Fernand Iveton at the time of his arrest: the police officers who arrested him deliberately soiled his clothes and disheveled his hair, even though he was always impeccable, surely in order to begin discrediting him in the press
Fernand and Helene Iveton a couple in the algerian revolution part V  : the end of Fernand Iveton
We have seen here the condemnation to death of Fernand Iveton and its consequences. Even in prison, Fernand continues to write letters to Hélène, and Jean Claude also sent a letter from mainland France to President René Coty requesting clemency for his father-in-law. He often talks with Bakri. In one of his notebooks, Fernand has drawn a sickle and hammer. He inscribed the date of his death sentence, November 14, 1956, and is waiting to mark the date he is pardoned. He befriends the prison chaplain, Jules Declerq, who is intrigued by the fact that a European is condemned to death for his independence activities. The chaplain later explained that he wholeheartedly supports Algerian independence but must keep his feelings quiet due to his public role. This doesn't prevent him from offering the prisoner a gift: "Les Misérables." He also promises to visit his wife’s home because Fernand is worried about her, knowing that despite her hiding it from him, she is in significant financial difficulty.
Lawyer Joé Nordmann reports that there are finally petitions and telegrams demanding his clemency from Parisian women, the gas workers of Rue d'Aubervilliers, the CGT section, etc. On the other hand, the press and intellectuals are silent. L'Humanité (the newspaper of the French Communist Party) eventually mentions him but only in a few lines inside the paper. Emmanuel Roblès, a prominent French writer born in Algeria and a close friend of the famous Algerian author Mouloud Feraoun (who would be assassinated on March 15, 1962, along with Education Inspector Max Marchand, Ali Hamoutène, Salah Ould Aoudia, Etienne Basset, and Robert Aymar by the OAS), urged Camus to try to help Fernand Iveton. Camus did nothing, at least publicly.
There is also a letter sent to Guy Mollet for make protest about the torture (authorized, as Massu would say years later to journalist Florence Beaugé, by government members like Max Lejeune and Maurice Bourgès-Maunoury, who visited interrogation centers and encouraged torture, even though these two politicians claimed they had nothing to do with it). On January 14, Bakri is released and hugs his two colleagues before leaving. He is replaced by another prisoner named Zamoun.
Abdelkader Guerroudj, known as Djilali, and Jacqueline Guerroudj are arrested. In an attempt to save Fernand Iveton, Jacqueline confesses her role and confirms that he had no intention of killing anyone. The Battle of Algiers intensifies, with events like the eight-day strike (January 28, 1957 - February 4, 1957), during which the army commits new atrocities to break the strike: forced store openings, looting authorizations, and new arbitrary arrests of Algerians.
A new prisoner, Mohamed ben Hamadi el Haziz, who asks to be called Abdelaziz, arrives. He is an Iraqi who came to Algeria to fight for the revolution. He was captured after being wounded in combat and has just been sentenced to death by the military tribunal. He announces this sentence calmly. Fernand also shares his story with him.
President René Coty receives Fernand Iveton’s three lawyers, as required by French procedure at the time. Before deciding whether to use presidential clemency, the president must listen to the defense lawyers, Albert Smajda, Charles Lainné, and Joe Nordmann, who speak of the parody of justice that is unfortunately common in the military tribunal and the toxic atmosphere. René Coty agrees that the sentence was disproportionate and even acknowledges the courage and certain nobility in Fernand Iveton but stresses that public opinion wants Fernand Iveton’s death and that, given the increasing violence in Algiers, the pieds-noirs will want his head. He also recalls a chilling anecdote from 1917 when, as a young officer, he saw two young French soldiers executed. As one of them was being led to the execution post, the general said to him, "You too, my boy, are dying for France."
Albert Smajda realizes that his client will not be pardoned. Joe Nordmann protests to the president with clear and lucid arguments that this execution will not diminish the will of Algerian revolutionaries to continue fighting and that blind violence solves nothing. He also shares an anecdote: Iveton was insulted by one of the guards, and he retorted that he was in this situation for him. This ensures that Fernand is fighting for an Algeria where there will be equality and happiness for all. Smajda produces a letter signed by Hélène for the president, while Lainné insists that Fernand should be a witness to the torture he endured. Coty says it is indeed disgraceful that he suffered such treatment, but this treatment had already been applied to many activists both before and throughout the Algerian revolution.
