In the beloved children’s story by Roald Dahl, the golden ticket holders who won a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory were promised – and experienced – “a world of pure imagination”.

But children hoping for a similar magical experience at a £35-a-head event in Glasgow instead found what their parents described as an “incredibly underwhelming” damp squib.

Some of the children who had travelled from across Scotland and the north of England to Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow ended up in tears. The all-weekend event was abruptly cancelled only halfway through its first day, and police were called as anger grew.

Organisers House of Illuminati promised visitors a “journey filled with wondrous creations and enchanting surprises at every turn” and a day “where dreams come to life”.

The advertised attractions included an “enchanted garden” with giant sweets and an “imagination lab” that promised to transport the viewer into “the realm of creativity”.

But parents expecting the experience to recreate the magic of Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were hugely disappointed.

Visitors said the event took place in a venue that was little more than “an abandoned empty warehouse” sparsely decorated with plastic props, a small bouncy castle and backdrops pinned to walls.

The furious reaction from parents prompted the organisers to close the event midway through Saturday, only hours after it had opened.

Police Scotland confirmed that officers were called to the event at the Box Hub Warehouse in Whiteinch, and said “advice was given” following complaints from unhappy visitors. House of Illuminati published an apology on its Facebook page and promised refunds over the coming days.

Visitor Shirley Bell wrote: “We had tickets for 1.15pm and didn’t even get in. They have shut it down as so many complaints. Apparently a few props and a couple of people dressed up and then wait for a packet a sweets and a wee lolly.

“Kids all dressed up and crying waiting for what they thought was going to be a magical experience. The organisers should be ashamed of themselves.”

Stuart Sinclair, 29, from Douglas, South Lanarkshire, took his two sons and four-year-old daughter to the attraction.

He told the Courier newspaper: “There was a guy wandering around apparently dressed as Willy Wonka but he didn’t seem interested. You then got inside and there were a couple of props and a plastic chocolate thing.

“In the next room, they had test tubes with jelly babies. I said to the kids at least they would get a bag of sweets but they gave them one single sweet each.”

Another parent posted on Facebook: “What an absolute farce, two upset kids. Cowboys.”

Eva Stewart, of East Kilbride, told BBC Scotland: “It was basically advertised as this big massive Willy Wonka experience with optical illusions and big chocolate fountains and sweets.

“But when we got there, it was practically an abandoned, empty warehouse, with hardly anything in it.”

A Facebook group was set up by those left angry and disappointed by the experience.

The Box Hub venue said it had only hired out the space and was not responsible for the exhibition.

Matthew Waterfield, the operations manager, told The Scottish Sun that House of Illuminati approached the venue a few weeks ago with a plan that “sounded great on paper” but “looked incredibly underwhelming”.

He said visitors “were very unhappy with the amount of money House of Illuminati had been charging for admittance”, adding: “Things started to get quite aggressive.”

In a post on Facebook, a House of Illuminati spokesman said: “Today has been a very stressful and frustrating day for many and for that we are truly sorry.

“Unfortunately, at the last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realise we probably should have cancelled first thing this morning instead.

“We fully apologise for what has happened and will be giving full refunds to each and every person that purchased tickets. We planned a fabulous event and it just did not take shape as planned and for that we are truly sorry.”

Glasgow City Council said its trading standards department had received one complaint and people should contact the organiser in the first instance to obtain a refund.

Corinne Day was a British photographer who brought a more documentary look to fashion imagery. At 16 she left school to travel the world. She got a job as a courier and through that she got into modeling. During a flight she met a photographer and followed through. She ended up traveling all over the world as a fashion model. At the time she had a boyfriend who was into film and photography. He taught her how to use a camera and she began taking photographs while traveling. Shortly later her friend suggested she give her photographs to Phil Baker. Later with many recommendations she began taking photos of fashion. Corinne had little experience with color so her photographs were taken in black and white. She brought six photographs to Phil and he published one. From there on her career began to take off and she came across more and more opportunities to publish her photographs.

