Are you curious about the future? Do you wonder how artificial intelligence (AI) will impact web design? Or if you’ll ever get that elusive Bluesky invite? You’ve come to the right place, my friends.

It’s time for my annual look at the year ahead. This satirical report is chock-full of useless facts and mindless predictions. That makes it just as good as any year-ahead article on the internet.

How do I do it? Like most internet companies, I use a proprietary algorithm. I prefer to keep it a secret. But it involves looking at the past and employing an overactive imagination. It can be yours for a small fee, by the way.

So, what does 2024 have in store for us? Here are some things that absolutely will (or probably won’t) happen.

2023 was an eventful year for WordPress – and not all of it was positive. Then again, a little #WPDrama is a fine spectator sport.

The divide between co-founder Matt Mullenweg’s commercial venture (Automattic) and the open-source project once again raised some eyebrows. The (supposed) problem? Automattic’s WordPress.com replicated plugin listings from the WordPress.org repository on its site.

Plugin developers expressed concern that the commercial site’s listings showed up first in search results. Mullenweg was personally called out regarding the issue. The criticism was harsh and accusatory.

He responded aggressively – even banning a member of the open-source project’s marketing team on Twitter/X.

Right or wrong, these events got the WordPress community talking. The level of discourse was palpable.

It also got my predictive senses tingling. There must be a way to capitalize on this phenomenon – right?

Mullenweg responded to many critics – but certainly not all. Were you left out? Don’t worry! You’ll have a chance to get in on the action.

Apple Will Thrill Fans with AI

Rumors abound that Apple is working on an artificial intelligence platform. How might it work? What are its capabilities? I have a few predictions.

A Stiff Barrier to Entry

Apple loves to sell us premium products. And they also enjoy exercising tight control of them. Don’t expect their AI offering to be any different.

Thus, their platform will only be available to those using Apple devices. But that’s not all. Adding Apple’s AI to your workflow will also require a proprietary cable. No, not the one you already have.

We’re talking about a completely new connector type. The good news is that it’s currently hidden on your device. It will reveal itself upon sensing the cable’s presence.

The bad news? The dongle costs $500. And customers will have to wait at least six months for delivery. As usual, a large number of preorders will be the culprit.

An AI Powered Website Testing Suite

Web designers will be thrilled to see Apple’s AI testing suite. Enter your URL and watch the magic happen.

The tool emulates multiple devices. For example, you can troubleshoot your client’s buggy site on their 8-year-old Android phone. Or figure out why your responsive styles aren’t working on a brand of tablet no one has heard of.

You can also test your sites on classic Apple devices. How would an Apple IIe render your home page? What about a Newton handheld? You’re a dongle away from finding out.

It Will Be a Roller-Coaster Year for Elon Musk

Perhaps you don’t need a crystal ball to predict some things. Elon Musk and chaos are the perfect couple (sorry, Grimes). It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

I believe Mr. Musk will have a busy year. Seriously, there will be something wild happening every day. Here are just a few examples:

Musk will reveal (unprompted) that he ingested dozens of “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” cartridges. You know, the ones that Atari buried back in the 1980s. He may still have a stash in his basement.

Musk will invent an implantable microchip that allows chickens to speak. Ironically, he’ll call it “Twitter“.

What about the service formerly known as Twitter? Musk hasn’t forgotten about it. He’ll continue to reinstate banned accounts. Next up: Napolean. Watch out for a rant hundreds of years in the making.

We hear the Tesla Cybertruck will finally start deliveries in 2024. What’s the catch? It only includes models that come equipped with a Musk-approved flamethrower.

Tesla’s Autopilot feature is having issues. Musk will replace it with an “Autonag” option. A virtual Elon will criticize your driving skills and shout them through the car’s audio system. Transport will never be the same.

Yes, the predictions above are silly. But they underscore that we’re in a time of change. AI is disrupting our industry. The tools we use are evolving. Somehow, we’ll need to adapt. For instance, I may have ChatGPT write this article for me next year.

None of this will be easy. Web designers have weathered plenty of shifts, though. I’m still here – and so are you!

So, take a deep breath. Find something to laugh about. And do your best to make 2024 a great year.

