Testo’s, Bridgeport, CT
Tumblr media
My parents brought me sandwiches from Testo’s in Bridgeport, CT this weekend and I realized I’d never posted about the restaurant or their food here.
Testo’s “was” a legendary Connecticut restaurant for folks “in the know” that closed at the end of 2022, selling the land to be developed as a high rise, supposedly. A classic blue collar hangout, where carpenters, electricians, plumbers and painters all went to unwind, it was the “Cheers” of local contractors. My dad included. At the bar on Saturdays you could get massive $5 roast beef and roast pork sandwiches till they ran out, sometimes as early as 1pm...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the most pillowy Portuguese rolls you could imagine, no less!
Their tripe was some of the best we’ve had anywhere in the world...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bowls of housemade hot peppers and pickled onions littered the bar...
Tumblr media
Drinks were stiff and cheap, the pours were generous.
Testo’s was a secret spot for those in the know and they will be sorely missed...
Tumblr media
However, it’s not all doom and gloom as Testo’s always maintained a second, less frequented location, a “pizzeria”, which is still open. This is where my folks went on Saturday as they now sell these famous sandwiches and tripe soup. And I’m happy to report the food is just as good as at the “original”, even is it was takeout for us. Now looking forward to sitting down and eating there soon!

Johnnie Beattie, one of our best loved comedian/actor’s was born November 9th 1926 in Govan.
Johnny entertained Scotland since before I was but a glint in my auld man’s eye, in a career spanning 63 years, he worked as a comedian, singer, television games show host, after-dinner speaker, master of ceremonies and as an actor on stage, screen and television: quite an accomplishment for someone who left school aged 16 to begin work as an apprentice electrician at Fairfield’s shipyard in his native Govan.
After leaving St Gerard’s High School in Govan he joined the nearby dockyards in an apprenticeship, he got involved with amateur dramatics, and by the mid-1950s he had become a stand-up comedian and never looked back.
By the 60’s he had his own Saturday night spot on the BBC with Johnny Beattie’s Saturday Night Show, which featured him playing many different colourful characters, including his alter ego “Glaikit O'Toole”. My own mum loved his quiz show on STV, Now You See It, where I think the jackpot prize was £500! Johnny has also done some acting and of course one of the shows is that old Scottish favourite Taggart, and on the big screen in The Big Man. On the set of Scotch and Wry he struck up a friendship with Gregor Fisher and went on to appear along side him in Rab C Nesbitt.
More recently Johnny played Malcolm Hamilton in the Scottish soap opera River City, a role which he had starred in since the show began in 2002.
Beattie has also had a couple of hit songs in Scotland, including the brilliant Glasgow Rap, he is happily enjoying his retirement after leaving the aforementioned River City in 2015 after 13 years.
He also gave time to charitable causes and raised thousands of pounds for charities; the most notable of these were St Margaret of Scotland Hospice in Clydebank, the Scottish Show business Benevolent Fund and Friends of Winter Gardens in Rothesay, he was also president of the Scottish Music Hall Society – a role he held for many years.
I love this wee anecdote from the man, he tells the story of how he  was standing outside the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr in 1952….Suddenly, he was spotted by a wee wifey, who then approached him.
“It’s you! It’s definitely you.” “Yes, well, it is.” “Ah jist knew it was you.” “Yes, and you’re right. It’s me.” At this point,  Johnny said he took on a satisfied air, and prepared to sign an autograph. “Aye, I knew it was you,” added the wifey. “You were supposed to dae my windaes last week and you never showed up. Where the hell wur ye?”
At 93 Johnnie Beattie’s health was fading and he was admitted to the St Margaret’s Hospice in Clydebank where he died on 9th July 2020.

What Does a Builder Do on a Construction Site?
Have you ever wondered what a builder does on a construction site? Builders play a critical role in bringing architectural plans to life and turning empty plots of land into functional buildings. In this article, we will explore the responsibilities and tasks of a builder on a construction site.
From project coordination and team management to overseeing construction activities, let's delve into the essential roles that builders Fairfield perform to ensure successful construction projects.
Project Planning and Coordination
Before any construction work begins, builders are involved in project planning and coordination. They work closely with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and develop a construction plan.