On February 6, the Supreme Council of the Judiciary reviews the case again. However, François Mitterrand, the Minister of Justice, is the last to vote before René Coty makes his decision. The man who would later be known as the president who abolished the death penalty in France opposes clemency and favors executions (at least 32 out of 45 executions). He likely does this for political calculation to keep his position and provide guarantees in hopes of securing a post.
On Saturday, Chikhi is freed. He shakes hands with Abdelaziz and hugs Fernand, thanking him for what he did for Algeria. A few hours later, a newcomer named Achouar arrives. He is 20 years old, was arrested during the fighting, and demands prisoner-of-war status. He also shares his story.
Fernand is convinced he will be pardoned. Then, a few days later, while he is sleeping, the guards come and tell him to get up immediately. Abdelaziz understands right away, unlike Achouar, who looks lost. When Fernand understands, he wants to address his cellmates one last time. The guards take him immediately. Despite everything, Fernand stands tall and shouts "Tahia el Djazair" (long live Algeria) as other condemned prisoners do when going to execution. A guard tells him to be quiet and raises his baton to his height. Too late, as other Algerian prisoners, who usually witness the execution and immediately understand what is happening, start shouting, singing in Arabic, singing patriotic songs, others bang the cell walls with their bowls and spoons, and women make youyou. The prisoners do this to accompany the independence militants to death so they do not falter. Soon, other Algerians in the nearby streets, alerted by the noise, join in the chants and youyou. Despite the guards' attempts, the support demonstrations do not weaken. When the clerk asks if Fernand has anything to say, he first asks for pants. Then he says for the clerk to note, "The life of a man, mine, matters little. What matters is Algeria, its future. I am convinced that the friendship between French and Algerians will be restored."
Two other FLN militants, often forgotten, will be executed with him: Mohamed Lakhnèche, known as Ali Chaflala, and Mohamed Ouenouri, known as P'tit Maroc. The three condemned men walk to the guillotine and embrace. One of them says, "Iveton, my brother." Charles Lainné also embraces him and says he is dying because of public opinion. Fernand repeats three times, "Public opinion." Declerq is there and asks if he needs religious assistance. Fernand tries to smile and replies, "No... Freethinker." The guards tie his hands behind his back, and Fernand murmurs that he will die, but Algeria will be independent. The Casbah joins in the cries and patriotic songs. Lainné kneels and prays for Fernand, while Albert Smajda sobs and looks at the wall to avoid seeing what is about to happen.
Despite his support for French Algeria, the executioner, Fernand Meysonnier says that Fernand Iveton shows great courage and almost regrets the task he is about to perform (he would only have such regrets three times in his career of executioner, according to him).
On February 11, 1957, at 5:10 am, Fernand Iveton is guillotined more by "the spirit of the times than by his act," to use Albert Camus's words, and his execution is condemned by Jean-Paul Sartre in "Les Temps Modernes" in 1958: "We are all murderers."
The next and final part will be the epilogue. But I must say one thing. When you think that François Mitterrand (and the government in power) made films criticizing the Montagnards of the French Revolution for the guillotine, I find it very misplaced on his part because, as we have just seen, he did far worse than they did.

Stranger Things Book: Darkness In The Edge Of Town

My other metas here
Buy me a ko-fi!
This canon novel tell us Hopper’s past as detective in New York, during the 70s. A self contained thriller-noir novel with non lineal plot (the story goes back and forth between Hopper’s life in 1984 and New York in 1977, and the New York storyline has its own flashbacks/flashforwards). Everything mentioned will appear later.
The story is about a mysterious serial killer who runs a satanic cult, gangs, the FBI and special forces of something… and related to Hawkins lab and Brenner’s experiments. Marked spoilers under the cut, because I’m going to dissect the entire plot. And also, I suspect this novel (plot and characters who manage to be alive by the end) will be related to season 4, so get ready.
Quick note: what we know at this moment about season 4 here.
The story starts in 26th December 1984. Hopper is with El in the cabin. She comments she feels bored because the Party is visiting their families and she cannot talk with them through the walkies. Max is not mentioned in this list, thus confirming they weren’t real friends until season 3.
