Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: Honorable Mentions - Broker (dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda)

If you've seen Hirokazu Kore-eda's 2018 film Shoplifters, the themes of found family and unconventional relationships explored in Broker won't be anything new. What Broker does boast, however, is a story that, in its own way separate from Shoplifters, is profoundly beautiful. The characters and overarching trajectory of the plot in Broker is slightly more straightforward in its positive message and uplifting spirit than Shoplifters was, and, of course, it's yet another great acting showcase for Korean powerhouse Song Kang-ho. It's also an incredible acting showcase for K-pop star Lee Ji-eun, who is probably better known by her stage name IU. I hope Broker is a launchpad to seeing her in more stuff, because she is wildly impressive in this.

Synopsis

This KDrama was aired on October 15 of 2022, going for 16 episodes.This drama is set on a fictional Joseon dynasty, with a strong queen who would give up all protocols as she struggles to make her trouble making sons into princes.

Opinion

This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

Korean Air beats Samsung Fire for fifth straight win, jumps to No. 5 in road construction

Korean Air's Han Jung-yong, Lim Dong-hyuk combine for 26 points Korea Express wins 29 points in Burkina Faso

Korean Air extends its winning streak to five games with a sweep of Samsung Fire.

Korean Air swept Samsung Fire 3-0 (25-20 25-19 25-22) in the men's Dodram 2023-2024 V-League at Gyeyang Gymnasium in Incheon on Friday.

Riding a five-game winning streak, Korean Air (6-2, 19 points) pulled within striking distance of first-place Woori Card (7-1, 20 points).

Jeong Jung-yong (14 points) and Lim Dong-hyuk (12 points) led the way. Jung added three blocking points and one service ace. Lim Dong-hyuk had a very high attacking success rate of 60%.

Korean Air's team attack percentage was also high at 57.57%. The defense was also solid from the first set.

Despite losing their second straight match, Samsung Fire (5-3, 14 points) remained in third place.

Samsung Fire's foreign player Yosubani scored 14 points but had an offensive success rate in the low 30s. She also had 12 turnovers.

Korean Air dominated from the start of the game. Led by Jeong Jung-yong, Korean Air scored three straight points with a back-attack by Kwak Seung-seok and a block by Kim Kyu-min to take a 7-4 lead.

Korean Air then took the lead for good at 18-16 with back-to-back kills from Jung Jeong-yong before taking advantage of a Yosubani service error at 24-20 to take the first set.

Samsung Fire lost the first set helplessly due to Jupo Yosubani's poor play.

The second set followed a similar pattern. At 3-2, Cho Jae-young's fastball and Kwak Seung-seok's block made the difference. Korean Air extended its lead with a variety of attacks and widened the gap at 18-13 with a quick opener from Lincoln.

Korean Air pulled away from Samsung Fire late in the second set with kills from Lim Dong-hyuk, Lincoln, and Jung Jeong-yong.

With the victory in hand, Korean Air took the lead early in the third set with a quick offense that included fastballs and quick opens. They went on an 8-3 run and raised their opponents' spirits.

Samsung Fire fought back and tied the score at 14-14 with Yosubani's serve and attack.

Korean Air, however, capitalized on Yosubani's back-to-back errors to widen the gap to 17-14. At 24-22, Korean Air ended the match with another service error.

Samsung Fire self-destructed with 26 errors, 10 more than Korean Air.

Meanwhile, Korean Air surpassed 32,000 set wins for the first time in its history.

The women's team won 3-1 (25-23 25-22 18-25 26-24) against Pepper Savings Bank at the Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium.

Foreign player Vukiric led the way with 29 points, while Tanacha and Jeon Sae-yan contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for DOT (2W-6D-9P), which moved up to fifth place, pushing IBK (3W-5D-8P) to sixth, and also avenged a first-round loss to Pepper Savings Bank.

Trailing 23-24 in the fourth set, the road construction company made a deuce with a timed attack by Bae Yuna, then ended the match with a service ace by Jeon Sae-yan and an open attack by Tanacha.

Pepper Savings Bank (2-6, 5-5) remained at the bottom of the standings.

