Fire and Ice; Recruiting Tony
Out in the Atlantic Ocean, Tony Stark, in his Iron Man suit, was cutting a pipeline transport with a laser cutter coming from his hand. He then placed a Stark Energy Reactor. It lit up. Iron Man rocketed of the water and flew towards Stark Tower. "You're good on this end. The rest is up to you," Tony announced.
"You disconnected the transition lines? Are we off the grid?" his assistant/girlfriend Pepper Potts responded on the other line.
"Stark Tower is about to become a beacon of self-sustaining clean energy."
"Wow. So maybe our reactor takes over, and it actually works?"
Inside the suit, Pepper's face appeared on his HUD screen. "I assume. Light her up " Iron Man flew to the Stark Tower Building, the power was switched on and the Stark sign lit up.
"How does it look?" Pepper asked.
"Like Christmas, but with more... me."
"Gotta go wider on the public awareness campaign. You need to do some press. I'm in DC tomorrow. I'm working on the zoning for the next three buildings," she told him.
"Pepper, you're killing me. Remember the moment? Enjoy the moment."
"Then get in here and I will."
Tony arrived at his skyscraper penthouse and was in the process of taking off his Iron Man suit through a hi-tech gauntlet of gadgets.
"Sir, Agent Coulson of SHIELD is on the line," JARVIS, his AI,  announced.
"I'm not in. I'm actually out," said, not wanting to talk to SHIELD or anyone.
"Sir, I'm afraid he's insisting."
"Grow a spine, Jarvis. I got a date."
Pepper Potts stared up at the monitors of the reactor device. "Levels are holding steady... I think."
"Of course they are, I was directly involved. Which brings me to my next question: how does it feel to be a genius?"
"Well, ha, I really wouldn't know now, would I?"
"What do you mean? All this came from you."
"No. All this came from that." She pointed to the energy in his chest plate.
"Give yourself some credit, please. Stark Tower is your baby. Give yourself... twelve percent of the credit."
"Twelve percent?"
"An argument can be made for fifteen."
"Twelve percent? For my baby?"
"Well, I did do all the heavy lifting. Literally, I lifted the heavy things. And sorry, but the security snafu? That was on you."
"Oooooh."
"My private elevator…"
"You mean our elevator?"
"Was steaming with sweaty workmen. I'm going to pay for that comment about percentages in some subtle way later, aren't I?"
Pepper poured erself and Tony a glass of champagne. "Not gonna be that subtle," she warned
"I'll tell you what. Next building's gonna say 'Potts' on the tower," Tony tried to placate her.
"On the lease."
"Call your mom, can you bunk over?"
" Sir, the telephone. I'm afraid my protocols are being overwritten," Jarvis interrupted.
"Stark, we need to talk," Coulson stated.
Tony picked up his phone and looked into it at Coulson. "You have reached the life model decoy of Tony Stark, please leave a message," he said, still trying to avoid the agent.
"This is urgent."
"Then leave it urgently."
At that moment the elevator door opened and Coulson appeared. "Security breach. That's on you," he snarked at Pepper.
"Mr. Stark."
"Phil! Come in," Pepper greeted cheerfully.
"Phil? Uh, his first name is Agent," Tony disagreed.
"Come on in, we're celebrating."
"I can't stay"
"Which is why he can't stay."
"We need you to look this over. Soon as possible," Coulson said, holding out a file to Tony.
"I don't like being handed things."
"That's alright, 'cause I love to be handed things. So, let's trade." She pases her glass of champagne to Coulson, takes the file from him, then takes Tony's glass of champagne while passing the file over to Tony. "Thank you."
"Official consulting hours are between eight and five every other Thursday," Tony commented, annoyed they weren't listening to him.
"This isn't a consultation," Coulson argued.
"Is this about The Avengers? Which I...I know nothing about." Pepper tried to deny.
"The Avengers Initiative was scrapped, I thought. And I didn't even qualify," Tony elaborated.
"I didn't know that either."
"Yeah, apparently I'm volatile, self-obsessed, don't play well with others."
"That I did know."
"This isn't about personality profiles anymore."
"Whatever. Miss Potts, got a minute?"
Pepper walked over to Tony who placed the files into his own databases.
"You know, I thought we were having a moment."
"I was having twelve percent of a moment. This seems serious, Phil's pretty shaken."
"How did you notice? Why is he Phil?"
"What is all of this?"
"This is, uh…" Tony expands his arms and different profiles appear in holographic form floating in the air in front of Tony and Pepper. "This."
Screens appear of Captain America in action, the Hulk roaring as he attacks the army at Culver University, and Thor fighting the Destroyer in New Mexico. Another is of Loki and the Tesseract to which Tony and Pepper look at in awe.
"I'm going to take the jet to DC tonight," Pepper said.
"Tomorrow," Tony disagreed.
"You've got homework. You've got a lot of homework."
"Well, what if I didn't?"
"If you didn't?"
"Yeah."
"You mean if you finished?"
Tony nodded.
"Well, um...then." She whispered something in his ear.
Tony gasped naughtily.
Coulson looked away in embarrassment.
"Square deal. It's the last date."
Shekissed him. "Work hard."
As Pepper left with Agent Coulson, Tony grabbed the Tesseract in holograph form, worried.

