The printer Momoro, who was one of the most capable and convinced leaders of the Hébertist party, did not play a mediocre role in the Parisian revolution—quite the opposite!

As the editor of the journal of the Cordeliers Club, he was included in the prosecutions against the republicans after the unfortunate Champ de Mars affair. The week he then spent in prison brought him the sympathy and support of the sans-culottes. He joined the directory of the Paris department after August 10 and was assigned several missions by the Executive Council.

Raised to honors, he remained simple and profoundly democratic. He died as poor as he had lived.

The day after his execution, Fouquier-Tinville wrote to the administrators of the Doubs department on Germinal 5, Year II, inviting them to confiscate, for the benefit of the Republic, the properties that the condemned Momoro might own in Besançon, where he was born in the Parish of Saint-Pierre, on November 13, 1755.

At that time, Momoro’s father, who had worked as a shoemaker, was already dead. But his mother, who had taken a job as a servant after her husband's death, was still alive.

When the commissioners of the Besançon district went to her home, she had just died, probably from the shock of the news of her son's execution.

“Today, Germinal 11, Year II of the Republic, at eleven o'clock in the morning, we, Jean François Denisot, member of the general council of the Besançon district, appointed by order of the same district on this day to affix seals at the home of the mother of the named Momoro, who has just suffered the death penalty in Paris, and having with us François-Joseph Bernard as our secretary clerk, we went to the home of citizen Forno, a war commissioner, where the said Momoro was a cook. There, we invited citizen Forno to show us the room of the said Momoro, to which she replied that she had died the previous night but was ready to introduce us to the room she occupied.”

End of the excerpt. But it must be emphasized that Momoro's inheritance was just a bit of linen, 26 livres and 400 livres in assignats. With this, it cannot be said that Momoro was wrong in his trial when he claimed he could not be accused of counter-revolution because he had given everything for the revolution (yes, the last sentence is my fangirl heart speaking XD).

In 1936 he followed a divine calling and entered the Sacred Monastery of Stavrovouni with the blessing of his parents. In the beginning of 1947 he entered the Skete of Saint Anna with certain compatriots who were living the monastic life there, but in the summer of the same year he met with the blessed Elder Joseph the Hesychast; He returned to Mt. Athos on October 26, 1981.  Elder Joseph was and remained the spiritual father of Vatopaidi Monastery until his falling asleep, which occurred on July 1, 2009. “

Forefeast of the nativity of the most Holy Mother of God

The first lesson at Great Vespers (Genesis 28:10-17) describes Jacob’s dream of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, and the angels ascending and descending upon it. The second lesson (Ezekiel 43:27-44:4) speaks of the gate of the sanctuary which faces east. God enters through this gate, which is shut so that no one else can enter by it. The third reading (Proverbs 9:1-11) talks about the house that Wisdom has built.

These readings are interpreted as prefiguring the Mother of Go

VENERABLE MACARIUS OF OPTINA (1860)

The time of Elder Macarius’s ministry as an elder is often hailed as the “Golden Age” in the history of Optina Monastery. Under his guidance, the monastery became a spiritual centre of Russia. During the latter half of the 19th century, it played a significant role in the gradual return to Orthodoxy within Russian culture, which had been under strong Western influence since the time of Peter the Great.

Mikhail Nikolayevich Ivanov was born into a noble family in the Oryol province. His great-grandfather, Ivan, was a monk of the Karachev St. Nicholas Monastery in Odryn, taking the name Joseph upon entering monastic life.

The future holy ascetic grew up in a pious family. His father, Nikolai Mikhailovich Ivanov, was in the civil service rank of a collegiate assessor. He and his wife, Elizaveta Alexeyevna, lived near the Lavrentiev Monastery in the village of Zheleznyaki, Kaluga province. On 20 November 1788, their son Mikhail was born. The child was named after St. Michael, Prince of Tver. After some time, four more children arrived: three sons and a daughter. The mother noticed that her eldest son differed from the other children and said that “something extraordinary” would come of this boy.

Years of study and entry into service

Elizaveta Alexeyevna died of tuberculosis in 1797 in Moscow, where the family temporarily resided for her treatment. After burying his wife, Nikolai Mikhailovich first settled with his children at their estate in the village of Schepyatino and later moved to his sister’s home in Karachev. The father enrolled his eldest sons in the town’s parochial school, where they remained until 1801 when his sister and her family moved to the countryside. There, Mikhail’s cousin acquired a home tutor. He also taught Mikhail and his brothers, as their aunt had taken them all into her village home.