Broker (2022, dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda) - review by Rookie-Critic

Broker is an absolutely beautiful film that touches on both the failings of the adoption system in South Korea (which seem relatively close to how they work here in the States, as well, but I'm not an expert so don't quote me on that) and, much like Kore-eda's previous film Shoplifters, the benefits of found family. Kore-eda is seen deeply set in his comfort zone here, and it's a little hard not to hear the synopsis or watch the trailer and think, "So it's Shoplifters, just this time with Song Kang-ho." After having seen the film, I can say that there are parts of me that still feels that way about it, but Broker has a lot going for it on its own merit to call it its own original, distinctive film. For one, and I wasn't sure this was possible, Broker almost seems even more sentimental than Shoplifters was, which is a pretty tall order all on its own. However, the movie never allows that sentimentality to tip the scales towards sappiness; leaving some of the more cynical characters to drag things back into balance. The acting is also great across the board. It's no surprise to anyone at this point that, if Song Kang-ho is in something, he's brilliant in said thing. That man is an acting force to be reckoned with, and I think one of the film's biggest strengths is that, in spite of this fact, the ensemble doesn't suffer. They all rise up to meet Song's level. I'd specifically like to give props to Lee Ji-eun (who is traditionally a singer, probably better known by her stage name, IU), who gives an outstanding breakout performance to the point where, for most of the movie, your attention is focused on her and not Song. I know that it's kind of just a part of the K-pop idol trajectory to eventually start acting, but that doesn't always mean that the idol in question is successful, or very likely even good at it. However, IU is without a doubt amazingly talented, and gives a performance that is both understated when it needs to be and big when the moment calls for it. Really, everyone just blends so well together and it sells the found family message super well.

If I had a complaint about Broker, and I do, it's that Kore-eda has already made a brilliant movie about found family and the failings of the system, the previously mentioned Shoplifters, and, in this reviewer's opinion, that film is overall better than this one. I found that I never connected with this group of characters in the same deep-rooted way that I did with the family from Shoplifters, and while that movie may have had a slightly less altruistically "happy" ending, it felt maybe just a bit more impactful. That being said, I can't knock Broker hardly at all for that, as there are probably a lot of people whose first of these two films will most likely be this one, due to both Song Kang-ho and IU's presence in it, and I think that Broker is great enough on its own to (mostly) stand up to the comparison, and will likely have fans that do make just as much of a connection, if not more of one, to this group.

In his "vengeance trilogy," Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy (2003), and Lady Vengeance (2005), Park Chan-wook has given us not only, as some have suggested, an updated version of the Elizabethan and Jacobean revenge tragedies like Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, and Webster's The Duchess of Malfi, but also a vision of hell, especially if you adhere to Sartre's idea  that hell is other people. Park has a way of populating his stories with nightmare figures that play no essential role in the plot, like the dudes in the next room who masturbate to the sound of Ryu's (Ha-kyun Shin) sister (Ji-eun Lim) groaning in pain (which Ryu himself, being a deaf-mute, cannot hear), or the mysterious mentally and physically afflicted man who appears as Ryu is trying to cover his sister's body with stones and persists in trying to remove them until he's driven away, meanwhile distracting Ryu from the drowning Yu-sun (Bo-bae Han). There's also the fired employee who stops Dong-jin Park's ( Hang-ko Song) car and proceeds with a failed attempt at seppuku, heightening Dong-jin's feelings of guilt, perhaps, but not providing an essential element in the narrative. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is, I think, the least successful of the three films: It doesn't succeed in transcending the revenge motif the way Oldboy does with its echoes of Dostoevsky and Kafka, and it doesn't have the technical finesse of Lady Vengeance. Its chief virtue is, especially in comparison with Lady Vengeance, the relative straightforwardness of its narrative, with the added ambiguity of its title: Is Ryu or Dong-jin "Mr. Vengeance"? In fact, the film is less about vengeance than about guilt: Ryu's sister commits suicide because she feels guilty for the kidnapping of Yu-sun, and passes along the burden of guilt to her brother when Yu-sun dies, while Dong-jin is filled with remorse over the consequences of his business failure. Park Chan-wook's characters exist in a world where there's no escape from guilt and no hope for redemption. Hell is empty and all the devils are here.

Jiyong was gently burping his daughter, in the living room. His partners had left to work and he was feeling alone in their big house. He was reminiscing the day they were paired together for the government funded Femme project, meeting each other was kind of awkward but fun.

"Everyone was so much younger then and his elegant Seung-hyun was chubbier back then and he remembered how shaggy everyone’s hair had been. Your daddies were weird looking when they were young, we were grouped in high school. So daddy Tae had skinny arms" she decided this was an important moment to spit up all over his clean shirt. "Misuk baby no this is a pammy's good shirt" he sighed consoling his daughter and removing his soiled shirt, "your tired baby I know?"

