After the Rehearsal (Ingmar Bergman, 1984)
actor/human puppetry and resistance. Has this obvious feeling to it - an off the top of the head, first draft one. But the last fifteen minutes turn proceedings around very poignantly, wishing and hoping and planning to nought.

"Efter repetitionen" (1984) - Ingmar Bergman
Films I've watched in 2022 (135/210)
Just when I thought I couldn't possibly love Ingmar Bergman and Erland Josephson any more than I already do, this film comes into my life.
Erland Josephson plays a Bergman alter ego, a director about to put on his fifth staging of Strindberg's "Ett drömspel", and Bergman's personal script, combined with the deeper understanding of his role that no doubt comes from Josephson's decades long friendship with Bergman, creates such an intimate and beautiful film.
Also, let's not forget Sven Nykvist's cinematography. This film, especially, highlights what an amazing photographer of the quiet, intmate moments he was. His very subtle and organic camera movements follow the actors every move, but not in an obvious and flashy way, he does it in the exact same way your eyes would, if you were in the room, looking at the actors.
