That I could survive the dissolution of my ego and its defenses was surely something to be grateful for, and we talked at length about this. What a remarkable gift: to learn that we can let go of so much — the desires, fears and defenses of a lifetime! — without suffering complete annihilation. This might not come as a surprise to Buddhists or serious meditators, but it was news to me, who had never felt anything but identical to my ego. Could it be that there is another ground on which to plant our feet? For the first time, I began to understand what the volunteers in the cancer-anxiety trials were telling me — how it was that a single psychedelic journey granted them a perspective from which the very worst life can throw at us could be regarded objectively and accepted with equanimity. I had been given a glimpse of that liberating perspective.
“That alone seems worth the price of admission,” Mary offered, and I had to agree. I also realized that I never would have achieved that perspective had Mary not guided me, creating a space where I felt safe enough to let go of my accustomed self and its usual defenses.
Yet 24 hours later, my old ego was back in uniform and on patrol, so what long-term good was that beguiling glimpse of a loftier perspective? Mary suggested that, having had a taste of a different, less defended way to be, I might learn to relax the ego’s trigger-happy command of my reactions to people and events. “Now you have had an experience of another way to react — or not react. That can be cultivated.” She suggested meditation as one way to do that.
Many researchers believe that the experience of “ego dissolution” that I had in Mary’s room can disrupt destructive patterns of thought and behavior and open us to new perspective from which to view death or addiction or depression. This was understood back in the 1950s and ’60s, when psychiatrists working with psychedelics sometimes described it as “therapy by self-transcendence.”
If the ego can be said to have an address, it would probably be in something called the default mode network, a high-level hub in the brain linking the frontal cortex to older centers of memory and emotion. The D.M.N. appears to be involved in a range of operations related to our sense of self, like rumination, time travel (contemplating the past and future), theory of mind (the ability to impute mental states to others) and the so-called autobiographical self: It helps us integrate whatever’s happening to us now with the story of who we are, thereby giving us an abiding sense of a self that is consistent over time. Neuroscientists recently began imaging the brains of people on psilocybin or LSD, and they were surprised to find that, rather than increasing brain activity, as you might expect, the drugs radically quieted traffic in the D.M.N. In particular, when volunteers report the experience of ego dissolution, their brain imaging shows a precipitous drop in D.M.N. activity.
Taking this network temporarily offline may allow the whole system to “reboot,” in the words of Robin Carhart-Harris, a pioneering neuroscientist who has done extensive work imaging tripping brains at Imperial College London. The “loosening of cognition” that results, he says, is especially helpful to people suffering from the varieties of mental stuckness, including depression, addiction, anxiety and obsession.

Electrochemical Machining: Definition, Principle, Equipments, Working, Process parameters
Introduction-
Electrochemical machining(ECM) is developed by W. Gussef in 1929. In this process, the material removal takes place using an Electrochemical process.
This machining process is usually used to remove metal from extremely hard materials or materials that are difficult to machine using conventional processes.
Want to know about the electrochemical machining process, from scratch to end?
Then, you landed in the right place.
Rest assured, you will get a complete guide of the ECM machining process from basic to advanced.
So, Seatback and relax while I start the engine of Engineers Rail.
Before I start, Here is the bonus for you. At the end of the article, You can download this whole article as a Pdf and enjoy it offline, whenever you needed.
So, without further delay, let’s dive in-
Table of Contents
What is Electrochemical machining?-
It is the method of removing metal from the electrochemical process, where DC current is passed between the tool(cathode) and workpiece(Anode) through an electrolyte is known as ECM machining.
In this process, a combination of electrical energy and chemical energy is used to remove materials from the workpiece.
Working Principle-
Electrochemical machining works based on Faraday’s laws of electrolysis.
The amount of metal removed by machining or deposited is calculated from faraday’s laws of electrolysis, Which states that-
The amount of mass removed by machining, m, is directly proportional to the amount of electricity.
m ∝ It
The amount of different substances dissolved, m, by the same quantity of electricity(It) is proportional to the substances chemical equivalent weight.
m ∝ ∈
Where ∈ = Chemical equivalent weight.
