Week 5 Reflection
Caiqin Guo-S3781225
This week I completed the AT2 presentation and received many valuable feedbacks from Darrin. Although my first example may not be accurate, everyone may have a different understanding of the word exhilarating, so the music I found did not make everyone feel exhilarating. But through this presentation, I have made it clearer what kind of music I want to create. It is important to stand in the majority's perspective. I intend to make higher arousal valence positive music. Consider that the black box can't be used due to the lockdown, I will use a synthesizer to make the sound, using software such as Ableton live, pro tool, and garage band to make the music. The first project with my partner will focus on screen-based screen-based audiovisual artwork. She will film her video and include a little bit of animation, and I will create the music for the video.
Tumblr media
Studies have found that when humans receive their favorite music, their brains will feel very good. When they hear exhilarating music, their brains will become excited The average participant’s heart rate rose by 21bpm from their resting heart rate while listening to punk, all the way to 86bpm. "when the notes get higher and higher, perhaps prompting a similar surge of energy that we feel from the driving beat throughout the track".(Marianne Rizkallah the head music therapist from North London Music Therapy). Research has also shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain chill-associated increases in autonomic arousal regardless of the valence of the sound. amygdala responses were observed only with chills elicited by unpleasant sounds. Additionally, memories associated with familiar music might also have an effect on the emotional experience [14]. The recall of memories (Brain imaging of chill reactions to pleasant and unpleasant sounds). (i.e., subjective, psychophysiological, and facial expressive) in response to auditory stimuli (i.e., standardized vs. personally relevant; pleasant vs. unpleasant sounds). The BBC's study and regulation of dance music centered around two goals: pleasing important groups in national service and broadcasting morale-boosting music. Dancing is the most stress-free thing for them. Darrin suggests the mix cube from immersion and it provides a 3D audio mixing platform. I will try to create my project on this platform it looks very professional, This allows me to create my project add the audio sources, position, edit, and render them.
youtube
I will use a combination of musical instruments to make music sound richer, more harmonious, and more lively music. I will use a synthesizer to create the music and of course, I will also record some sounds for dubbing as my partner's video contains other sounds such as the sound of falling water, the sound of trains, and the sound of people chatting on the street. I will record that by using a recorder. British composer Sheridan Tongue recommends an audio-specific digital recorder over any other handheld device that records sound. It is very important to use professional recording equipment, which can record distant sounds clearly, and the sound quality will be clearer and accurate. Also, professional recording equipment will be more reliable. From the 20 exhilarating music examples I sent to Darrin, I found that they all have a common feature. When I hear them, it will make my body sway with the music and nod my head. I will want to dance to the music. In my project, I will use electronic dance music. I think it brings an exhilarating experience to people in many ways. You can feel EDMC as a new ‘spirituality of life’ both auditorily and visually. Also, explore the creative effect of the audiovisual three-dimensional stage because only a good level of music and color can better guarantee the lighting and sound stage effect, The choice of lighting color is also very important. Most likely I will use brighter colors to eye-catching the audience present a good sensory experience.
I will follow my timeline to keep everything on time. This week, the team members and I consolidated our ideas and the theme of the video, and we discussed our plans for cooperation. Including when to shoot the video and when to start making music, we will give the venue to discuss and give feedback to each other.

HC tells AAP govt to ensure food, shelter for Delhi riot victims - delhi news
The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the AAP government to ensure victims of the recent northeast Delhi riots, who may be homeless at the moment, are provided with food and accommodation either at the community centres or night shelters.
A bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Talwant Singh, which conducted the proceedings through video-conferencing, also asked the government to ensure the provision of food, water and medical aid to such individuals.
“The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) shall furthermore, individually and jointly, ensure that sanitation, cleanliness and hygiene is properly and regularly maintained at the locations/centres/shelters, where the riot victims are to be housed,” the bench said, in its order.
The court passed the order while issuing notices to the Centre, represented by advocate Amit Mahajan, Delhi government, represented by counsel Rahul Mehra, and the EDMC, represented by lawyer Abhinav S Aggarwal.
It sought their responses on a plea by Shaikh Mujtaba Farooq seeking direction to authorities to re-open the relief camp at Idgah in Mustafabad and provide proper food supplies, adequate water, sanitation and security to the victims.
The petitioner, represented through senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, sought direction for EDMC to clean the area and drains twice a day on a war-footing basis. “In the meantime, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi is directed to ensure that all the riot victims, who may be shelterless at the moment, are provided with accommodation, either at the community centres or at the night shelters operated by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) in the Northeast District, Delhi,” the court said.
The bench asked the authorities to file short replies to the plea and in view of the urgency expressed by the petitioner, list the matter for further hearing on March 30.
The plea also sought direction to the authorities to publicly announce on television and in the newspapers that the Idgah camp is open and all those who want to seek refuge there are welcome to return.
In February, communal riots broke out in parts of northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

NGT rejects EDMC's proposal to set up landfill site near Yamuna, calls it 'unsuitable'
Expert panel has shot down east civic body's proposal to set-up 150-acre landfill site on Yamuna floodplain by terming it 'unsuitable' and may lead to public health hazard. The decision by the principal committee constituted by the NGT to discuss the issue has brought some relief to the environmentalists who had been fighting against the project claiming that it could make the river dead causing severe health issues.
In a recent meeting held by the four members of principal committee, it pointed the site proposed for landfill of solid waste on Yamuna floodplain by MCD is unsuitable ecologically and environmentally and from public healthy point of view. "The land cannot be used for landfills of solid waste and other ancillary units (C&D waste to energy)," members highlighted in the meeting. Officials of MCD and DDA who participated in the meeting also showed their consent with the decision.
Members also expressed that the site proposed for landfill and other ancillary units (C&D waste to energy) is an active floodplain with wetlands that store flood water and recharge ground water.