Corrine was self taught. Her work influenced style and perception of photography in tbe early 1990s and still does. She often included autobiographical elements into her images. She was known for forming long and close relationships with many of her muses including Kate Moss, Rosemary Ferguson, George Clements, Georgina Cooper, Sarah Murray, Tanya Court, and Tara St Hill. This resulted in many candid and intimate portraits. Her first piece of work to be published was photpgrahs of Kate Moss titled “3rd summer of love”. This was published to the face magazine in 1990 and came to be known as grunge. This work grew to be an international style. Following this in 1993 she was asked to photograph Kate Moss and others for the March issue cover shoot and main fashion story. She was commissioned by Alexandra Shulman, a British Vogue editor. This led to her being commissioned for more fashion shoots and eventually led to the publication of her first book “Diary”. This was a personal visual record of her life and friends. The book shows poetic and honest photographs of young lives. 

Two distinct bodies of work are “Diary” and “Tara, Gimpl Fils”. Her work in “Diary” was officially published in 2000. It was exhibited at The Photgraphers Gallery in London in that same year. This was her first solo exhibition and she became known for these images. Her bestfriend Tara was the main figure in Diary. It includes photographs of different events in Taras life from partying, sexual liasions, illness and motherhood. Tara shows different sides of herself in these photographs. Some feelings displayed are fresh, pretty, natural, sad, etc. They all give an understanding to Corinnes aesthic. “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' is a very similar style to her work “Diary”. For these photographs her bestfriend Tara is the main figure used to photograph. These images portray a dark, very realistic life. All her images are very open and give off a strong message. 

In these two bodies of work there are many similarties seen. Both of these use her bestfriend Tara as the main element of the photographs focusing on her different life events. They both show the realistic events of a young person. Her images all feel very free and expressive. Nothing seems staged or fake. To me these images all show the normal life of a young person. Almost all these images in both bodies of work are colorful. 

Although these two bodies of work have a similar style there are some differences as well. “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' photographs all especially focus on her bestfriend Tara. Almost every photo is about her indivually. On the other hand, her work in “Diary” has other focuses. You see pictures of the outdoors and other individuals, not just Tara. Her work in “Diary” can be seen as more joyful where as “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' is more emotional and intimate. I enjoy how she can potray many diffrent messages through her work while keeping the style similar.

Anuragyam Awards 92 Artists and Budding Artists in 4th International Child Art Competition & Exhibition 2023

On 15th June 2023, over 2000 artists around the world participated in the 4th International Child Art Competition & Exhibition organized by Anuragyam, New Delhi, India. It was an online event, which allowed children to showcase their artistic talent without being physically present. Child artists And Senior Artist from various NGOs, trusts, schools, colleges and Organisation in different countries took part in this event, which was an excellent platform for them to nurture their creative skills.

The competition had Open theme for each age group, and the art works were judged based on originality, creativity, and relevance. Many renowned artists and art connoisseurs were invited to judge the competition and select the winners.

Anuragyam recently (30th June, 2023) declared the results of the competition on their YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/@Anuragyam. 92 artists received recognition for their contributions to the competition; 17 mementos were awarded to the winners, and 75 gold medals were given to consolation prize holders.

Business Receipts Surge in Hong Kong's Service Industries, Driven by Tourism and Domestic Demand

  Growth in Major Service Industries

Business receipts in value terms of several major service industries in Hong Kong witnessed significant increases during the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to provisional figures released by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD).   Impressive Increases and Declines Comparing the first quarter of 2023 with the first quarter of 2022, remarkable double-digit increases were recorded in business receipts for the accommodation services (+84.5%), food services (+81.7%), banking (+30.6%), retail (+24.1%), and administrative and support services (+21.9%) industries. However, the transportation (-18.7%), import/export trade (-17.5%), and courier (-12.5%) industries experienced double-digit decreases during the same period.   Analysis by Service Domains Analyzing the data by service domains, the tourism, convention, and exhibition services domain exhibited an astounding year-on-year increase of 400.6% during the same period. On the other hand, the computer and information technology services domain saw a decline of 9.9% year-on-year.  

