes distressed at this admission.
“This creature has been after you for forty years? And you never exterminated it?” Their horrified expressions mirrored each other, but for different reasons, Stan shaking his head.
“I know you would struggle to understand this after your own... ‘anomalous run in’,” Ford’s own eye twitched at the mention of his old muse, clearly unhappy with the comparison, but he didn’t argue. “This is not the same thing. I care for her, more than I’ve ever cared for anyone but you and the kids.” Although it had been actively clawing its way out for the last week, it was the first time he’d said it out loud. He swallowed hard, unsure how to make his pleas be heard by his brother.
“I don’t know how to get through to you, Stanley. She has altered your already fragile mind.” This was going nowhere.
“Where is she? What did you do with her?” His voice cracked on his last question, almost hoping desperately that Ford had taken her in. At least she would be safe if she was in the lab. But as he scanned the room, it was clear she was not there. He did spot what he thought might be the sound gun Ford had used against her earlier. He stood, moving across the room to grab it before hoisting it high and slamming it against the floor, putting his foot to it a couple times for good measure, leaving it mangled and shattered.
“Stanley, do not break my things just because you’re upset at your own falters with this creature. It’s no harm though; we will get you fixed. You don’t have to worry.” He growled, frustrated at his brother, who, as usual, had a one-tack mind. In the corner of his eye, he spotted a good amount of blood in the disposal sink in the lab. Fear slinked in front of his fury, sure there would only be one reason blood covered his brother’s lab after tonight.
“I’m going to find her. Even if I tear this entire room apart.” Stan’s breathing began to get ragged as panic set in, needing to know why there was so much blood. He didn’t remember her being very injured in the attack, only Ford having really done any amount of damage to her.
“She’s not here, Stanley. You were my priority. Tate took a solid swing at your head, and you went down immediately. He was extremely angry that his father was involved and told me to get you out of there and demanded he take Fidds home. He also seemed overly fond of the creature, so I left her there and got you out of danger.” He sounded annoyed and dismissive, clearly tired of this discussion. “This needs to go no further. You should stay home and get some rest. You can barely stand; you certainly have a concussion.”
Stan, bleary-eyed from tears, turned, not willing to fight again in the same space that had brought him so much heartache before. He would find her, with or without his brother’s help. He wouldn’t accept it this time around; that was how he lost her last time. How would life have been different had he been around for just a little longer? Nothing would stop him now. Without words, he left the lab, wiping his face and taking a determined breath as he heard Ford call after him.
“Go rest, Stanley. We will talk more in the morning when your head feels better.” The door closed on his last words, leaving odd silence in the small space. He made his way up to his room, slamming his door behind him so he could change into his crime clothes and grab his covert item briefcase. He groaned, aching as he pulled on his all-black clothes, a black beanie hat, and black gloves before getting under his desk to grab the stuff he would need to find her.
“I’m gettin’ too old for this,” he grumbled to himself, sighing as he grabbed his cell phone. The kids had insisted he get one to communicate through the winter. Stan found he left it behind a lot, not used to carrying a telephone on him wherever he went. He knew he would need it tonight, though. Grabbing his tools and his bat, he made his way back out to the Stanley mobile, throwing some things in the back seat before realizing he had forgotten rope.
Stan had expected Ford to try and stop him, knowing the cameras were catching his every movement. Much to his surprise, though, no one appeared to ask questions or restrict him to the shack. He didn’t hesitate to wonder why, only trying to be swift and grab the stuff he thought he would need before heading out to his car. Grabbing the cell phone, he brought up his contacts, calling Wendy as he got in.
“Hey kid, I need your help. Your cousin is in trouble. Yeah, I can be there in ten.” Ending the call, he tossed it on the seat, pulling out before heading towards Wendy’s house. She was talented at mischief and sneaking. He would need someone on his side tonight who wanted to help and who wanted what was best for her. Wendy fit the bill perfectly. He sped towards town, determined to not repeat his mistakes thirty years later.

It's short wait for her at Harper's office, as always. The doctor is surprisingly accomodating whenever she stops by, and Avery isn't sure if it's the money talking or something else that makes her so cooperative. This makes all interactions with the good doctor so very uncomfortable.
"How have you been?" Harper asks, smiling pleasantly. She has one of those unsettlingly calm faces. It might be comforting for something else, but to Avery it's like a still lake. Probably swarming with bacteria and parasites, that is.