It was probably stupid to go home, not knowing if Garrett was going to want me back. I couldn’t see him needing me, but he was crazy enough to want to kill me, and it gave me pause. But I wanted clean clothes, and a shower, and something to eat. I wanted the comfort of my own home. I wanted to hold my passport in my hand, and know that if the world stayed completely upside down, I could escape home, into the forests of northern BC, and not worry about anyone coming after me. Of course, once again, I had no way into my apartment. Fortunately, once again, my super was a champ about letting me in. This time, however, he had more to say about my job.
“Did you even know, Annie? Sometimes the grunts don’t know,” he muttered.
“I had no idea, Bob.” It was true. I still didn’t have the details, but I’d known there was a HYDRA infiltration. But we’d never had the chance to figure out how deeply it went. Cecelia Banks was a genius.
“The grunts never know.” He patted me on the shoulder and pushed my door open.
“Thanks, Bob.”
“What are you going to do now?” He asked.
“Good question. I don’t know,” I admitted.
“You let me know if you need anything, sweetie. You’re a good tenant, and good people,” he rested his hand on my arm.
“Thanks, Bob.” I closed my door and went directly to the bathroom. I started running the tub, hot, and full of Epsom salts and bubbles, and poured myself a full tumbler of whiskey. I stripped down and dropped my clothes in the hamper before padding back to the tub, glass in hand. I slipped under the bubbles and sighed. I wasn’t able to let go of everything, but I released a fair amount of tension just letting the heat soak into me. I leaned my head against the tub surround and closed my eyes.
I must have nodded off. I heard a knock on my door, and realized my water had gone cold. I slipped out of the tub and into my bathrobe. I crept to the door as quietly as I could and peered out the peephole. There was no one there, at least, no one I could see. There was no way I was opening the door. I stepped away and went to get dressed.
I made myself a peanut butter sandwich and flopped down to turn on CNN. I wanted to know what all was going on. I kept the volume low, and heard a knock on my door again. This time I ignored it. I heard the door unlatch and open and dropped to the floor in front of my couch.
“Annie, it’s Bob. I have something for you,” he called. I crawled around the living room and came up behind my cracked open door. I peered through the peephole again to make sure he was alone. He was.
“Let me open the door, Bob.” I shut it and unlatched the chain to pull the door open. Bob stepped in, his grey work coat pulled closed. He pulled a gun and holster out and handed it to me.
“This is my service revolver, honey. I’ve been glued to the TV since that first flying ship came down. You need it more than I do.” He dug in his pockets and pulled out a couple of box of bullets.
“Bob, I can’t –“
“Way I see it, kiddo, you have to. You’re not the kind of girl to not be some kind of important. And if you aren’t with the terrorists, it means they’ll be looking for you. My money says you probably have some secrets tucked in your brain that someone would kill to keep quiet. Take the gun. You’re from the Midwest somewhere, right?” He interrupted.
“I’m from western Canada –“
“I’m pretty sure I have your mom’s address in St. Louis on your lease. I’ll forward anything important to you there,” he cut me off again with a wink. “You should really think about going home for a visit until this blows over.”
He shuffled back out the door and disappeared down the hallway. I felt sick. He’d worked for one of the agencies for years, and if he thought I should run, he was probably right. I went to start packing. I pulled out my backpack and carefully picked the stitching out of the big maple leaf badge. I only packed a couple of days worth of clothes, as I had lost my purse in the safe house somewhere, so had only the cash that was stuffed in the mason jar in the back of my baking cupboard to get me anywhere. And considering I’d already raided it once recently, there wasn’t much left. I changed into the same cargo pants and sweatshirt I’d worn the last time I’d be ‘on the run’, hoping for similar luck. It was a moment of weakness, but I really wanted Phil to sweep in and save the day. I wasn’t usually a Disney princess, but this time I really wanted to be rescued.
I grabbed a few things that I couldn’t live without, just in case I wouldn’t be coming back, and tucked them away in an inner pocket in my bag. I slipped my laptop into the padded back panel and zipped it closed. I took a final look around my apartment, mentally saying goodbye to my books. Everything else was replaceable, but the books would be a loss if I couldn’t return. I opened my desk to dig around for my passport, and couldn’t find it. I opened the next drawer and moved the papers in it around, but it wasn’t there either. I double checked the first drawer again and checked my night table. No passport. I knew it hadn’t been in my purse, I’d only used to it to replace the ID that had gone up in the first attack on the Triskelion, and clearly remembered putting it back in my desk. I pulled every single item out of both drawers, but my passport was gone. The small envelope that I kept my Canadian ID in was also missing. Someone was trying to trap me in the USA.
