S3 Episode 18 Allegiance
Picard is transported into a locked room with Haro an academy cadet, Kova Tholl a philosopher and pacifist and Esoqq, a violent anarchist. Quickly hostilities escalate as Kova and Esoqq butt heads while Picard attempts to keep the peace. Meanwhile a copy of Picard is set on the Enterprise where he arouses the crew's suspicions with his unusual behavior.
Things escalate on the Enterprise and the locked room until Picard refuses to stop playing the game, identifying Haro as one of the individuals currently monitoring them in an experiment. The idea behind this episode is one of identifying unusual circumstances and adapting to them. About not underestimating one’s opponents. The aliens running the experiment on Picard underestimate and pay the price soon becoming trapped on the Enterprise. Picard is returned as well as the other individuals as he cleverly solves the issue and leads the group towards cooperation instead of conflict.

TNG: “Allegiance”
Tumblr media
Captain Picard is abducted and held captive with three other prisoners, so that mysterious aliens can study leadership (or lack thereof) in different forms.  Meanwhile, a replica of Picard is placed on the Enterprise, to test the limits of the crew’s obedience to his authority.
This is a decent “comfort food” episode, as nothing earth-shattering happens while the crew works on two ends of the same puzzle.  Even when you know how it ends, it doesn’t ruin the enjoyment of watching the crew react to the weird fake Picard, or the real Picard displaying the problem-solving skills of a veteran Starfleet officer.  (I’ve always loved that “tapping out the first six prime numbers” bit.  I’m totally using that if I ever get kidnapped by aliens.)
We don’t get to learn much about the aliens responsible for the abductions, which makes it hard to tell if fake Picard is weird because their replication process is faulty or if they’re too weird themselves to get Picard just right.  I tend to lean towards the former, though.  Fake!Picard’s weird quirks all seem designed to provoke reactions that would be useful data in the aliens’ study.  Even the intimate dinner with Doctor Crusher examines how Picard’s rank affects his relationship with Beverly.
I’m a big fan of Esoqq.  This premise necessitates a representative from a committed anarchist society, which in itself is interesting because I don’t think Star Trek had one until now.  He’s designed so that his introduction fills us with apprehension of the kind of lawless, might-makes-right scenario he clearly thrives in.  But he’s genuinely impressed that Picard his visited his planet (perhaps because Picard survived the experience), which flips the script.  Suddenly he stops seeming implacably dangerous and comes across as reasonable, albeit very different.  A guy like this is never going to be Picard’s best friend, but Picard knows how to talk to him without being condescending or judgemental.  It’s one of the things I really admire about Picard.
