I've just had a thought, and I apologise if this has been better articulated before now, but it struck me after seeing [this gif] of Emmrich's introduction. I don't think we ever see that skull glamour again (though it's mentioned in passing dialogue), and I just want to highlight the following.

Emmrich is in a secluded, arguably restricted section of the Necropolis when we meet him (The Shrouded Halls) which implies privacy.

The man is wearing his skull glamour which he doesn't do in any other scene, implying it's not a necessary (and thus purely aesthetic) part of his craft.

He later reveals his desire to be a Lich Lord, which is basically a glorified skeleton.

This leads me to the conclusion that the Veilguard stumble upon Emmrich Volkarin while he's cosplaying and mid-roleplay as a Lich Lord.

I’ve reached that special flavour of mental decay where i’m seriously about to write a crackfic about the Lich Lords of the Grand Necropolis and their one shared, haunted strap-on: The Wailing Wand of Eternal Girth.

Eternal life, you see, is too great a boon for there to be no drawbacks. And the drawback? No dick. Zero cock.

But the Lich Lords? crafty little bitches. They found a workaround. A loophole. A workaround to the loophole. A detachable, magically-sustained schlong, forged deep within the molten crotch-fires of the Thrust Crucible and tempered in holy lube.

Some say if you press it to your ear, you can hear the echoes of long-lost orgasms and a choir of moaning angels harmonizing in E-flat.

Problem is: the mana cost to keep more than one operational would bankrupt even the most depraved necro-economy. So they share. A communal cock. A mystical timeshare phallus.

To gain access, you’ve gotta fill out a 17-page Request for Penetrative Artifact Use and Handling Form, answer a deeply invasive magical questionnaire that screams whenever you lie, and provide a full itinerary of where, when, and in whom the Wand will be going, including diagrams, consent forms, and a post-use cleaning incantation.

Greg from accounting (yes, Lich Greg, who somehow kept his W-2 filing kink into undeath) still has it booked until Thursday. Bastard. Nobody knows what he’s doing with it, but the moaning hasn’t stopped since Tuesday and the walls of the Grand Necropolis are starting to melt.

Now that Emmrich has succeeded in lichdom, he has avoided his biggest fear only to stare into the gaping maw of something much greater--something else which threatens to tear him apart at the seams and swallow him whole. As more grey hairs steadily begin to appear on Rook's head and lines crease her youthful face, he realizes with a start that someday he will be alone.

Forever.

What will happen to him then when faced with the endless mystery of what encompasses eternity? How could it be that he spent so many years searching for her, his perfect bride, only to lose her--the one who understands him, both who he was and who he is now.

Slowly, his mind begins to fray, unraveling, as he falls increasingly out of touch with reality. Of course he doesn't have to lose her. Not completely. Not like how he can only dream of how she smelled, what she tasted like. No, those are reserved for his deepest fantasies where the cracks are filled with burning starlight and the heavenly whispering which swells in his relatively new lich ears. She has always been so beautiful, so perfect, and he will never let her go.

Piece by piece, he begins to feed her forbidden secrets on lichdom, preparing her lovingly for the rite without her knowing until the day he rises with his father’s knife to her back.

For a moment he stops to cherish the last beats of her heart.

"I am sorry, my love", his voice is the last thing she hears as he plunges the knife in, warm blood he wishes he could feel sticking to his wrappings as his teeth nip at her neck as if trying to soothe her writhing.

"You’ll understand and even thank me when we can be together forever."

I’m also going to decide to be very bold here and pspsps at @emmg because I am 99% certain we share the gothic horror manic lichy dream girl view of Emmlich.
