“Make Alterations Great Again”, Part 2 - Sun Ra’s Roman Holiday

I was immensely cheered, on the 12th. September 2015, when the Sun Ra Arkestra favoured a blog that I had made a few days before, entitled Cosmic Debris. So made up, in fact, that I still have a printed copy of their response magnet-ed to my fridge, which indicates how simple my pleasures are nowadays.

This blog concerned itself, inter alia, with some of my faves of the Arkestra’s immense output, among which are the ‘Rome sessions’ from January 1978, which were, somewhat ironically, made by a four-piece. This was unusual for Ra, who made a few solo albums, but very few small-group recordings. To complement the Rome sessions, I would also mention, as their peer in both time-frame and quality, the LP  Omniverse, a criminally-underrated and under-available release from September 1979, which was recorded in NYC, by the same quartet, and, as far as I know, only available on the (obviously very rare) Saturn vinyl edition,

Omniverse, and New Steps, the latter being one of the two recordings made for the Horo label in Rome that January, were my basic introductions to Ra’s uni-, sorry, omniverse, in 1981. There was a record shop in Leamington Spa, where I lived for a few years, called Reddington’s Rare Records (which was the West Midlands version of Compendium Books), which also sold books and arcane musical instruments. It was from this outlet (which was very much of its time) that I obtained both Omniverse and New Steps. And other wonderful esoterica. 

Horo Records folded in 1979, and I do wonder what the copyright negotiations were like for The Mystery of Being, the 3 x vinyl album box-set that my beady eye caught being displayed on Oto’s shelves at tonight’s Alterations gig. Apparently, this item has been around for a while, according to Discogs since around 2011, which I was not aware of (to my embarrassment), but I was chuffed to buy it at £30, not a huge amount in today’s vinyl market. This set houses two of the three Sun Ra Horo double album releases, the other of which, called Unity, was made live in NYC in 1977 (and is very different in both sound and intent). The two Rome releases, New Steps and Other Voices, Other Blues, were recorded on the 2nd, 7th, 8th and 13th January 1978, in Roman studios, at a time when Sun Ra albums were increasingly recording live performances, and were, perhaps, increasingly reflecting what was rapidly  becoming a repertory outfit. This classic quartet consisted of Ra, the mighty John Gilmore on both his trademark tenor and assorted percussion, Michael Ray on trumpet, and Luqman Ali on drums, all of whom managed to convey Ra’s ambitious music effectively, even though on a micro-level. This is my favourite Saturn material, and always will be. Somehow, they had the power and authority of the whole Arkestra invested in them (as opposed to Donald Trump, who doesn’t seem able to make any power/authority truly adhere to himself, however hard he tries).

Horo Records were relatively short lived (1972-9), but were important for the free jazz scene at the time. Their HDP series had great covers and graphic design. I also obtained Archie Shepp’s little-known Horo release, In The Tradition, from Reddington’s at around the same time (this record was an early indicator of the volte face of some of the 1960s innovators, as well as being great jazz).   These sleeves were slightly ECM-tasteful, and I am pleased to see that they have been replicated, even down to the typography and background imaging, in the Klimpt Records (for it is they, but I have no idea who they are) 3 x CD set that I bought tonight. The HDP series also only released double albums, for some reason. Unfortunately, despite the 140 gram weight (not 180 or even, gasp, 220!), Klimpt Records (who operate from Paris, seemigly) did not see fit to include any accompanying literature, which is always a downer for us box-set junkies. So all you get is the albums. Which, of course, is all you need (sob,sob).

In 1981, as I remember, there wasn’t an awful lot of Ra material available for the curious, even in London. There was the Solar-Myth Approach on Byg-Actuel,(not one of his best, imho) and the ESP stuff (i.e. The Heliocentic World and Nothing Is...,) but, haha, Nothing Else!!. We really had to wait until the early 1990s, and the wonderful Evidence label (what happened to you guys?), before the full Ra cosmogony became more fully available. I am thus full of the ‘Sound of Joy’ to see Ra’s small, yet mighty, quartets from 1978, becoming more available for those still finding their way around the man’s immense and challenging discography.

and how Horo talked about bickering over stupid things with Earl and probably others too. and also the fact Earl... just. He tried his best, did his best for what he could do. The fact he was already raising Horo on his own even before Nirvana Company & Legion and trying to do everything and im just- GOD!

PTN does a really good job with the dynamic, esp for what little we actually get. Maybe its just situational, but i'm the oldest out of 5 kids and there's 5-7 years between me and the 4 others. And I also had to play parent sometimes when my dad was deployed overseas for a year (give or take a month). And even just with that?? it definitely created a different dynamic between me and my siblings. bc i was their older sister but sometimes i was also playing parent. and my siblings are older now so we've talked about it. but one time we all ended up crying in my car because beind the oldest i was trying to play parent and sibling, but they didn't always know how to interact or get to know me as me. And i always felt i had to take on all the burdens and i couldn't....show my emotions. I needed to be strong for my siblings and my mom. and like....idk. a lot of attention went to my siblings, and i get it. they were younger and they're all super close in age, but i played a huge support role and so everything i needed or wanted i shoved down to be last priority for my siblings ( most of the time, i mean i was a kid myself too trying to figure this all out ). and idk. its just. hard.

Even the other day it was kind of pointed out that i'm extremely good at shutting down how i'm doing to help or deal with other problems. and idk. i think thats why Horo's interrogation also hit a particularly hard spot and always makes me tear up, just hearing it from the other side versus my own & how my little brothers have mentioned it now that we're older and.........im rambling and this probably doesnt make sense but i just. needed it out there.

Míg tavalyi összegzésemben  azt írtam, hogy a covid nem volt hatással a zenei termékenységre, egy év elteltével sajnos ezt már nem állíthatom. Főleg a táncos műfajok sínylették meg ezt az időszakot, e-képp kijelenthető, hogy a súlypontok is eltolódtak a nagylemezek felé, és a kislemez állomány már nem domináns, ami elég furcsa. Nagyon sok az új név, és az utóbbi 10 év húzóneveinek 50-60%-a vagy inaktív vagy rosszabb: szögre akasztotta a midikábelt végleg. Az albumok mezőnyében a megszokottabb nevek (Alva Noto, Cristian Vogel, Nils Frahm, Tomaga) mellett nagy visszatérők (Jean-Louis Huhta, The Bug) vannak, és egy posztumusz kiadvány is (Moebius Strips), mégis az újakról ejtenék szót. Úgy kapásból az első három lemezről, melyek közül a Shackleton - Departing Like Rivers varázsvilága még mindig legérdekesebb 2021-es élmény, és július óta semmit sem kopott, maradt az újra-újra rácsodálkozás. Emeka Ogboh (street)field recordings-techno zsongás kollázsa joggal van az élen, mint a Quixosis elborult ecuadori inverzninja indiántripje is. Az EP / Single szekcióban Black Merlin elegáns elsősége a Scape One két negyedórás verziójával imponáló. Dobogós még Jinjé old school és experimental elemekkel megzavart technója az Open Unityn, és a  Detroit's Filthiest house/breakbeat ütemei.
