Hayduke Day 12: The Hayduke has been more mentally taxing than trails I've hiked in the past. Lack of up-to-date information and quickly changing conditions mean that the route may be dangerous or even impassible. Dark Canyon is one of the first of these question marks. If the water in the canyon is too high and the river isnt safe to cross, I'll have to turn around and hike back to Canyonlands. The alternate, via Canyonlands Maze District, is one that's highly recommend and that I hope to come back to do one day - not one I would like to be forced into doing as part of the Hayduke. There typically aren't many options for alternate routes when you're deep in a canyon and turning around is often the only option. But before discovering my fate in Dark Canyon, I need to navigate down Youngs Canyon. I encounter some navigational difficulties as the route down/around dryfalls is sometimes steep and exposed. There's still enough snow lingering to make things an extra level of frustrating. One of the tenets of Hayduke hiking rings especially true here as I avoid jumping or climbing down anything I can't get myself back up. The confluence of Youngs and Dark Canyon is overgrown and as I bushwhack to my first river crossing, the silty water makes it impossible to know the eater's depth. Fortunately, it's only shin deep and as I start up Dark Canyon, I silently hope the water doesn't get much deeper. Water levels can fluctuate drastically within a day - or even a few hours - and I don't want to linger in Dark Canyon longer than necessary. After being told by a hiker near the confluence that I would never make it out Dark Canyon, I resolve to do just this. After a long hike up the canyon and countless river crossings, I make it to the base of the Sundance Trail. The climb up to the road above goes by quickly as the sun dips behind the canyon walls. By the time I've made camp it's getting dark, and I'm glad to have the aptly named canyon behind me. Day: Dark Canyon Plateau to Sundance Trailhead Distance:聽20.79 mi / 33.45 km Elevation gain:聽3,097 ft / 944 m #hayduketrail #utahbackpacking

Surface Preparation & Painting of Steel Sided Commercial & Industrial Buildings! When it comes to painting a corrugated metal steel sided commercial or industrial building, proper surface preparation is key to ensuring a long-lasting finish. This is especially important in the harsh climate of the Chicago area, where extreme temperatures and weather conditions can take a toll on building exteriors. In this blog post, we will discuss the proper way to surface prep and paint a corrugated metal steel sided building using a DTM or direct to metal industrial enamel. Step 1: Clean the Surface The first step in surface preparation is to clean the surface thoroughly. This involves removing any dirt, debris, or rust that may be present on the surface. For best results, use a pressure washer to remove any loose dirt or debris. If there is rust on the surface, it must be removed before painting. Use a wire brush or a grinder to remove any rust from the surface. Step 2: Sand the Surface After cleaning the surface, the next step is to sand the surface to remove any remaining rust and to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Use a coarse sandpaper or a wire brush to sand the surface. Be sure to wear a respirator and safety glasses while sanding. Step 3: Prime the Surface Once the surface is clean and smooth, it鈥檚 time to prime the surface. A direct-to-metal (DTM) primer is recommended for this step if the steel is bare or is in a deteriorated condition. The primer will provide a strong adhesion base for the paint to adhere to and will help to prevent rust from forming on the surface. Step 4: Paint the Surface After the primer has dried, (assuming you are not using a primer and finish in one type of product),it鈥檚 time to paint the surface. A direct-to-metal (DTM) industrial enamel is recommended for this step. This type of paint is specifically formulated to adhere to metal surfaces and to withstand harsh weather conditions. When painting the surface, be sure to use a high-quality paintbrush or roller to ensure a smooth and even finish. Apply the paint in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. On large areas use a sprayer, if able. Some DTM's can even be purchased with dryfall/dryfog properties. Step 5: Inspect the Surface After the final coat of paint has dried, inspect the surface to ensure that the finish is smooth and even. If any touch-up work is required, be sure to do so before the paint has fully cured. In conclusion, surface preparation is key when painting a corrugated metal steel sided commercial or industrial building. Proper surface preparation will ensure a long-lasting finish that can withstand the harsh climate of the Chicago area. By following the steps outlined in this blog post, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that will protect your building for years to come. Hayduke Day 8: It rained most of last night but the wind has finally died down. The morning's hike follows a dirt road (lots of this on the Hayduke) before heading cross-country down into a wash. It's in this wash where I encounter some tricky dryfalls that require me to do some investigating to find the best (safest) way down. Eventually, the trail climbs onto the mesa once more and enters Canyonlands National Park for the first time. The Hayduke dips in and out of Canyonlands a couple of times before entering the park "for real". I take a quick detour to the Loop Overlook (where this photo was taken) which is basically Horseshoe Bend without all the tourists or the cover charge. Probably worth the detour. When I reach the Canyonlands National Park boundary, I am planning to camp. However, I still have enough daylight to make it to Needles Outpost. Putting in the extra miles today means that tomorrow can be a zero day instead of a nearo. I make it to the Outpost and am greeted by Caleb (one of the owners, I believe) who treats me to whiskey and a plate of Thai food. There are also three cats and a friendly dog hanging out. Later that night I meet his wife (and presumably fellow owners) Amber who is equally hospitable and hiker friendly. As I pick through the resupply box I sent myself here (also the box I'm using to send my packraft ahead to Hanksville), I chat with the now second Hayduke hiker I've met - apparently, there are also two other Haydukers here somewhere. Counting the one behind me whom I met yesterday, it appears that I'm in quite the bubble. Looking forward to resting tomorrow and petting all the cats. Day: Lockhart Basin to Needles Outpost Distance:聽25.05 mi / 40.30 km Elevation gain:聽 2,572 ft / 784 m #hayduketrail #utahbackpacking
