10 pages.. 10 pages and I have nothing. What am I even supposed to write about? He gave me no list and just told me to finish these before he visits. What would he even want me writing about? Imagination and storytelling aren’t my strong suit, yet I guess this is my irony. The one thing that I haven’t practiced over and over. This is going to be a chore.

Well... I guess that counted as filling this book, but 10 pages of just me questioning the words of a teenager wouldn’t be the most exciting thing in the world… What are the limits here? Does he want full sentences or do bullet points work? I really wished he actually told me what he wanted. 

Maybe I can use this book for concepts. Get my thoughts down and then work from there into something that he would enjoy. Now, what do we have to work with?

He didn’t visit. 

Should have expected that honestly, god that was idiotic to actually believe him. 

Says you tormented him and you expect him to actually want to face you again, like the first visit went so well. At least it gives me more time to actually process this…assignment.

There are some extra books. 5 more than needed if I remember correctly. 5 mistakes, 5 chances to redo… 5 books I can use for myself. But why would I need these extra ones? I have no use for them. I’ll go back to brainstorming

That's all I hear anymore, at least a week of just the sizzling lava to keep me company here. I thought chucking that clock would bring the warden’s attention, but that was for not. Beyond the loss of communication, now time is against my side as well. 

It had to have been at least a day right? No way it couldn’t have been. Yet why hasn’t the warden come back? Meals were at least once a day, so what is taking so long. He should have visited by now. Maybe different measures will get his attention.

I find it harder to pick up the pen every time I fall asleep. I wonder if one day it will be stuck here, unable to even stand up. 

Could I leave? I will one day, inevitably but will the rest of the world allow me? Or will they keep pushing against me until I give the reaction they are looking for just to send me back here. I might follow them then, try not to change their mind because what use is it to change those who are not willing to do so. Or maybe I'm the one who still needs changing, or maybe neither do. If I were given the choice:

I don't want to leave, not yet. 

I’m not ready.

What would await me out there? How much will be different, and how much will be the same? 

The latter half is what keeps me awake really, how much wouldn’t change. Would Sapnap still want to spar with me or simply banter, or just sit around and watch nature with me and George. George.. God what a mess that will be wouldn’t it. Another burnt bridge for a plan I believed in, do I- should I fix these connections? I internally want to say yes, yet I feel the urge to just let it be. Let the sleeping dog lie for what good is it to try and reform what cannot be made. Would creating new connections work? Is that a better approach? 

Good thing I have a long and silent time in order to do so. 

I used to believe obsidian was a sign of adventure, to face one's fears and enter a world unlike those you’ve grown up in, yet this isn’t the same obsidian. The tools made to form your own path and mark your own now a tomb for myself and the land I called my home. To contain instead of release, to wither instead of strengthen. What do you do now with no one by your side. Do whatever you want?

To fear the inhuman isn’t wise. More than 60 percent of the population is some form of inhuman, even if they don’t appear so at first glance. I, a mannequin, Wilbur, part whale and Quackity.. is quackity. However to say what I saw was your typical inhumanoid would be an understatement-

I can scribble it out if needed, or rip the page out! I- Are those footsteps.. No no no- He- The Warden isn’t until later. Don’t let them know. Don’t let them know. 

But things will get worse if I don’t say anything.

I always felt watched, ever since I first made a name for myself. Whether it was from an adoring fan or those parting the way, not wanting to inconvenience me. So I’m not unused to having attention thrusted upon me at any opportune moment, even if I wasn’t trying to be. Though after a few months there started to be this.. presence to say the least. I could never identify who or where this feeling came from, but there was this feeling of.. wrongness. Like how you feel like you are forgetting something, but it’s on the tip of your tongue. It always happened when I was alone or nearly so. I rarely found myself in any form; whether that was doing challenges with Sapnap and George or simply bantering with Callahan and the others. I never liked the quiet, maybe that's just from the manhunts, but the anticipation of waiting for something to happen was never a comfort to me. I’d much rather be the one causing that then be on the receiving end-

When I first realized he was there, I wished I didn’t. Ironic in a way, it was a tournament.. or well more so a duel between me and Techno. The air was crisp but not too cold, the way you imagine August to be before the first chills of October. And even though I lost that day, what made me stop was what I saw while on the ground, exhausted after the final round. To describe him as anything moral would be a lie. He was watching us; watching me, and I’m used to people staring. I'm not the most humanoid creature in existence, but that man. There was something off with him. 