My heart started racing again. I had about forty bucks in cash and no identification. It was going to make a border crossing difficult. I could hear voices in the hall, and what sounded like the crackle of a radio. It stopped right outside my door. I slid everything back into my desk and peered out the peephole. A couple of guys carrying guns in black tactical gear were gesturing to one another. I backed away from the door and headed to the kitchen window. I looked out, but didn’t see anyone watching the window. Whoever they were, like Garrett, they were underestimating me. I slid my window open and hopped onto the fire escape. I climbed down to the alley and walked away from my building as calmly as I could. When I was sure I was clear, I sped up and didn’t look back until I was on the metro on the way toward the bus station.
It was dark in New York City when I got off the bus. I’d bought the ticket for the busiest place I could think of, where I had the best chance of blending into the crowd. It wasn’t until I was halfway there that I thought that I might be able to track down Tony Stark at the Avengers Tower.
I walked into the lobby of the building and approached the security desk.
“Can I help you?” The security guard was old, and his shoulders stooped forward a little. His silver hair was brushed straight back, and he had a big bushy mustache that reminded me of my granddad. I couldn’t help but smile at him.
“I need to see Mr. Stark.”
“It’s 10:30,” he put me off.
“If I know Tony, that means he should just be cranking the stereo in the lab,” I nodded. If he was here, I thought. The guard raised his eyebrows and looked down at the computer screen. He typed something in.
“He would have left a name if he was expecting anyone. There’s no list for tonight.” He shook his head.
“If you could just call up to him?” I implored.
“If you know Mr. Stark, like you say you do, you know he doesn’t like being bothered when he’s working,” the guard typed something else into the computer.
“I do know that,” I said, “but this is kind of an emergency.”
A tall redhead walked off the elevator towards us, talking on the phone.
“No, I’m telling you, this is a total mess. A building was literally destroyed by a helicarrier with one of our new proprietary engines in it, and I’m going to be doing damage control for days about why you have terrorists using your tech. So no, Tony, I am not coming back upstairs,” she sounded flustered, and the hair, coupled with the conversation, made me realize she was Pepper Potts. I wanted to reach out and grab her, but she looked over and saw me standing there and stopped.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Potts, I told her –“
“Who are you?” She interrupted the security guard. Tony was still on the other end of the phone, I could see the timer on the screen counting up airtime.
“Anna Ellis.” If I said it louder than I needed to, it was because I saw that the call was still live. Potts jerked her head away from the phone and glared at me.
“How do I know you’re Anna Ellis?” She demanded.
“Please, Ms. Potts. I don’t have any ID and I have three dollars and ninety-six cents left. I have nowhere else to go.” I wanted to sit down and cry.
“But how do I know you’re who you say you are?” She put the phone down on the counter between us and hit the speaker button. Tony didn’t say a word.
“Tony brought a bunch of art into my office a few weeks ago,” I started.
“Too easy.” They said it in unison.
“The Starry Night was fake, but the Sunflowers were real. The hideous art deco Iron Man print was the real focal point of the room though,” I continued. Potts shook her head, still not convinced.
“He added pages to my Thor scrapbook that wound up having some sort of computer chip embed in them that allowed him to hack the SHIELD servers and discover Agent Coulson was still alive,” I concluded. I had nothing else. Potts went pale.
“Phil Coulson?” She shrieked, “Tony, Phil is alive and you didn’t tell me?” If she’d been able to beat him through the phone, I think she would have. The elevator doors opened and Tony stepped out, then stepped back in. Potts spun around and stalked toward the mirrored doors, practically glowing red with rage.
“Pepper –“
“Oh no you –“
“Pepper, Annie needs me alive if I’m going to help her.” He cut her off and darted around her, pocketing the phone. I was so relieved on seeing him that I slumped down against the security desk and started to cry.