"Fine." Avery is always curt to her, albeit polite. "I just want my prescription. I have work today until later, and i'm all out of my medicine."
"On a sunday?" Harper's eyebrows shoot up. "My, that must be stressful."
"You're also working on a sunday." Avery points out, with a hint of a frown on her face.
"Yes, but i like my job." Harper gives her another one of those unnerving, placid smiles.
Avery doesn't like the implication of her words, but she keeps quiet. She needs to stay on the doctor's good side, at least until she gets another supplier.
"And you're in luck." Harper says, getting up to grab something in a cabinet behind her desk. "I've just gotten samples of your prescription, so you don't even need to go to the pharmacy."
She holds out two little bottles of pills, unlabeled, unlicensed opiates. Likely stronger than the stuff she could buy anywhere else. Avery can't help but get a bit excited to feel that high again, as her tolarance built up over the years.
"That's nice." Avery smiles carefully. "How much?"
"Because it's you... I guess ÂŁ20000 will do." Harper decides. "A discount for a regular. So?"
"Hey, that's steep." Avery frowns, but Harper seems completely unfazed, as always.
"You can always just grab the usual." Harper shrugs, setting the bottles down on her desk, then getting in front of them as she leans back on her desk. "Ah, i hate to see you looking so sad. I can give you a prescription for the pharmacy for the same price as always, or..."
"Or?" Avery raises an eyebrow at the doctor. She doesn't like her tone, but if it's a good offer...
"You can help me with research, and i'll dock the price." Harper's smile widens a bit as she says it. "Answer some questions for me, and i can do it for around... ÂŁ15000. What do you say?"
Avery has blinks a little. That big of a discount, just for answering some questions? It had to have a catch, but... The temptation of something that could give her a decent high was too strong.
"Okay, fine, but make it quick. I have work." Avery hurriedly replies, and Harper's claps once like a little kid.
"Okay, great! Let me just..." The doctor turns and grabs a clipboard and pen from her desk, scribbling something on the paper. "Whenever you're ready."
"Let's get this over with already." Impatient, Avery has to hold back from rolling her eyes at the pretense of profissionalism.
"Right, first question. What drugs do you usually take?" Harper asks, and as Avery shoots her a glare, she explains. "Drug is an umbrella term that describes medicines, too, as i'm sure you know. I'm not implying anything here, miss Avery, please don't be offended."
"You know that already, then." Avery huffs, but Harper just chuckles a little.
"For the purposes of research, i can't assume anything about the subjects. Now, if you'd be kind to tell me..." She insists.
"God, fine." Avery reluctantly lists them, by brand rather than name, to emphasize their legal status just in case that file falls in the wrong hands. Harper seems a bit amused by this, but doesn't comment on it.
"You smoke, correct?" Harper asks, and Avery takes a moment before nodding.
"Just occasionally." She adds, making Harper shoot her a look. Whatever, she didn't need to prove anything.
"What about alcohol?" Harper continues.
"...Socially." Avery replies, and Harper sets down the clipboard.
"Miss Avery, i know i said i shouldn't assume anything about the subjects, but i'd like it if you were truthful." Harper almost sounds like she's begging, and Avery hates that it could work if she didn't know better. "Don't worry, nobody else is going to see this, and your name won't be on it. It's... Personal research."
Avery lets out a loud sigh as she looks away from Harper's pleading eyes.
"Fine, yes, i do drink more than socially, but i'm not an alcoholic or something! Put that down exactly like that!" Avery half-growls, her impatience getting the best of her, and she hates even more that Harper seems pleased by that.
As Harper takes her time writing, Avery looks at the watch on her wrist. She'll run late if the good doctor doesn't pick up her pace.
"Are we done?" Avery asks, not bothering to hide her irritation anymore.
"Two more questions." Harper grins at her. "Do you often mix alcohol and your usual drugs?"
"...Sometimes, so what? You said it'd be fine if the dosing was on the low side." Avery grumbles.
"It's usually fine, don't worry." Harper shakes her head. "Last question, how do you usually feel when you do that?"
She stares at Avery intensely, making her feel even more reluctant to answer.
"I feel fine." Avery replies, but Harper doesn't even bother writing it down. She wants details, clearly. "I don't know, i feel relaxed, my head feels lighter for a moment. Is that what you want to know?"
"A little more, if you will." There's a glint of something in Harper's eyes that Avery can't quite discern, maybe just a sick curiosity, or maybe something more dangerous.