Here,
ECM uses s direct current at a high density of 0.5 to 5 A/mm² and a low voltage of 10 to 30V.
The machining current passes through the electrolytic solution that fills the gap between an anodic workpiece and a pre-shaped cathodic tool.
The electrolyte is forced to flow through the interelectrode gap at high velocity, usually more than 5m/s to intensify the mass and charge transfer through the sublayer near the anode.
The electrolyte removes the dissolution products, such as metal hydroxide, heat, and gas bubbles, generated in the interelectrode gap.
The example of the dissolution reaction of iron in sodium chloride(NaCl) water solution as an electrolyte.
The result of electrolyte dissolution and Nacl dissolution leads to-
The negative charge anions OH– and Cl– moved towards the anode and positively charged cations of H+ and Na+ are directed to the cathode. At the anode, Fe changes to Fe++ by losing two electrons.
Fe→ Fe++ + 2e
At the cathode, the reaction involves the generation of hydrogen gas and hydroxyl ions.
2H2O+2e→H2 +2(OH)–
The outcome of these electrochemical reactions is that iron ions combine with other ones to precipitate out as iron hydroxide, Fe(OH)2
Fe+2H2O→Fe(OH)2+H2
The ferrous hydroxide may react further with water and oxygen to form the ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH)3
4Fe(OH)2+2H2O+O2→4Fe(OH)3
With this metal electrolyte combination, electrolysis has involved the dissolution of iron, from the anode and the generation of hydrogen, at the cathode.
Electrochemical Machining Equipment & Construction-
There are several electrochemical machining equipment used to construct the electrochemical machine in the electrochemical machining process-
Dc power supply
Table
Workpiece
Tool
Feed Unit
Electrolyte
Pump
Filter
Pressure gauge
Flow Meter
Dc power supply-
The DC power supply used in this process is from 3 to 30V. The DC power supply is used to create a potential difference between the workpiece and the tool and make them act as anode and cathode respectively.
Table-
The table used to hold the workpiece on the top of it.
Workpiece-
This the object from which material is to be removed. The workpiece is connected to the positive terminal of the DC power supply and acts as an anode.
Tool-
This tool is connected to the negative terminal and acts as a cathode.
The too(cathode) should have good thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity and also should be corrosion proof.
The most commonly used tools in the ECM machining process are stainless steel, brass, copper, etc.
Feed Unit-
It is used to constantly move the tool downward towards the workpiece.
Electrolyte-
The electrolyte is used to establish an electrical connection between the anode and the cathode so that positive and negative ions flow from these two.
The electrolyte is used to remove the heat produced from the passage of the current.
The most commonly used electrolyte used in the ECM process is salt electrolytes like sodium chloride and sodium nitrate.
Pump-
This pump is used to pump the electrolyte towards the gap between the cathode and anode.
Filter-
The filter is used to filter the electrolyte and remove the unwanted particles from the electrolyte.
Pressure gauge-
The pressure gauge is used to control the pressure at which the electrolyte is supplied to the system of electrochemical machining.

What's happening in Thailand? Youth activists rally to protect democracy, freedom of speech

What's happening in Thailand? Youth activists rally to protect democracy, freedom of speech
Youth activists have led protests in 55 out of 77 provinces.
Pro-democracy protesters, led by students from the Free Youth group and the Student Union of Thailand, calling for democratic reforms on July 18, 2020, at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok. Photo and caption by Darika Bamrungchok.
This article by Darika Bamrungchok is from EngageMedia, a non-profit media, technology and culture organization. This story was edited and republished on Global Voices as part of a content-sharing agreement. After years of repression, censorship, and injustice under a pro-military government, thousands of protesters in Thailand are taking to the streets and to the internet to call for political changes and democratic reforms. What started as pro-democracy rallies by students in February 2020 have now evolved to countless protests led by Thai youth and students as young as 14-years-old against the pro-military government taking place almost daily in at least 55 out of 77 provinces nationwide.