Mikhail was the eldest. He lived in the village for about a year and then entered the service as an accountant in the Lgov District Treasury, where S. Ya. Sandulov, a relative of the Ivanovs, was in charge. Two of his kin, both named Alexei, became Mikhail’s assistants in the service, one his own brother and the other a cousin. Alexei Peredelsky, his second cousin, recalled: “Piety, godliness, chastity, meekness, and moral purity were always in his nature. He mostly avoided our childish games and amusements, preferring instead to engage in reading and crafts, like making cardboard models or embroidery. When he came of age, during his secular life, he did not shun decent social pleasures but did not show any particular inclination towards them either. He loved music... he also loved singing. His voice was weak, but this deficiency was compensated for by his knowledge and understanding of music.”

In 1805, Mikhail was appointed head of the accounting expedition office in Kursk and received a promotion in rank. During this period, Mikhail developed an interest in music and literature, devoting all his free time to these pursuits. While participating in society, he remained a humble man. Despite mingling with society, he remained modest; his shyness and thinness — owing to frail health since childhood — earned him the playful nickname “monk.”

In 1806, Mikhail Nikolayevich’s father departed to God leaving him and his siblings — four brothers and a sister — without parents. They remained united, supporting one another and making decisions collectively. At a family meeting, they agreed that the estate should be entrusted to the eldest son.

Mikhail resided in the village for two years but did not achieve success in managing the property. It is recounted that the servants even mocked the hapless landowner who refused to employ conventional methods — harsh punishments and reprimands. However, one incident stands out. Some peasants stole a large amount of buckwheat, an act that could not go unnoticed. Mikhail summoned them and admonished them with words from the Holy Scripture, urging them not to anger God. Deeply moved, the peasants confessed to their theft, repented wholeheartedly for their actions, and begged for forgiveness tearfully on their knees. Neighbours constantly sought his assistance, and he never refused anyone, never turned anyone away, even if it meant neglecting his own affairs.

His relatives tried to arrange a marriage for Mikhail, but they couldn’t find a suitable bride. In his heart, he was becoming increasingly firm in his desire to dedicate himself to God.

On October 6, 1810, Mikhail Nikolayevich set out on a pilgrimage to the Ploschanskaya Hermitage and never returned home. He sent a letter to his relatives, informing them that he was staying at the monastery and transferring the estate to his brothers’ full disposal. VENERABLE CASSIANI THE HYMNOGRAPHER (9th c.).

Saint Cassiani (Cassianḗ) is a well-known Byzantine poet (ποιήτρια), who lived during the reign of Emperor Theophilos (829 – 842).

She was tonsured about the year 820, and founded a convent on Xerolophos, one of Constantinople's seven hills. There (according to the monk George the Sinful) she led "an ascetic and philosophical life" which was pleasing to God. She was an energetic Igoumeness who not only regulated the life of the convent, but also found time to pursue her literary interests. She combined the talents of poet, theologian and musician, writing hymns and composing musical settings for them. Originally sung by her nuns, many of her compositions have enduring value. At least twenty-three of her hymns were later included in the Church's liturgical books.

One of Saint Cassiani's most famous hymns is sung during Matins on Holy Wednesday, on the subject of the woman who had fallen into many sins, which is based on Saint Luke's Gospel (7:36-50).

Another of her hymns is sung in the Canon of Matins for Holy Saturday, and is repeated at the Midnight Office on Holy Pascha: "Do not weep for me, O Mother, beholding in the tomb the Son Whom thou hast conceived without seed in thy womb, for I shall arise. . ."

Saint Cassiani is not mentioned in the Synaxaristes (Synaxaristés), yet the inhabitants of Kasos, because of the similarity of her name with that of their island, celebrate her Feast Day on September 7. A special Church Service was composed in her honor, and it was published in Alexandria in 1889 by the "Reformed" (or "Reorganized") printing house.

It is strange, however, that this Service was dedicated to Patriarch Sophronios of Alexandria, who in turn gave it to Metropolitan Germanos (Germanós) of Thebes to be printed (on September 1, 1889). Thus, Cassiani's glorification by the Church of Alexandria was somehow formalized, as the inhabitants of Kasos desired.