Hopper realizes despite he is doing all he can, he is not a very good parent to El. He is constantly comparing Eleven and Sara, and giving her Sara’s old stuff (which is not appropriate for El, since she is older and more mature, even with all her lack of social skills).  She doesn’t seems to care.
Tumblr media
Eleven demands Hopper to tell things about his past. She founded the boxes marked as “Vietnam”, “Sara” and “New York”. Hopper chooses New York because is the safest story. Hopper time in Vietnam and “what he did” still haunted him until today.
Tumblr media
Hopper spent 4 years (around age 21/22/23) in the army directly after high school and sent to Vietnam, from 1962 to 1968. He returned to Hawkins, became a cop during 3 years, met Diane in 1969, Sara is born in 1971. Hopper became bored of Hawkins, the family moved to New York when Diane was pregnant (he is around 38-39 years old). Diane became a teacher at Sara’s school.
The story starts on July 4th. Clearly the writers have a problem with July 4th but it is fitting to have a novel featuring Hopper the day of his death.
Picture New York ala Taxi Driver. Hopper, Diane and Sara are a functional family at a birthday party. They live in Brooklyn, in the middle class side. They are doing well but money is a term referenced frequently by both Diane and Hopper. Sara is in a “good” school.
Tumblr media
The lack of funding for the police is also a problem in Hopper’s district.
Picture a classic police-investigator room. Bobby LaVorgna is an Italian and Hopper’s quite benevolent boss. There are 4 more inspectors, not really relevant.
There is a serial killer. He leaves cards with draws with his victims. It is known as “the Son of Sam”, who is a real serial killer.
Hopper is assigned a new partner, Rosario Delgado. She almost doesn’t have physical description (good, I’m so done with male writers and their bouncing tits), only her clothes. She is a Cuban descent, childless, part of a feminist police program to introduce more females in the security corps. Delgado rules a lot. Hopper and Delgado became friends easily.
Tumblr media
I pictured her like this lady.
Eleven roots for her from the beginning. She also points out about how unfair is treated because she is a woman and latina. She asks Hopper very pointing questions about injustice and how is still working today (well, the 80s). Hopper is cornered. Go, girl.
Delgado and Hopper went to investigate the 3rd murdered, Jacob Hoeler. However, special agent Gallup (picture here some pen pusher type) informs them Hoeler was one of them, so the case is not in their hands anymore.
Delgado and Hopper continue to investigate anyway. Hopper goes to Hoeler’s apartment. The apartment is full with folders from the United States Department of Defense (DoD). It’s a trap. Someone breaks in, Hopper follow him, he loses him, and when he returns to the apartment, is empty. Nice move here, Big Bad.
Delgado goes with Hoeler’s landlord. He informs there were suspicious people with military jackets looking for Hoeler’s, and he was going to a church in Manhattan for AA meetings.
Leroy Washington, a yunkie black man is interrogated at the station. He informs Hopper about Saint John, a leader who claims to be something like the Antichrist, is reuniting all gang bands from New York under his command, to bring the Apocalypse. He has captured his sister Martha. He was released before Hopper can ask more, but he has one of the killer’s cards.
Diane and Hopper went to watch Star Wars. They fangirl a lot about the ship of Leia y Luke. Awww. Diane finds the card and informs Hopper that the fortune teller of the birthday party talked about them.
Tumblr media
Delgado visits the fortune teller. She is Lisa Sargeson and in real life she is a psychologist/psychiatrist. The cards are called the Zener cards.
Hopper met Leroy and both are captured by Gallup. Gallup makes a deal, Hopper and Leroy will work for them infiltrating in Saint John’s cult.
Leroy introduces him to his sister Martha and other people. They rob a shop (Hopper feels very guilt about this because he has some PTSD from Vietnam and hit the old owner) and went to a stockhouse. There, he met Saint John himself, a guy with sunglasses. He admits Hopper in his cult. Gallup incriminates Hopper in a murder for the plan. He is in search and capture.
Tumblr media
This is how I pictured Martha.
Meanwhile, Delgado talks with Diane. She is the best, she believes in Hopper’s innocence. It is a pity that the marriage was doomed, they could have been an awesome power couple in Hawkins.