Builders oversee the scheduling, budgeting, and procurement processes, ensuring that all necessary resources and permits are in place before construction commences. Effective project planning lays a solid foundation for a successful construction project.
Team Management and Supervision
Builders are responsible for managing and supervising the construction team on site. They hire and coordinate various tradespeople, such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and masons. Builders ensure that all workers follow safety protocols, adhere to building codes, and meet quality standards.
Effective team management and supervision contribute to the smooth execution of construction activities and the timely completion of the project.
Reading and Interpreting Blueprints
A crucial aspect of a builder's role is the ability to read and interpret architectural blueprints. Builders must understand the technical drawings and specifications provided by architects to ensure accurate construction.
Tumblr media
They use their knowledge of construction methods and materials to determine the best approach for implementing the design. Through their expertise in blueprint reading, builders Fairfield can effectively translate the vision of the architect into tangible structures.
Construction Activities and Techniques
Builders are actively involved in the actual construction activities on site. They oversee the excavation, foundation laying, framing, roofing, electrical and plumbing installation, and other essential construction tasks.
Builders ensure that construction work is carried out according to the project plan and industry standards. They closely monitor progress, address any issues that arise, and make necessary adjustments to ensure the smooth flow of construction activities.
Quality Control and Inspections
Maintaining quality standards is a vital aspect of a builder's responsibilities. Builders conduct regular inspections to ensure that construction work meets the required quality criteria. They check for structural integrity, proper installation of fixtures, compliance with building codes, and adherence to safety regulations.
By implementing quality control measures, builders ensure that the final product is safe, durable, and meets the expectations of clients and regulatory authorities.
Problem Solving and Troubleshooting
During the construction process, builders often face unexpected challenges and problems. Builders use their expertise and problem-solving skills to address issues promptly and efficiently.
They collaborate with the construction team to find effective solutions, maintain project timelines, and minimise disruptions. By being proactive and resourceful, builders keep construction projects on track and overcome obstacles that may arise.
Communication and Client Relations
Effective communication is crucial for a builder's success on a construction site. Builders regularly interact with clients, architects, subcontractors, and other stakeholders involved in the project.
They provide progress updates, address concerns, and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Builders establish good working relationships with clients, building trust and maintaining client satisfaction throughout the construction process.
Conclusion:
Builders play a pivotal role in the construction industry, overseeing every aspect of a construction project from start to finish. From project planning and coordination to team management, construction activities, quality control, and troubleshooting, builders Fairfield are essential for the successful execution of construction projects.
Their expertise, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills contribute to the timely completion of structures that meet the highest quality standards. The next time you see a construction site, you'll have a better understanding of the integral role that builders play in bringing architectural plans to life and creating the buildings we rely on every day.

scandalous star: cary grant - an analysis
"No money, no material reward is comparable to the praise, the shouts of well done and accompanying pat on the back of one's fellowman. Applause and laughter in the theater have a similar effect; and sometimes I stand in a quiet darkened corner, and listen to that huge audience roaring with laughter at something I've done, the tilt of my head or a facial reaction, and joy seems to burst within me." - Cary Grant
Cary Grant was the quintessential leading man, full of debonair charm, poise, sophistication and matinee level good looks. However, looks could be deceiving. Underneath it all he was a perpetually depressed, fussy, stingy, insecure man. A self-professed “stammeringly shy” boy in the presence of girls, he married thrice and found himself making love on the screen in front of millions of people, the image of urbane wealth and leisure. Yet the future actor came from extreme poverty, scraping for a living like a character in a Dickens novel. He has spent most of his career trying to forget his childhood, to erase the poverty of his upbringing by a relentless pursuit of wealth (Capricorn sun), and to overcome the paralyzing fear of women instilled in him by his doting but mentally unstable mother (Aquarius moon). Some say Grant as an ambitious young immigrant vaudevillian who reinvented himself so thoroughly, he ended up denying his true self in a homophobic industry. Who knows. At any rate, his place in the annals of Hollywood is all but secured.