"I... I get drunk easier. I guess. I suppose it makes me more willing to get drunk." Avery says, hoping that will satisfy the doctor, but she keeps staring behind her pink-tinted glasses, expecting even more. "Sometimes when i fall sleep like that and wake up i don't remember much, but it feels like a really good night's sleep."
Harper nods and quickly scribbles something, as Avery starts to tap her foot on the floor unconsciously, wanting to get out of there as fast as possible. When Harper looks at her again, there's an intensity in her gaze that wasn't there before.
"I have another offer to make." Harper says, her grin widening as she reached for the bottle behind her. "If you take one of those right now, i'll give you another ÂŁ5000 discount."
Avery feels a chill run down her spine, something telling her that this would be a bad idea. The alarm on her phone goes off and warns her that lunch break is over, and she can't thank herself enough for setting it up earlier.
"No, i'm already late." She gets up, and Harper's smile fades a little. "I'll just pay for the samples, thank you."
Before she even finishes speaking, the money is already out of her wallet and being shoved in Harper's direction, but the doctor takes an awfully long time before reaching for the bank notes. There's an almost forlorn look on her face as she hands Avery the bottles.
"Next time i might make some ajustments." Harper says, sounding a bit defeated, though Avery knows it means it might get more expensive. Her smile is back shortly after, though. "Please tell me if it's any good."
"Yeah, yeah, i'll be in touch, thank you." Avery can't hide her relief to have ended that crazy negotiation.
The doctor's eyes fixate on her back as she leaves the office and closes the door maybe a bit too forcefully. It occurred to her, maybe a bit too late, that this might entice Harper's curiosity even more. With a shiver, she hoped that those little pills were enough to stop her from having nightmares about prodding, curious little needles and scalpels reaching for her forehead, trying to pick her head open like Harper always tried to do.

How to Choose the Right Direct Mail Marketing Company for Your Brand
Choosing the right partner is crucial to campaign success. The wrong choice can lead to missed deadlines, poor-quality printing, or ineffective delivery. Here's how to evaluate and choose the best direct mail provider for your needs.
Tumblr media
1. Evaluate Their Services
Start by checking the breadth of services offered.
Printing Capabilities: Do they offer offset, digital, or variable data printing?
Design Services: Can they help with layout and creative design?
Data Handling: Do they offer data processing, cleansing, and segmentation?
Mailing Options: Do they handle mailing logistics, postage optimization, and delivery tracking?
2. Check Their Experience and Track Record
A proven history of successful campaigns matters.
Industry Specialization: Some providers specialize in certain sectors like real estate, retail, or healthcare.
Portfolio and Case Studies: Look for measurable outcomes and innovation.
Client Testimonials: Ask for references or reviews from similar businesses.
3. Review Technology and Automation Integration
In the age of programmatic direct mail, your provider should be technologically adept.
API Integrations: Can they integrate with your CRM, e-commerce platform, or marketing automation tools?
Real-Time Triggered Mail: Do they support automated sending based on customer behavior?
Tracking & Analytics: Do they provide delivery and response analytics?
4. Consider Quality and Compliance
Your brand's image depends on quality and compliance.
Print Quality: Ask for print samples and compare resolution, paper stock, and ink vibrancy.
Data Security: Ensure they comply with privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).

How to Shortlist a Villa Project in 2025: 6 Red Flags & 6 Green Ones
With 2025 just around the corner, many families and investors are looking for the best villas to invest in 2025 — but how do you actually filter out the good from the not-so-good?
Whether you’re buying a villa to live in, rent out, or simply hold as an appreciating asset, there’s a method to the madness. Here’s a practical guide to help you shortlist your options smartly — 6 red flags to avoid, and 6 green flags that tell you you’re on the right track.
6 Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore
1. Vague or missing legal clearances If a project’s land title, layout approvals, or RERA registration isn’t clear, that’s a major red flag. Never go by word of mouth — demand documented proof.
2. Overpromising brochures, underdelivering sites If the model villa and the actual construction feel worlds apart, you’re likely dealing with a developer who prioritizes sales over quality.
3. Zero infrastructure in the area Even the most beautiful villa doesn’t make sense if the area lacks basic access roads, supermarkets, healthcare, and schools. Future growth is fine — but some groundwork should already exist.
4. “Too good to be true” pricing Massive discounts or rushed offers may signal cash flow issues or project delays. Good villa communities rarely need to offer panic pricing.
