Anyway, I decided that it’s a Bit Funny that in 2008 Felicia Day played Penny, a nerdy redhead who… basically just kinda died purely for the sake of being the tragic origin story of an incely-but-sympathetic villain…

And then nine years later she took over the role of Betty Grof, a nerdy redhead who started out as just a woman who died (implicitly in the off-screen nuclear war) purely for the sake of being the tragic origin story of an incely-but-sympathetic villain but then was brought back into the narrative so she could be a character in her own right with actual agency in the story and her character arc is even kind of a deconstruction of what it’s like existing purely for the sake of someone else's character. 

They even have kinda similar names, don’t they? Kind of an [X]e[Y][Y]y naming scheme.

Doctor Horrible is an interesting case of how cultural values can shift even over a short period of time.

In 2008 we see an intelligent and shy nice guy vs a shallow bullying jock.

In 2022 we see a gun-toting incel vs a himbo engaged in direct action.

Anyways I know literally no one was asking this question but if Dr. Horrible were to ever watch ‘Megamind’, it’ll just get under his skin in such a visceral way. He’ll be so pissed off at it. Like, it’s got the brilliant, sympathetic Supervillain Protagonist who was bullied all of his life by the full-of-himself superhero and then… he has NO plan to improve the city once he takes it over? No ethos outside of the aesthetic? The superhero is played sympathetically?? The supervillain learns the error of his ways and becomes a superhero? This isn’t just an affront to how Dr. Horrible views supervillainy, but to his whole sense of identity.

For him, with his whole view of what supervillainy is and how the world works, this is like some Insidious Corporate Propaganda that exists for the sole purpose of watering down supervillainy, and the kind of resentment and frustrations at society that brought him into supervillainy, into something mainstream-y and placating that does nothing but uphold the status quo. 

And he would make a scathing review of it for his Blog, and he’ll try and play it, like, mocking and condescending and above-it-all. Like, this is just dumb slope for the masses, brainwashing junk food for babies - obviously he doesn’t really care about something so stupid. But, like, you can totally tell that it has touched a nerve. 

He would, however, have No Thoughts about Hal Stewart. Like, Hal’s storyline wouldn’t make him reconsider the way he thinks about Penny, and it wouldn’t make him feel insulted or defensive. He would mention Hal’s existence at, like, one line of his review and then go back into complaining how bullshit it is that Metro Man didn’t stay dead. Billy just doesn’t have the self-awareness to even notice any of the possible parallels between himself and Hal.

On My Latest Media Obsession

doctor horrible is endlessly bitter about the state of society, but when it comes to changing the world, his modus operandi is too vague- he’s kind of immature in that way- he’ll rule the world, but then what?

penny is kind of the only real thing he has, but she died as a result of his own schemes. in the end, his victory is a twisted, hollow one.

now penny- penny does take real steps to try and make a difference, and he scoffs at her for it- “signatures?” “you’re treating a symptom and the disease rages on.” but at least she was doing something.

but the thing is, he was kind of right. penny didn’t really make much difference on her own. bless her, she tried, but it wasn’t her. it was captain hammer. for all the wrong fuckin reasons, yeah, but ultimately it was him who put things in motion because he held the position of power.

now doc H holds the position of power, but since he had to sacrifice his principles to do so, he’s become no less of a corporate tool than his arch-nemesis, the hammer himself. HENCE:

he dons the BLACK GLOVES of ASSHOLERY (god i love the language of cinema)

it’s not just depressing because the characters are left miserable by the end, it’s depressing because the story is telling us that nothing will ever get better.