He decided to lay back and let her sleep on his chest, it was her favorite place to sleep because of his heart beat, warmth and scent. He remembered the day the group had decided their feeling for one another and didn’t want anyone else to interfere. Closing his eyes he rested but didn't sleep, too worried about his daughter rolling off his chest. The familiar beeps of the door pin pad were heard throughout the open plan entrance to their apartment, not wanting to break his relaxing time he didn’t open his eyes. A pair of thin warm lips pressed gently against his.

He knew each of his partners by all his senses, so he could easily identify the owner of these lips. Seung-hyun was an actor and the one in the house with the most authority, everyone affectionate called him TOP or daddy TOP. When he felt his daughter being moved his eyes flashed open to see Seung-hyun carrying her to her to her crib.

Jiyong sat up and ran his hand over his face and tidied his hair. Seung-hyun hummed back down the hallway and smiled at his lover, a sparkle in his dark eyes. "How was work?" Jiyong grabbed his hand and pulled him over to the couch and began snuggling into the larger man’s chest.

"Really good we are working with a music producer named Suga he is apparently a genius. I got a photo shoot for the movie posters booked for two weeks from now. I have been told it will be me shirtless so I have to make sure I look good for that. Meaning I will join Dae and Tae at the gym, this week. How was Misuk?"

Taeyang stepped through the door in his hoody and sweats, freshly showered after a day of training "Ji, you should have seen me today, I won the game, couch was so proud" "That's amazing?" Jiyong smiled boosting his confidence. As Taeyang’s strong arms embraced him swaying the two side to side. Daesung and Seungri came home and were talking about work to each other they both worked at the stadium. They took turns greeting their lover and giving him a passionate kiss.

They all had a good afternoon sorting out the chores and starting dinner when, Misuk was crying through the baby monitor. Taeyang and Daesung took over baby duty, one bouncing her gently the other making a bottle. "Hey, it is okay, daddy Tae is here. You like daddy Tae right?"

"You say no we prefer daddy sung" Dae sung grinned shaking the bottle, and testing it against the inside of his wrist. Seungri continued making dinner and was smiling at their antics. Jiyong scoffed at the two turned on the couch to face the pair in the dining area. They were bickering about how Misuk, liked to lay when having bottles.

"No you love pammy don't you, your pammy is our favorite" Jiyong teased his boys and Seung-hyun’s hand affectionately slapped his but making him turn and sit properly in his seat. They all sat with Misuk who was currently drinking milk and waited for the grill timer to tell them when the fish was done so Seungri could serve. Turning on their television they saw an advertisement for a trending online video, clicking it a really cool opening theme played with a sweet dance. "Hey that's our personal trainer JK" Daesung pointed at the television and Taeyang looked up and nodded “hey looks cute, he seems to be wearing some makeup, it really suits him” "That is the music producer I was telling you about” Seung-hyun said patting Jiyong’s knee “what are the odds they live in the same group"

"Their femme is really cute" Jiyong smiled softly. She had a more exotic frame than they were used to her face was small and her eyes were huge and almost doll like. Jiyong felt a need to dress her, he had ideas swarming his thoughts. Going quiet he started planning a whole make over for y/n and all of her boys.

"Not as cute as you" Seungri leaned over the couch to hand his lover a glass of his favorite drink. They watched the two videos of the Femme group call BTS and was disappointed when there was no more. It was interesting and very well made the editing the theme song the dance moves the dynamic.

Jiyong sighed scrolling through the BTS World social media photos. He saw photo’s of all the presents they had gifted her, them all watching a movie together, making their lunches with heart shaped decorations. There was a picture labelled Flour Fairy and it was a powdered Jimin, if he remembered his name correctly. He stopped on a picture of a very attractive young man, he read the description and smiled "Taehyung, the deep voiced one is really handsome"

"More handsome then us" Seung-hyun said challenging Jiyong his hand landing firmly on Jiyong's thigh. He squeezed Jiyong’s thigh and they all had turned to their lover with dark eyes. He lowered his face and made the excuse that he had to put Misuk to bed, heading to his daughter nestled in Daesung’s arms. Daesung carried the baby to the room and tucked her in with a little kiss. Before joining the others each taking their time to show Jiyong how much they loved him and pampered him until they all fell asleep.

A kumiho (gumiho) (Korean: 구미호; Hanja: 九尾狐, literally "nine-tailed fox") is a creature that appears in the folktales and legends of Korea. Korean kumiho shares many similarities to the Chinese "Huli jing" and the Japanese "kitsune". It can freely transform, among other things, into a beautiful woman often set out to seduce boys, and eat their liver or heart . Sometimes it can also turn into men and seduce women and getting them pregnant.(depending on the legend).