The me back then wouldn’t have remembered anything physical about him other than the innate feeling of deja vu when we made eye contact. And then it clicked and at that moment, I felt myself want to run. But I couldn’t, millions are watching and if I run now then all that attention would be used against me. I bared through the hollow feeling of Techno hauling me up off of the floor and eventually meeting the duel organizer and his crew. And right there was when I saw him. Shorter than me by a few inches with brown eyes and a smile others would see as trustworthy, he had a simple black hoodie with a smiley face, my own merch. It shouldn’t have affected me as much since the event literally had my name plastered over it, but the implications of that sweater did not bode well with me. 

He congratulated Techno and said his condolences with me, saying he was rooting for me the whole time, but the only thing I processed was how it felt like claws were grabbing at me when we shook hands. I was clearly bigger than him, yet it felt like I was miniscule compared to him. As if something was hiding just below his skin and was just waiting for the right opportunity to rip it away from me. His grip was like 10 different hands were digging into my plastic skin and were hooking their claws into me. He told me his name, but I can’t remember it, it feels like static and errors, the kind of noises George would emit after getting severely injured, but he had no scratches on him; no implications of injuries either. I took as swift a leave as I could while also being respectful, but I could not wait to leave that man's sight. 

He never did leave me.

Out of the corner of my eye I could almost see him, and understand why I hated that handshake. His body was stretched, his legs disproportionate to his body, arms almost touching the ground and his hands. His hands looked like three separate pairs of fingers were all melted together on the same base, yet each moving together in sync. Besides the blatant horror that I couldn’t even perceive head on, it was the purple tint to him that really made me double take, not just turning around and questioning why he hasn’t left me alone yet. Purple scales were normal for dragon hybrids, yet his skin had a magenta tint to them. Different spots had dark magenta spots that would blend out with the rest of his pale skin. It appeared in some spots like he was melting as well, unable to withstand the constraints and contortions of his own body in a host too small for their own. 

It was then that I realized why I hate the quiet so much.

For it was his calling card.

The next time I met him was before all the wars and the eventual degradation of the server I once called home. A time before the wars, a time before Tommy, I yearn for those days sometimes, when the prison walls are so bare they allow me to daydream for a long forgotten past. I was chopping wood, taking my diamond axe and skewering the wood with the sharp blade before I heard the sounds of parrots. I was in the middle of an oak forest and the closest jungle wasn’t for another two thousand blocks. I followed the noise until a twig broke behind me and I turned and saw him again. The same creature from the duel. His long torso was bigger than that of the trees and his head brushed against the tallest branches of the trees, leaves falling to the ground, turning to stained glass when they touched his body. He had a smile on his face, one of contempt as he looked down upon me. My first instinct would have been to aim for his arms, but something told me that would have ended badly for me, so I didn’t. I found myself asking who he was and he chuckled, in the way molten lava does and responded “As time would describe itself to history >;}” before going back to smiling down at me. I knew there was more to it but when I turned my head to grab a potion to ready myself, he was already gone. I didn’t want to admit to myself that I’d see him in the reflections of the water, he never did truly.

The last time I saw them was when I was gathering my own supplies in the final battle against them, the heroes of the story. I needed everything I possibly could in order to insure a victory that I would never achieve. I had gotten used to working alone after everyone started leaving each other. I couldn’t trust anyone anymore so what use would the company be anymore. It’s been so long since I’ve seen the figure that I’ve allowed him to slip my mind, and that's when I felt a tap on my shoulder.