5. Poor online reputation Check community forums and previous buyer reviews. One or two complaints are normal — but a consistent pattern of late handovers, legal issues, or maintenance problems is not.
6. One-size-fits-all planning If the villas are packed together with minimal open space, odd layouts, or lack natural light, that’s a sign the developer has cut corners for profit.
6 Green Flags That Mean You’re on the Right Track
1. Location with upcoming social infrastructure Look for villa communities located near planned highways, tech parks, or educational hubs. These locations often mature quickly in terms of value and lifestyle.
2. Transparent paperwork and clear approvals Any builder who gives you access to legal papers, sanction plans, and updates is one you can trust. Clean titles are always step one.
3. Smartly planned community layout A well-thought-out master plan with walkways, green zones, visitor parking, and clubhouse access reflects genuine long-term thinking.
4. Commitment to quality finishes Check for branded fittings, flooring, and windows. If site visits and sample units meet your standards, it’s a positive sign.
5. Amenities that actually matter A clubhouse is great, but essentials like good drainage, water security, solar support, and security systems matter more in the long run.
6. Happy residents in past projects Ask to visit a past community built by the same developer. If the residents seem happy, you’ll know they stand by what they sell.
Choosing the best villas to invest in 2025 comes down to asking the right questions and spotting the signs early. Whether you’re using a villa buying checklist 2025 or creating your own, keep your goals clear. Are you buying for personal use? For future resale? Or to rent it out in a growing suburb?
The more clarity you have, the better your choices will be. And remember — the right villa doesn’t just give you space, it gives you peace of mind.
Looking for reliable projects to explore? Start your journey with brands that prioritize clarity, community, and construction quality, like Ayathi Projects.

What Should You Ask Before Hiring a Gold Coast Printer?
Choosing the right Gold Coast printers for a business or personal project can significantly impact the final results. Whether printing business cards, brochures, banners, or custom merchandise, ensuring high-quality service is essential. Asking the right questions before hiring a printing company can save time, money, and frustration.
Tumblr media
1. What Printing Services Are Offered?
Not all Gold Coast printers provide the same range of services. Some specialize in digital printing, while others focus on offset or large-format printing. It is crucial to inquire about specific services such as:
Business card and brochure printing
Poster and banner production
Custom promotional products
Booklet and magazine printing
Specialty printing, such as foil stamping or embossing
Knowing the available services helps in selecting a printer that aligns with specific needs.
2. What Printing Technology Is Used?
Printing technology affects the quality and turnaround time of a project. Common types of printing methods include:
Digital Printing: Ideal for small runs and quick turnarounds.
Offset Printing: Best for large quantities and high-quality results.
Large Format Printing: Suitable for banners, posters, and signage.
Understanding the printing process ensures that the final product meets expectations.
3. Can Samples of Previous Work Be Provided?
Reputable Gold Coast printers should be able to provide samples or a portfolio showcasing their work. Examining these samples helps assess the quality of materials, print resolution, and overall craftsmanship. If possible, request samples related to the specific project being planned.
4. What Are the Turnaround Times?
Project deadlines are crucial, especially for marketing materials, event promotions, or business branding. Ask about:
Standard turnaround times for different types of printing jobs.
Rush order options and any additional costs involved.
Production schedules to avoid last-minute surprises.
A reliable printing company should provide clear timelines and deliver on schedule.
5. What Type of Paper and Finishes Are Available?
Paper stock and finishing options can make a significant difference in the final presentation of printed materials. Some important aspects to consider include:
Matte vs. glossy finishes
Thickness and durability of paper stock
Specialty coatings such as UV or soft-touch lamination
Discussing these options ensures the final product aligns with branding and design expectations.
6. What Are the Pricing and Payment Terms?
Cost is always a factor when choosing a printing service. Key pricing-related questions include:
Do they offer itemized quotes?
Are there discounts for bulk orders?
What are the payment terms and deposit requirements?
Are there any hidden fees for design modifications or setup?
Transparent pricing helps in making informed budgetary decisions.
7. Is There a Minimum Order Quantity?
Some Gold Coast printers have minimum order requirements, especially for offset printing. If only a small batch is needed, confirm whether digital printing is an option. Understanding order limitations ensures the printer can accommodate specific project needs.