Delgado discovers the three victims of the Zener killer are the counselors of the AA meetings. Thus, Lisa Sargeson will be the 4th. Lisa met Saint John at a meeting, and follows him to his stockhouse. Hopper founds her, along with some high secret information from the DoD.
Lisa is killed, she jumped from the roof to her death by her own wish. FUCKING SAINT JOHN HAS POWERS TO CORRUPT PEOPLE TO DO HIS WILL.
Tumblr media
Picture Kilgrave with sunglases and you’ll get the vibes.
Martha was in the cult because she wanted to protect Leroy, who was in gangs since his childhood. Awww. They protected each other. Double awww. She is a fucking badass and helps Hopper to escape.
During the chase, the city burns because there was a blackout set by Saint John and years of resentment from the population explode. They went to Gallup. After, Hopper and Delgado go to Institute Rookwood, were the experiments were held and the only building with light left.
Saint John catches Delgado, as his 5th sacrifice. He was part of the initial part of the MKUltra experiments. HE IS SUBJECT ZERO. Shit. Hopper and Sain John fights, Saint John claims he hears the voice of Him. Him? God? Brenner? The Mind Flayer? Shiiiiit.
Saint John dies, Hopper is reunited with his family, Leroy with Martha, Delgado will work for Gallup in Washington. The book ends with Hopper reading a book to Sara. Sara has less than 1 year of life by now, but noone knows.

Welcome to the past.

early morning - restaurant kitchen

Fictional characters that would get adopted by godmoms
Well Magryn does most of the adopting really, she likes people more but there’s a few Ona picks up as well, so here a (not complete) list of fictional characters that would get their interests, feel free to ask me details on any of those or offer ideas of more interesting people, also important to note that those are the main ‘adopted’ people of their show/book/movies but people close to them also get lowkey taken into the fold
- Elementary, Sherlock, Joan and Kitty, because justice, interesting approach to cases and interesting experiments - The Librarians, all the LiTs either Jenkins orchestrated it or Magryn took one look at Ezekiel Jones, master thief who donates all he steals and decided he was hers - Leverage, Parker because thief and Hardison because look at those skills he has - Lucifer, Maze who gets some fascinating growth and Linda who brings so much of that out of everyone else (also Trixie and Ella after meeting them just once cause they're impossible not to love) - Dirk Gently, most of the blackwing subjects but especially Dirk who stumbles through life from one interesting thing to the next, and the Rowdy 3 living embodiment of chaos that they are - Black Sails, Silver, Max and Rackham who are all tricky little things who talk their way out of trouble (or try to anyway) - The Umbrella Academy, on different levels, all of the disaster kids - Highlander, Methos (though by now he's more of a little brother to them, old as he is) - Sky High, Layla, rare one from Ona, because plant girl who won't stand for your unfair rules - The Visitor from the Future, the Visitor, he means well but he's a chaos magnet - Good Omens, as explained in this post - The Magicians, mostly Julia and Penny but almost everyone else over time, and Ona likes the nature kids - Arsène Lupin, he's a thief who helps people and makes fun of the people after him in the press, come on - Megamind, because PRESENTATION and most of his 'evil' is lowkey chaos - Wynonna Earp, Wynonna and Jeremy both qualify, trouble magnets - Mr Right, Francis and Martha, the hitman who kill the people who hire hire and the new girlfriend surprisingly ok with that, dorks the both of them - Da Vinci's Inquest, Dominic, who is all for helping people and has a problem with authority - The Addams Family, all of them, they're creepy and they're kooky and an actually good family - Good Behavior, Letty and Javier, who are both trying to do better but are still a thief and a hitman - Legends of Tomorrow, disaster team is a disaster pack, disaster time travelers that mean well is a thing apparently - Inspector Rex, they're both way too invested in what happens to that dog, he's such a good boy - The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond to a point, so much trickery in his plots, but mostly Eugénie and Louise cause running away together like they do - Psych, because there has to be a reason Shawn and Gus are that lucky and still alive - The Road to El Dorado, pretending to be gods? yeah
plenty more to be found out there, including a whole bunch of kids/descendants of Thomas (Magryn’s champion, longest she ever kept a servant and well he got around quite a bit in 140 years and before he died too so... )