Riddle

I've been asked if I've seen Ted-Ed's riddles, and I have! They actually inspired this blog. The riddle for today contains a couple of references to a few of their own riddles, so see if you can spot them. :P I've also chosen to emulate their style of narration this time, mostly for the heck of it.

As usual, if you want to try the riddle for yourself, the clues and options available in each category are listed down below, after the scenario, with the step-by-step solution under the Read More.

The newest game in your favorite series, The Fable of Hilda: Dongle's Difficult Dilemma, has just been released, but just as you enter the store to get your copy, you learn that someone has just taken the last one on the shelves. The cashier pities you and offers to allow you to purchase one of the copies they have in storage reserved for the rest of the week, but only if you can solve his riddle. He tells you that there were five customers present besides you today, and each of them bought a different game, paid in a different way, wore a different color, had a different snack on them, and had a different discount on their purchase. He gives you a list of clues you need to use to figure out who had what, along with the available options for each category.

"If you can figure out who bought which game, then I'll let you through," he says, before leaving you to your own devices.

Can you figure out who had what? You might want to get a pen and paper, if you want to try this yourself.

Solution:

Those of you who've seen me talk about the Einstein Riddle in a previous post might recognize what we're looking at to be a Zebra Puzzle. For those who don't know, a Zebra Puzzle is a type of logic puzzle where you must use clues in order to place assign the right attributes to the right column.

So, let's begin by making a table that has each of the categories given to us as the rows, and each customer as the columns.

To start, we can place the options given to us by clues 2 (The first customer had a 15% discount) and 6 (The first customer bought Hyper Luciana Sisters Awe), who respectively give the discount (15%) and game (HLSA) for the first customer.

From there, we can place the 25% discount as the fifth customer's, as clue 12 (The 25% discount was either the first or last one used) said it was at one of the ends, and one end is already taken. This also gives us WFBS, thanks to clue 3 (Wicked Fighter Buddies was bought with a 25% discount).

Next is clue 9 (Nalvi and the Bygone World was bought immediately before Wicked Fighter Buddies Supreme) placing NatBW in the 4th column, which in turn answers clue 5 (The customer who paid with a Mobile App is right before the one who bought Nalvi and the Bygone World).

There are only two games left, and we can get the position of both of them from clue 7 (Diskymon Mythos: Arcsauce was bought somewhere before Sobs of the City).

It's here where we run into a problem, however. None of the clues that remain (1, 4, 8, 10, & 11) give us enough information to deduce their placements, and not all of the options are even listed within a clue. It seems like we have nowhere left to go. Did the cashier just decide to give us a rigged puzzle that's impossible to conclusively answer?

As a matter of fact, there's a surprisingly simple solution to this conundrum. You think back to what the cashier told you, and that's when you realize something.

The cashier's words were "If you can figure out who bought which game, then I'll let you through." He didn't say you had to figure out where everything went, he only wants to know where each game was, and the only category that you could fully complete is the only one you need.

You return to the cashier, telling him what you've found.

He chuckles. "I guess I couldn't trick you, it seems. Alright, I'll let you through. Just remember, you still have to pay for it."

You leave the store with the game you were looking for, having solved your own Difficult Dilemma in the process.

Rabbit hole I've just fallen down: it's almost impossible to play Metal Gear Solid and some other classic games properly on PC because of the lack of pressure-sensitive button support. Kodi is the superior player at this point, and I think I finally have it set up properly using a plugin to map my Plex server as native kodi videos. NVidia should really just be specific instead of vague in the FAQ, and list the devices that work by name, like the FLIRC. I signed up for Plex pass to try the latest player, but it constantly has issues.

What has everyone's experience been like on the Shield TV with Flirc I hope the Inter-Key Delays are lower which means no double clicks. When I press a button, a lot of the time, Flirc interprets it as a double press which can get very annoying. While I do use the app on the Shield, the shortcuts I mentioned are actually programmed for my HD-300's. KodiShield 7y I am using Flirc on my Ouya at the moment and I've been having a few problems. I realized after rereading this that people are asking about using SageTV from within the Shield device.