EXCLUSIVE
THE founder of a new political party dedicated to taking the heat out of Australia’s overblown and hideously expensive housing market has said politicians need to be given a “kick up the bum” on the issue.
Sydneysider Andrew Potts, who registered the Affordable Housing Party (AHP) with the Australian Electoral Commission earlier this month, said he knew he had to do something when he was chasing rats out of his own decrepit rental accommodation.
Talking exclusively to news.com.au, Mr Potts, the party’s national convener and lead Senate candidate, said housing affordability was a national issue.
“Australians are spending too much of their income on housing and we’re putting too many eggs in one basket with property investment.”

The party’s policies include:
• Phasing out negative gearing and capital gains discount on investment property sales
• Stopping overseas buyers from buying Australian properties
• Taxing properties left empty by investors
• Cutting down immigration to 70,000 annually
• Banning full time Airbnb properties
• Ending “no fault” evictions for rental properties
The former journalist denied they were radical solutions to soaring house prices pointing to census data that showed in some parts of Sydney one-in-10 properties are “ghost homes” left empty by investors.
“I don’t think it’s a radical idea that housing in Australia should benefit people in Australia and not people who don’t live here and don’t need to own property here.
“There could be up to 300,000 empty properties out there, that’s enough to house every homeless person and person in public housing,” he said.

“The property underneath mine has been empty for over a year. Let’s tax people to force them to be rented out to people who need them.”
Australia has a household-debt-to-income ratio of 190 per cent with banks holding at least 60 per cent of their loan assets directly in housing. Last week news.com.au reported on a Sydney couple who had racked up seven properties between them and were more than $1 million in debt.
Living with a chronic illness that has limited his capacity to save for a deposit, Mr Potts said he had personal experience of how bad Sydney’s housing can be.
“I used to live in a former brothel where clients would still knock on the door and one building was so derelict I could chase rats out of the house without opening the front door.”
Although housing affordability is the mantra of all the major changes, Mr Potts is sceptical their hearts are really in it.
“As many of our elected representatives are property investors themselves they have a vested interest in not fixing the problem.
“Investors have plenty of politicians fighting for their interests; renters and first home buyers need a party fighting for them.”

Co-founder of economics research firm LF Economic, Philip Soos, gave the manifesto the thumbs up if the aim is to make renting more secure and take the heat out of housing prices.
“Despite talk about the Great Australian Dream, home ownership has been falling over the last couple of decades as investment property ownership increases.”
But he warned bringing more properties within reach of first home buyers would see others suffer.
“Everyone wants lower prices but be careful what you wish for as property makes up $7 trillion of our economy.”
Mr Soos said Australia was in a housing bubble with its growth reliant on ever rising housing prices.