I drew my blade, turned around, and there he was.

The dark tinted purple of the portal bounced against his skin and the floor from the other side of the room. His shadow, a kaleidoscope of colors even against the blackstone flooring, almost touched my feet. I wasn’t stupid, I tried banning the creature so many times, but he always broke through, always able to make his way back in, and at that point I didn’t see a reason to try anymore and I let him be. 

I regret that action now. 

He stood by the portal, not moving an inch as his body melted together and reformed as our eye contact never separated. It never felt like he was looking at you. It was like he was looking beyond you at something you didn’t even know existed in the first place. He tilted his head to the side slightly and with a smile too big for his face he asked. “Does the character now want to become the playwright <:} ? Discover a level of self identity that you can never contain ;}”? He giggles like broken glass and as he walks behind the portal frame, and leaves me alone in my thoughts as I clench the cold glass bottle in my non dominant hand. 

I don't want to meet them again. I don't want to see the Man in the Spiral Sweater who only appears when I’m alone, yet where do I go? I am contained within a commissioned cage and all I have is the lava to keep me safe. But it won’t keep him out, it never will. If code couldn’t before why would molten rock do the same. I’m biding my time for I know that he has something  he wants to do to me- but what- why- what could I possibly give to him that I haven't destroyed by my own two hands- Why hasn’t the warden shown up- where is everyone else- how do- “Why, hello there Dream :) “

my robot’s keeper aka a Tidy Fallout: New Vegas AU

my last gift for you! sorry it’s so late. I saw your post about courier Tidy and I had to do something!! I was so inspired!

Tidy could hear the insistent beeps of ED-E behind them, the mechanical whir stuttering every so often. 

“Now is not a great time, ED-E. Keep it together.” 

But they knew how prone the little eyebot was to overheating. Especially in a poorly ventilated and dilapidated building like this one. It didn’t matter how good the scavenging was here, what technical goodies could be found amongst the rubble, if ED-E wasn’t going to make it out with them, then it didn’t matter. 

And Tidy was pretty sure they couldn’t carry a completely powered-down eyebot.

ED-E's beeps sounded pitiful, resigned to its fate. Or Tidy was humanizing the robot a bit too much. Really, anything was possible at this point.

There was a loud clash of something large and metallic hitting the tiled floor up ahead. Fear froze Tidy in their tracks, their ears straining to pick up more sounds and the direction they were coming from. It didn't take long to be rewarded with the thud of footsteps and coarse laughter rolling down the hall, crashing against their body like violent waves on a still beach. Fiends.

ED-E emitted a low, quiet beep as if to spur the courier into action. And the little robot was right, it was move now or move never again. Tidy backed up slowly, corralling ED-E towards the utility closet they passed a few moments before. If they could just hide in there until the Fiends lost interest or moved deeper into the building, they could make a break for it. 

The closet wasn't very large, just enough room for a courier and their robot. But that spelled disaster for ED-E whose cooling fans immediately went into overdrive, rivaling the whoosh of the eyebot flotation devices. The heat generated from ED-E only worsened the situation, even causing Tidy to shed their duster. 

It was clear this was not going to work. They were too noisy for the tiny room right off the main hallway. Tidy didn't even want to think what would happen if the Fiends found them. They definitely weren't the Legion, but Tidy knew trouble when they saw it. It only took a month out of the NCR territory to learn that.

So there was only one thing to do. 

"ED-E, you need to power down."

ED-E beeped back, brushing it off as a joke. The robot knew as much as they did that powering off and then powering on again was never that simple. ED-E might never turn back on. And then where would they be?

"If you overheat, you'll be gone for good. Power down," Tidy paused for emphasis, wondering when exactly ED-E became more of a someone instead of a something. "I promise, I'll bring you back, ED-E."

Tidy waited for what felt like eons, straining to hear the Fiends roaming the building beyond the ambient noises of an eyebot trying to keep itself afloat. Finally, ED-E played its power down tune and slowly lowered to the floor beside the courier, its lights blinking out one by one.