For centuries Saint Cassiani's name has appeared at the end of all the lists of Byzantine poets. The first known list was compiled by Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos (Nikēphóros Kállistos Xanthopoulos) in the first half of the XIV century.

Saint Cassiani is depicted among the holy ascetics and other monastics in the icon for the Triumph of Orthodoxy on the first Sunday of Lent.

Le frère d'une des victimes, M. Lucien S.-Jean, nous a déclaré que ce serait au cours de la soirée que les deux malheureux auraient absorbé la boisson mortelle.

Il nous a encore déclaré qu'hier matin, Mme Hugues S.-Jean réveilla son fils, Marcel, à l'heure habituelle, pour aller travailler. Cependant, le jeune homme refusa de se lever, révélant à sa mère qu'il souffrait d'un violent mal de tête et de maux d'estomac. Elle lui demanda alors ce qu'il avait mangé ou bu la veille. Il répondit qu’il n'avait rien bu et qu'il se sentait simplement malade. Sur la fin de l'après-midi d'hier, M. Lucien S.-Jean constata que l'état de son frère empirait. "Les yeux lui sortaient de la tête", dit-il, et il avait l'écume à la bouche.

"Il était presque méconnaissable". C'est alors qu'll fit venir le Dr Laurin, de la rue Notre-Dame ouest, qui lui conseilla de faire transporter le malade à l'hôpital.

Yes! Paul Coutant, alias Stéfane-Pol, published two passports for Le Bas in his Autour de Robespierre : Le Conventionnel Le Bas, and I would be surprised if there aren’t other passports for him at the National Archives as well, as a representative on mission. NB: It seems I misremembered his height. Le Bas was only 5 pieds 5 pouces; in other words, around 176 cm.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT JOSEPH CALASANZ The Patron of Christian Schools Feast Day: August 25

"Those who instruct many in justice will shine as stars for all eternity."

Joseph Calasanz, a close friend of the renowned astronomer Galileo Galilei, the founder of the Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools, popularly in short as the Piarists, was born in Peralta de la Sal, Kingdom of Aragon, Crown of Aragon, on September 11, 1557, and the youngest of eight children and is the second son of Pedro de Calasanz y de Mur and María Gastón y de Sala. From an early age, he had consecrated his life to the Lord. In order to escape the attentions of a woman, he left the University of Valencia and took up Sacred Theology in Alcala.

Joseph's mother and brother having died, his father wanted him to marry and carry on the family. But a sickness in 1582 soon brought Joseph to the brink of the grave, which caused his father to relent. After his ordination on December 17, 1583 by the bishop of Urgel, Hugo Ambrosio de Moncada, Joseph understood the necessity of educating Christians at an early age.

During his ecclesiastical career in Spain, Calasanz held various offices in his native region. He began his ministry in the Diocese of Albarracín, where Bishop de la Figuera appointed him his theologian, confessor, synodal examiner, and procurator. When the bishop was transferred to Lleida, Calasanz followed him to the new diocese. In October 1585, de la Figuera was sent as apostolic visitor to the Abbey of Montserrat and Calasanz accompanied him as his secretary. The bishop died the following year and Calasanz left, though urgently requested to remain. He hurried to Peralta de Calasanz, only to be present at the death of his father. He was then called by the Bishop of Urgel to act as vicar general for the district of Tremp.

In 1592, he left Spain for Rome at the age of 35, where he opened a little school for the poor, who lived in a state of degradation and ignorance. A few years later, after convincing the pope of the need to approve a religious order with solemn vows dedicated exclusively to the education of youth, the congregation was raised to that status on November 18, 1621, by a papal brief of Pope Gregory XV, he founded the Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools aka the Piarists, whose purpose was the education of children and young people.

At a time when humanistic studies ruled the roost, Calasanz sensed the importance of mathematics and science for the future and issued frequent instructions that mathematics and science should be taught in his schools and that his teachers should have a firmer grounding in those subjects. Calasanz was a friend of Galileo Galilei and sent some distinguished Piarists as disciples of the great scientist. He shared and defended his controversial view of the cosmos.

When Galileo fell into disgrace, Calasanz instructed members of his congregation to provide him with whatever assistance he needed and authorized the Piarists to continue studying mathematics and science with him. Unfortunately, those opposed to Calasanz and his work used the Piarists' support and assistance to Galileo as an excuse to attack them. Despite such attacks, Calasanz continued to support Galileo. When, in 1637, Galileo lost his sight, Calasanz ordered the Piarist Clemente Settimi to serve as his secretary.