Three demands
This student-led pro-democracy movement is the first time in modern Thai history that the Thai monarchy had been talked about publicly in a critical way since doing so is a jailable offense. The protests, led by the Free People Movement, are demanding changes in a country with a long history of suppressing dissent. Under the overarching goal to have “a democratic form of government with the monarch under the constitution”, the movement is demanding three key changes to the current Thai government: dissolve the Parliament, re-write the military-backed constitution, and stop intimidating and arbitrarily arresting critics. But much like recent attacks on freedom of expression online in neighbouring Philippines and Hong Kong, Thai protesters and media are increasingly being silenced by their government in both physical and digital spaces. Just this August 26, Free People Movement leaders Tattep “Ford” Ruangprapaikitseree and Panumas “James” Singprom were arrested for their role in the July 18 anti-government rally. They have since been granted bail. A day earlier, after pressure from the Thai government, Facebook had blocked access within Thailand to the “Royalist Marketplace”, a group with over a million members where Thai citizens could discuss the monarchy. Almost immediately, however, Facebook said it was prepared to legally challenge the Thai government’s request. As of writing, a new group with the exact same name has already emerged, with over 500,000 members joining within the first day of its creation. On top of these crackdowns, the local Thai media also cannot freely report on the state’s harassment and intimidation against protesters out of fear of being targeted by the government’s legal measures and financial backlash.
The first wave of protests
In late February 2020, the first wave of student protests across Thailand was initially triggered by the Constitutional Court’s dissolution of the pro-democracy Future Forward Party, an opposition party popular among younger voters. Soon after, the Thai government signed an emergency decree prohibiting anti-government rallies in the name of curbing the spread of COVID-19. But by June, Thais had grown even angrier at the government due to the increasing economic hardship brought on by the pandemic, the disappearance of Thai anti-government activist Wanchalearm Satsaksit in Cambodia, and the perceived failings of the justice system in the case of Vorayuth Yoovidhya [a billionaire heir accused of killing a police officer during a car crash in 2012. The case against him was dropped triggering public outcry against impunity for the rich].
The second wave of protests
This combination of grievances, along with the easing of lockdowns in the country, sparked the second wave of protests. On July 18, the Free Youth group and the Student Union of Thailand organized a peaceful rally in front of Bangkok’s Democracy Monument with over 2,000 protesters. This time, the student-led demonstrations were far more powerful and widespread, attracting a much broader cross-section of society. By August 16, more than 20,000 people repeatedly chanted, “Down with dictatorship, long live democracy”, at Bangkok’s Democracy Monument. This new generation of Thais are also harnessing technology to organize “flash” protests, bridging the gap between online and offline activism. Partly inspired by the Hong Kong movement, the Thai movement is largely leaderless, with participants primarily using social media to protest and mobilize more people throughout the nation. Anti-government sentiments and political discontent have spread quickly on social media, with various protest hashtags emerging on Twitter. Young protesters are also using various online platforms like Tinder and TikTok to spread their protest message, often using symbols, satire, and popular culture. But while the Thai government has maintained that people are allowed to express their dissent and desire for reform, it has increasingly harassed, detained, and initiated criminal complaints against student leaders and protesters who took part in the peaceful protests. While the government said the emergency decree’s extension to September won’t prohibit political protests, the police continue to summon protest leaders for violating the decree. This means the protesters can still be arrested for attending demonstrations, along with sedition and other repressive laws under the Thai Penal Code. Online, the shutdown of the Royalist Marketplace group on Facebook is a clear reflection of the dangers of expressing dissent against the Thai government and monarchy on the internet. The hashtag #NoTwitterThailand topped the country’s trending page in May as Thais grow increasingly critical of the government’s online surveillance and curtailment of freedom of expression. [This is linked to the launch of Thailand's official Twitter account in May which was followed by Twitter's privacy policy changes. This led many Thai activists to suspect about an intensified government surveillance]. Local media has also opened up about systematic censorship when it came to any coverage critical of the Thai monarchy. Between August 17 and 19, Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) documented 103 cases where students have been harassed or prevented from speaking their minds, including making the three-fingered salute, wearing white ribbons, or holding pieces of blank paper.
When Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan tried to get on the stage to speak, @BadStudent chanted at him: “Get in line. Get in line. Get in line.” #WhatsHappeningInThailand #ผูกโบว์ขาวต้านเผด็จการ #เลิกเรียนไปกระทรวง pic.twitter.com/l5KNPtOJdy — Thisrupt (@Thisruptdotco) August 19, 2020
At least 13 activists, including human rights lawyer Anon Nampa and two rappers, were arrested with the sedition charge, and they each could face prison sentences of up to seven years if convicted. At the time of writing, all were later released on bail. However, some activists have been tailed by security officers in plain clothes, and they believe that there is a list of 31 people that the police seek to arrest for speaking onstage. Because many of the protesters are students, there is increasing concern about the potential targeting of schoolchildren and young people amid the ongoing protests.

Listening Technologies
concept & ideation; reflection & awareness; framing & strategizing;
Introduction
Technologies that listen to their users are omnipresent in today’s society: smartphones, digital assistants, internet of things products etc. People seem not to realize how exposed they become by accepting these technologies in their lives. In this project we describe the process of exploring three concept designs that can potentially help generate critical commentary on how listening technologies exploit today’s users of technology. The authors imagine a world were privacy concerns in digital products are a thing of the past. Through their designs, they want to encourage makers help create a world of digital products and services that are honest, transparent and work effectively without storing nor exploiting personal information of their users.
What is Listening Technologies?
Listening Technologies, or Ubiquitous Listening as defined by Hui & Leong in 2017[1], primarily refer to technologies that are using user’s voice input in order to perform a task and produce a desirable output [1]. Smart speakers like Google Home and Amazon Alexa are clear examples of listening technologies[1,2]. They are there, in human context, waiting patiently for the correct voice command.
Tumblr media
Similarly, smartphones, smartwatches, health trackers, gaming platforms and generally most Internet-of-Things enabled devices use their sensors to gather data from their surroundings to produce value for their users. These systems operate to accumulate data, store, analyse and inform users. Data can be valuable as-is, like voice or video recordings. Although, they can become chaotic and invaluable soon after a bunch of them is stored. Data analysis can help generate meaning out of big data, send users personalized insights, optimize systems’ performance, save energy, control remotely, provide ‘data driven’ functionalities and effortless experiences. For example, Google Maps uses location data to keep a detailed history log of your locations called ‘Timeline’ so that you never forget where you parked your car or where you traveled to last year same day. Although, as Spencer K. Michael recently noticed “Google does not appear to have limits in its hunger for your Private Data“[3].
Tumblr media
Authors’ Point of View
In this project, we define Listening Technologies as the spectrum of smart devices and applications that can potentially infringe their user’s privacy. We will be using critical design as a tool to raise awareness about Data Leaks, Trust & Privacy issues and Lifestyle Data (pictured above) around Listening Technologies. We believe the developments in listening technology can also lead to changes in social contexts. The fact that we are getting more aware of being recorded will change our dialogues. It will have a big influence on how we talk to each other.
Our Ethical Vision
The authors imagine a world were privacy concerns in digital products are a thing of the past. Through their designs, they want to encourage makers help create a world of digital products and services that are honest, transparent and work effectively without storing nor exploiting personal information of their users.
Our Process
We conducted research on the topic of Listening Technologies, existing technologies and examples of critical designs. These examples were mapped into two semiotic squares[4]. The first was designed to oppose Existing Solutions with Critical Solutions that create effective commentary around Listening Technologies. The aim was to help us understand how to create effective critical designs and avoid providing a direct solution to the problem. The second was designed to oppose Active with Passive participation of the user in the Listening process. Active can be though of as ‘Aware that I am being listened’ and Passive as ‘Unaware that I am being listened’ by a specific technology. The aim of this semiotic square was explore different levels of awareness that Listening Technologies inspire. We wanted our critical designs to be able to raise awareness about the fact that people are being listened and they are oftentimes unaware of  it. Overall, the semiotic squares helped us define the meaning and values of existing products and similar critical designs. After the semiotic squares, we started concepting & ideation in two iteration cycles. We went from 13 concepts to 6 and then to 3 final concepts. In the end we reflected back on how these three concepts showcase best the problems we discussed about Listening Technologies and can potentially raise awareness about Data Leaks, Trust & Privacy issues and Lifestyle Data.