Quarter-to-Quarter Performance

  Continued Growth and Decreases On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter basis, most major service industries recorded varying degrees of growth in business receipts during the first quarter of 2023 compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. Notably, the accommodation services (+53.4%) and retail (+12.0%) industries experienced double-digit increases. Conversely, the courier industry faced a double-digit decrease of 10.6% during the same period.   Comparing First Quarter 2023 with Fourth Quarter 2022 When comparing the first quarter of 2023 with the fourth quarter of 2022 on a seasonally adjusted basis, the tourism, convention, and exhibition services domain witnessed an impressive increase of 150.3%, while the computer and information technology services domain also saw growth of 5.5%.  

Commentary and Future Outlook

A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Government attributed the improvement in many service industries during the first quarter of 2023 to the strong recovery of inbound tourism and domestic demand. However, the weak external environment continued to impact service industries associated with external trade. Looking ahead, the recovery of inbound tourism and domestic demand is expected to further support domestically-oriented service industries, with additional assistance from the disbursement of consumption vouchers and "Happy Hong Kong" events. I’m lost.

Literally and figuratively, I’m lost. A traveler, “the Courier” he calls himself, took me from the Tavern of Brundisium to the recent dance festival in Genesian Port. I was excited to go, as I’ve heard that our cities share a close enough bond that kajirae like me can visit for special events in the company of the Free.

It was a rare exception to serving my Tavern and, like most recent tragedies, it started so well and with such promise. The festival itself was called The Spring Fling, and as anyone who knows me would know, I do love assonance. It featured, among other compelling activities, an exhibition of dance from across Gor.

And the Man who brought me there, gave me stories from across Gor and beyond. He’s a veteran of one of the mysterious acquisition ships that sail to Counter Earth to get “barbarian girls right from the source” as he put it. He told me tales of Enclaves and RNA, and of weapon-wielding women still worthy of romance.

The dance exhibition was similarly fascinating. Many of the performers won awards and deservedly so. The performances by a girl named Shadow and a boy named Maynad were particularly interesting in how exotic they were. I found myself hoping to one day join the ranks on that stage.

Yet hopes were soon dashed. The Courier took me to a place, I believe it to be an Inn, and then told me to serve a Free Woman. Though the woman seemed pleased by my service initially, she ran off.

I was left without direction in a foreign port. A familiar safe harbor arrived in the form of the Scribe from Ar who had used me several times before. He asked me why I was so happy to see Him.

How best to explain that? I suppose it’s that, after the experience being punished and pilloried, I feel like I am a pariah in my home port of Brundisium. Yes, the Ubar had been exceptionally favorable and positive about my future, and yes, the former Ubara had stepped in on many occasions to assist me, but I can’t stifle the suspicions I have that the slave girls who castigated me were correct in how I’m viewed.

Above all, any true slave will want to be good. More than wisdom, wit, determination, honesty and attractiveness, we want to be good. And when we’re told that we are bad, it is more than a mere criticism. It’s a challenge to our very sense of self and place.

The Scribe has always seen me as good or as worthy of correction. I put that good behavior on full display last night in Genesian Port, acting as a pedestal for Him to put His boot on while he discussed mead production with a northerner Free Woman. After, He took me to a rather rickety Tavern and used me. It was then that I did something that kajira whisper about together and sing themselves to sleep with.

I begged Him to own me. I like to think I did a capable job of it. Every word came naturally. He is all I would want in a Master. He treats me as a slave of worth, and that is all I wish to be. And He comports Himself with dignity and intelligence and invincible drive, as though He were both Master of Himself and of the world He walks. How could a good girl not want to be dragged by her hair behind such a Man?

Understandably, He said He wouldn’t answer me right away. He is a person of incalculable value and I am only a slave that He’s been with a handful of times. Yet I explained to Him that I felt that everything had been taken from me - my dignity, my station, my reputation, even my place - so that I could be His.

I await Him where He left me. It cannot be otherwise. I am His whether He elects to own me or not. I am certain that unless He places me otherwise, I will continue to be what I am this very moment: a nobody nowhere at all.