Joseph brought the same understanding and sympathy that he had shown to Galileo to his friendship with the great philosopher Tommaso Campanella, one of the most profound and fertile minds of his time, producing famous philosophical works. Although he was highly controversial as well, Campanella maintained a strong and fruitful friendship with Calasanz.

Joseph was besieged till the end of his life by trials and persecutions, which he bore with patience and humility. One time, through the conspiracy of some brethren, Joseph was demoted from his office and carried through the streets like a felon. Another time, the accusations of some envious priests caused a canonical visit. When the Pope decided to close down the Congregation, Joseph replied: 'The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.'

He died on August 25, 1648, at the venerable age of 90, admired for his holiness and courage by his students, their families, his fellow Piarists, and the people of Rome.

Eight years after his death, Pope Alexander VII cleared the name of the Pious Schools, his congregation was restored, and flourished throughout the world.

He is beatified by Pope Benedict XIV on August 7, 1748 and canonized a saint by Pope Clement XIII on July 16, 1787. Pope Pius XII declared him to be the 'Universal Patron of all Christian popular schools in the world.' on August 13, 1948.

His major shrine can be found at San Pantaleo. His heart and tongue are conserved incorrupt in a devotional chapel in the Piarist motherhouse in Rome. St. John Paul II affirmed that Joseph Calasanz took as a model Christ, and he tried to transmit to the youth, besides the profane sciences, the wisdom of the Gospel, teaching them to grasp the loving harmony of God.

New palliative care hospital brings ‘sweetness of Mary’ to poorest in Peru

In the context of the recent news of the death of Ana Estrada, the first person to request and receive euthanasia in Peru, there is a contrasting story to tell on care for the dying in that country: that of a new Catholic hospital on the outskirts of Lima that provides palliative care, which extends the love of Christ to those in extreme poverty who are in the final stages of their lives.

In 2021, Father Omar Sánchez Portillo, a priest known for his extensive charitable work in the district of Lurín (south of Lima) and founder of the Association of the Beatitudes, had the dream of building a center to serve, with the “sweetness of Mary,” people in situations of abandonment and extreme poverty who have terminal illnesses. After much prayer, he shared the idea with a German Catholic friend and philanthropist.

“We thought about it, we meditated on it, and we offered it to God as a dream of the heart. So, we dreamed of this and presented the initial project, a small project, to serve 10 people,” Sánchez said in an interview with ACI Prensa, CNA’s Spanish-language news partner.

In a virtual meeting with Bishop Carlos García of the Diocese of Lurín, Peru, Sánchez and the bishop told the philanthropist about this dream.

A painting of the Virgin Mary, dressed in a typical Peruvian, Cusco dress, adorned the meeting room. At one point, the German Catholic asked the bishop about the depiction of the Virgin. García responded that it was “Misky María,” which in the Indigenous Quechua means “Sweet Mary.”

Later, the German benefactor said: “That is going to be the perfect name for the palliative care hospital that I am going to give you, as a gift for the silver anniversary [25 years] of the Diocese of Lurín.” The bishop and priest, surprised, praised God and thanked the gentleman.

So it was that the hospital, with the capacity for 60 terminally ill patients, began to become a reality. It has an intensive care unit, palliative care, nursing, physical therapy, a kitchen, a chapel, and a funeral parlor. Care is provided free of charge and is provided by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, volunteers, and priests.

Construction began on Sept. 6, 2021, and the complex was inaugurated on Nov. 20, 2022. So far in their facilities, they have treated more than 100 patients who have already passed on. The hospital is currently treating 60 people with different types of terminal illnesses, such as cancer, AIDS, and other degenerative diseases.

“The spirit of this work is to transmit the sweetness of Mary. I always tell the staff who work with me: ‘Imagine how Mary cared for Joseph in his last days, for her husband, St. Joseph, in his last days.’ That is why St. Joseph is the patron saint of a good death, because he was accompanied by Mary and Jesus. So, imagine that and that is the first attention we have to give them,” Sánchez explained to ACI Prensa.

According to the priest, “a truly dignified death is one that occurs in peace and, if possible, in communion with God.”

