The Evolution of Madhubani Art Over Time
Tumblr media
Madhubani art (also Mithila art) is a style of painting practiced in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. It is named after the Madhubani district of Bihar, India, which is where it originated. Artists create these paintings using a variety of mediums, including their own fingers, or twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchstick. The paint is created using natural dyes and pigments. The paintings are characterized by their eye-catching geometrical patterns. There is ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shasti, Kali Puja, Upanayana, and Durga Puja.
Madhubani painting (or Mithila painting) was traditionally created by the women of various communities in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. It originated from Madhubani district of the Mithila region of Bihar. Madhubani is also a major export center of these paintings.
This painting as a form of wall art was practiced widely throughout the region; the more recent development of painting on paper and canvas mainly originated among the villages around Madhubani, and it is these latter developments that led to the term “Madhubani art” being used alongside “Mithila Painting.”
Mithila paintings mostly depict people and their association with nature and scenes and deities from the ancient epics. Natural objects like the sun, the moon, and religious plants like tulsi are also widely painted, along with scenes from the royal court and social events like weddings. In this paintings generally, no space is left empty; the gaps are filled by paintings of flowers, animals, birds, and even geometric designs.[citation needed] Traditionally, painting was one of the skills that was passed down from generation to generation in the families of the Mithila Region, mainly by women .
It is still practiced and kept alive in institutions spread across the Mithila region. Asha Jha of Madhubanipaints in Darbhanga,
Vaidehi in Madhubani, Benipatti in Madhubani district and Gram Vikas Parishad in Ranti are some of the major centres of Madhubani painting which have kept this ancient art form alive.
Contributions:
The Madhubani painting tradition played a key role in the conservation efforts in India in 2012, where there was frequent deforestation in the state of Bihar. Shashthi Nath Jha, who runs the Gram Vikas Parishad, an NGO, started the initiative as an attempt to protect local trees that were being cut down in the name of expanding roads and development. The main reason behind this was that the trees were traditionally adorned with forms of gods and other religious and spiritual images such as those of Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita, scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata and other mythologies.
Darbhanga MP Gopal Jee Thakur started the tradition of honouring people with Mithila Painting in Indian Politics.
Awards:
Madhubani painting received official recognition in 1969 when Sita Devi received the State award by Government of Bihar. Mamta Devi from the village Jitwarpur has also got National Award. Jagdamba Devi from Bhajparaul, Madhubani was given Padma Shri in 1975 and the National Award to Sita Devi of Jitwarpur village near Madhubani.
Jagdamba Devi’s foster son Satya Narayan Lal Karn and his wife Moti Karn are also well-regarded Mithila artists, and they won the National Award jointly in 2003. Sita Devi received the Padma Shri in 1981. Sita Devi was also awarded by Bihar Ratna in 1984 and Shilp Guru in 2006.
In 1984 Ganga Devi was awarded by Padma Shri. Mahasundari Devi received the Padma Shri in 2011. Baua Devi, Yamuna Devi, Shanti Devi, Chano Devi, Bindeshwari Devi, Chandrakala Devi, Shashi kala Devi, Leela Devi, Godavari Dutta, Asha Jha and Bharti Dayal were also given the National award.
Chandrabhushan (Rasidpur), Ambika Devi (Rasidpur), Manisha Jha were also given the National award.[citation needed] In 2020, Madhubani artist Dulari Devi won the Padma Shri for contributions to art.
Styles:
Mithila art has five distinctive styles:
Bharni
Katchni
Tantrik
Godna
Kohbar
In the 1960s Bharni, and Tantrik styles were mainly done by Brahman women in India and Nepal. Their themes were mainly religious and they depicted Gods and Goddesses paintings. People of other castes included aspects of their daily life and symbols, the story of Raja Shailesh (guard of the village) and much more, in their paintings. Nowadays Madhubani art has become a globalised art form, so there is no difference in the work on the basis of the caste system. They work in all five styles. Mithila art has received worldwide attention.
The paintings were traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.
Madhubani paintings are made from the paste of powdered rice. Madhubani painting has remained confined to a compact geographical area and the skills have been passed on through centuries, the content and the style have largely remained the same. Thus, Madhubani painting has received GI (Geographical Indication) status. Madhubani paintings use two-dimensional imagery, and the colors used are derived from plants. Ochre, Lampblack and Red are used for reddish-brown and black, respectively.

Dulari Devi Illustrations for Following My Paint Brush India (2011) [Source]
Kirkus says:
Devi, a woman from the state of Bihar, has illustrated her life story with Mithila folk-art paintings that employ bold patterns of parallel black lines, swirling shapes and intense solid colors. The straightforward text in Devi’s voice tells of her childhood and her hard work in the rice fields and the marketplace. Unschooled, she is doomed to be a cleaner in someone else’s home. When she finds work at an artist’s house, her creative yearnings find an outlet, and an artist is born.
In an afterword, Devi is described as combining community traditions with modern themes, and her double-page spread of “Raju Ice Creame Wala” (“The Ice-Cream Man”) surrounded by eager children in traditional dress, under a spreading leafy tree with a highly decorated trunk, is the best example of this synthesis.
The paintings, based on traditional floor and wall decorations, have been commercialized, but they also provide a way for rural women to make a living. Devi’s story has been put into written form by Wolf, but it is the paintings that stand out here.

