How clogged floor drains become free again

You may forget about the floor drains in your home until a problem arises. When clogged, floor drains can overflow with smelly water. If you can't determine the cause of the clog, such as an object dropped down the drain, you can use a drain auger or pipe snake to unclog the drain. Wear work clothes and hand and eye protection when unclogging drains because the work can get dirty.

Mop up excess water if it has accumulated around the drain. Wring out the mop into the bucket. Continue until you can easily reach the drain cover.

Put on rubber gloves and remove the drain cover; set it aside. Shine a flashlight into the hole to look for visible obstructions, such as a toy or a clump of organic material. Remove anything you can reach by hand with your gloves or a straight coat hanger. Put the materials from the drain into the bucket. If you don't see a clog, put a straight coat hanger in the hole and feel around for items. Move the hanger back and forth a little to pull out or at least loosen any possible clogs. Put the materials removed from the drain into the bucket.

Place a plunger over the drain opening so that the entire opening is covered. Keep pressing the plunger to loosen clogs. Pour a little water down the drain to see if the clog is cleared. If the water level does not drop, as it would if the drain were clear, continue to push the plunger in until it does. If the plunger does not clear the clog, a drain auger is required.

Twist the drain auger off a bit by cranking the handle out of the housing to get a feel for how it works and which direction pulls the line up and which direction drains more water. Uncoil part of the auger into the drain until you encounter an obstruction. Rewind part of the auger and then unwind it again in the same area until the obstruction is removed. If the obstruction appears to be solid, move the auger a little to reach the sides of the drain and work it up and down, unwinding and rewinding sections repeatedly. While rewinding with the auger, remove any stuck debris and place it in the bucket with your gloved hands.

Continue working with the auger in the drain, trying to clean the entire drain area by moving the auger slightly left and right as you unwind and rewind. Pour in a little water from time to time to see if the clog has cleared. Continue working with the auger until the clog is cleared. If you cannot remove the clog yourself, you may need to call a plumber.