Tumblr media
Cary Grant, according to astrotheme, was a Capricorn sun and Aquarius moon. Born Archibald Leach in the dockyards of Bristol, England, he was the son of working class parents, Elias, an alcoholic tailors’ presser, and Elsie, a homemaker. The Leaches lived in despair and poverty, in Elias’ mother’s house. Archie didn't get on with his grandmother, who was a cold woman. When Archie (as he was called) was 9, his father had his mother committed to Fishponds mental institution. Family members told Archie she had gone to a seaside resort, but gave no other explanation or anticipated date for her return. In March 1918, Archie was expelled from Fairfield Secondary School in Bristol. It became increasingly clear that his mom wasn't coming back. Father and son shared a room, but the father was often away: Elias took up with his mistress and an illegitimate son. It was Archie's habit to find entertainment in the music halls. He even got a part-time job working for an electrician who did repairs to their lights. That's how Archie met Bob Pender, who led a troupe of comic acrobats. At 14, he joined the Pender troupe, lived with their family in Brixton, and learned the tough trade of knockabout comedy. He could do all manner of tricky leaps and stunts, and he could make people laugh. In 1920, when he was 16, he went with the Penders to New York. He returned to England in 1923 and broke into the theater, playing modest roles in musical comedies. Spotted on the London stage, he was hired for an Oscar Hammerstein musical on Broadway called Golden Dawn.
Cut to 1931. By now, Archie has had some speaking parts in legitimate theater and was cast in a lackluster play called “Nikki”. On the recommendation of the play’s star, Fay Wray, Leach went out to California and got a screen test at Paramount. They offered him a contract, but they said that "Archie Leach" wasn't going to cut it. So he sat down with Wray. and they came up with something short and American: Cary Grant. By the end of 1935, he had made 20 pictures, and he had starred with Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, Tallulah Bankhead and Mae West in scenes where they certainly got the look in his eyes. At the age of 31, Grant learned the truth: that his father had had his mother confined in a Bristol lunatic asylum – the cheapest and worst of the two in town – and had never told Archie. Elsie Leach had had bouts of depression as a young woman (an earlier son had died two days short of his first birthday), but no one who knew her thought she was crazy. In the asylum she had asked steadily to be let out. Her absence probably assisted Elias's love affairs. Once freed (immediately after her husband's death), Elsie lived a quiet life in Bristol until her death in 1973 at the age of 95. Grant had persistently urged her to live with him in America. She declined – perhaps any notion of going away again made her afraid. He visited her in Bristol often. They kept up a close, loving correspondence.
Grant did many films during his contract with Paramount but with a few exceptions the movies were unremarkable. When his contract was up, he decided to continue his career as an independent actor. This was a savvy business move that was almost unprecedented at the time. Grant signed contracts with RKO and Columbia that allowed him to choose the projects that he wanted and to work with other studios if he desired. In the 1950s, after Grant had become the wildly successful star he's remembered as today, he sought professional help to cope with the lingering emotions over his traumatic childhood. In particular, his failed marriages (he would have five wives total) weighed on him. He tried hypnosis and yoga, among other things.  A first marriage fizzled. Then there were those rumours about his roommateships with film fashion designer Orry-Kelly and actor Randolph Scott.
The debate over whether the Grant was gay, bi or straight has centered for decades around his on-and-off cohabitation with Scott in a beach house in Malibu, which was documented in a famous series of still photographs of them in domestic poses. When Grant married actress Virginia Cherrill in 1934, Scott attempted suicide.  Around this time, Grant threatened to sue gossip columnist Hedda Hopper for implying he wasn’t “normal.’’ Then came Barbara Hutton, a woman he could protect, not a small fierce mother to argue with, but his moodiness and her grandiose lifestyle ruined things. Then came temporary retirement and Betsy Drake, with her introducing him to yoga, psychotherapy, and LSD. But then came Sophia Loren, whom he fell in love with, the troubles of a fading career and that aging image. And then came Dyan Cannon, who found herself, in her words, the companion of a persnickety, obsessed man haunted by his past. Grant retired at 62. His primary reason was so he could focus on raising his only child, Jennifer. 20 years later, he died of a stroke, In the end, the importance of Grant is not in having rivaled great actors, but because his subtle screen presence helps us see how far we are all acting most of the time. And why.
