365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #57: High Sierra (1941) - dir. Raoul Walsh

High Sierra is a surprisingly underwhelming crime drama starring two of Warner Brothers’ most charismatic actors, Ida Lupino (who received top billing) and Humphrey Bogart in the role that finally made him a leading man after a decade in Hollywood. Bogie plays Roy Earle, a recently pardoned bank robber from Indiana who immediately runs right back to his old crew. He gets in touch with his former heist partners, who send him to California to knock off a ritzy hotel’s safes. The two henchmen on the job, Red (Arthur Kennedy) and Babe (Alan Curtis), don’t have much to offer the enterprise other than muscle, but their pal Marie Garson (Lupino) proves to be the brains of their organization.

Marie is an amalgam of the two character types that Ida Lupino often played: the tough-as-nails bad girl and the wide-eyed, lovesick innocent. You would do better to watch Ladies in Retirement, The Hard Way or Road House for variations on the former, and Moontide, Deep Valley or On Dangerous Ground for the latter. It’s frankly pretty difficult to believe that Marie Garson would completely shed her femme fatale skin the minute that Roy Earle entered the picture - she becomes so sweet and sappy that she insists on taking the stray mutt from their motel with them to the hotel robbery - and the performance is saved only by Lupino’s professionalism. Bogart, meanwhile, was a more interesting villain in the more chilling roles he took on for The Petrified Forest, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Caine Mutiny.

If anything, High Sierra is most fun for viewers who are familiar with the revolving door of Warner Bros. character actors. Besides the aforementioned performers, the cast also includes Joan Leslie (she’s playing a 20-year-old woman and the object of 41-year-old Humphrey Bogart’s affection but she was only 15 during filming... ugh), Henry Hull (he of the marvelously rich voice), Henry Travers (one of my favorite grandfatherly figures from this era), Jerome Cowan (although he doesn’t appear until 10 minutes before the end of the film), Minna Gombell, Barton MacLane, Elisabeth Risdon, Cornel Wilde (sporting a mustache that I assume was meant to make him look older), Donald MacBride, Paul Harvey, Isabel Jewell (I always get a kick out of seeing her), Willie Best, John Eldredge, Erville Alderson, Dorothy Appleby and Maris Wrixon (I just love her name). Sometimes the best enjoyment a moviegoer can have is the sheer pleasure of recognizing and appreciating talented actors.