Outcomes
See the full 6 page paper with the comments from Gabriel Ferri on it, and his separate formative feedback here.
Iteration 1
During the first iteration the team explored a variety of different directions that could be followed to address the problem of Listening Technologies. During the first iteration we generated a large idea pool from which we narrowed down to 13 rigid concepts: Data wallet, Socio-filter, Erazor, Life on Demand, Chat Cap, Insta Lawyer, Secret Stick, Name Dropper, Bleep Censor, Zzoioi, Diceased FB Friends, Sub-AI, Transcript Shirt.
Tumblr media
Iteration 1: Our Process in Iteration 1 and the first 13 concepts.
Iteration 2
Tumblr media
Iteration 2: From 13 to 6 concepts, from left to right are Data Roll, U-tattoo, Tunnel Vision, Addiction Simulator, Data Bucks, Life Broadcast.
Iteration 3
Tumblr media
Iteration 3: From 6 to 3 final concepts: From left to right: Data Roll, Data Bucks, Life Broadcast are the final critical designs. They showcase how today’s technology infringes our privacy, how we ‘turn our backs to it’, how we are unaware of how much value our internet activity has, and how much can we leave listening technologies rule our everyday lives.
In the Iteration 3 we take a critical standpoint towards our previous 6 concepts. With the help of lecturer’s feedback we selected 3 leading concepts based on the following criteria:
Which three showcase best the problem space of Listening Technologies?
Which can potentially raise awareness about Data Leaks, Trust & Privacy issues and exposed Lifestyle Data?
Which make it easier for ordinary humans to understand the critical idea that the we wanted to communicate?
Data roll (image below) evolved into a backpack with a large printing roll. From the first sight, it designates that there are a lot to be printed! The wearer can hear and feel the device speeding up its printing the longer and quicker you surf with your smartwatch: cookies, location data, passwords, likes, comments, are all become instantly physical. Being a backpack works as a metaphor for not being able to see nor touch our data that ‘leak’ behind us and potentially expose our privacy to third parties. In case the users goes offline, the device will stop leaving traces behind. This gives the user actually a call-to-action: be more offline and risk less of your personal life.
Tumblr media
Data Bucks makes uses the reference of a wallet (physical product) and a screen (digital) integrated in one object. This way it communicates better that your data have value for some services. So go exchange your private date for a brand new toaster! Fill more online information, gain more data bucks! In a dystopia future, our data is the new currency. This concept comments heavily on how we have sold our privacy and wants to provoke a social ‘nudge’ before data creation becomes human labor where we literally sell our selves. As a drawback, there are some concerns about how to make Data Bucks concept easily understandable by older people.
Tumblr media
Life Broadcast showcases that once you use a Listening Technology you start to monetize. Data. Are. Money. They are also attention, and social recognition. Wearing a pair of these glasses can help you be famous and be part of a social movement but there is a pay for that: share every personal moment in your life - otherwise you are unable to see (and thus interact with the real world). This dystopia concept reveals that there might be a point of time in the future where privacy is completely dissoluted by ourselves for the name of showing off our Lifestyle. We want to generate commentary like ‘I don’t wanna live in such a future!’ or ‘There things I want to keep secret!’.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
As young digital designers we realize that we can use our practical design knowledge to make criticism on trending technological, cultural and social concerns that are upsetting the world we live in. The next step for us would be to make prototypes and showcase them to public and study to what extent are they critical on the topic. Can they potentially generate discussion around the ever-growing field of Listening Technologies? Are our fellow humans able to rethink the way they are using technology or even protest against it? And finally, back to our ethical vision. We believe through critical products like Data Roll, Data Bucks, Life Broadcast we can inspire designers and developers become more cautious on the way they build new products. We believe young designers, together with users of technology, can raise awareness and lead a future world were privacy concerns in digital products are a thing of the past.
