Today there is no poem.
Instead, there's a link to an article and recording of a synagogue service recorded in Morocco. There was an extensive Jewish community in Demanate for many centureis (none today).
Note: the link to the article / recording works (text to the contrary notwithstanding).
Jews lived in Demnate in the 1100s, four centuries before the mellah of Marrakech was founded.  In the 16th century, the Granada-born Muslim traveler Leon L’African visited Demnate and found many Jews in a population of 2,000 households. Their occupations included serving as merchants, traders and artisans.
Demnate’s Jews got along well with the town’s Muslims during the first part of the 19th century. They lived among Muslims and invested together in businesses.
However, in 1884 the Jews of Demnate reported to the Sultan that the Governor forced them to work on the Sabbath, clean dirty areas, carry heavy objects on their backs, work without pay and sell their merchandise at half price. They also complained that Jewish women were forced to work without approval of their husbands.
In response, the Minister of Great Britain in Tangier pressured the Sultan to allow more protégés in Demnate. These reports, as well as other reports of atrocities in the coastal city of Safi, were used by Sir Moses Montefiore to justify his visit to Morocco in 1864, where he put pressure on the Sultan to improve the conditions of the Kingdom’s Jews.
The Demnate mellah was built in 1887. Jewish leaders continued to complain about mistreatment by the Governor and an 1894 attack on the mellah. Susequently, the caids of Demnate, members of the El Glaoui family, treated Jews with respect during the French Protectorate in Morocco from 1912-1956.
Jews made up a large percentage of Demnate’s population. In 1883, there were 1,700 Jews in a population of 4,000. In 1960, the 1,200 Jews were almost 20% of the population. Today, the town hosts no Jews. The cemetery has four Jewish saints, including Rabbi David El Draa Halevy, at whose tomb there is an annual hiloula.

My Personal Journey Through Morocco: An 8-Day Tour of Imperial Cities
Tumblr media
DAY 1: CASABLANCA, MOROCCO
Upon arriving at Mohammed V airport in Casablanca, I was warmly greeted by my English-speaking Resident Tour Director. He held a sign with my name and escorted me to my hotel in Casablanca.
Casablanca – The City
Casablanca, known as Casa or Dar el Baida, is Morocco's economic and commercial hub. The city offers a blend of modernity and tradition. I explored the Hassan II Mosque, admired its stunning architecture and oceanfront setting. I wandered through the Old Medina, with its maze of streets and vibrant souks, and marveled at the Art Deco buildings in the new town.
HASSAN II MOSQUE This mosque, one of the largest in the world, features a 200-meter-high minaret and beautiful lighting that enhances its architecture.
DAY 2: CASABLANCA | FEZ VIA RABAT
I began my Morocco imperial cities tour from Casablanca by visiting the impressive Hassan II Mosque. Then, I traveled to Rabat, exploring its historic medina and bustling markets, before heading to Fez.
Rabat – The City
Rabat's medina, with its powerful ramparts and busy souks, provided a fascinating glimpse into Morocco's history and culture. I visited the Kasbah of the Udayas and the Hassan Tower, both offering stunning views.
DAY 3: FEZ | THE MEDIEVAL CITY
Fez el-Bali, the old quarter, felt like stepping back in time. I wandered through its narrow alleys, visited the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), and dined at a traditional Moroccan riad.
DAY 4: FEZ | MEKNES | ROMAN RUINS OF VOLUBILIS
I traveled to Meknes, another UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its grand gates and mausoleums. The highlight was visiting the Roman ruins of Volubilis, with its well-preserved mosaics.
DAY 5: MARRAKECH | THE “RED CITY”
After breakfast, I headed to Marrakech, arriving in the afternoon. The city's vibrant medina and Djemaa el-Fna square were captivating, filled with food vendors, performers, and a lively atmosphere.
DAY 6: MARRAKECH
I explored Marrakech's ancient medina, visiting the Dar Si Said Museum, El Badi Palace, and the Koutoubia Mosque. Strolling through Djemaa el-Fna square was a sensory delight.
DAY 7: MARRAKECH | ATLAS MOUNTAINS
I chose a full-day excursion to the High Atlas Mountains. The majestic views, a hike to a picturesque village, and time spent with local Berbers were unforgettable. I learned about their daily life while enjoying traditional Berber bread and mint tea.
DAY 8: DEPART MARRAKECH
I transferred to the airport in Marrakech, marking the end of my unforgettable tour from Casablanca.

Algeria. Salim Halali, born Simon Halali, is an Algerian jewish singer of Andalusian music. He was born on July, 30th, 1920 in the city of Annaba, in a family who is originally from Souk Ahras.
In 1937, when in France, Mohamed el Kamel and Mohamed Iguerbouchène compose about fifty songs in Arabic for Salim Halali who became well-known all over North Africa but also among famous Egyptian singers like Our Kalthoum and Mohamed Abdelwahed.
During the second World War and under the Nazi Occupation of France, Halali was given a false birth certificate by Si Kaddour Benghabrit, the founder and first rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, to proof he was muslim. He also etched the name of Salim’s late father on a tombstone in the muslim cemetery of Bobigny to avoid him being deported.
In 1949, he moved to Morocco where he bought an old café in the Mellah of Casablanca : Le Coq d’Or, one the most prestigious cabaret in the country, was born.
In1960, Halali left Morocco for the South of France when his cabaret was destroyed in a fire. He continued to perform on famous stages until the early nineties. He died on June, 25th, 2005 in the south of France.