Next week, I’ll talk about another sex symbol, a far happier one; a French version of Marilyn Monroe who was well known for her tousled blonde hair, seductive pout, and many affairs: Libra Brigitte Bardot.

Overall personality snapshot: For someone who was so friendly and up-front, he was a remarkably private, self-contained and independent soul. One of his challenges in life was to figure out how he could reconcile his desire to rewrite the rules with his strong belief in the rule of law. When he brought these contradictory sides together, he was self-disciplined, self-motivated and a great forward-planner with good business sense, administrative skills and a detached, ethical purpose to all his activities. His clear-headed, logical approach to any enterprise he undertook, along with his willingness to learn from his mistakes, inspired confidence and respect in friends and colleagues. He was objective and capable of confronting problems and difficulties head on, which made him a powerful ally and a formidable opponent. There was a stylish dignity and grace about his approach which, coupled with his insightful wit, made him a respected authority in his field and amongst his friends. Both ambitious and modest, he sought to get to the top of whatever mountain has caught his idealistic imagination, but never at the expense of his humanitarian ideals.
Whilst he was deeply egalitarian in temperament, he knew to use his power effectively, and he thought to himself ‘someone’s got to do it’ – ‘it’ being managing things successfully from the top. Having scaled the heights, however, he could be self-effacing about his achievements. He had a strong sense of duty and moral obligation towards his fellow human beings. He wanted to make the world a better place, and are likely to have fairly clear ideas as to how this can be achieved. His intelligence and independent mind-set did not, however, suffer fools gladly, and he resented having to work at things which curb his beliefs and freedom of expression in any way. But he was prepared to work hard with consistent dedication for his ideals. To this end, he could be drawn to those skills and professions that will make a practical difference to the world, be they in the sphere of politics, economics, academia, or in the humanities such as literature, history, psychology and counselling. In the creative arts, once he overcame his reticence about contacting and expressing your insights and emotions, he could have been a profoundly poetic soul, encapsulating the essence of people and ideas in clear, elegant words, painting, dance or music.
He was extremely attractive and had a warm and charming nature. His features were refined, his bones delicate and his skin fair. His movements were very graceful. His thought processes were methodical and on the conservative side. His mind was rational, cool and calculating, and his memory and logic were very good. The whole business of acquiring wealth and status was important to him. He was efficient and wanted to have enough time to plan his work so that he got it right the first time. He needed to be able to express his natural exuberance and enthusiasm for life in his work. He was ambitious without being ruthless. He became deeply involved in his work, wanting to work at the highest level. In fact, his professional life may have become so demanding that it left little time for recreation. In any case, work and leisure was indivisible, especially with his work being artistic or creative. He was naturally compassionate, humane and sympathetic towards others. His good humour and easy-going ways permeated his entire personality, but he needed to counteract the restless and indecisive elements within him. At times, he could also be just a little unreliable, extravagant and self-indulgent. He may have had problems defining his objectives and accepting responsibilities. However, once he did find a goal to work towards, the sky is the limit considering the vast resources that he had at his disposal.
He had an original mind and used every skill he possessed to gain control of his affairs. He found it hard to let go of the past, and it would have been good if he did so that he could grow. He was willing to tolerate austerity for as long as it was justified. He respected institutions for as long as they served his purpose. He had the ability to judge what was viable or important. He belonged to a generation with fiery enthusiasm for new and innovative ideas and concepts. Rejecting the past and its mistakes, he sought new ideals and people to believe in. As a member of this generation, he felt restless and adventurous, and was attracted towards foreign people, places and cultures. He was part of an emotionally sensitive generation that was extremely conscious of the domestic environment and the atmosphere surrounding their home place and home country. In fact, he could be quite nostalgic about his homeland, religion and traditions, often seeing them in a romantic light. He felt a degree of escapism from everyday reality, and was very sensitive to the moods of those around him. Cary Grant embodied all of these Cancer Neptunian ideals, dropping acid 100 times to get over his mommy issues. As a Gemini Plutonian, he was mentally restless and willing to examine and change old doctrines, ideas and ways of thinking. As a member of this generation, he showed an enormous amount of mental vitality, originality and perception. Traditional customs and taboos were examined and rejected for newer and more original ways of doing things. As opportunities with education expanded, he questioned more and learned more.