8. Do They Offer Graphic Design Assistance?
Not everyone has access to professional design software or expertise. Some printers offer in-house design services or assistance in formatting artwork correctly. If graphic design help is required, check:
Design service fees
File format requirements (PDF, AI, PSD, etc.)
Proofing processes to avoid printing errors
9. What Sustainability Practices Are Followed?
Many businesses prioritize eco-friendly practices. Asking about environmentally responsible printing options, such as:
Recycled paper stock availability
Eco-friendly inks and sustainable printing processes
Waste reduction initiatives
Choosing a printer with sustainable practices supports environmental responsibility.
10. What Is the Customer Support Like?
Good customer service ensures smooth communication and issue resolution. Consider:
Response time to inquiries
Willingness to provide revisions or reprints if needed
Clear communication about order status and updates
A responsive and professional team enhances the overall experience.
Final Thoughts
Selecting the right Gold Coast printers requires careful consideration of services, technology, quality, pricing, and customer support. Asking these essential questions before committing to a printing provider ensures a smooth process and high-quality results. Whether for business branding, event promotions, or personal projects, a reliable printer can make all the difference.

Walking into a cannabis dispensary for the first time—or even as a regular—can feel overwhelming with all the products, strains, and accessories available. These insider tips will help you make the most of your visit and ensure you leave with exactly what you need.
Do Your Research First Before heading out, spend a little time online: Know What You Want: Decide if you’re looking for relaxation, focus, pain relief, or something else. Check the Menu: Many dispensaries post their menus online. Browsing beforehand helps narrow your options and save time. Understand Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with possession limits and consumption rules in your area.
Time Your Visit Wisely Visit during off-peak hours, like weekday mornings or early afternoons, for a more relaxed experience and personalized attention. Many dispensaries offer daily deals or discounts during certain hours—call ahead or check online.
Be Honest with Your Budtender Budtenders are there to help, but they’re not mind readers! Be upfront about: Your Experience Level: Whether you’re a seasoned user or a first-timer. Your Goals: Are you looking to relax, get energized, or manage a specific issue? Consumption Preferences: Do you prefer edibles, flower, oils, or something else?
Start with Small Purchases If trying a new product or strain, start with a small quantity to see how it affects you. Many dispensaries sell pre-rolls or single-dose edibles, perfect for sampling.
Ask the Right Questions Here are a few to keep in mind: What’s the THC/CBD ratio? Are there terpenes that influence the flavor or effects? What’s the onset time and duration of effects for edibles or tinctures? Can they recommend strains similar to ones you’ve enjoyed?
Don’t Be Afraid to Take Notes Keep track of the products you buy and how they make you feel. Many dispensaries also offer loyalty programs—tracking your purchases can help you maximize rewards.
Explore Beyond Flower Dispensaries offer a range of products beyond traditional flower: Edibles: Gummies, chocolates, and baked goods. Concentrates: For a more potent experience. Tinctures: Easy to dose and discreet. Topicals: Creams and balms for localized relief without psychoactive effects.
Respect Dispensary Etiquette Bring Your ID: Most dispensaries require it, regardless of your age. Be Patient: Especially during busy times, as budtenders work to help every customer. Limit Cell Phone Use: Some dispensaries have strict no-photo policies.
Be Open to Recommendations Sometimes, the best products aren’t the ones you planned to buy. Trust your budtender’s expertise and consider their suggestions.

Selecting the Best Printing Services Suppliers: A Guide for Organisations
Tumblr media
Having a dependable provider of printing services can have a significant impact on a company's branding and marketing efforts in today's competitive market. The right supplier helps keep a consistent and professional image across all printed materials, from high-quality business cards and brochures to large-format banners. Knowing how to select the appropriate supplier can save time, money, and ensure the best outcomes for any project.
Identify Your Printing Needs : Prior to contacting potential printing services suppliers, define your company's printing requirements. Are you primarily concerned with the production of marketing materials such as posters, flyers, and brochures, or do you require more specialized services such as packaging or product labels? While some suppliers specialize in a specific kind of printing, others provide a wide range of services. It is possible to narrow down your options by clearly comprehending your requirements, ensuring that you select a supplier with relevant experience and capabilities.
Evaluate Consistency and Quality : The quality of a printing supplier's work is one of the most important factors to consider. Request samples to assess the finish, ink, and quality of the paper. The majority of professional suppliers are more than happy to send samples of previous projects or show off their portfolio. Equal importance is given to consistency; Your brand should appear the same on all of your materials and print runs. If you want to help bolster the identity of your brand, look for a supplier that offers guarantees regarding print accuracy and color consistency.