Relief washed over Tidy, but it couldn't replace the fear at being discovered. So they put a protective hand on ED-E's chassis and waited, breath erratic and jaw clenched.

The Fiends had gotten bored and left hours ago, leaving Tidy and ED-E's powerless body alone inside the building. But they still hadn't moved from the utility closet, not because the accommodations were stellar or they were enjoying the peace and quiet, but because Tidy's fears were realized.

ED-E was not powering back on and they were too weak to carry ED-E to safety.

Tidy had often thought about upgrading ED-E. They had planned to slowly learn each module and component that made the robot tick and make improvements as they went along, hardware, firmware, and software. But now it had to be different. Tidy needed to identify the problems, troubleshoot them, and then fix them with what was available nearby. No luxurious workbench or items that could be sourced over time. It had to be here and now.

Tidy sighed knowing that they had a long road ahead of them, but it was worth it for ED-E. 

Besides, they had done it once before in Primm and whatever Tidy knew then as a younger, more inexperienced version of themself couldn’t hold a candle to what they knew and were today.

The passage of time flows differently when troubleshooting. It was too easy to get lost in identifying the problem and finding the correct solution, not because it was fun to “win” and reap the rewards of hours of work, but because no one could anticipate the journey between problem and solution. It was exploration within a set of confines, learning just as much about yourself as you would about the environment and the systems that dwell within. Addicting, but safe. Nothing like exploring the wasteland. 

But this situation was on the other side of the bottle cap. Tidy was working against time. Tidy was working against the notion that the Fiends would come back. Or something worse. But mostly Tidy was working against the feeling that they would have to choose when to abandon ED-E to take care of themself. 

They were on their last bottle of clean water. Only trail mix that was heavy on the pinyon nuts had sustained them. Their eyes felt dry and heavy at the same time. The situation wasn’t looking great.

But they were so close to figuring it out.

A Programmer’s Digest lay open but discarded on Tidy’s lap in favor of their PipBoy. They had successfully downloaded ED-E’s boot logs and while it was not favorable to stare at text on the tiny PipBoy screen, the logs were infinitely more telling than any article or how-to column that any magazine or book could provide. Maybe with the exception of the Eyebot Duraframe users manual, if that even existed.

After multiple attempts at rebooting ED-E, Tidy noticed that it seemed as though ED-E was beginning to power up. Lights flickered, the hard drive and processor both came to life, it even sounded as if it was routing power to its plasma thrusters. But as quickly as the spark had come, it left. And the logs reinforced this theory. Something was preventing ED-E from completely booting up. Was there not enough power? Was it stuck in some recursive algorithm? A boot loop? Or maybe one of the system checks failed?

As Tidy scrolled through log lines, cryptic wording prevented them from understanding everything that occurred. Weird RobCo jargon. Or weird jargon from people who lived 200 years ago. It was anyone’s guess. But it was enough to see the timestamps and to see the designation of each log line - INFO, WARNING, ERROR, FATAL. Like a weird dance, Tidy followed their perceived steps of how each log line designated ERROR or even WARNING came to be.

All of these messages seemed concerning, but not something that ED-E’s software couldn’t recover from. The log file continued, like the software was just moving on, content to resume its boot sequence. Tidy blinked away tiredness and the strain from staring at the screen for far too long. It would be easy to admit defeat here, rest their eyes, rest their mind. But they knew sleep would not come when the mind could still be occupied with possible solutions, so they pushed on.

It was one word they missed on their initial perusal of the log files. FATAL. It would’ve been so easy to find on a terminal, with a keyboard and mouse. But here in the wasteland, in the hollow shell of an old world, Tidy felt lucky for even seeing it at all.

This was the most concrete lead Tidy had seen so far, though the other issues would probably have to be addressed at some point down the road. But they could think about that after realigning ED-E’s plasma thruster. Which was something they had never done before, but could it be harder than plasma weapon maintenance? They were going to find out.