Love/sex life: He was probably the least physical and most idealistic of all the Mars in Aquarius lovers. Most of the time, he tried to keep the bodily realities of sex at a safe distance and approached it in an abstract, intellectual fashion. This didn’t mean he was not capable of the occasional lighting raid into the erotic jungle. Actually, he could be a very adventurous and daring lover, eager for the thrill of the chase, just as long as the chase didn’t lead to anything that might restrict his independence. Commitment was never an easy choice for him. This is not to say that he had no desire to settle down. The ideal of a singular, transcendent love was quite appealing to him. Actually, he liked the idea of marriage so much that he did it five times. Of course, many felt that his most important relationship was with Randolph Scott, the handsome leading man with whom he shared a home for many years. However, his own sexual passions were so quickly spent and so easily diverted both by new loves and new ideas, that getting him to focus on one relationship was very difficult. He needed a partner who could love him for his independence, someone who saw how refreshing and thrilling a lover he was and understands that he was well worth the effort it takes to hold his attention.
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Virgo
Lilith: Aquarius
Vertex: Taurus
Fortune: Libra
East Point: Scorpio
His North Node in Virgo dictated that his tendency to dream and be disorganized needed to be tempered by developing more practical and down-to-earth attitudes. His Lilith in Aquarius ensured that he was attracted to women who were maverick self-creations of pure raw awesome, making others around them up their game. His Vertex in Taurus, 8th house dictated that he had a sensual love of natural resources and a lust for precious possessions. His inner senses were ignited by interacting with and transforming material things in an artistic, dignified, and elegant way. He had an internal yearning for an inseparable union with and total commitment from another, come what may. This need was so intense that he may have fantasized all manner of unspeakable actions and reactions if the final dream, once attained, was even threatened. The dark side was that when the reality of our partner did not fit this model (and it rarely did totally) he had a difficult time adjusting if faced with a breach of contract of any sort. Once badly hurt there was a tendency to become jaded and guarded in future relationships, thereby passing up the opportunity to explore interactions which might just have fulfilled out his intense needs perfectly. His Part of Fortune in Libra and Part of Spirit in Aries dictated that he needed to find fulfillment in striving to bring equilibrium and harmony to situations. His soul’s purpose was to use his strength and energy to be innovative and creative. East Point in Scorpio dictated that he was more likely to feel the need for self-control, personally identifying with a sense of mastery.
elemental dominance:
air
earth
He was communicative, quick and mentally agile, and he liked to stir things up. He was likely a havoc-seeker on some level. He was oriented more toward thinking than feeling. He carried information and the seeds of ideas. Out of balance, he lived in his head and could be insensitive to the feelings of others. But at his best, he helped others form connections in all spheres of their daily lives. He was a practical, reliable man and could provide structure and protection. He was oriented toward practical experience and thought in terms of doing rather than thinking, feeling, or imagining. Could be materialistic, unimaginative, and resistant to change. But at his best, he provided the practical resources, analysis, and leadership to make dreams come true.
modality dominance:
cardinal
He was happiest when he was doing anything new, and he loved to begin new ventures. He enjoyed the challenge of claiming territory. He tended to be an initiator—and a bit territorial as well. Also, he had a tendency to start more things than she could possibly finish.

Short journeys, traveling within his own country were themes throughout his life; his immediate environment, and relationships with his siblings, neighbours and friends were of importance. The way his mental processes operated, as well as the manner and style in which he communicated was emphasized in his life. As such, much was revealed about his schooling and childhood and adolescence. The domestic arena and the home were also emphasized. By extension, the influence of the family he was born into, and the parents that raised him, in particular his father, as well as his personal and private life was of paramount importance to him. The material side of life including money and finances, income and expenditure, and worldly goods was emphasized in his life. Also the areas of innate resources, such as his self-worth, feelings and emotions were paramount in his life. What he considered her personal security and what he desired was also paramount.

