Killing Bites vol. 9
This one has landed, too, and you know what? Compared to the bleh-ness of the previous two volumes this was pretty damn good!
And we all know who is, in part, to thank for that…
FUCK YEAH TAIGA IS BACK. Beefcake is back on the menu!
I wish I could say he’s a new and improved Taiga, but… OK, he now dresses better, and this hair looks much better on him. But he’s still a dumbass, his obsession with Leo is still ridiulously homoerotic (and Leo cheerfully going along with it to manipulate him is hilarious), and going by the look of things he still serves as the walking example of the Worf Effect, poor guy. Seriously, from the preview it seems he might just end up getting his ass kicked by Pure. Pure!!! :D;;
Other things that make this volume pretty great for what it is, is HITOMI, OF COURSE HITOMI but even more surprisingly: Yuuya! Yuuya started the series as one of those token male MCs who might as well not be in the story at all, but he’s evolved over the volumes, and by now I’m actually somewhat invested in him. His issues in general are handled pretty well, and his conflicted feelings re: Hitomi come across well without being too on-the-nose. And Hitomi herself is fun as ever, even if at this point we find her in sort of an antagonist role.
The Pure/Tasuku/Haiji trio is also pretty good. Pure is the sort of character I normally like, but I wasn’t really feeling her until she allied with Yuuya - being attached to someone made her dog nature more relatable (as in, I can map her behavior on normal dog behavior better than when she was out for herself). Tasuku continues to be cool, and Haiji reveals her animal self to be… an ibex, because why the hell not.
And she turns out to have a thing for Hitomi, because of course she does. Place your bets on how soon Hitomi is going to kill her, “she doesn’t kill her” is not an option.
We also have Eruza back in the fray, although again she shares only a very short scene with her brother, boo. I hope well see more of these two together. Until then, though, she’ll have some fun with Tasuku… go Tasuku!
Also, I’m a bit disappointed that it’s taken this series nine(!) volumes to work in hyenas as futanari fodder, but I do applaud that they finally managed to add such a very important bit of worldbuilding. Go, you crazy manga, go.
