This panel and so many others just like it are in danger due to a proposed Hydrocarbon Highway through Nine Mile Canyon in Utah. From the Nine MIle Canyon Coalition:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is considering a proposal by Duchesne County to construct a Hydrocarbon Highway through Gate Canyon, connecting the Uinta Basin to Nine Mile Canyon. The intent of the project is to facilitate trucking of Uinta waxy crude oil and expand oil production in the Basin. The project would obliterate Gate Canyon, removing its meanders and filling the canyon with over 180 feet of dirt. Once completed, it is anticipated there will be one oil tanker every three minutes through Nine Nile Canyon. Woman killed by ice column after pushing fellow hiker to safety

A hiker is dead and two others are lucky to be alive after an ice column fell from a frozen waterfall and nearly killed all of them before the victim pushed one of them out of the way to safety, according to the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office.

John Hanks Alexander (January 6, 1864 – March 26, 1894) was the first African-American officer in the Armed Forces to hold a regular command position and the second African-American graduate of the United States Military Academy. He was born in Helena, Arkansas, the fourth of seven children born to former slaves James Milo Alexander and Fannie Miller Alexander. He was a barber and dry goods salesman in Helena and acquired property there. He was the first African American Justice of the Peace in Arkansas and represented Phillips County in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He graduated number one in his high school class and moved to Carrollton, Mississippi, to take a position as a teacher. In late 1880 he visited his uncle in Cincinnati and ended up remaining in that city. He enrolled at Oberlin College and attended that institution until passing the entrance examination for West Point in 1883. He was sponsored by Democratic Rep. George W. Geddes of Ohio. During his term at West Point, he was accepted by the other cadets and was not subjected to as much intolerance as previous African American cadets. He was known as an excellent student, especially in mathematics and languages, and was a skilled boxer while at the academy. He graduated in the class of 1887 ranking 32nd in a class of 64. He was assigned to the 9th US Cavalry Regiment at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, which was an all-black regiment commanded by white officers and nicknamed Buffalo soldiers. In 1888, he was transferred to Fort Washakie, Wyoming, where he performed the garrison duty typical of an officer with a western frontier posting. While assigned to Fort Duchesne, Utah, in 1889, he temporarily led the 9th Cavalry's B Troop, becoming the first African American officer in the Army to hold a command position. Fruitland, UT (No. 2)

Fruitland has a busy local store with basic groceries, gas, diesel and a cafe. The last census, in 2016, counted 539 people. Many homes in the area are recreational. Surrounded by Strawberry, Starvation, Red Creek and Current Creek reservoirs Fruitland is popular for fishing and water recreation. The reservoirs freeze in the winter, bringing many ice fishers.

The settlement was originally called Rabbit Gulch, but unscrupulous land developers renamed it Fruitland in 1907, hoping to draw the unwary to buy land that was unsuitable for growing any kind of fruit.

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Fruitland has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.

Jana Elementary to close in Florissant following report of radioactive contamination

The school, located at 405 Jana Drive and opened in 1970, sits in the flood plain of Coldwater Creek, which was contaminated by waste from the development of atomic weapons. Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. processed massive amounts of uranium ore on the Mississippi riverfront, north of downtown St. Louis, from 1942 to 1957. Tons of byproduct with residual radioactive material were shipped to a location on the northern border of the airport, next to Coldwater Creek, to be stored. It was later trucked about a mile away, to an industrial area in the 9200 block of Latty Avenue, which also borders Coldwater Creek.

The sources of contamination at the main storage sites have mainly been remediated. Now the ongoing, multimillion dollar focus of the Army Corps of Engineers has been testing so Coldwater Creek can finally be cleaned up. Before emptying in the Missouri River, the creek travels through Hazelwood, Florissant, Black Jack, unincorporated St. Louis County and a sliver of Berkeley.

U.S. Rep. Cori Bush, D-St. Louis, called for an “immediate cleanup.”

“The federal government is responsible for this waste, and we need answers,” Bush said in a press release.

Last week, a report from an ongoing lawsuit was publicized, claiming radioactive waste was found at the school up to 22 times the expected level.

Samples taken Aug. 15 from Jana Elementary’s library, kitchen, HVAC system, classrooms, fields and playgrounds were found “far in excess of the natural background” of radioactive isotope lead-210, polonium, radium and other toxins, according to a Boston Chemical Data Corp. report, which was produced for an ongoing lawsuit.

In a Tuesday telephone interview, Marco Kaltofen, who wrote the report in question, said he stands by the findings.

“By far, the greatest part of the contamination we found comes from Manhattan Project waste,” he said.

The Jana Elementary property is one spot along 19 miles of Coldwater Creek.

Though federal public health officials previously called for additional testing inside North County homes, the Corps is focused on testing and remediating within the 10-year flood plain. Corps officials have said that nearly all the lingering contamination they have found is bound between the banks, a few feet down, but that there are exceptions.

Parts of St. Cin Park in Hazelwood, including a few backyards along Palm Drive, were already remediated in recent years. So was a high bank of the creek bordering Duchesne Park in Florissant. There’s an ongoing effort to remediate former baseball fields across from the airport site along McDonnell Boulevard near Boeing where children and adults used to play.

Within the year, Moser said a design plan will be in place to clean up the rest of the creek based on hot spots found from their sampling. He said the cleanup of the whole creek will be done by 2038. In 2021, the Corps’ budget for the project was $34.55 million, up from $20 million in 2019.

By late 2021, the Corps had tested to Old Halls Ferry Road, about 10 miles downstream. Of those 29,000 samples taken, the Corps said less than 5% were above evaluation criteria.