He believed in the fact that lessons in life were sometimes harsh, that structure and foundation was a great issue in his life, and he had to be taught through through experience what he needed in order to grow. He paid attention to limitations he had and had to learn the rules of the game in this physical reality. He tended to have a practical, prudent outlook. He also likely held rigid beliefs. He had vitality and creativity, as well as a strong ego and was authoritarian and powerful. He likely had strong leadership qualities, he definitely knew who he was, and he had tremendous will. He met challenges and believed in expanding his life. He was defined by his inner world; by his emotional reactions to situations, how emotions flowed through him, motivating and compelling him—or limiting him and holding his back. He held great capacity to become a part of the whole rather than attempting to master the parts. He wanted to become whatever it is that he sought.

He was an original thinker, often eccentric, who prized individuality and freedom above all else. His compassion, while genuine, rose from the intellect rather than the heart. He was hard to figure out because he was so often a paradox. He was patient but impatient; a nonconformist who conformed when it suited him; rebellious but peace-loving; stubborn and yet compliant when he wanted to be.  He chafed at the restrictions placed upon him by society and sought to follow his own path. He was a serious-minded person who often seemed aloof and tightly in control of his emotions and her personal domain. Even as a youngster, there was a mature air about him, as if he was born with a profound core that few outsiders ever see. He was easily impressed by outward signs of success, but was interested less in money than in the power that money represents. He was a true worker—industrious, efficient, and disciplined. His innate common sense gave her the ability to plan ahead and to work out practical ways of approaching goals. More often than not, he succeeded at whatever he set out to do. He possessed a quiet dignity that was unmistakable. He sought the truth, expressed it as he saw it—and didn’t care if anyone else agreed with him. He saw the large picture of any issue and couldn’t be bothered with the mundane details. He was always outspoken and likely couldn’t understand why other people weren’t as candid. After all, what was there to hide? He loved his freedom and chafed at any restrictions.

Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, England, to Elsie Maria (Kingdon) and Elias James Leach, who worked in a factory. His early years in Bristol would have been an ordinary lower-middle-class childhood, except for one extraordinary event. At age nine, he came home from school one day and was told his mother had gone off to a seaside resort. However, the real truth was that she had been placed in a mental institution, where she would remain for years, and he was never told about it (he would not see his mother again until he was in his late 20s). He left school at age 14, lying about his age and forging his father's signature on a letter to join Bob Pender's troupe of knockabout comedians. He learned pantomime as well as acrobatics as he toured with the Pender troupe in the English provinces, picked up a Cockney accent in the music halls in London, and then in July 1920, was one of the eight Pender boys selected to go to the United States. Their show on Broadway, "Good Times", ran for 456 performances, giving Grant time to acclimatize. He would stay in America. Mae West wanted Grant for She Done Him Wrong (1933) because she saw his combination of virility, sexuality and the aura and bearing of a gentleman. Grant was young enough to begin the new career of fatherhood when he stopped making movies at age 62. One biographer said Grant was alienated by the new realism in the film industry. In the 1950s and early 1960s, he had invented a man-of-the-world persona and a style - "high comedy with polished words". In To Catch a Thief (1955), he and Grace Kelly were allowed to improvise some of the dialogue. They knew what the director, Alfred Hitchcock, wanted to do with a scene, they rehearsed it, put in some clever double entendres that got past the censors, and then the scene was filmed. His biggest box-office success was another Hitchcock 1950s film, North by Northwest (1959) made with Eva Marie Saint since Kelly was by that time Princess of Monaco. Although Grant retired from the screen, he remained active. He accepted a position on the board of directors at Faberge. By all accounts this position was not honorary, as some had assumed. Grant regularly attended meetings and traveled internationally to support them. The position also permitted use of a private plane, which Grant could use to fly to see his daughter wherever her mother Dyan Cannon, was working. He later joined the boards of Hollywood Park, the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle - Hollywood, California), Western Airlines (acquired by Delta Airlines in 1987) and MGM. Grant expressed no interest in making a career comeback. He was in good health until almost the end of his life, when he suffered a mild stroke in October 1984. In his last years, he undertook tours of the United States in a one-man-show, "A Conversation with Cary Grant", in which he would show clips from his films and answer audience questions. On November 29, 1986, Cary Grant died at age 82 of a cerebral hemorrhage in Davenport, Iowa. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Grant the second male star of Golden Age of Hollywood cinema (after Humphrey Bogart). (x)