Saint Bartholomew's Church

St. Bartholomew's (German: St. Bartholomä) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in the Berchtesgadener Land district of Bavaria in Germany. It is named after Saint Bartholomew the Apostle (Bartholomäus in German), patron of alpine farmers and dairymen. The church is located at the western shore of the Königssee lake, on the Hirschau peninsula. It can only be reached by ship or after a long hike across the surrounding mountains. A first chapel at the lake was built in 1134 by the Provosts of Berchtesgaden. In 1697 it was rebuilt in a Baroque style with a floor plan modeled on Salzburg Cathedral, two onion domes and a red domed roof. The church features stucco work by the Salzburg artist Joseph Schmidt and a three-apse choir. The altars in the apses are consecrated to Saint Bartholomew, Saint Catherine, and Saint James respectively.

An annual pilgrimage to St. Bartholomew's is held on the Saturday after 24 August, starting from the Austrian municipality of Maria Alm and crossing the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Near the chapel lies the old hunting lodge of the same name. The lodge, which was first erected in the 12th century with the church, has been rebuilt several times. Until 1803, it was a private residence of the Berchtesgaden Prince-provosts; after their territory had been incorporated into the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810, the building became a favourite hunting lodge of the ruling House of Wittelsbach; today it is an inn.

The church can be seen from a famous scenic viewpoint 743 meters above, which is called Archenkanzel.

Painter Rocco Ritchie, Son of Madonna, Takes a Bow with Miami Pop-Up

Madonna is dominating the Miami headlines this week, with a run of blockbuster concerts.

(After the first two sold out, a third was added for tonight.)

However, the renowned icon’s first son, Rocco Ritchie, is also making waves in the Magic City right now.

That’s because Ritchie, a talented painter, is prepping a two-day pop-up exhibition.

Titled “Pack a Punch,” it will features new paintings and be on view Wednesday and Thursday, April 10 and 11, at 30 NE 40 Street in Miami’s Design District.

(Its organizer, dealer Jessica Draper, said walk-ins are welcome on Thursday; otherwise, viewings are only by appointment.)

Born in Los Angeles in 2000, Ritchie studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal Drawing School in London, where he currently lives and works.

In his new works, Ritchie, who cites Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon as major sources of inspiration, is continuing his exploration of the human figure.

This presentation follows “Lovers and Enemies,” a solo show of Ritchie’s work in London last fall, where he showed portraits of his friends and family.

That one was curated by David Dawson, formerly Freud’s studio manager.

Ritchie’s parents (his father is film director Guy Ritchie) have been enthusiastic supporters of his painting practice, and his work is in the collections of fashion designers Stella McCartney and Donatella Versace and dealer Lorcan O’Neill, among others.

Artnet caught up with Ritchie on the eve of his opening to ask about his training, his inspirations, and his early years operating under a pseudonym.

When and why did you first pick up a paintbrush?

I’ve been painting since I was a small kid. It is something that always caught my attention and gave me a place to escape.

Did you have formal training?

I went to Central Saint Martins, but I developed my draftsmanship at the Royal Drawing School in London. I studied there for a few years.

Your paintings are figurative, bold, and almost expressionist, with an intriguing palette. Who are some of your biggest influences?

My influences have changed over the course of time, and what is happening in my life informs which artists I am looking at.

Recently I’ve been focusing on British painters over the past 100 years or so, such as Bacon, Freud, Auerbach, and David Hockney.

For this show, I was particularly inspired by Frank Auerbach’s show at the Courtauld; the black and white charcoal works on paper.

Can you tell us about the pseudonym, “Rhed,” that you went by initially?

Rhed was something I came up with to go under the radar in the first few years of making work.

It doesn’t hold much deep meaning behind it, I just liked the way it sounded.

I tried to go along with it for as long as I could, but word eventually got out.

Were you wanting to stay anonymous and/or were you unhappy about being identified?

I’m proud of who I am and where I’ve come from, but I know people would have judged me aggressively in my early stages if I came out with my name.

I wanted to develop technically before showing under my name.

Do you work with a particular gallery or someone who handles the sales of your work?

As of now I am working with [art dealer] Jessica Draper. I’ve worked with galleries in the past, I’m just waiting to find the right one.

Who are some of your favorite artists whether historical or contemporary?

My favorite artists vary from Leonardo da Vinci, to Rembrandt, to Paula Rego.

Contemporary wise, I really like the work of Joseph Yaeger and Lens Geerk.