To reach Manjhi and Dulari, the national honour has travelled a long way, down dirt roads and mud tracks, to their houses in caste-divided, poverty-stricken Bihar villages. And both the new Padma Shris say it is their life circumstances that…

Tribute to Shakeel Badayuni, Hindi cinema's one of the most shining lyricists and poets, on his 49th death anniversary today. Shakeel Badayuni was one of the famous Urdu poets and lyricists of 50s and 60s. He is best remembered for most of his songs with music director Naushad. The most important characteristic of songs of Shakeel Badayuni is their variety and diversity. Shakeel wrote ghazals, geet, poorbi songs, bhajans, naats, qawwali, and sad numbers. Shakeel Badayuni was born at Badayun, Uttar Pradesh on August 3, 1916. After getting early education at home, he graduated from Aligarh Muslim University in 1942. After graduation, he got a clerical job in the Supply department and started living in Delhi. Meanwhile, when working in Delhi, he continued to participate in mushairas happening nearby the city. In 1944, he left his Government job and moved to Bombay to become a lyricist. Shakeel moved to Bombay in 1944 to write songs for films. He met film producer, A.R. Kardar and music composer, Naushad Ali who asked him to sum up his poetic skills in one line. Shakeel wrote, "Hum dard Ka Afsana Duniya Ko Suna Denge, Har Dil Mein Mohabbat Ki Ek Aag Laga Denge". Naushad immediately signed him for Kardar’s film, Dard (1947). The songs of Dard proved to be very successful especially Uma Devi (Tun Tun)’s "Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon". Only a few are so lucky that they attain success in their first film, but Shakeel deserved success which started with Dard and continued on over the years. Together, he and Naushad became one of the most sought after composer/lyricist duos in the industry. Among the scores they churned out together, are those of Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), that stand out. Other films they scored together include Dulari (1949), Shabab (1954), Ganga Jamuna(1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963). Although Shakeel Badayuni worked most extensively with Naushad, he also collaborated with Ravi and Hemant Kumar as well. His notable films with Ravi are Gharana (1961) and Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), while Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) is his biggest hit with Hemant Kumar. Shakeel won three Filmfare Awards in a row from 1961 to 1963 for his songs 'Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil' (Bees Saal Baad), 'Husnwaale Tera Jawab Nahin' (Gharana) and 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho' (Chaudhvin Ka Chand). He was also nominated for films Mere Mehboob and Do Badan. A postage stamp was released on 3 May 2013 by India Post to honor him. Shakeel Badayuni, the master of poetry, passed away on 20th April 1970.

Padma Shri Dulari Devi Married off at the tender age of 13, Dulari Devi never received any formal education leaving her unlettered. Her marriage came to an end after the demise of her infant. Abandoned by her husband in her trying times, Dulari Devi resorted to serve as a domestic help to eke a livelihood. Thus began her artful journey. As she carried out her duties at Mahasundari Devi's household, the artist recognized Dulari's potential and enrolled her in an art school to learn Madhubani art. Dulari Devi rose from her destitute and mastered the Mithila art tradition to such perfection that she bagged a multitude of government contracts to adorn the country with the rustic allure of Madhubani art. We feel blessed to have got a glimpse of her artistry in the painting she gifted Prime Minister Narendra Modi after she was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award.

3rd August marks the birth day of one of the legends of Indian film music, Shakeel Badayuni, the shayar supreme Geetkar-e-Azam' was born at Badayun in UP in 1916. Other films they scored together include Dulari (1949), Shabab (1954), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963). Although Shakeel Badayuni worked most extensively with Naushad, he also collaborated with Ravi and Hemant Kumar as well. His lyrics for the song Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin and Ravi's music score both won Filmfare Awards for the hit film Gharana. His other notable film with Ravi is Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), while Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) is his biggest hit with Hemant Kumar. The title song from Chaudhvin Ka Chand, rendered by Mohammed Rafi, won Badayuni the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 1961. Shakeel penned numbers for around 89 films. In addition, he wrote many popular ghazals sung by Begum Akhtar, and which are still sung by vocalists like Pankaj Udhas and others. The Indian government had honoured him with the title Geet Kar-e-Azam. Association with Naushad Shakeel shared a close friendship with Naushad, Ravi and Naushad's former assistant, Ghulam Mohammed, with whom he enjoyed his life to the fullest. Naushad used Shakeel as the lyricist for his tunes for most of his films for a period of 24 years. Baiju Bawra, which was a milestone in both of their careers, was supposed to go to Kavi Pradeep. Vijay Bhatt, the director of the movie was insistent on using Kavi Pradeep as lyricist, since the film was supposed to have many devotional songs. Naushad requested Vijay Bhatt to hear the lyrics written by Shakeel. Vijay Bhatt agreed. When Shakeel Badayuni was diagnosed with TB, he was put up in a sanitorium in Panchgani for treatment. Naushad knowing that his financial condition was not well, took 3 films to him, getting the lyrcis written in the sanatorium, and got him a payment of nearly 10 times more than his normal fees. Association with Ravi Shakeel also wrote a substantial chunk of his songs for music director Ravi Sharma. Prominent amongst those were Gharana (1961), Ghunghat,Grahasti (1963), Nartaki (1963), as well as Phool Aur Patthar and Do Badan. Association with Hemant Kumar Shakeel wrote for Hemant Kumar for movies like Bees Saal Baad, Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam, Bin Badal Barsaat. Association with S.D.Burman Shakeel penned lyrics for the tunes of S D Burman for movies Kaise Kahoon & Benazir. Others C.Ramachandra – Zindagi Aur Maut, Wahan Ke Log. Roshan – Bedaag, Noorjahan. There is so much that can be written about him, but words will not suffice. At last all we can say is “ये झिंदगी के मेले, दुनिया में कम ना होंगे....अफसोस हम न होंगे" Like बॉलीवुड डायरेक्ट Bollywoodirect
