ETHICAL FABRIC DISCUSSION – TENCEL
TENCEL® has gained favorable acceptance within the mainstream fashion industry and also in the eco-fashion industry as being a natural fiber that has a flattering drape and is soft, luxurious, breathable, naturally wrinkle-resistant, and environmentally sustainable.
Most people assume that there are two broad categories of fibers: natural fibers like cotton, wool, hemp, ramie and silk; and artificial fibers synthesized out of petrochemicals like nylon and polyester. Lyocell falls somewhere in-between. The raw material for lyocell is cellulose from wood pulp which is broken down chemically in a soupy sludge that is squirted out a showerhead spinneret and reformed as fibers. Lyocell is more accurately described as a recovered or regenerated fiber

Tencel is also made from eucalyptus trees, which don’t require pesticides or irrigation, according to the Natural Resource Defence Council. Lenzing says it can grow enough trees for a ton of Tencel on half an acre of forestland, likely unsuitable for farming. Cotton needs up to five times as much of high quality farmland, according to the NRDC.
The environmental press has often heralded lyocell as a new fiber that represents a milestone in the development of environmentally sustainable textiles. Lyocell is made from cellulose found in wood pulp which has been harvested from tree farms. Cellulose is the natural polymer that makes up the living cells of all vegetation. Tencel is also more environmentally-friendly than other fabrics. It’s produced on a “closed loop system,” in which “99% of the chemicals and solvents used in the process to break down the wood pulp are recovered and recycled with minimal waste and very low emissions. Lyocell uses an amine oxide as a non-toxic solvent which is continually recycled during the production process. Production plant emissions into the air from smokestacks and from wastewater are significantly lower in comparison to many other man-made fiber operations.
The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for lyocell rates the amine oxide solvent used to digest the wood pulp as being non-toxic and about 99% is recovered and recycled during the manufacturing process. Waste products in the air and water from the manufacturing process are minimal and considered harmless. Lyocell fiber is eco-friendly since products made from it can be recycled and lyocell is biodegradable because it is a cellulosic fiber. Products made from lyocell can be recycled, incinerated, or digested in sewage. The fiber will usually degrade completely in just eight days in waste treatment plants.
The process to manufacture lyocell fiber is in fact very nearly a closed loop process in which bleach is not required. Bleach is commonly required in fabric manufacturing, especially for cotton. For this reason, high quality lyocell products contain no free chlorine and are sold as so-called "TCF - products". The European Union awarded this process the Environmental Award 2000 in the category "technology for sustainable developments". There are currently only four manufacturing facilities that produce lyocell fibers: one in the U.S., two in Europe, and one at the Birla Industries plant in India. Processes, including the chemicals that they use for finishing, can vary.

The Downsides
While production of lyocell fibers is generally eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable, the transformation of lyocell fibers into fabric and garments can use many or the same harsh, and even toxic, chemicals and processes used in conventional garments.
Lyocell fiber has a relatively low surface energy, which makes it difficult for dyes to bind to it. Depending upon their ideological leanings, the manufacturing facility might use a variety of chemical processes, enzyme baths, and dye treatments which might, or might not, be eco-friendly. Enzymes are bio-chemicals used to weaken surface hairs on fabrics so they can be removed to prevent excessive pilling. Enzymes do occur in nature and are responsible for the breakdown of leaves and vegetation on the forest floor, for example. This is in keeping with the Lenzing Fibers goal of using low impact chemistry in their fabric manufacturing. The manufacturing of lyocell fiber does have significant environmental and ecological benefits. Most of concern about lyocell comes from the sometimes heavy use of chemicals to turn lyocell fiber into garments. The organisation, however, also notes that wood pulp is often sourced from forests underneath an umbrella environmental organisation which doesn’t hold cutters to very high standards. There’s also little difference in sustainability between Tencel and organic cotton in the long run. From a consumer’s perspective, Tencel is also more expensive. Because of the technology required, it simply costs more to produce, which transfers to shoppers, leading to Tencel’s perception as a luxury fibre.

There has been a tremendous growth in Tencel production and use in the market. Markets other than apparel are noticing Tencel as well. It may have even more lucrative uses in batteries and surgical swabs. While in 2014, the Cotton Board estimated global production at just 243,000 tons (compared to 28.6 million for cotton), many midline retailers, like Bed, Bath & Beyond; H&M; and Uniqlo, have jumped on the trend as well as specialty brands, such as Lululemon and Patagonia, just to name a few.

Small Steps = Big Trails
After such a long last post, I wanted to make this one a little more user-friendly. Even if you can’t afford solar or can’t lobby your legislatures there are still opportunities to conserve. Many small changes amount to a large impact overtime and the majority of what I suggest are easy to implement.
Appliances:
-Make sure that your fridge is set to 37 degrees and your freezer to 3 degrees. Refrigerators can account up to 20% of household electricity use (Ecomall n.d.).
-When you use your dishwasher, allow it to air dry instead of using the dishwasher to dry the dishes. Most dishwasher models allow you to manually shut off the dry function.
-Use energy efficient light bulbs, they last way longer than normal bulbs and use way less energy saving you money in the long run!
Home:
-Lowering your thermostat just two degrees during the winter saves six percent of heating-related CO2 emissions (around 420 pounds of CO2 reduction per year) (Ecomall n.d.). Plus sleep quality is improved when in a colder environment.
-Reduce the amount of time you spend in the shower.
-Use energy efficient appliances whenever possible!
-Use a drying rack for your clothes instead of a dryer. This saves energy and makes your clothes last longer!
These are just a couple of ways that you can reduce your energy footprint without installing a whole new energy system on your roof. Small differences add up and every step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction!

#TextileThursdays :: Where we drop some knowledge about FABRIX ON YA. TENCEL® is a brand name for a fiber which is also called lyocell. It is a sustainable fabric, regenerated from wood cellulose. It is similar in hand to rayon and bamboo, both regenerated fabrics. However, Tencel is one of the most environmentally friendly regenerated fabrics, for several reasons. Tencel fibers are grown sustainably. Unlike rayon and bamboo, Tencel’s supply chain is transparent. It is obtained from eucalyptus trees that are grown on farms—no old growth forests, genetic manipulation, irrigation, or pesticides are used. Tencel eliminates the negative environmental impacts of traditional fiber processing, using new sustainable technologies. Tencel has some distinct advantages over traditional fibers in terms of chemical processing, which can often be extensive and toxic. For example, Rayon manufacturing generates highly polluting air and water emissions, uses catalytic agents containing cobalt or manganese, and creates a strong, unpleasant odor. The chemicals used to produce lyocell fibers are nontoxic. In addition, the cellulose or ground pulp used for Tencel is treated in what is known as a closed loop process in which these solvents are recycled with a recovery rate of 99.5%. The tiny amount of remaining emissions is decomposed in biological purification plants. Because of the nature of the material, the processing never requires bleach. This overall method of manufacturing fabric was awarded the “European Award for the Environment” by the European Union. -- excerpt partially from #ecoMall