VENERABLE BARSANUPHIUS OF OPTINA (1913)

Paul I. Plikhanov was born in the city of Samara on July 5,1845, the son of John and Natalia Plikhanov. His mother died in childbirth, and his father later remarried so that his son would have a mother. Although his stepmother was very strict, she was a real mother to him, and he loved her very much.

As a descendant of the Orenburg Cossacks, Paul was enrolled in the Polotsk Cadet Corps. He completed his studies at the Orenburg Military School and received an officer’s commission. He later graduated from the Petersburg Cossack Staff Officers’ School, and also served at the headquarters of the Kazan military district and eventually rose to the rank of colonel.

Once, as he was sick with pneumonia, Paul sensed that he was about to die. He asked his orderly to read the Gospel to him, and passed out. Then he had a vision in which the heavens seemed to open, and he was afraid because of the great light. His whole sinful life passed before him, and he was overcome with repentance. A voice told him he should go to Optina Monastery, but the doctors did not think he would recover. His health did improve, however, and the colonel visited Optina. In August 1889 the Elder of the Monastery was Saint Ambrose (October 10), who told Paul to set his worldly affairs in order. Two years later, Saint Ambrose blessed him to cut all ties to the world and told him to enter Optina within three months.

It was not easy for the colonel to resign his commission within the specified three month period, because obstacles were placed in his way. In fact, he was offered a promotion to the rank of general, and was asked to delay his retirement. Some people even tried to arrange a marriage for him, laughing at his intention to go to the monastery. Only his stepmother was happy that he wished to become a monk. On the very last day of the three months he concluded his affairs and arrived at Optina. However, Saint Ambrose was already laid out in his coffin in the church.

Saint Anatole I (January 25) succeeded Father Ambrose as Elder, and he assigned Paul to Hieromonk Nectarius (April 29) as his cell attendant. He was accepted as a novice in 1892, and tonsured as a rassophore in 1893. Over the next ten years he advanced through the various stages of monastic life, including ordination as deacon (1902), and as priest (1903). The monk Paul was secretly tonsured into the mantiya in December of 1900 because of a serious illness. When they asked him what name he wished to receive, he said it did not matter. They named him in honor of Saint Barsanuphius of Tver and Kazan (April 11). Although he recovered, they did not give him the mantiya until December of 1902 after the Liturgy when it was revealed that he had been tonsured on his sickbed.

On September 1, 1903 Father Barsanuphius was appointed to assist Elder Joseph, the skete Superior, in the spiritual direction of the skete brethren and the sisters of the Shamordino convent.

At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, Father Barsanuphius was sent to the Far East as a military chaplain, where he ministered to wounded soldiers. The war ended in August 1905, and Saint Barsanuphius returned to Optina on November 1, 1905.

Since Elder Joseph had become too old and frail to administer the skete’s affairs, Father Barsanuphius was appointed as Superior of the skete in his place. Father Barsanuphius soon reestablished order and discipline, paid off debts, repaired buildings, etc. As Superior, he combined strictness with paternal concern and tenderness for those under him.

Saint Barsanuphius, like the other Elders of Optina, possessed the gifts of clairvoyance and of healing people afflicted with physical and spiritual ailments. One of his spiritual sons, Father Innocent Pavlov, recalled his first Confession with the Elder. He became fearful because Father Barsanuphius seemed to know his innermost thoughts, reminding him of people and events which he had forgotten. The saint spoke gently and told him that it was God who had revealed to him these things about Father Innocent. “During my lifetime, do not tell anyone about what you are experiencing now,” he said, “but you may speak of it after my death.”

Saint Barsanuphius loved spiritual books, especially the Lives of the Saints. He often told people that those who read these Lives with faith benefit greatly from doing so. The answers to many of life’s questions can be found by reading the Lives of the Saints, he said. They teach us how to overcome obstacles and difficulties, how to stand firm in our faith, and how to struggle against evil and emerge victorious. Although the Lives of the Saints were widely available, it saddened the Elder that more people did not read them.

Saint Barsanuphius commemorated many saints each day during his Rule of prayer, and this was not accidental. Each saint, he once explained, had some particular importance in his life. If, for example, some significant event took place, he would look to see which saints were commemorated on that day, then he would begin to commemorate them each day. Later he noticed that on their Feast Day, they would often deliver him from some danger or trouble. On December 17, 1891, the commemoration of the Prophet Daniel and the three holy youths, he left Kazan and never returned. That was the day he decided to leave the world, and Saint Barsanuphius felt that God had delivered him from a furnace of passions. Just as the three youths were delivered from the fiery furnace because they would not bow down before idols, the Elder always believed that he left the world unharmed because he refused to bow down before the idols of lust, pride, gluttony, etc.