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) had proposed to set 150 acre landfill project and waste of energy plant along Pushta Road, from Shastri Park crossing to Khajoori Khas crossing. The land owning body Delhi Development Authority also sanctioned this land to East Corporation for developing a sanitary landfill.
All the three civic bodies are reeling under the pressure of disposing solid waste. Delhi already has three landfills Gazipur in the East, Bhalswa in the North and Okhla in the South all of these are exhausted as they have been around for 20 to 30 years. The areas in the vicinity of these landfills are highly polluted.
Parliamentary Committee highlighted that leaching from solid waste will contaminate the ground aquifer system leading to a public health hazard and hence the site is unsuitable for landfill for solid waste and other ancillary sites. MCD also agreed to approach DDA in future for land after making comprehensive arrangement for advice.
PROJECT WAS WRONG AND ILLEGAL: ACTIVIST MANOJ MISRA
Welcoming the decision, Yamuna activist Manoj Misra who has been fighting against the project said, "The project was wrong and illegal on the part of both DDA and the EDMC to plan on utilising 150 acre of Yamuna active floodplain for a landfill and waste to energy plant etc. We are glad that the NGT Committee rejected the said plans in unequivocal terms."
The chairman of the committee pointed out that the MCD should start segregation of solid waste at source and adopts a decentralized method of treatment of solid waste by converting the wet waste to compost, inorganic for recycling and C&D for useful construction material.
"Once this is adopted, the land requirement for landfill will be drastically reduced and there is no justification for MCD's demand for 150 acres," it said.
MCD officials mentioned that the safe disposal of solid waste is also a public utility service and some land should be made available for the landfill of solid waste. Civic bodies have been demanding land for waste disposal for long as all the existing sites are exhausted and has completed their life. Delhi produces around 10,000 MTD but the current processing capacity of waste in the city is around 5,000 MTD. Around 50 per cent is not being processed.
East Delhi has one landfill site at Ghazipur which is operational since 1984. In east corporation's area, around 2,200-2,500 metric tonne (MT) per day of municipal waste, 500MT of construction and debris waste and 700-800 MT of silt per day are generated, officials said. The Ghazipur site contains at least 13 million tonnes of waste and has outlived its normal life span.
Interestingly, MCD in its petition to NGT had termed the project 'in the interest of the public' while seeking approval. However environmentalists claim that conceptualisation of this project violates all the rules and against the ecology.

Flat Freire is drawing attention to the fact that for the first time in my entire educational career, my EDMC 3300 professor has explicitly stated his pronoun in his syllabus.  Professor Felton-Koestler not only has this written down in his syllabus, but he also introduced himself to the class by expressing his preferred pronouns. At the time I thought, “Wow this is going to be the next, big thing”.  I did not really appreciate the significance nor how powerful his statement truly meant for students who are gender non-conforming. During the LGBT Speak Out, the guest speakers encouraged us to not be afraid to ask students what their preferred pronouns are, and to even purposely facilitate this as a whole class share out.  Although at the time, what Professor Felton- Koestler said seemed quite revolutionary and perhaps a bit “radical” hopefully one day this will be normalized and become something students at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary level will come to expect.
In our class, we were all expected to read GLAAD, “Media Reference Guide: Transgender Issues”.  This article, also argues that we should ask a transgender person what pronouns they would like you to use (p. 5).  I can only speak for myself, but when working with students who I cannot “visible” tell if they are male or female, I am way too afraid to ask them what their preferred pronouns are.  For instance, my first year ever as counselor there was a child with long blonde hair.  I was having a huge internal discrepancy because I could not tell if the child was a girl or a boy.  For those first weeks of camp, I avoided speaking to the child altogether because I was too afraid to hurt their feelings and embarrass myself. However, I realize how much easier this situation would have went if I had just asked him what his preferred pronouns were from day one. In fact, if I modeled this behavior perhaps other children would not have the same unanswered questions as well and would emulate my behavior in the future. Clearly, Professor Felton-Koestler is encouraging his students to tell him our preferred pronouns in hopes that one day we will grant our students’ the same opportunity.
Lastly, in the reading "Naming All the Parts" which was written by Kate Bornstein. Bornstein brings up a good point, “Do we have the legal or moral right to decide and assign our own gender” (p. 23).  As educators, it is our job to promote and expand student’s growth. Thus, we must provide opportunities for our students to share their preferred pronouns like Professor Felton-Koestler did in his syllabus. Students deserve to be validated and respected. We cannot truly respect them if we continuously antagonize them by using the wrong pronouns. At the end of the day, it is time that we start using a person’s preferred pronoun, and it is time we expose our student’s to the fact that everyone is different, but being different is perfectly normal and definitely acceptable!