Check for Options for Customization : Printing is not one-size-fits-all, and customizing your materials can add unique value. A good supplier will offer a variety of customization options to meet your specific requirements, such as choosing from a variety of paper weights and finishes, adding foil stamping or embossing, or selecting unique shapes and sizes. Your marketing materials can stand out if you can tailor products, making the experience for customers and clients more memorable.
Take into Account Turnaround Times :In business, time is often of the essence, particularly when launching campaigns or getting ready for events. Printing services suppliers services ought to be able to meet your deadlines without sacrificing quality. Find out whether they provide expedited services for urgent projects and what their typical turnaround times are. Suppliers whose delivery times are inconsistent should be avoided because doing so could interfere with your schedule and your business operations.
Look for Competitive Pricing and Value : Compare competitive and value pricing from a variety of suppliers; however, the cheapest option may not always be the best one. Evaluate the value provided by each supplier by comparing quotes. Some may provide additional services like design assistance, storage, and shipping, as well as package deals and bulk discounts. Gauging these variables against cost can assist with deciding the provider that offers the best harmony between cost and worth.
Evaluate Support and Customer Service : A supplier with great customer service can make printing much easier. Customer service that is prompt and knowledgeable is essential if you have questions about the design, require assistance choosing materials, or want to know where your order is at the moment. Look for testimonials or reviews that highlight the supplier's communication skills, ability to solve problems, and dependability.
Impact on the Environment : Today, many businesses strive to be more environmentally friendly. If your company places a high value on environmental responsibility, you might want to look for printing services suppliers that provide eco-friendly options like recycled paper or inks made from soy. This not only helps you lower your carbon footprint but also appeals to customers who care about the environment.
Conclusion, Finding a partner who understands your company's needs and consistently delivers high-quality products is the key to selecting the right printing services provider. Businesses can make informed decisions that support their brand and meet their printing goals by evaluating factors such as quality, customization options, turnaround times, pricing, customer support, and the impact on the environment.

I'm mad about science and how studies that say the brain isn't mature until 25 seem to be going on the assumption that that must be true, thereby changing how results are interpreted, and how difficult it is to find articles examining what IS happening that doesn't take the stance of "24 year olds are adolescents"
Like with the same data you can say "the brain isn't fully mature until age 25" or "at around the mid 20s neuroplasticity and myelination plateau."
While it is absolutely necessary to acknowledge that due to the current culture around age and capitalism in many places around the world that young adulthood is lasting longer than it used to (due to cultural markers of "real adulthood" like starting families, owning homes, having a career and not just a job, being pushed back in life and more people are either opting out or being forced to postpone), and therefore there needs to be stronger youth protections, discounts, etc (as well as better things overall regardless of age), I find it concerning that so many people are arguing that people aren't "really" adults until age 25. A major issue with this is the lack of rights and respect associated with youth - young people are treated like they're too immature to know any better. I've seen this reflected in how people discuss age gap relationships, starting families, and voting rights. Apparently at 23 you're old enough to start a family but too young to be considered a good parent by many (including in the left), but you're not old enough to make your own health care decisions. If you fit in with current ideas of the status quo and respectability in your culture/subculture, you're mature enough to make your own decisions. If you violate that respectability (by wanting to transition, wanting a hysterectomy, dating someone older than you) then you're just a little adolescent whose brain is too immature to make your own proper decisions.
Of course, the best way to combat this would be to fight for youth rights overall (including the rights of minors), but in the mean time I feel it is necessary to critique and to be a little skeptical of studies that argue the brain isn't fully mature by 25.
Of course, I recognise a big part of this is lack of scientific literacy in the general public, even when those studies are available for them to read. If it's in a peer-reviewed paper, and especially if it confirms already held beliefs, people don't question it. But as far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), the general public doesn't know how to critique a scientific paper. They don't know about examining sample size and participant recruitment tactics, and examining definitions (what IS maturity? How is it defined? Why is it defined that way? How does that change over time or across culture?), nevermind the neurology discussed in these papers (I doubt that many of the people that do try to read these papers understand what myelination is).
And I guess one way to counteract that and to help people to understand would be to do a literature review meant for laymen, or at least to simplify papers for the average person. But honestly I can't do that, I have other things I need to be doing and which I'm stressed about.
Sigh.