“The moment that growth isn’t there that will be difficult for a lot of people and create its own problems through increased unemployment.”
A central pillar of the AHP, the president of which is disaffected former Liberal Member of the Victorian Legislative Council Reg Macey, is a phase out of negative gearing.
This is the ability for owners of multiple homes to offset their losses on one property against their income.
Critics have long said axing negative gearing will simply lead to investors raising rents to make up the shortfall; building more homes is the answer. They point to rent rises between 1985-87 when the Hawke Government briefly axed negative gearing.
Mr Soos doesn’t buy into that theory. “The idea that it increased rents is just not tenable. That story is nowhere near as strong as the industry likes to make out.”
He said rents only went up in Sydney and Perth where there were low vacancy rates and in other capitals it was flat.
There are divided views as to whether axing negative gearing will send rental prices up. Picture: AAP Image/Mick Tsikas.Source:istock
“The problem isn’t supply, it’s under-utilisation and crap policies. We’re in the middle of a massive construction boom yet properties are left vacant when they could be rented out.
“When they’re going up by $50,000-100,000 a year why bother with the hassle of tenants?”
However, top of Mr Soos’ wish list would be bolstering renters’ rights.
“In Germany some families rent the same property their entire lives. That’s completely different to Australia where we have some of the weakest tenancy rights in the West and people can be shuffled around a couple of properties each year.”
Mr Soos also backed the AHP’s call to limit migration, which is similar to entrepreneur Dick Smith’s stance that a 70,000 migrant per year is more sustainable.
“Australia’s been running a Ponzi scheme of 200,000-300,000 net immigrants each year and that’s putting a significant strain on housing and infrastructure.”
Dick Smith has launched a $1 million campaign to reduce immigration. Picture: Mark Kolbe/Getty Images.Source:Getty Images
Mr Potts said advocating for an immigration crack down did not mean the party was on the right.
“With the current rate of growth we need a city the size of Canberra every year to keep up with demand and that’s not sustainable.
“Progressive Australians who oppose rapid population growth for non-racist reasons now have a party to vote for that and are not forced towards One Nation.”
Full time Airbnb properties were also in the party’s sights.
“It’s a huge problem in parts of Europe with whole neighbourhoods with no locals because all the housing is tourist accommodation”.
Despite the small size of the party, Mr Potts said he was hopeful of success at the next federal election. New Senate voting rules that mean people have to tick at least six boxes mean single issue parties with a clear name could attract one of those ticks, he asserts.
“We’d like to achieve an electoral upset that shocks the political establishment on the issue of housing affordability.
“Without that kick up the bum we don’t believe the politicians will ever change.”

Moving Out with Ease: End of Lease Cleaning in Potts Point
Moving out of a rental property can be both an exciting and stressful experience. Whether you're upgrading to a new place or embarking on a new chapter in your life, one thing that remains constant is the need for end-of-lease cleaning. In Potts Point, where the rental market is vibrant and diverse, ensuring that you leave your old place spick and span is essential. This article explores how professional cleaning services in Newcastle, NSW, like That Cleaning Crew, can help you move out with ease.
The Importance of End of Lease Cleaning
When it comes to rented accommodations, the return of your security deposit often depends on the condition in which you leave the property. Landlords and property managers expect tenants to return the property in the same clean and well-maintained state as when they first moved in. Failing to meet these standards can result in deductions from your deposit or even disputes. That's where end-of-lease cleaning comes into play.
End-of-lease cleaning, also known as bond cleaning, is a comprehensive cleaning process designed to leave the property in immaculate condition. It covers everything from cleaning the carpets, wiping down surfaces, and deep-cleaning appliances to ensure the property is ready for the next tenant.
Why Professional Cleaning Services in Newcastle, NSW, Are Essential
While some tenants may attempt to tackle end-of-lease cleaning themselves, it often proves to be a daunting and time-consuming task. Here's why hiring professional cleaning services in Newcastle, NSW, like That Cleaning Crew, is the smart choice:
Expertise: Professional cleaners are trained and experienced in performing end-of-lease cleaning to the highest standards. They know precisely what landlords and property managers look for during inspections.

Equipment and Products: Professional cleaning services have access to specialized equipment and cleaning products that can remove tough stains and grime effectively. This ensures a thorough clean that meets or exceeds the landlord's expectations.
Comprehensive Cleaning: A professional cleaning service will not overlook any detail. They'll clean every nook and cranny, including areas that are often forgotten during DIY cleaning attempts.
Peace of Mind: Knowing that your property will be cleaned to the highest standards gives you peace of mind during a stressful move. You can focus on other aspects of the transition, while the professionals take care of the cleaning.

Fire and Ice: Recruiting Tony