By 1908, Saint Barsanuphius seemed to fall ill more frequently, and began to speak of his approaching death. In April of that year, someone sent him a package containing the Great Schema. Father Barsanuphius had long desired to be tonsured into the Great Schema before his death, but he had told no one of this except for the archimandrite. Therefore, he regarded this as a sign that he would soon die.

One night in July 1910, the Elder became so ill that he had to leave church during Vigil and return to his cell. The next morning, July 11, he was so weak that he could not sit up by himself. That evening he was tonsured into the Great Schema.

Father Barsanuphius began to recover, but there were new problems in the monastery. New monks came in from spiritually lax environments. They did not understand the ascetical nature of monasticism or the whole notion of eldership, and so they began to clamor for reform and change. They wanted to assume positions of authority, and to close the skete. Because of their complaints, Father Barsanuphius was removed from Optina and assigned as igumen of the Golutvinsky Monastery. When he arrived to take up his duties, Father Barsanuphius found the monastery in a state of physical and spiritual decline. Nevertheless, he did not lose heart, and soon the monastery began to revive. More people began to visit, once they heard that an Optina Elder had come to Goluvinsky, and the monastery’s financial position also began to improve. However, the rebellious brethren caused him great sorrow, and he had to expel some of them

At the beginning of 1913, Saint Barsanuphius became ill again and asked Metropolitan Macarius of Moscow for permission to retire to Optina, but that was not to be. He fell asleep in the Lord on April 1, and his body remained in the church of Golotvino until April 6 (which was also Lazarus Saturday). After the funeral, his body was placed on a train and sent to Optina for burial. The train arrived at Kozelsk Station on April 8, and the coffin was carried to Optina by clergy.

The Moscow Patriarchate authorized local veneration of the Optina Elders on June 13, 1996. The work of uncovering the relics of Saints Leonid, Macarius, Hilarion, Ambrose, Anatole I, Barsanuphius and Anatole II began on June 24/July 7, 1998 and was concluded the next day. However, because of the church Feasts (Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, etc.) associated with the actual dates of the uncovering of the relics, Patriarch Alexey II designated June 27/July 10 as the date for commemorating this event. The relics of the holy Elders now rest in the new church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.

The Optina Elders were glorified by the Moscow Patriarchate for universal veneration on August 7, 2000.

VENERABLE GERONTIUS, YOUTH, CANONARCH OF THE KIEV CAVE (14th.c.)

Saint Gerontius lived during the fourteenth century. He was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery and fulfilled the obedience of canonarch (leader of church singing). He spent all his life at the monastery, in ascetic deeds of abstinence, obedience, and prayer.

Saint Gerontius was buried in the Far Caves. His memory is celebrated also together with the Synaxis of the Saints of the Far Caves, on August 28.

Jahana Hayes (née Flemming: born March 8, 1973)[is an educator and politician serving as the Representative for Connecticut’s 5th congressional district since 2019. The district comprises much of the state’s northwestern portion, including New Britain, Danbury, and Waterbury. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first African American woman and African American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. She was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year in 2016.

She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and grew up in public housing projects in that city. She earned an AA at Naugatuck Valley Community College and a BA at Southern Connecticut State University. She earned an MA in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Saint Joseph. She earned her Sixth-Year Certificate from the University of Bridgeport School of Education.

Her first job was at the Southbury Training School in Connecticut. She went on to teach government and history at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury. She chaired the Kennedy SOAR Review Board, a “school within a school” that provided advanced instruction for gifted students, and was a co-adviser of HOPE, a student-service club at Kennedy.

This award won her widespread media attention. “I really think that we need to change the narrative, change the dialogue about what teaching is as a profession,” She told The Washington Post. “We’ve spent a lot of time in the last few years talking about the things that are not working. We really need to shift our attention to all the things that are working.” Appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, Hayes said she taught her students “kindness” and “community service.” After receiving the award, she addressed the annual meeting of the National Education Association. “I am so grateful to be a member of the NEA,” she said, praising it for preventing the “altruistic character trait that all teachers possess” from being exploited.