Tidy set to work rummaging around the room to find tools to open ED-E’s chassis. It was apparent that the utility closet they were in was not one for dismantling and repairing delicate machinery. All the screwdrivers that remained were too large for the job, so Tidy settled on trimming down one of their spare bottlecaps using a pair of tin snips they had found in a toolbox. 

It was a delicate process, one that Tidy’s hands were much too shaky for. They could only brace their arm on their bent leg and keep trying because this might be it. Just remove the lower chassis and figure out what a misaligned plasma thruster looks like then figure out how to fix it. That’s all. And don’t lose any screws. Physically or mentally.

One by one, the screws piled up neatly on Tidy’s duster until they were able to shift the rounded metal plate out of its place to reveal ED-E’s innards. They immediately felt elated by the small victory but also disgusted at what they saw. A mess of everything. Tidy was no stranger to seeing the insides of terminals or taking apart their weapons or using the insides of one thing to fix another. But this was something else, clearly designed around things they didn’t understand and maybe the engineers didn’t really understand either. 

But at least the plasma thrusters were clearly labelled 1 and 2. 

They kind of looked like toasters without the chassis flush with their vents. Toasters were familiar. Now it was just a matter of deciding what features number 2 had that number 1 did not. On the outside they looked the same. So that was good, Tidy reasoned. With a few more screws removed, the plasma thruster housings were off and a bunch of warning stickers sat in their place, faded with time but still clearly visible. As if the existence of plasma wasn’t enough of a warning on its own. 

But looking beyond the pale yellow warning signs, it was clearly evident what the problem was. Plasma thruster position 2’s exhaust columns were as straight as ever, a pinnacle of metalwork. Plasma thruster position 1’s exhaust columns were askew, to say the least. No wonder ED-E was prone to overheating. How long had the little eyebot been living this way? 

Tidy grabbed a set of pliers and tried to bend the metal back to its original position. Not as flimsy as they looked apparently. And getting any more forceful might result in broken exhaust columns, a situation Tidy didn’t even want to think about since the end was in sight. Defeat at their own hand was not an option.

But maybe less screws was an option? Removing some screws along the base could allow them to pivot the exhaust columns enough to realign them with the housing. And a well-placed piece of steel wedged between the alignment brackets could secure the new configuration in place, at least temporarily until they could get back to a workbench and Raul’s guidance.

With a rush of adrenaline, Tidy’s hands worked just as fast as their mind to put their plan into place and reset the housing and chassis. They hoped this worked. They didn’t have anything left to give after this. 

After everything was back where it belonged and three extra screws weighed heavily in Tidy’s pocket, they rolled ED-E carefully out into the quiet hallway. They paused to listen again for any signs of life beyond the scuttle of rodents and roaches. Nothing. With a final deep breath, Tidy pressed ED-E’s power cycle button. “This better work.”

Slowly and surely just as it had all the times before, the eyebot began its initialization process. Lights flickered, the processor and hard drive whirred to life, and the plasma thrusters began to calibrate. Tidy held their breath, afraid the outcome of this startup would be like all the other ones. But the plasma thrusters never powered down and neither did the rest of ED-E. After what felt like hours, ED-E played its startup tune. 

Success. 

“ED-E?” 

The eyebot beeped back happily, as if it had just awoken from a nice nap.

S2: IYHO Tournament - A Reflection [Part 1]

Splatoon 2: Ink Your Heart Out Tournament - A Reflection (Full series can be read under this tag)

On 26th May 2018, Malaysia held its first online Splatoon 2 tournament called Ink Your Heart Out. The tournament was organised by a small group of friends in hopes to raise awareness for Splatoon 2 as well as to liven up things in Splatoon Community Malaysia. 

Turf War-- a 4v4 mode in which victory is decided upon which team inked majority of the ground-- was the chosen mode for the tournament to lower the barrier of entry, allowing players both experienced and new to join.  

