When you check out a Kindle format e-book, it will prompt you to send it to your Kindle or Kindle eReader app, rather than downloading the book to Libby. You can let Libby know that you read e-books on your Kindle by tapping on the menu, and choose "I Read on Another Device" in Download Settings. Give it a try! The Libby app is a different browsing experience than the OverDrive app, and you may prefer it. Should I use the Libby app to discover books? You can adjust these settings by opening the menu and tapping on Download Settings. To download audiobooks, which are much bigger files, you’ll need to tell Libby to start downloading. By default, all digital books under 20 mb (basically e-books only) will download to Libby automatically for offline reading. Unless you tell it otherwise (see the Kindle FAQ below), Libby downloads digital books in the Read or Listen formats.

What format are the digital books in Libby? If you want the kids in your life to be able to browse only for kids’ books, and not see other titles, you’ll want to stay with the OverDrive app as well. If you’re concerned about excluding mature content in your digital reading app, stick with the OverDrive app. Also, if you make use of accessibility features in the OverDrive app, you’ll need to stick with that until more accessibility features get added to Libby. If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app for now. If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. Libby is new, and doesn’t yet have all of the features that the OverDrive app does, such as the ability to recommend titles for purchase or robust accessibility features. It also allows for transfer to MP3 players from computers. OverDrive is the “classic” app, and is compatible with more devices, including Kindle Fire, Macs, PCs, and Windows mobile devices. Libby is great if you just want to download a book to your Android or iOS phone or tablet. Libby is compatible with Android and iOS devices, and OverDrive is working on and app for Kindle Fire/HD devices. Libby is a fast and attractive digital browsing experience. It has the same collection of titles as the OverDrive app - it’s just a different way to access the same digital library collection. Libby is a new app released by OverDrive.

my day as an anon has come... kindle advice

ok the paperwhite is 100% worth the extra money in my opinion. i have the signature edition which has warmth settings and dark mode (i don't believe the base edition has one of those or both) which is 100% worth the extra $40 from the base edition of the paperwhite for me because i love the warmth setting and dark mode at night is the best. it also will autoadjust the light settings depending on your environment and it has an extra 16gb of storage - though i swear you will likely never hit your limit of storage

in terms of buying ads or no ads, I'm iffy on it. if you can get the bundle that's no ads + a few free months of kindle unlimited, that's a great way to test if kindle unlimited is something you'd want to try too but otherwise, you can email amazon after getting your kindle and ask for ads to be removed for free (a lot of people just say they have children at home and keep getting inappropriate ads and they will usually take the ads away for free then)

my favorite accessory purchase for it is easily a pop socket. with it, it's just so much easier to hold and i find I'm so much more confident to take it around places (the new york subway and Disneyland included) without the worry of dropping it. i put one on a clear case and then fill the back with fun stickers.

you can connect it to your local library card and use the libby app to get library books on it which is really great. they recently started updating a new rewards system so that for every 300 points you get from buying books, you get a $3 off coupon and they do a zillion double and triple points days so i usually save a list of what books i wanna buy and wait for those days to get the extra points and coupons. there are also a bunch of what are called "stuff your kindle" days where a fuck ton of books become free and you can buy whatever for no money

that's probably way more information than you'd ever need but it is truly my favorite thing in the world and i highly vouch for the purchase of one

I love my kindle, but I only use it for fanfics lol. I have some digital books, but I like my physical ones. I dont think its wasteful cause it's something that gets used and loved for years and years. But then again I only buy books I know I already like the author of/have read from the library before.

But now to rave about the kindle paper white:

If you use the libby app you can put your library e-books on the kindle to read until you have to return it.

Like I said, you can download fanfics as .mobi files from ao3 and email them as docs right to your kindle.

The kindle store menu on the kindle is pretty nice.

I love how the back light works, it's really nice on the eyes if your reading in the shade/at night.

The newest kindle paperwhite is water proof, if you want to read by the pool, or if you just read really sad books and cry on it.

I think it's a nice weight. I don't think if you dropped it on your face while reading laying down it would leave a bruise.

The green is the prettiest green I have ever seen. (I have the green one lol). But all the colored ones are very pretty.

My one complaint is that if you read all day the battery does drain, and my old old kindle (from when I was 11 and I'm currently 23) that I replaced this year with the paper white, had a better battery, but my old one didn't have the back light or a touch screen.

All in all I love my kindle and recommend them.

March 2021 Reading Recap

1. This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger, adventure fiction. This was my book club's read for March and I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and our discussion. An unforgettable story of four orphans who travel the Mississippi River on a life-changing odyssey during the Great Depression. Hang in there through the heaviness of the beginning because you will be rewarded with endearing characters, beautiful writing and an unforgettable adventure.

2. The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, suspense fiction. Listened to this one on my Hoopla app from my public library. A modern Jane Eyre remake that takes place in present day Birmingham, Alabama. If you like a quick, page turning, suspenseful book then this one is for you.

3. The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez, romance fiction. This read came from my library's Libby app. I downloaded and read on my Kindle Paperwhite. (So thankful for this technology as my public library still hasn't fully opened.) Okay, now lets talk book- I actually didn't realize this was a second in a series until I finished. It really didn't seem to matter that I hadn't read the first book. I'm a sucker for cute dogs and music so I guess that's why I picked it up. If you like rom- com movies, then you should enjoy this book.

4. The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, mystery/historical fiction. Listened to this one on my Hoopla app from my local library. Kind of wish I read this in print form because I think I would have been more attentive to the details. This dual timeline story takes place in 1790s and present day London, centering around a mysterious hidden apothecary shop and its effect on the lives of two troubled women.

5. Better Luck Next Time by Julia Claiborne Johnson, humorous/historical fiction. This novel is set on a divorce ranch in Reno, Nevada in the 1930's as told by one of the ranch hands. Memorable quirky characters, clever dialogue, romance, and a surprise ending make this a truly pleasurable read.

Hoopla Digital can be downloaded onto your phone, iPad, or accessed through your computer. It provides a variety of books, audiobooks, movies, music, and TV shows. All card holders can check out 6 Hoopla items per calendar month.

OverDrive can also be downloaded to your phone or iPad. Overdrive has books and audiobooks and works with Kindle devices, including Kindle Paperwhites! We are part of an Overdrive group, SOVALUe to provide more content. Patrons can check out 5 items at one time. Once you return an item you can check out another. Overdrive's sister app is called Libby, you can use either.

RBdigital is another option for accessing books and audiobooks, but also includes current magazines. View the latest Cosmopolitan or Rachel Ray editions digitally!