In the midst of trying to get friends into forming groups for the tourney, I got roped into a team myself and begun a memorable journey that I’d hope to eternalise here:

0) Team Members

slap - The captain of the team (who doesn’t act like captain). If life is an anime, slap is more of a bulliable/butt monkey character of the team where we poke fun of him (in an affectionate manner). Likes drawing holes on the corner. Can be serious when he wants to. Uses Dynamo Roller.

louhai - Enthusiastic Ink Brush user, a social butterfly. His positivity is infectious and inspiring to both his teammates and opponents. His gung-ho attitude makes up for his inexperience; he’s always eager to fight strong opponents as it empowers him to improve his combat skills. All these qualities was why I roped him into the tournament.

Low - Skilled Dualies user, and one of the main reasons I was roped into this team. His participation in something competitive comes as a surprise, but Low is a companion I trust to fight by my side. As a S ranker, his combat skills is honed to the point of being instinctive. Our team’s main slayer.

FreedomTan - Affectionately known as Furi to us. A single registrant who was adopted by our team one week before the tournament. Her inclusion into our team was a blessing in disguise. As another S ranker, her skills greatly supports the team. Uses Octobrush and Clash Blaster.

And then, there’s me. I took one for the team by playing NZap 89. Unlike the others (whose role is to have fun/kill as many as they want), my role was to turf and harass others with Tenta missles. I would like to think of myself as the mediator who balances all, the grandmother who is attune to my team’s feelings, the bridge that connects everyone, the information gatherer, trainer, and a bit of a schemer.

1) How did it started?

It all started with me trying to encourage friends to join, but the ball started rolling when slap invited Low. There were some... complications which will not be addressed here just to be safe, but all was resolved with the blessing of an organiser, and I then joined the team.

With three members on the tow, we needed one more. We invited louhai.

slap was chosen to be captain because Low can’t due to reasons, I’m part of the organising committee (OC) and wanted to give myself some leeway in case I had to help out with the tourney, and louhai have three kids to raise. Admittedly, I’d hoped that him being a captain would also give him some form of responsibility it didn’t.

Almighty Goddess was what slap named our team, West Mountain Tofu was what louhai wanted. Low voted for the former, I changed our team’s name to the latter due to having OC rights, hah.

2) Inner Struggles

In the beginning, team morale was pretty easygoing. slap and louhai were really chill about the tourney, especially with Low and I on team. It’s infuriating but very human.

Aside from Low, each members have their struggles.

slap's major struggle was shaking off skill rust and motivation. The tournament is especially hard on slap as he struggles to shake off the rust on his skills, it’s admirable that he tried but he could never really play Splattershot Pro like he used to. His greatest nemesis isn’t other opponents, but the shadow of his former self... and this affects his motivation. 

louhai’s struggle is his inexperience in the game itself. He shook off his rust easily despite not playing for so long, and using Ink Brush gave him strength as said weapon was inspired by a certain strong Singapore player. The major problem was his gap of knowledge that could have made his life easier, but he makes up for it with his willing-to-learn(-as-long-as-it’s-simple-enough-to-understand) attitude and has high motivation to do so.

My struggle, though, was using NZap 89. As I’m used to weapons that doesn’t require much aiming (Tri-Slosher, Roller, Rapid Blaster), NZap was a pain to use. Fortunately, I played more of a support role... but sometimes, it could take its toll on motivation. 

In my experience, playing a support role means accepting to be an unsung hero. Players will generally be awed at people’s strength, reflex and skill. Everyone wants to be a hero, making high kill counts and shit. In my early tRO experience, everyone wants to be an Emperium breaker so that their names will be broadcasted throughout server when they broke the Emperium. No one gives a shit on support roles because it’s boring when support roles are usually what defends the castle, heals one's wounds, turfs the ground, provides escape routes, or splats someone behind your comrade’s back. 

Yet, sometimes, it’s enough when it’s just one person who knows what you’re doing and believes in you. As such, I appreciated Low’s presence in the team, for he was the only teammate who understood the value of support, and that itself was enough for me to be strong for others.

3) Two Weeks Before Tourney - Making the Gears Turn

It was agreed that everyone really wanted the eshop $20 prizes. So everyone's here to win. Therefore, our goals seems to be aligned!

On that particular month, there were three consecutive weeks (instead of following the usual once a month pattern) of TMNT themed Splatfests, which was a blessing as it gives tons of Super Sea Snails and allows us to train as a team. To explain, one cannot team up with friends in normal Turf War modes (you can be in the same room, but 4v4 match-ups are random), one can only do so during Splatfest. We had a pretty good run on 1st Splatfest, but that only bolsters too much confidence on the other two, prompting one to skip the 2nd Splatfest. 3rd Splatfest practice was bad due to connection error hell.

In order to keep the team on their toes, daily training sessions with other teams were organised two weeks before the tourney.

I had thought that having a routine session may instilled some form of discipline and interest in polishing their skills. It certainly worked on louhai (who would then develop a habit to challenge others PERSONALLY like a shounen anime hero), but not so much on slap (no, his struggles were more personal, and required more reflection on his part). 

We continuously trained with other teams. Ipoh team, GuGu Clan (one of the official tourney participants), MwS. Strategies were changed, limits were tested. I dropped tri-slosher and opted for NZap 89, Low continued honing his dualies skill, slap tried to work off his rust and settled in learning Dynamo Roller, louhai swapped Ink Brush Noveau for Ink Brush.

Beginning was hard, having to work through a team's... dismotivation? It just feels that the team wouldn't budge unless they were told to do so, which was in turn worrisome.

Team practice was exciting, but the constant matches ate into my sleeping time. By the time Wednesday came, I was tired and on the verge of burning out, I came to the point where I thought that maybe I'll just take a break, because I was tired and everyone's probably tired, and I couldn't win this, I couldn't beat their dismotivation.

Turns out that when one gear spins, the other gears spin as well. Because come Thursday, louhai excitedly told he found us a Singapore team to practice with, and slap even used my words of encouragement to him on me, something like polishing skills together. It is unsure whether the latter is saying it out of sarcasm or he felt my efforts indeed, but I took it as a nourishment and fought on.

4) One Week Before Tourney - Gears Connected

Word has it that everyone except one registrant found a team.

On Monday, one of the organizers came to us and ask if it's alright to adopt this single registrant. We agreed. Personally, I feel that this decision set us to a path of victory.

Admittedly, I was worried. There are only 4 prizes, and Spla2n in general is a 4v4 game. If one joins in, there is a chance that one person will not get the prize... but the feeling of not being able to find a team despite their interest is worse, and I thought that if we had to cross that bridge, I would probably give up mine to this newcomer as long as they contributed.

Nevertheless, the inclusion of Freedom gives me more excuse to organize more practice to test out team dynamics, and in terms of motivation and skills, Furi was a firepower to be reckoned with. (P.S. the nickname Furi was derived from my attempts to romanize Freedom’s name into Japanese (Furidomu), it picked up; also doubles as a subtle pun on what a Fury she is). 

However, the inclusion of Furi also lowered slap and louhai's confidence, who thought their skills as inferior. slap turned to the corner more often, and louhai offered to be a sub due to their somewhat similar main weapons (Furi mains Octobrush, louhai mains Ink Brush). Low and I put a stop to those attitude and utilized this opportunity to make slap work hard.

On Tuesday, we trained with MwS. 

On Wednesday, our team also received a wake-up call in the name of Team Avengers, and to be honest, I half expected that. Sapphire is an S ranker, Fishy is brilliant at support, Meizi is an aggressive vanguard. Meanwhile, they have a new member name Maiki but her positioning is top-notched and her aim is true. We had a rocky beginning of losses, only to end with some victories in the end. At this time of writing, I forgot the main reason of our loss. Low reminded me that the missing puzzle was “me”, that I wasn’t in battle until one of our members went to bed... but I vaguely recalled that Low wasn’t in battle either? Or perhaps we had rotate spectates that not all three experienced players are playing together...? Nevertheless, the fact that we won gave us great confidence that the final prize would be ours.

On Thursday, the desire to improve further caused louhai to discover the finer details of gear abilities. Due to his confusion in our attempts to explain re-rolling and add abilities, I wrote him a guide that he never read. I decided to let him stumble his way through the game, because it’s how he learns best.

We trained with Team 7 (who is not in their full power) and LittleSotongs (who is in their full power). The training allowed us to ascertain their skills, and our confidence grew tenfolds more.

On Friday, I took a break from training to attend OceanInk Battle (https://www.twitch.tv/videos/265356637) as a Knife and Banana member.

Saturday was the day of the fateful tournament...

Time Accuracy and Traceability improvements:

Leap Second Support– Windows will now support these occasional 1-second adjustments in a traceable and UTC-compliant manner. What’s a leap second? As the earth’s rotation slows, UTC (an atomic timescale) diverges from mean solar time or astronomical time.  Once UTC has diverged by at most .9 seconds, a Leap Second is inserted to keep UTC in-sync with mean solar time.  Since the practice of inserting leap seconds began in 1972, a leap second has typically occurred every 18 months. Precision Time Protocol– For the highest accuracy environments, you can now improve your time accuracy by leveraging a new time protocol that delivers far more accurate time samples to the endpoint (Windows Server 2019 or Windows 10, host or virtual machine). Software Timestamping– You can now further improve your network time accuracy by eliminating the software delay introduced by the Windows networking stack. Users can clear browsing data, downloads and restart Microsoft Edge by clicking “End session.” Administrators can configure Microsoft Edge to restart after a period of inactivity. For Microsoft Edge kiosk mode running in multi-app assigned access the two kiosk types are (Note the following Microsoft Edge kiosk mode types cannot be setup using the new simplified assigned access configuration page in Windows 10 Settings): Public browsing supports multi-tab browsing and runs InPrivate mode with minimal features available. Known issues The clock & calendar flyout may not appear until bringing up Start or Action Center (and then they will both appear at the same time). We’re progressing in our work on adding dark theme in File Explorer and the Common File Dialog – you’ll notice improvements in this build, although we still have a few things left to do. You may see some unexpectedly light colors in these surfaces when in dark mode and/or dark on dark text. When you upgrade to this build you’ll find that the taskbar flyouts (network, volume, etc) no longer have an acrylic background. When you use the Ease of Access Make Text bigger setting, you might see text clipping issues, or find that text is not increasing in size everywhere. When you set up Microsoft Edge as your kiosk app and configure the start/new tab page URL from assigned access Settings, Microsoft Edge may not get launched with the configured URL. The fix for this issue should be included in the next flight. On Build 17723 (but not Build 18204), you may see the notification count icon overlapping with the extension icon in the Microsoft Edge toolbar when an extension has unread notifications. On Windows 10 in S Mode, launching Office in the Store may fail to launch with an error about a .dll not being designed to run on Windows. The error message is that a .dll “is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again…” Some people have been able to work around this by uninstalling and reinstalling Office from the Store. If that doesn’t work, you can try to install a version of Office not from the Store. When the Narrator Quickstart launches, Scan Mode may not reliably be on by default. We recommend going through the Quickstart with Scan Mode on. To verify that Scan Mode is on, press Caps Lock + Space. When using Scan mode you may experience multiple stops for a single control. An example of this is if you have an image that is also a link. This is something we are actively working on. If the Narrator key is set to just Insert and you attempt to send a Narrator command from a braille display then these commands will not function. As long as the Caps Lock key is a part of the Narrator key mapping then braille functionality will work as designed. There is a known issue in automatic dialog reading where the title of the dialog is being spoken more than once.
